Manchester City plunged deeper into trouble in the Champions League by losing 2-0 at Juventus on Wednesday, the latest setback in a scarcely believable run of poor results for the ailing English champions. City dropped to 22nd place in the 36-team standings, with only the top 24 advancing. Progressing to the next round of the new-look format looked a certainty before the season for a team that was European champion in 2023 and has won the last four Premier League titles. But not anymore as City manager Pep Guardiola battles injuries and an apparent loss of belief among his players. City has won just one of its last 10 matches in all competitions, with goals by Dušan Vlahović and Weston McKennie inflicting the latest defeat and igniting Juventus' qualification hopes. City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan described the team's problem as a “mental issue.” Opponents “are able to break our rhythm with the smallest of things,” Gundogan said. "They don’t even need to do much and it has such a big effect on us right now.” Barcelona jumped into second place in the league standings, behind Liverpool, and is guaranteed to advance after a 3-2 win at Borussia Dortmund. Raphinha and Ferran Torres, with two goals, scored for Barca. Arsenal beat Monaco 3-0 mainly thanks to two goals by Bukayo Saka to move into third place and be the highest of six teams on 13 points. The top eight qualify directly for the last 16 and the teams placed No. 9-24 go into a two-legged playoff. Danger for City City has two games to save its faltering Champions League campaign and the first is against Paris Saint-Germain, another giant in trouble in 25th place — one spot out of the qualifying positions. Vlahović put Juventus ahead in the 53rd when he powered a header goalward straight at City goalkeeper Ederson, who could only parry the ball over his own line. Two American substitutes sealed the win for Juve, with McKennie volleying home from Timothy Weah's cross. Juventus moved into 14th place. Super-sub Torres Ferran Torres came off the bench to inspire Barcelona to a fifth win in six games and push Dortmund, last season's runner-up, out of the top eight. Torres came on in the 71st to replace Robert Lewandowski, who had a quiet game against his former club. Just four minutes later, Torres scored a goal on the rebound from Dani Olmo’s shot. Serhou Guirassy’s second goal of the game leveled the score at 2-2 but Torres scored again in the 85th off Lamine Yamal’s pass on the counter. Raphinha gave Barcelona the lead before Guirassy equalized from the penalty spot. Raphinha and Guirassy are tied for second place in the scoring chart on six goals, behind Lewandowski's competition-high seven. Home comforts for Arsenal Arsenal secured a third straight home win without conceding in the league stage, with Saka scoring in the 34th and 78th minutes and sending in a shot that was turned into the net by substitute Kai Havertz in the 88th. Arsenal is ahead of Bayer Leverkusen, Aston Villa, Inter Milan, Brest and Lille on goal difference. Lille won 3-2 at home to Sturm Graz on Wednesday. In-form Alvarez Man City could sure do with Julian Alvarez at the moment. With a brilliant curling finish to open the scoring, the Argentina striker helped Atletico Madrid beat Slovan Bratislava 3-1 and provide a timely reminder of what City is missing after selling him for more than $100 million in August. Alvarez has 12 goals for the season, with four coming in the Champions League. Antoine Griezmann scored Atletico’s other two goals at Metropolitano stadium as the Spanish team climbed to 11th place after a 10th straight win in all competitions. Tribute to grieving teammate When Lukasz Lakomy gave Young Boys the lead against Stuttgart, he ran toward the sideline and held up teammate Meschack Elia’s jersey as others gathered around him. The gesture was a tribute after Elia’s son died unexpectedly this week after a short illness. Elia wasn’t playing as he was on his way to his native Congo, where his son died, to be with his family. Both teams wore black armbands and there was a moment of silence before the game, which was won 5-1 by Stuttgart. Late winner Tammy Abraham scored an 87th-minute winner as AC Milan beat Red Star Belgrade 2-1 to move one point off the top eight. Milan lost Alvaro Morata and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to muscle injuries in the first half. Benfica’s five-match winning streak ended with a 0-0 home draw against Bologna, and Feyenoord had a 4-2 win over Sparta Prague. ___ Steve Douglas is at https://twitter.com/sdouglas80 ___ AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer Steve Douglas, The Associated PressVstorm honored in Deloitte 2024 Technology Fast 50 Central Europe 12-06-2024 07:32 PM CET | Business, Economy, Finances, Banking & Insurance Press release from: Getnews / PR Agency: The Branded Word Recognized for exceptional growth and cutting-edge AI innovations Image: https://www.getnews.info/uploads/d16cc444740254d372b63aef6f36bc88.jpg Vstorm, a leader in AI and Large Language Model (LLM)-based solutions, is proud to announce its recognition in the prestigious Deloitte 2024 Technology Fast 50 Central Europe program. Syria’s former president Bashar al-Assad is in Moscow with his family after Russia granted them asylum on humanitarian grounds, a Kremlin source told Russian news agencies on Sunday, and a deal has been done to ensure the safety of Russian military bases. Russia’s Foreign Ministry said earlier that Assad had left Syria and given orders for a peaceful transfer of power, after rebel fighters raced into Damascus unopposed on Sunday, ending nearly six decades of his family’s iron-fisted rule. “Syrian President Assad of Syria and members of his family have arrived in Moscow. Russia has granted them asylum on humanitarian grounds,” the privately-owned Interfax news agency and state media quoted the unnamed Kremlin source as saying. Must Read Syrian rebels topple President Assad, prime minister calls for free elections Interfax cited the same Kremlin source as saying Russia favoured a political solution to the crisis in Syria, where Moscow supported Assad during the long civil war. The source said negotiations should be resumed under the auspices of the United Nations. Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s ambassador to international organisations in Vienna, said on his Telegram messaging channel: “Breaking news! Bashar al-Assad and his family in Moscow. Russia does not betray friends in difficult situations.” Syrian opposition leaders had agreed to guarantee the safety of Russian military bases and diplomatic institutions in Syria, the source told news agencies. But some Russian war bloggers said the situation around the bases was extremely tense and the source did not say how long the security guarantee lasted. Moscow, a staunch backer of Assad whom it intervened to help in 2015 in its biggest Middle East foray since the Soviet collapse, is scrambling to salvage its position. Its geopolitical clout in the wider region and two strategically-important military bases in Syria are on the line. A deal to secure Russia’s Hmeimim air base in Syria’s Latakia province and its naval facility at Tartous on the coast would come as a relief to Moscow. The Tartous facility is Russia’s only Mediterranean repair and replenishment hub, and Moscow has used Syria as a staging post to fly its military contractors in and out of Africa. Losing Tartous would be a serious blow to Russia’s ability to project power in the Middle East, the Mediterranean and Africa, say Western military analysts. Military presence in doubt Influential Russian war blogger “Rybar,” who is close to the Russian Defence Ministry and has over 1.3 million followers on his Telegram channel, said the situation around the bases was a serious cause for concern whatever Moscow’s official line. “Russia’s military presence in the Middle East region hangs by a thread,” Rybar said. “What anyone decided in high offices is absolutely irrelevant on the ground,” he added, suggesting Russian forces at the bases had not taken the initiative to defend their positions in the absence of orders from Moscow. Russian warships had left Tartous and taken up position off the coast for security reasons, the Hmeimim airbase had effectively been cut off after rebels took control of a nearby town, Kurdish forces had started to block Russian facilities beyond the Euphrates, and Russian positions at an oil facility in Homs had been blocked, Rybar said. Reuters could not independently confirm Rybar’s assertions. Earlier on Sunday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the two military facilities had been put on a state of high alert, but played down any immediate risk. “There is currently no serious threat to their security,” the ministry said as it announced Assad’s departure from office and from Syria. “As a result of negotiations between B. Assad and a number of participants in the armed conflict on the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic, he decided to resign from the presidency and left the country, giving instructions for a peaceful transfer of power,” it added, saying Russia did not participate in those negotiations. The Foreign Ministry said Moscow was alarmed by events in Syria. “We urge all parties involved to refrain from the use of violence and to resolve all issues of governance through political means,” its statement said. “In that regard, the Russian Federation is in contact with all groups of the Syrian opposition.” – Rappler.com Must Read Syrian opposition leader calls for 18 month transition period before elections

Elon Musk's xAI artificial intelligence company on Saturday rolled out a free beta version of its Aurora image generator, capable of producing photo-realistic pictures upon request. The Aurora service is available through the Grok 2 add-on to Musk's X social media platform, which for all users earlier this week. "Congrats for releasing a brand new image gen model -- Aurora!" xAI developer Chris Park Saturday. "Grok 2 + Aurora is now available with your X app in the model selector. Oh, by the way, Grok 3 is coming!" xAI doesn't need to wait until Monday. This team is too cracked and stays shipping. Congrats for releasing a brand new image gen model -Aurora! Grok 2 + Aurora is now available with your X app in the model selector. Oh, by the way, Grok 3 is coming. — Chris Park (@chrisparkX) Under the terms of the free service, users can send up to 10 messages to Grok every two hours and generate up to three images per day, . One AI analyst reacted by noting the roll-out was done over a weekend. "I don't think people realize how much effort goes into these launches," Rowan Cheung, producer of The Rundown AI newsletter. "OpenAI, Google, etc., would rarely -- if ever -- launch something big over the weekend, given the risks and the need to pull in more people if something goes wrong. "Something to pay attention to." Like earlier versions of xAI's ultra-realistic image generator, it appeared unclear on Saturday what if any guardrails exist on what can be drawn, including ultra-realistic depictions of public figures. Some early users reported being able to generate images of well-known celebrities and politicians, such as Musk and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Grok + Aurora achieves a level of photorealism that I have never seen before in Gen AI. Here is and made with . — Pasquale (@raider99k) When first introduced for premium subscribers in August, xAI claimed its image generator to exclude "illegal activities" and "deepfakes or misleading media," yet users were still able to generate highly controversial images such as former President Barack Obama taking illegal drugs or presidential candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris holding guns.
