717 bet NEW YORK (AP) — After acquiring Juan Soto for a one-year rental and failing to keep him as a free agent, the New York Yankees are taking the same chance with Devin Williams. New York acquired the All-Star closer from the Milwaukee Brewers for left-hander Nestor Cortes and infield prospect Caleb Durbin on Friday. The Yankees will send $2 million to the Brewers as part of the trade. “He's a year away from free agency but someone that we’ve tried to acquire for a number of years,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. “I’m sure we weren’t the only bidders here in the end.” A 30-year-old right-hander, Williams is eligible for free agency after the 2025 season. He was diagnosed during spring training with two stress fractures in his back and didn’t make his season debut until July 28 . “Certainly not trying to downplay the impact the Devin had, but we feel like we still have a good amount of strength there with our bullpen,” Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said. Williams was 14 for 15 in save chances with a 1.25 ERA, striking out 38 and walking 11 among 88 batters over 21 2/3 innings. His fastball averaged 94.7 mph and he threw it on 53.5% of his pitches, mixing in 45% changeups — known as the “Airbender” — and around 1.5% cutters. William's 43.2% strikeout percentage was the highest in the major leagues among pitchers with at least 20 innings. “Certainly doesn’t seem to be afraid,” Cashman said. “You can’t do that job if you’re afraid of the big stage.” An All-Star in 2022 and 2023, Williams was a second-round pick in the 2013 amateur draft. He is 27-10 with a 1.83 ERA and 68 saves in 78 chances over six seasons, striking out 375 and walking 112 in 235 2/3 innings over 241 games. Milwaukee declined a $10.5 million club option in favor of a $250,000 buyout last month, making Williams eligible for arbitration. Williams joins a bullpen that includes Luke Weaver, who took over as closer from Clay Holmes in September, Jake Cousins and Ian Hamilton. The Yankees don’t have a left-handed reliever on their 40-man roster. “If you have right handers that can neutralize lefties, that’s a benefit. It limits your desperation for immediately a left on left,” Cashman said. Cortes, who turned 30 on Tuesday, was an All-Star in 2022 when he went 12-4 with a career-best 2.44 ERA in 28 starts. He made just one start after May 30 in 2023 because of a strained left rotator cuff and was sidelined late in the 2024 season by a flexor strain in his left elbow. He returned for the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers and entered in the 10th inning of the opener, retiring Shohei Ohtani on a foulout with his first pitch and giving up a game-ending grand slam to Freddie Freeman on his second. "He’s had a fully healthy offseason," Arnold said. “We expect him to come into camp ready to go as normal.” Known for his many deliveries, Cortes is 33-21 with a 3.80 ERA in 86 starts and 49 relief appearances over seven seasons. He is eligible for arbitration and also can become a free agent after next season. “He brings a real stability, I think, to our rotation,” Arnold said. “Somebody that's been a major piece of a really good championship-caliber team in the New York Yankees, I think will fit us very well, especially after the loss of Willy Adames .” New York had an excess of starters after reaching a $218 million, eight-year agreement with left-hander Max Fried that is pending. Claims spreading online focus on the report's finding that 26 FBI informants were in Washington for election-related protests on Jan. 6, including three who had been tasked with traveling to the city to report on others who were potentially planning to attend the events. Although 17 of those informants either entered the Capitol or a restricted area around the building during the riot, none of the 26 total informants were authorized to do so by the bureau, according to the report. Nor were they authorized to otherwise break the law or encourage others to do so. Here's a closer look at the facts. CLAIM: A December 2024 report released by the Department of Justice's Office of the Inspector General is proof that the Jan. 6 Capitol riot was a setup by the FBI. THE FACTS: That's false. The report found that no undercover FBI employees were at the riot on Jan. 6 and that none of the bureau's informants were authorized to participate. Informants, also known as confidential human sources, work with the FBI to provide information, but are not on the bureau’s payroll. Undercover agents are employed by the FBI. According to the report, 26 informants were in Washington on Jan. 6 in connection with the day's events. FBI field offices only informed the Washington Field Office or FBI headquarters of five informants that were to be in the field on Jan. 6. Of the total 26 informants, four entered the Capitol during the riot and an additional 13 entered a restricted area around the Capitol. But none were authorized to do so by the FBI, nor were they given permission to break other laws or encourage others to do the same. The remaining nine informants did not engage in any illegal activities. None of the 17 informants who entered the Capitol or surrounding restricted area have been prosecuted, the report says. A footnote states that after reviewing a draft of the report, the U.S. attorney's office in Washington said that it “generally has not charged those individuals whose only crime on January 6, 2021 was to enter restricted grounds surrounding the Capitol, which has resulted in the Office declining to charge hundreds of individuals; and we have treated the CHSs consistent with this approach.” The assistant special agent in charge of the Washington Field Office's counterterrorism division told the inspector general's office that he “denied a request from an FBI office to have an undercover employee engage in investigative activity on January 6.” He, along with then-Washington Field Office Assistant Director in Charge Steven D'Antuono, said that FBI policy prohibits undercover employees at First Amendment-protected events without investigative authority. These claims echo a fringe conspiracy theory advanced by some Republicans in Congress that the FBI played a role in instigating the events of Jan. 6, 2021, when rioters determined to overturn Republican Donald Trump's 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden stormed the Capitol in a violent clash with police. The report knocks that theory down. Wray called such theories “ludicrous” at a congressional hearing last year. JAMESTOWN — The University of Jamestown women’s volleyball team could not figure out how to stop William Carey University in a five-set loss (25-15, 25-23, 20-25, 19-25, 8-15) in the first round of the NAIA National Championship on Saturday, Nov. 23, at Harold Newman Arena. The opening points of the first set were incredibly close with the teams trading points. After they faced a 10-7 deficit the Jimmies went on a run to take a 16-12 lead, drawing a Crusaders timeout. Out of the stoppage, the Jimmies kept it up on their way to a 25-15 first-set win. During the first set, the largest lead for either team was the final ten-point Jimmies lead. ADVERTISEMENT The second set appeared to be another one where the Jimmies and Crusaders battled early before the hosts found a way to fight back. After the teams were tied at eight, the Jimmies were able to go on a run to take a 19-13. They were doing their best to sail from there to a second set win taking a 24-18 lead. However, the visitors would not go down quietly trimming the deficit to 24-23 but a kill from Lexi Olson ended the set and gave the Jimmies the 25-23 set win. It’s something which is proving popular, yet naturally controversial. Singles have been using it for everything from crafting clever bios to analysing message exchanges – turning technology into a modern-day Cupid, albeit a digital one. For Sydney local Caitlin Morris, who has been single for a year, AI has become an unexpected ally in the often draining experience of dating apps. “I’ve used it in a few ways — from crafting an engaging profile that appeals to the type of person I want to attract, to asking ChatGPT to give feedback on my photos and whether they show me in the way I want to be seen online,” she said. Picture: Supplied Ms Morris’ decision to turn to AI wasn’t random, as she already used it at work. “I use it all the time for tasks like customer service and improving communication, so it seemed natural to use it for something similar in my dating life,” she explained. “Creating a dating profile can feel hard since you want to come across as funny, engaging, and attractive, without being too serious or too vague.” By giving ChatGPT prompts like, “Write a funny and punchy dating app bio about me to attract men, including that I work in sales, love the gym, am a foodie, love the ocean and travelling, enjoy a good glass of wine, and love my cat,” Ms Morris manages to save time and sidestep the self-critiquing spiral that often comes with designing a profile. But even with its help, she still makes sure to finetune the responses if it emphasises one aspect too much. “One first draft overly focused on my love of wine!” she laughed. When it comes to helping her in conversations, Ms Morris said she’s used it “once or twice.” “I used it to help break up with a guy and, when another guy was being really boring, I asked if AI could help me joke around without being insulting. But for the most part, it’s the real me talking.” Yet for all the help AI provides, Ms Morris has still been left disappointed by the apps. “Unless ChatGPT can make the guys’ responses more engaging, the experience is pretty similar after I hit ‘save’,” she admitted. Apps like RIZZ, dubbed an “AI wingman,” have skyrocketed in popularity, with 7.5 million users globally, including 400,000 Aussies. Co-founders Roman Khaves and Josh Miller created the app after recognising the common problem of people sharing screenshots of awkward chats with friends, desperate for advice. RIZZ, which is now the fifth most downloaded dating app in the United States, promises to do everything Ms Morris described, but with a fun and gamified interface. It can generate everything from playful openers to NSFW, sexting-esque messages. Similar platforms, like PlugAI and WingGPT, also promise to help daters “up their game” by drafting responses. However, the growing trend of people using AI in the dating world has not been without criticism. Apps like PlugAI use the power of AI to help people in dating app conversations. One Sydney dater told news.com.au, “It’s kind of scary that people could be using ChatGPT for their profiles and responses. Picture: Supplied Relationship expert weighs in on AI in dating Relationship and intimacy coach Susie Kim recognises the challenges many face on dating apps, from lacklustre conversations to people “ghosting” their matches. “A lot of clients come to me feeling sick of the dating app experience as a whole - boring, repetitive conversations, not getting replies, and feeling like they’re not meeting the right people,” she said. “Essentially, they feel like there is a whole lot of effort that is not translating to positive dating experiences in real life. Having said that, what I see is that a lot of people don’t have a practical dating strategy in place that makes the apps experience a more easeful, enjoyable one.” For some of her male clients, AI offers a helping hand. “They know women get flooded with likes and messages, so they want to improve their chat game,” Ms Kim, who is a relationship coach for high achievers, explained. “Personally, I think that anything that makes the dating experience easier is worth it, because one of the biggest problems I see is that people are on and off with dating itself. If you can find ways to make dating more sustainable, fun or easy for you, do it!” Ms Kim suggests her clients use it as a “source of inspiration” on fun ways to respond or ask interesting questions. “It’s never about being disingenuous, it’s about being yourself, amplified,” she explained. Brandon Lee Ortega, 26, of Mexia, Texas, died on Nov. 12 after he hopped a railing and fell down an embankment near John F. Kennedy Boulevard East in Guttenberg during a brief foot chase with police, authorities said. A preliminary investigation into the incident found that Guttenberg police responded to 68th Street and Bellevue Avenue at 11:02 p.m. on Nov. 12 for a report of a disturbance, officials said. Officers were given descriptions of the people involved in the disturbance and that one of the people involved, later identified by police as Ortega, was armed with a gun, officials said. Guttenberg police officer Brandon Sauerwald identified Ortega in the area of 7000 John F. Kennedy Boulevard East, and after a foot chase, Ortega hopped a railing next to a building and fell down an embankment, authorities said. Emergency Medical Services and the fire department responded, but Ortega was pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials. A gun was recovered from Ortega, authorities said in a press release. The investigation is ongoing and officials did not release further details Friday. The Attorney General’s Office investigates all deaths that occur during an encounter with law enforcement officers acting in their official capacity under a 2019 law. The law requires investigations be presented to a grand jury to determine if an indictment is warranted. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans have the slimmest of playoff hopes and must win out to have any chance of keeping them alive. Figuring out who they are would be a first step in the right direction. The Titans (3-9) also must bounce back from last week's ugly loss at Washington that cost this franchise yet another chance to string together consecutive wins for the first time in more than two years. “We know that this is a big opportunity for us to develop as a team and to create and to continue developing our identity,” quarterback Will Levis said. “And so we’re going to make sure that we do our best throughout these next few weeks to do that.” The Jacksonville Jaguars (2-10) lost Trevor Lawrence for the rest of the season after the hit he took from Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair in last week's 23-20 loss to Houston. Their already dim playoff hopes were extinguished Monday night when Denver won. That leaves the Jaguars playing for pride and potentially drafting No. 1 overall for the third time in five years. “It’s all about how you finish,” tight end Evan Engram said. “How we finish probably won’t erase the feeling we have of the season.
