Enzo Maresca says he has never seen Cole Palmer practice penalties, admitting the Chelsea playmaker is “not normal” after he set a new Premier League spot-kick record. Palmer scored twice from the spot during Sunday’s dramatic 4-3 victory over Chelsea, the second a wonderful ‘Panenka’ that all-but secured the three points. The Englishman has now scored 12 consecutive penalties in the league, breaking the record for the longest successful streak that was previously held by Manchester City legend Yaya Toure. Palmer claimed in an interview soon after signing for Chelsea that he does not practice penalties in training and Maresca confirmed that that remains the case now. “Since we started I haven’t seen Cole shooting penalties,” Maresca said. “In terms of the second penalty? It’s Cole and you have to expect anything. “Yeah, absolutely [it is remarkable]. Cole belongs to that kind of players that are not normal players. They are top players. Top players do things that normal players, or us, say: ‘How can he do that?’ “It’s because he’s Cole, it’s because he’s top. We expect this from Cole.” Chelsea were 2-0 down inside 11 minutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski both scored as a result of Marc Cucurella slips. The Spanish defender changed his boots immediately after the second of those goals and later showed on social media that the initial pair had been thrown straight in the bin. However, Maresca’s side fought back in fine style, with Jadon Sancho reducing the deficit, before Palmer’s penalties came either side of an Enzo Fernandez strike. “Marc Cucurella said he was trying to give a bit of emotion to the game,” Maresca said. “Probably it was too much. “Since we stared, we’re trying to work on the way we want to play on and off the ball, but also in terms of mentally and togetherness. To come to this stadium and think you’re going to win or compete without suffering or without some bad moments is impossible. We were ready for that. “Probably it’s too much after 15 minutes, to give away two goals. But it’s the perfect win, probably, because of this.”Former MP Collins Owusu Amankwaa Urges Ghanaians to Protect Free SHS Ahead of Elections
The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) made a significant arrest on Friday, November 29, apprehending a labourer named Dipesh Gohel for allegedly selling sensitive information about the movement of Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ships to a Pakistani agent. Gohel, a welder-cum-labourer who has been employed at Okha jetty in the coastal Devbhumi Dwarka district for the past three years, reportedly interacted with a woman using the profile name “Sahima” on Facebook about seven months ago. Superintendent of police (ATS) K Siddharth stated that the woman claimed to be an operative of the Pakistan Navy and paid Gohel Rs 200 daily in exchange for details regarding the names and movements of ICG vessels arriving at the jetty. The ATS had been monitoring Gohel after receiving a tip-off about his contact with a suspected agent of the Pakistani intelligence agency, ISI. Technical surveillance confirmed that messages from Pakistan were being forwarded to Gohel, prompting further investigation. Over the course of seven months, Gohel is alleged to have facilitated the transfer of Rs 42,000 through UPI transactions to the bank accounts of three friends, from whom he would then collect cash. Gohel has been charged under Sections 61 and 147 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertain to criminal conspiracy and waging war against the government. ATS officials stated that the information shared by Gohel posed significant risks to national security, given its strategic military importance due to India’s geographical proximity to Pakistan. This arrest follows another incident last month in which an individual was detained in Porbandar for similar spying activities. The ATS continues to work closely with the Coast Guard to enhance surveillance and address potential threats in India’s maritime zone.YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) — On a damp Wednesday night with temperatures dipping into the 30s, fans in sparsely filled stands bundled up to watch Buffalo beat Eastern Michigan 37-30 on gray turf. The lopsided game was not particularly notable, but it was played on one of the nights the Mid-American Conference has made its own: A weeknight. “A lot of the general public thinks we play all of our games on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, not just some of them in November,” MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said in a telephone interview this week. “What it has done is help take what was a pretty darned good regional conference and has given it a national brand and made it a national conference.” When the conference has played football games on ESPN or ESPN2 over the last two seasons, the linear television audience has been 10 times larger than when conference schools meet on Saturdays and get lost in the shuffle when viewers have many more choices. The most-watched MAC game over the last two years was earlier this month on a Wednesday night when Northern Illinois won at Western Michigan and there were 441,600 viewers, a total that doesn’t include streaming that isn’t captured by Nielsen company. During the same span, the linear TV audience has been no larger than 46,100 to watch two MAC teams play on Saturdays. “Having the whole nation watching on Tuesday and Wednesday night is a huge deal for the MAC,” Eastern Michigan tight end Jere Getzinger said. “Everybody wants to watch football so if you put it on TV on a Tuesday or Wednesday, people are going to watch.” ESPN has carried midweek MAC football games since the start of the century. ESPN and the conference signed a 13-year extension a decade ago that extends their relationship through at least the 2026-27 season. The conference has made the most of the opportunities, using MACtion as a tag on social media for more than a decade and it has become a catchy marketing term for the Group of Five football programs that usually operate under the radar in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and New York. Attendance does tend to go down with weeknight games, keeping some students out of stadiums because they have class or homework and leading to adults staying away home because they have to work the next morning. “The tradeoff is the national exposure,” Buffalo coach Pete Lembo said. “You know November nights midweek the average fan is going to park on the couch, have a bowl of chips and salsa out in front, and watch the game from there." When the Bulls beat Ball State 51-48 in an overtime thriller on a Tuesday night earlier this month, the announced attendance was 12,708 and that appeared to be generous. There were many empty seats after halftime. “You watch the games on TV, the stadiums all look like this,” Buffalo fan Jeff Wojcicki said. “They are not packed, but it’s the only game on, and you know where to find it.” Sleep and practice schedules take a hit as well, creating another wave of challenges for students to attend class and coaches to prepare without the usual rhythm of preparing all week to play on Saturday. “Last week when we played at Ohio in Athens, we had a 4-four bus ride home and got home at about 3:30 a.m.,” Eastern Michigan center Broderick Roman said. “We still had to go to class and that was tough, but it's part of what you commit to as an athlete.” That happens a lot in November when the MAC shifts its unique schedule. During the first two weeks of the month, the conference had 10 games on Tuesdays and Wednesdays exclusively. This week, there were five games on Tuesday and Wednesday while only one was left in the traditional Saturday slot with Ball State hosting Bowling Green. Next week, Toledo plays at Akron and Kent State visits Buffalo on Tuesday night before the MAC schedule wraps up with games next Friday and Saturday to determine which teams will meet in the conference title game on Dec. 7 in Detroit. In all, MAC teams will end up playing about 75% of their games on a Saturday and the rest on November weeknights. When the Eagles wrapped up practice earlier this week, two days before they played the Bulls, tight end Jere Getzinger provided some insight into the effects of the scheduling quirk. “It's Monday, but for us it's like a Thursday,” he said. Bowling Green coach Scot Loeffler said he frankly has a hard time remembering what day it is when the schedule shift hits in November. “The entire week gets turned upside down,” Loeffler said. “It’s wild, but it’s great for the league because there’s two days a week this time of year that people around the country will watch MAC games.” AP freelance writer Jonah Bronstein contributed to this report. AP Business SummaryBrief at 5:06 p.m. ESTLONDON (AFP) – The British government said yesterday that it has agreed to a partnership with Qatar that will see the Gulf state invest GBP1 billion (USD1.3 billion) in climate technologies. “The partnership is expected to create thousands of highly skilled jobs over its lifetime and will see the launch of world-leading climate technology hubs across the United Kingdom (UK) and Qatar to accelerate development in climate-friendly technologies,” according to a statement issued during a state visit by Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani. British industrial group Rolls-Royce, which manufactures aircraft engines, will receive investments for programmes dedicated to energy efficiency, the statement said. Qatar’s investments in the British economy are estimated at more than GBP40 billion and the emirate indicated in 2022 that it intends to invest another GBP10 billion by 2027. The press release also said the two countries will create a joint academy of genomic medicine, which uses information from genome sequencing, and a joint commission on research into artificial intelligence (AI). Qatar’s emir was welcomed on Tuesday by King Charles III at the start of a state visit where he will also hold talks with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who wants to negotiate trade deals with Gulf monarchies. Britain has been seeking new trade pacts since leaving the European Union and in late 2021 began talks with the Gulf Cooperation Council (CCG), which groups Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman. Britain has joined the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), signed trade pacts with Australia and New Zealand, and is in negotiations with India.
MILAN : AC Milan manager Paulo Fonseca was pleased with his side's serious approach in their 6-1 last-16 Coppa Italia win over Sassuolo at the San Siro on Tuesday. Milan raced into a four-goal lead by halftime to end any hopes of an upset by the Serie B leaders, and allowed the manager to send on four substitutes at the start of the second half. "We played a great game, magnificent first half, which also helped us manage the players," Fonseca told Italian broadcaster Mediaset. "Nothing to say, we played a very serious game. The attitude of the players was very serious and I am satisfied." Fonseca made eight changes from the team which beat Empoli 3-0 at the weekend, and the manager was happy with how the players who came in responded. "I have always said to have faith in all the players, that's why they all play," Fonseca said. "Today I'm very pleased because we had players who had played less and who played a magnificent game. They told me that they are ready to play all the time. That's what I want to hear." Fonseca was also pleased with his players' performance in a game they were expected to win. "In the past, I think it was a problem. The attitude towards the big teams has always been perfect," Fonseca said. "But the attitude towards the other teams has always been lacking. That's what we've had today." Fonseca could face his former team AS Roma in the quarter-finals, if they get past Sampdoria, but for now the Milan manager is focussed on their next league game on Friday. "I didn't think about that," Fonseca said. "Now I'm going home and I'm thinking about the game against Atalanta."MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola denied he has a “personal problem” with Kevin De Bruyne and insisted Tuesday the playmaker's absence from the team in recent weeks was down to his fitness issues. City has not won in seven games in all competitions — its worst run under Guardiola — and De Bruyne has featured only as a substitute in the last five of those matches after recovering from a pelvic injury. The Belgium midfielder was injured during City’s Champions League match with Inter Milan on Sept. 18 and hasn't started since. A number of prominent pundits, including former City defender and club ambassador Micah Richards, have questioned why De Bruyne has not been starting games amid the champions’ dramatic slump. Richards said on “The Rest is Football” podcast that it appeared “there’s some sort of rift going on” between De Bruyne and Guardiola. Guardiola responded in his news conference ahead of Wednesday's Premier League match against Nottingham Forest, saying: “People say I’ve got a problem with Kevin. Do you think I like to not play with Kevin? No, I don’t want Kevin to play? “The guy who has the most talent in the final third — I don’t want it? I have a personal problem with him after nine years together? He’s delivered to me the biggest success to this club, but he’s been five months injured (last season) and two months injured (this year). He’s 33 years old. He needs time to find his best, like last season, step by step. He’ll try to do it and feel better. I’m desperate to have his best.” Both De Bruyne and Guardiola have spoken since of the pain De Bruyne was in after his injury against Inter and the need to ease him back into action. De Bruyne is in the final year of his contract. “I’d love to have the Kevin in his prime, 26 or 27. He would love it too — but he is not 26 or 27 anymore," Guardiola said. “He had injuries in the past, important and long ones. He is a guy who needs to be physically fit for his space and energy. You think I’m complaining? It’s normal, it’s nature. He’s played in 10 or 11 seasons a lot of games and I know he is desperate to help us. He gives glimpses of brilliance that only he can have." ___ AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer The Associated Press
