A specialized police unit tasked with getting illegal mopeds, ghost cars and unlicensed street vendors off Big Apple streets is shrouded in secrecy, a new report found. The Patrol Services Bureau Community Response Team (CRT) — formed by top NYPD brass in 2022 to tackle quality-of-life complaints — has no mission statement and is not even mentioned on the department’s website, according to the city’s Department of Investigation report. The unit led by Chief of Patrol John Chell and Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry swelled from 16 initial members to 165 and operates mysteriously citywide, the investigation found. “The lack of transparency regarding NYPD’s Community Response Team risks non-compliance with the law, ethical breaches, and negative policing outcomes,” DOI Inspector General Jeanene Barrett said Tuesday. “Since its inception more than two years ago, CRT has expanded significantly, with a team in every Patrol Borough, without a corresponding expansion of publicly available information about the work of this unit. “The recommendations in this Report encourage the creation of public policies and procedures that will enhance knowledge of and confidence in CRT’s mission, as well as facilitate future oversight,” she added. Despite the stunning lack of transparency around the unit, the CRT is frequently hailed on social media by Daughtry. “Day 35: Manhattan residents have spoken loud and clear — unlawful vendors cluttering our streets? Not on our watch!” he wrote Monday, while showing scores of knock-off designer wallets seized by the unit. “This quality of life issue on 6th Avenue is a regular topic at town hall meetings. "The court is concerned only with whether the decision or the conduct (of the medical board) was free from an error," Justice Bradley stated. One of the complaints was that Dr Bay had posted a social media video claiming Covid-19 vaccines had killed his patient and harmed others. Another complaint stated Dr Bay had attended an anti-vaccination protest outside the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) office in Brisbane in July 2022. A health professional filed a mandatory complaint that Dr Bay had interrupted an Australian Medical Association conference while live streaming video to the internet, yelling "stop forcing these vaccines on the people of Australia who are getting killed by them". The medical board found Dr Bay's public statements undermined medical regulators' "position on Covid-19 and the Covid-19 vaccination". It said his statements also "further contravenes the position of local, state and federal government and health authorities, which are in place to protect public health and safety". Justice Bradley said the Covid-19 pandemic was an "extraordinary period of history" in which governments encouraged widespread vaccine use. However, he said that did not allow the medical board to deny Dr Bay information about the complaints or disregard potential bias at hearings. "None of these measures extended the board's regulatory role to include protection of government and regulatory agencies from political criticism," Justice Bradley said. He ordered the medical board and AHPRA to cover Dr Bay's reasonable legal costs as the regulators had extended the proceedings and made partial admissions at a late stage.

The condemnation came as the House of Lords debated regulations paving the way for a scheme which would require animal lovers on the British mainland to have documentation in order to visit Northern Ireland. Critics view the move as further evidence of Northern Ireland still having to follow EU rules post-Brexit and being treated differently from the rest of the UK – a major source of contention to the unionist community. The paperwork, which will be free to apply for, includes a declaration that the owner will not travel onwards to Ireland or another EU country with their pet or assistance dog. Animals will have to be microchipped and have their own individual pet travel document, which will be valid for its lifetime. Northern Ireland residents returning after a stay in Great Britain with their pet or assistance dog will not need a travel document. The scheme is being introduced under the Windsor Framework, a revised deal for Northern Ireland’s post-Brexit trading arrangements aimed at tackling issues caused by the protocol. Raising her concerns in Parliament, Baroness Hoey, a Northern Irish Brexit supporter and former Labour MP, said: “These regulations are in effect about a new aspect of the Irish Sea border that has not had expression until this point because of the grace periods.” She added: “The experience of visiting Northern Ireland with your pet dog or cat, or even a ferret, will be made to feel like a visit to a foreign country. Lady Hoey went on: “This could spell the end of holiday trips for pet owners from GB to NI and then on to the Republic, when they want to explore both Northern Ireland and the Republic. “If they have a pet passport, they will have renounced their right to go to the Republic. The S&P 500 ended essentially flat, down less than 0.1%, after wavering between tiny gains and losses most of the day. The benchmark index posted a loss for the week, its first after three straight weekly gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.2%, while the Nasdaq composite rose 0.1%, ending just below the record high it set on Wednesday. There were more than twice as many decliners than gainers on the New York Stock Exchange. Gains in technology stocks helped temper losses in communication services, financials and other sectors of the market. Broadcom surged 24.4% for the biggest gain in the S&P 500 after the semiconductor company beat Wall Street’s profit targets and gave a glowing forecast, highlighting its artificial intelligence products. The company also raised its dividend. The company's big gain helped cushion the market's broader fall. Pricey stock values for technology companies like Broadcom give the sector more weight in pushing the market higher or lower. Famellos is no Alexis Tsipras in terms of talent, but he is a good man to hold down the fort – at least until Angela Merkel’s choice gets back in the game, as he has often insinuated he plans to do. Famellos can reorganize the party and find common ground with the renegades who split from SYRIZA and formed the New Left. Cooperation between the two may give them enough votes to keep the leftists in Parliament, but any ambitions they may have for the top spot should be forgotten. It is more than obvious that the reasons why SYRIZA was able to shoot up from single digits to govern the country – the austerity measures and Greece’s near-bankruptcy – are well behind us. The tsunami of anger from 2012 onward that Tsipras rode right into the prime minister’s seat has died away. Greece has returned to normalcy and economic stability. That said, anti-systemic sentiment and a penchant for conspiracy theories remain strong. That’s what the small parties on SYRIZA’s fringes – Course for Freedom, MeRA25 and Movement for Democracy – are banking on. As are a smorgasbord of small parties and formations on the far-right – like Greek Solution, Voice of Reason, Niki, Spartiates etc – who dream of glory and grandeur now that Donald Trump won the elections in the United States. In essence, though, the Greek political stage seems to be reverting back to a strong bipartisan split. Not to the days when the two biggest parties accounted for 80% of the popular vote, but to the days of a dominant centrist party, Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ New Democracy, and a main opposition trying to win back the votes it lost, Nikos Androulakis’ PASOK. After many years of painful sacrifices and major upheaval, Greece is finally sailing in calm waters again. It is surrounded by storms, but it has accomplished much that cannot be taken for granted. It is, therefore, time for the country’s two most important parties – which are largely responsible for Greece’s remarkable progress in the post-World War II era – to find the path to consensus and by doing so to safeguard the present and ensure the country’s future stability.
