A judge in an Ottawa courtroom Friday said the Crown proved beyond a reasonable doubt that King was guilty on one count each of mischief, counselling others to commit mischief and counselling others to obstruct police. He was also found guilty of two counts of disobeying a court order. The Alberta resident was found not guilty on three counts of intimidation and one count of obstructing police himself. King could be facing up to 10 years in prison. The sentencing hearing is scheduled to begin on Jan. 16. The Crown is seeking "significant" incarceration time in a penitentiary while the defence wants King to be sentenced to time served and a period of probation. King's attorney Natasha Calvinho said right now she is focused on the sentencing hearing and will determine if any other action, such as an appeal, will be pursued at a later date. Calvinho said she and her client are disappointed with the ruling, but she said it was well reasoned. "I think what the more important takeaway here, and what we've been saying from the very beginning, Mr. King was acquitted of all charges related to inciting any form of violence, specifically intimidation of Ottawa residents," Calvinho said outside the courthouse. "So yes, he was convicted, a couple counts of mischief for his social media posts, as the judge found, and will continue to fight another day." The maximum sentence for mischief in this instance is 10 years. In January 2022 the convoy attracted thousands of demonstrators to Parliament Hill in protest against public-health restrictions, COVID-19 vaccine mandates and the federal government. The event gridlocked downtown streets around Parliament Hill, with area residents complaining about the fumes from diesel engines running non-stop, and unrelenting noise from constant honking of horns and music parties. The federal Liberal government ultimately invoked the Emergencies Act to try and bring an end to the protests, which had expanded to also block several border crossings into the United States. Ottawa Police brought in hundreds of officers from police forces across Canada to force the protest to an end. King's defence argued that King was peacefully protesting during the three-week demonstration and was not a leader of it. But the Crown alleged he was a protest leader who was instrumental to the disruption the protest caused the city and people who lived and worked nearby. The Crown alleged King co-ordinated the honking, ordering protesters to lay on the horn every 30 minutes for 10 minutes at a time and told people to "hold the line" when he was aware police and the city had asked the protesters to leave. The Crown's case relied mainly on King's own videos, which he posted to social media throughout the protest to document the demonstration and communicate with protesters. The court proceedings paused for about 10 minutes when King requested a short "health break" after the first verdicts on the mischief charges were read. Superior Court Justice Charles Hackland described the honking as "malicious conduct" intended to disrupt residents, workers, businesses and others from lawfully enjoying downtown Ottawa. Hackland also said that the videos show King was seen as and accepted the leadership role. He pointed to a quote from King, finding it "hilarious" that residents could not sleep for 10 days as "gleefully" aiding and abetting mischief. This evidence also played a role in determining King's guilt in disobeying a court order and counselling others to do the same. These charges relate to the original Feb. 7, 2022 injunction against using air and train horns in downtown Ottawa which was launched by residents. The city successfully filed a similar injunction days later. As for counselling others to obstruct police, Hackland found King's call to "hold the line" was telling people not to move from the protest site despite police orders. The judge said that phrase can be seen as a greeting between supporters of the convoy protest, but said there was no other logical interpretation in the context of King's videos. In the days before a multi-day police removal operation began, King called on people to link arms and sit down with their backs to police if officers tried to move them. On the intimidation charges, Hackland said that a consistent theme of King's videos were calls to remain peaceful and non-violent. He said that the target was always the federal government and COVID-19 policies, and specific individuals were not targeted by or through King's actions. As for an intimidation charge related to blocking highways, Hackland said that finding guilt in this instance would be an "overly broad" interpretation of the Criminal Code as the blockade was done as part of a political protest, which is protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. His trial was heard over several weeks between May and July. King still has charges of perjury and obstruction of justice that need to be dealt with which is a separate matter stemming from an April 2022 bail review hearing. It may take its broad structure from one third of a decades-old game, but Rebirth has plenty original to say. Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth PS5 I was expecting a middle chapter for Square’s epic three-part remake of a 1997 classic, but this turned out to be so much more. From the layered character customisation and combat systems that feed seamlessly into one another, to the completely optional collectible card game that I quickly became obsessed with, this is unexpectedly a much broader, deeper and more open game than its predecessor. An astonishing RPG that more than stands on its own merits, and even overshadows part one for ambition and creativity, it’s a remarkable achievement. Star Wars Outlaws PC, PS5, Xbox A streamlined and multi-planet take on Ubisoft’s familiar open-world action, paired with an original-trilogy-era Star Wars tale that follows an up-and-coming scoundrel rather than a Jedi or Imperial, Outlaws has everything a long-suffering franchise fan could hope for in a sandbox scum and villainy game. The overarching story is a bit of a letdown, but the main appeal here is simply being able to exist in this rich and incredibly well-realised universe, being a dirtbag and pulling off heists. Fans of Monty Python or The Mighty Boosh will find a lot to love exploring Barnsworth. Thank Goodness You’re Here PC, PS5, Switch, Xbox A cartoony and hilariously vulgar adventure set in a small northern England town, this is a point-and-punch exploration game that’s fondly reminiscent of classic daft British sketch comedy, with heaps of funny visuals and sound effects plus the voice talents of Matt Berry and others. Mechanically it couldn’t be simpler, but the writing and timing are masterful. From an unexpected exposed penis in a seagull-gathering side-mission to a prolonged sequence combining fish and cigarettes, it’s crassly artful and unforgettable. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Switch Despite her name being in the titles, Princess Zelda has had few starring roles in Nintendo’s beloved adventure epics. This game marks a change in that regard, and introduces a brilliant new approach to items and combat where Zelda can copy and paste objects and enemies to fight and solve puzzles, but it’s otherwise business as usual for the series; this is a beautiful, joyful and surprising fantasy world to explore, with just the right mix of nostalgia and innovation. Eventually you’ll be filling out pages of details before you can even grasp the nature of the crime you’re supposed to be solving. And you’ll be loving it. The Rise of the Golden Idol Netflix, PC, PS5, Switch, Xbox The first Golden Idol was a wonderfully epic tale of paranormal serial murder, and Rise is even better. Set 200 years later, you’re tasked with solving 20 crimes, each painted as a beautifully grotesque painted moment. You analyse the scene to collect clues, words and names, then use those to fill in the blanks and uncover the truth. It’s like a multidimensional murder sudoku, which only gets more complex and tells a compelling alternate history detective story. Dragon Age: The Veilguard PC, PS5, Xbox Bioware is responsible for some of the greatest role-playing games ever, but this is their best in more than a decade. The narrative and fantasy settings are incredible, and the action-focused combat feels great, but the true strength is in the constant choice-making that affects your friendships in real and unexpected ways. Early on, the game makes you choose between two companions, the consequence of which leaves one with permanent visible bruises and scars for the rest of the game. This is Dragon Age telling you how it’s going to be. Unicorn Overlord has the familiar Vanillaware look, but it may be the studio’s deepest game yet. Unicorn Overlord PS5, Switch, Xbox Vanillaware has spent two decades crafting interesting and complex games with astounding hand-drawn art. The studio has a cult following but I think Unicorn Overlord might be its first true breakout hit. It’s a twist on the traditional turn-based tactical RPG, where instead of just skirmishing you define the parameters of each unit’s actions and priorities ahead of time, and then watch as they play out in battle. And, of course, it’s gorgeous. Sonic x Shadow Generations PC, PS5, Switch, Xbox Since 2011’s excellent Sonic Generations was already a reimagining of the series’ high points, half of this new package is arguably remaking remakes. But the other half — an all-new campaign featuring Shadow the Hedgehog — contains some of the most excellent 3D Sonic gameplay ever made. It serves as a great introduction to the character alongside his big-screen debut, but it also presents his tortured backstory and most memorable game moments in a surprisingly cohesive and enjoyable manner. No combat, no explanations, just a blob in a cursed VHS tape of ghostly animals. Animal Well PC, PS5, PS Plus, Switch, Xbox Animal Well , another amazing work from a solo developer, is on the surface a stunning CRT-filtered Metroid-like with a spooky animal theme. But dig a little deeper past the cursed herons and sleepy capybara and you’ll find a complex latticework of puzzles combined with interesting power-ups, a focus on physics play and a near total lack of combat. Some secrets require specific power-ups from around the world (a yo-yo, a slinky, a frisbee), while others need lateral thinking or knowledge gleaned from other areas. UFO 50 PC A package of 50 new games, styled and presented as a library of retro titles by a fictional company for their fictional home computer, this compilation evokes the feeling of finding a dusty 1980s machine and a box full of disks, and putting them in to see what you find. The games are all surprisingly full in scope, and they run the genre gamut from beat-em-ups to top-down driving games to narrative horror. Best of all are the two-player options, which offer a peerlessly strange retro bonding experience. The Great Circle takes Indy to many cultural epicentres around the globe, from Italy to Egypt to the Himalayas and more. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Game Pass, PC, Xbox Games based on movie franchises can go very wrong, but MachineGames (the Swedish studio known for the Nazi-hunting 2010s Wolfenstein series), had a clear vision for the world’s most famous archeologist . Each level is an exploratory puzzle with dozens of smaller riddles within, filled with fascists to sneak around and artefacts to recover. Combat is slapstick, gunplay is scarce, the iconic whip gets plenty of creative use and voice actor Troy Baker puts in an astonishing Harrison Ford impersonation. The narrative overall (concerning a trek across the globe to stop the Nazis achieving a mystical power) is the best the franchise has seen since 1989. Pat King found guilty of mischief for role in 'Freedom Convoy'Alex Regula, a prospect that was in the Chicago Blackhawks organization two seasons ago, was placed on waivers by the Boston Bruins and picked up by the Edmonton Oilers. Chicago traded Regula to the Bruins as part of the deal to acquire Taylor Hall in the 2023 off-season. The Bruins signed Regula for a second time this past off-season to a one-year, $775,000 deal (league minimum). He was injured prior to the season starting and has been on the injured reserve this entire season. Upon getting healthy, he was placed on waivers for the second consecutive season. The Bruins also cut him from their roster in 2023 in training camp. Edmonton claims Alec Regula on waivers — Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) Regula played all 22 of his career games in the NHL in Chicago and didn't play any last season for Boston. He spent the entirety of the 2023-24 season playing in the AHL where the defenseman put up four goals and 26 points in 55 games. He produced five goals and 21 points in 51 games in 2022-23 for the Rockford IceHogs. The former Blackhawks' prospect has one career goal that came in the 2021-22 season. Regula's time in Chicago was clearly at an end since there was just no room for growth for him in the organization with who was on the way. The Blackhawks arguably have the best and/or most young defensemen/defensive prospects in the league right now. Regula isn't a bad defenseman and he could prove some people wrong at the NHL level. There is some upside there that was reached in Junior. He is a solid depth piece that has a little NHL experience at least, and that's what it seems like the Oilers are hoping for with his pickup. China’s Defence Ministry criticised a recent US Pentagon report on its military, calling it a distortion of China’s defence policies and interference in internal affairs. The annual report, released Wednesday, highlighted issues of corruption within the Chinese military, noting that at least 15 senior officers and defence executives were ousted between July and December 2023, potentially disrupting Beijing’s 2027 modernisation goals. Despite advancements in military capabilities, the report stated that corruption continues to pose significant challenges to China’s armed forces development. Here are the key takeaways about the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) from the report: China’s navy – the largest in the world – has more than 370 ships and submarines, up from the approximately 340 that the Pentagon said China had in its 2022 report. The navy has also continued to “grow its ability” to perform missions beyond the first island chain – which includes Japan’s Okinawa, Taiwan and the Philippines – it added. China’s stockpile of operational nuclear warheads has also increased from more than 500 last year to more than 600 in 2024, the report said. It will have more than 1,000 by 2030, the Pentagon said, as Beijing pushes “to modernize, diversify, and expand its nuclear forces rapidly”. This, it said, would enable China to “target more US cities, military facilities, and leadership sites than ever before in a potential nuclear conflict”. The PLA’s air force is “rapidly approaching technology” up to US standards, the report said. It is “modernising and indigenising” its aircraft, as well as unmanned aerial systems. China is also developing new intercontinental ballistic missiles that will “significantly improve” its nuclear-capable missile forces and require increased nuclear warhead production, the report said. The country also “probably completed” the construction of three new silo fields in 2022, which would contain at least 300 new ICBM silos where it has loaded some of the missiles. Beijing may also be exploring the development of conventionally armed intercontinental-range missile systems that could threaten the United States, it added. China is looking to expand its overseas infrastructure and logistics to “project and sustain military power at greater distances” beyond its base in Djibouti, the Pentagon said. The PLA has likely considered having military logistics facilities in countries from Myanmar, Pakistan and Bangladesh to Kenya and Nigeria, among others. A global Chinese military logistics network could “disrupt” US operations, the report added. China “amplified” its diplomatic, political and military pressure against Taiwan in 2023, the report said. The country “continued to erode longstanding norms in and around Taiwan by employing a range of pressure tactics”, it added. This includes maintaining a naval presence around the self-ruled island, which Beijing claims as its own territory; increasing crossings into Taiwan’s self-declared centerline and air defence identification zone; and conducting highly publicised major military exercises nearby.
