While the Italian top-flight was known for its tactical discipline and defensive prowess, it often overshadowed the attacking exploits of players like Batistuta. In contrast, players in leagues like the Premier League or La Liga, where the attacking flair was more prominent, may have garnered more attention from voters and fans alike.

LONDON (AP) — An artist whose work exploring her Scottish Sikh identity includes a vintage Ford car draped in a crocheted doily won the U.K.’s prestigious Turner Prize on Tuesday. Jasleen Kaur was awarded the 25,000-pound ($32,000) prize by actor James Norton during a ceremony at the Tate Britain gallery in London, where works by the four finalists are on display until February. A jury led by Tate Britain director Alex Farquhar praised the way 38-year-old Kaur “weaves together the personal, political and spiritual” through “unexpected and playful combinations of material.” Her winning exhibition mixes sculpture, print, everyday items – including family photos, a Ford Escort car and the popular Scottish soda Irn Bru -- and immersive music to reflect on her upbringing in Glasgow’s Sikh community. Three other finalists – Pio Abad, Claudette Johnson and Delaine Le Bas – received 10,000 pounds ($12,670) each. Named for 19th-century landscape painter J.M.W. Turner and founded in 1984 to reward young artists, the prize helped make stars of shark-pickling artist Damien Hirst, potter Grayson Perry, sculptor Anish Kapoor and filmmaker Steve McQueen . But it has also been criticized for rewarding impenetrable conceptual work and often sparks debate about the value of modern art, with winners such as Hirst’s "Mother and Child Divided,” which consists of two cows, bisected and preserved in formaldehyde, and Martin Creed’s “Lights On and Off” -- a room with a light blinking on and off – drawing scorn from sections of the media. In 2019, all four finalists were declared winners after they refused to compete against one another, “to make a collective statement in the name of commonality, multiplicity and solidarity.” In 2021, all five finalists were collectives rather than individual artists. The award was initially open to artists under 50 but now has no upper age limit.

Tweet Facebook Mail A network of Australian-based neo-nazi TikTok accounts have been publishing white nationalist content and attempting to recruit users, with new accounts appearing hours after previous users were banned. Photos and videos posted by the group praised Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, and advocated for Australia to become "a white ethnostate". When the issue was raised by 9news.com.au accounts were deleted by TikTok, only for replacement accounts to quickly become active. And now, in the wake of recent antisemitic attacks in Sydney and Melbourne, Jewish leaders say TikTok needs to do much more to stop the group's rhetoric from "spilling onto our streets." READ MORE: Every capital city's Christmas petrol prices revealed A network of Australian-based neo-nazi TikTok accounts have been publishing white nationalist content and attempting to recruit users, with new accounts appearing hours after previous users were banned. (Composite image) (Nine) The accounts are part of the Australian neo-nazi group the "National Socialist Network." They appeared to be operating out of multiple states and were active for 17 days before the majority were struck down on Tuesday. Some were run under the banner of the "European Australian Movement". Others were labelled "White Australia Victoria," or "White Australia Queensland". The group of accounts mostly reposted the same heavily blurred photos of neo-nazi meet-ups or footage from their attempts to disrupt other protests. "We have multiple groups in every state of this country," one post on the WA account boasted. "No matter where you are in Australia, there is something for you to do! Find your local chapter today and get active." READ MORE: Christmas is nearly here - what shops will be open? Many of their posts invited users to join their chats on the encrypted messaging app Telegram. Some clips showed members of the group placing neo-nazi stickers in suburban playgrounds. A TikTok live broadcast on the evening of December 9 hosted by the network's page praised Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. When asked by a viewer what the point of the page was, a member under the WA account said "We're advocating for national socialism mate." "We're advocating for the rights of white Australians, because we believe this country was founded as a whites-only ethnostate. "We follow national socialism, that's our ideology." "Adolf Hitler is our leader," a person on the Queensland account added. TikTok live streams hosted by the accounts were seen by 9News.com.au on three occasions between December 9 and December 17. The content of these accounts and their posts appeared to directly contravene TikTok's community guidelines. "We do not allow the presence of violent and hateful organizations or individuals on our platform," TikTok's rules say. "We do not allow anyone to promote or provide material support to violent or hateful actors." These rules extend to recruitment attempts. On December 11, 9News.com.au asked TikTok whether this content was permitted on their platform, and if not, what steps would they take to remove it. On December 17, the accounts were deleted, but not before some of the videos amassed tens of thousands of views. The next day, TikTok confirmed that it was investigating the issue and that some of the accounts were being taken down. Some replacement accounts from the network are already active, with a letter changed here or there in the usernames. They're posting the same footage and photos as before. READ MORE: Drinking this much wine could halve your heart attack risk, study suggests In the wake of several antisemitic attacks in Sydney and Melbourne, experts condemned the neo-nazi content and said TikTok should be doing more to prevent it. "TikTok needs to stop playing whack-a-mole with hate and start wielding a sledgehammer," chairman of the Anti-Defamation Commission Dr Dvir Abramovich said. Abramovich said that TikTok should introduce more sophisticated methods to stop this content from appearing online. "TikTok's algorithms are sophisticated enough to make videos go viral within seconds. And they can certainly detect and eradicate white supremacist content before it spreads. "If TikTok can fine-tune its technology to amplify trends, it can fine-tune it to eradicate the roots of neo-Nazism. He urged TikTok to introduce permanent bans, IP blocking and digital fingerprinting to cut off access completely. "TikTok can't be a playground for hate. If they don't take a stand now, they're not just allowing white nationalists to spew their filth — they're complicit in spreading it." He said the accounts, left unchecked, could pose a serious threat to Australian society. "Today it's online rants. Tomorrow, it's real-world attacks. Remember Christchurch? That horror was born online. This is not a theoretical threat — this is a clear and present danger. "This isn't just an online problem. "What begins in the shadows of these platforms can and will spill onto our streets, our schools, and our communities." READ MORE: Essential workers and low-income Aussies offered discounts on electric cars Another leader in the Jewish community echoed Abramovich's concerns. 'We are deeply concerned that neo-nazi accounts are using TikTok as a recruiting ground in Australia," Jewish Council of Australia Chief Executive Dr Max Kaiser said. "They are taking advantage of lax social media regulation to propagate their message, often targeting young neurodivergent and disaffected men." "The Australian Government and the esafety commissioner must take immediate action to prevent TikTok and other social media platforms from being used to recruit for these hateful, racist groups. "The recent antisemitic attack on the Adass Israel synagogue only highlights how unacceptable it is that this extremist racist content is being allowed to freely spread. If it is not stopped it will lead to racial violence." TikTok has been approached for comment. A representative for TikTok said they were investigating the issue and were in the process of taking the accounts down. They did not give any further comment. Roivios Initiates Landmark Study to Demonstrate Safety and Efficacy of an Innovative Renal Assist Device for Cardiac Surgery Patients With Kidney Disease NASSAU, Bahamas , Dec. 19, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Roivios , a pioneering clinical-stage medical device company dedicated to revolutionizing kidney health, proudly announces that its research and development arm, 3ive Labs, has secured approval for an Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) from the FDA. This approval paves the way for a pivotal trial of the JuxtaFlow Renal Assist Device (RAD), marking a transformative step forward in enhancing outcomes for cardiac surgery patients with renal insufficiency. The GRADIENT ( G roundbreaking R enal A ssist D evice I ntervening to EN hance cardio T horacic surgery outcomes) trial is designed to address the critical need for renal support among cardiac surgery patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). These patients often face increased risks of postoperative complications, such as worsening renal dysfunction, which can lead to extended ICU stays and increased mortality. "The GRADIENT Trial offers an invaluable opportunity to further explore renal support during cardiac surgery," said Dr. Evelio Rodriguez , a renowned heart surgeon at Ascension Saint Thomas in Nashville, TN , and the National Principal Investigator of the GRADIENT trial. "The JuxtaFlow device offers new hope for some of our most vulnerable patients." JuxtaFlow RAD is an innovative device designed to potentially improve kidney function during times of acute stress. By applying a gentle suction to the kidney's outlet, it aims to enhance blood filtration more efficiently. This groundbreaking approach was recognized with an FDA Breakthrough Device Designation in April. The GRADIENT study will be a prospective, multicenter, randomized, controlled, open-label trial that plans to enroll patients with renal insufficiency (eGFR 15-60 ml/min) undergoing elective or urgent cardiac surgery requiring CPB. The study seeks to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the JuxtaFlow RAD to sustain or enhance renal function during and following CPB surgery. "Achieving Breakthrough Device Designation was instrumental in securing IDE approval," noted John Erbey , Chief Executive Officer at Roivios. "This initiative is the culmination of a decade of technological and clinical advancements in addressing kidney disease management challenges. Our ongoing dialogue with the FDA is paving the way for more effective management, empowering patients to thrive. We are eager to commence IDE enrollment and explore the JuxtaFlow RAD's potential to improve surgical outcomes and enhance patient quality of life." About JuxtaFlow RAD The JuxtaFlow RAD is a pioneering investigational device set to transform kidney support therapy. Acknowledging the harmful effects of fluid accumulation and pressure on the kidneys, Roivios has advanced beyond traditional blood filtration methods that can further stress the kidneys. By applying mild, controlled negative pressure within the kidney's collecting system, the device has the potential to maintain and improve filtration and support recovery. This novel approach holds promise for a compelling value proposition by preserving kidney function and expediting patient recovery, ultimately reducing hospital stays and associated costs. Equipped with a proprietary specialized catheters and pump, the device optimizes kidney function during critical recovery periods, such as post-surgery. Currently, the JuxtaFlow RAD is under investigation and is not available for sale in any geography. About Roivios Roivios is a clinical-stage medical device company committed to pioneering solutions for kidney health. Our lead product, the JuxtaFlow Renal Assist Device (RAD), is designed to preserve kidney function and offer a proactive approach to managing kidney disease. More info An resident in Edinburgh has uncovered vintage video footage of Niddrie and Craigmillar filmed in 1998 - giving a fascinating look into the area's not-so-distant past. Billy McKirdy took the video as a visual record of the streets at the time while studying an HNC in Public Arts Project Management. As reported by Edinburgh Live, he wanted to preserve the area before much of the neighbourhood’s existing housing stock was demolished. The clip is filmed outside a car window that weaves up and down residential streets. Along Niddrie Mains Road , the video captures iconic local haunts such as The White House and the Castle Tavern - which was known for the peculiar sight of a three-legged German Shepherd which prowled its rooftop and barked at passers-by. Locals will notice the Kwik Save which was located in the area before the convenience store chain went out of business in 2007. Craigmillar Castle is also captured, although the centuries-old structure looks much the same as it does today. The streets are noticeably quieter with fewer cars and pedestrians alike and the video's grainy quality lends the film a nostalgic air that will be striking to any lifelong Niddrie and Craigmillar resident. Billy commented on the bygone version of Niddrie and Craigmillar from 26 years ago. He said: “The mix of public and private housing has been the most notable change in the area, from a community that was overwhelmingly social housing that situation has changed completely, the result is that many people brought up in the area are now unable to secure a move back into the community, I do think the change in the mixture of housing has been a positive thing. “The vast majority of the council housing has disappeared, the street layouts and indeed the street names have changed too. The familiar faces of the people who used to live here that are no longer around.” He also spoke to how the film’s emotional tug for those who remember the area in time gone by, saying: “It makes me feel very nostalgic, things are different now and in many ways better but conversely I can say the same about the past as well.” Billy is now part of an archive team at Craigmillar Now that is creating a digital archive of the community’s past. (AP) — Defending the run has been one of the Green Bay Packers’ weaknesses over the last several years. Not so much lately, though. Green Bay limited San Francisco to 16 carries for 44 yards in a 38-10 rout of the 49ers on Nov. 24, with two-time All-Pro Christian McCaffrey gaining 31 yards on 11 attempts. Four nights later, the Packers beat Miami 30-17 by holding the Dolphins to 39 yards on 14 carries. It was the first time since 1995 — and only the second time since 1950 — that the Packers had allowed fewer than 45 yards rushing in back-to-back games within the same season. “I think we’re playing harder and harder each week,” first-year defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley said. “And that’s how you play good defense.” That defense needs to be at its best Thursday as the Packers (9-3) close a stretch of three games in 12 days by visiting the NFC North-leading Detroit Lions (12-1), who have the NFL’s highest-scoring offense thanks in part to a rushing attack featuring the speedy Jahmyr Gibbs and the physical David Montgomery. “Gibbs is a great running back,” defensive lineman Kenny Clark said. “I really think the offense really starts with him, honestly. He can do everything — receive, in-and-out runner, can do stretch, duo plays. We’ve got to have all hands on deck with Gibbs. And then Montgomery, he’s a great complement to him. He can do everything, also.” The Lions were the first team since the 1975 Miami Dolphins to rush for at least 100 yards and a touchdown in each of their first 11 games. The streak ended on Thanksgiving when the Lions rushed for 194 yards but didn’t have a touchdown on the ground in a 23-20 victory over the Chicago Bears. Green Bay outrushed Detroit 138-124 in the Packers’ 24-14 loss to the Lions on Nov. 3 at Lambeau Field. Montgomery rushed for 73 yards while Gibbs ran for 65 yards and a touchdown. Gibbs has 973 yards this season, which ranks fourth in the NFL. Montgomery ran for a combined 192 yards and four touchdowns in the Lions’ two games against the Packers last season. Green Bay’s run defense has come a long way since. The Packers have allowed 106.6 yards rushing per game this season, which ranks eighth in the league. The Packers haven’t closed a season in the top 10 in run defense since 2016 and have finished outside the top 20 in four of the last six years, including 26th in 2022 and 28th in 2023. “I think Haf’s doing a good job of mixing up the fronts and some of the coverages, but really it’s ultimately about tackling, swarming, getting many hats to the football,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said. “And our guys have really embraced that style of play.” The Packers are yielding 4.2 yards per carry to rank seventh in the league after finishing 22nd or worst in that category each of the last three seasons. They haven’t closed a season ranked in the top 10 in yards allowed per carry since 2017. Hafley says the improvement starts up front. “The interior part of our D-line has done such a good job these last few games,” Hafley said. “They really have. They’re hard to block. They’re staying in their gaps. They’re tearing off of blocks, and it’s the same thing with those defensive ends. They’re setting edges, they’re forcing the ball back inside, they’re getting off blocks and then we’re tackling and we’re running to the ball and there’s multiple people to the ball. “And when you turn on our tape right now and when you freeze it, you see that. You see a lot of guys around the football. And then you’re not afraid, right? Like if I have an open-field tackle and I know eight other guys are coming, I’m going to take my shot because I know if I miss, it’s going to be, ‘Bang, bang, bang,’ we’ve got three or four other guys there, and we’re starting to play faster.” Green Bay's defense has the Lions’ attention. “They’ve been playing well,” Detroit coach Dan Campbell said. “I mean, they have, really, all season, and nothing has changed.” AP Sports Writer Larry Lage contributed to this report. Arm Holdings ‘ lawsuit against Qualcomm ended in a mistrial on Friday, with a jury delivering a mixed verdict that found for Qualcomm on a crucial issue, saying Qualcomm had properly licensed its Snapdragon central processor chips. Arm’s shares were down 1.8% in extended trading after the news, and the San Diego-based wireless pioneer’s shares were up 1.8%. The outcome means the case could be tried again in the future. Judge Maryellen Noreika, who presided over the case in U.S. federal court in Delaware, encouraged Arm and Qualcomm to mediate their dispute. “I don’t think either side had a clear victory or would have had a clear victory if this case is tried again,” Noreika told the parties. After more than nine hours of deliberations over two days, the eight-person jury in U.S. federal court could not reach a unanimous verdict on the question of whether Nuvia, a startup that Qualcomm purchased for $1.4 billion in 2021, breached the terms of its license with Arm. But the jury found that Qualcomm did not breach Nuvia’s license with Arm. Support timely, comprehensive news. We have launched our year-end campaign. Our goal: Raise $50,000 by Dec. 31. The jury also found that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips created using Nuvia technology, which have been central to Qualcomm’s push into the personal computer market, are properly licensed under its own agreement with Arm, clearing the way for Qualcomm to continue selling them. “The jury has vindicated Qualcomm’s right to innovate and affirmed that all the Qualcomm products at issue in the case are protected by Qualcomm’s contract with Arm,” Qualcomm said in a statement. Arm did not immediately return Reuters requests for comment. “My biggest worry was what happens to the future roadmap if they no longer have access to Nuvia (computing) cores,” Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon said. “At this point, that risk is a lot closer to being off the table.” Get Our Free Daily Email Newsletter Get the latest local and California news from Times of San Diego delivered to your inbox at 8 a.m. daily. The government was forced to deny rumours that President Bashar Assad had fled the country. The loss of Homs is a potentially crippling blow for Assad. It stands at an important intersection between Damascus and Syria's coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus — the Syrian leader's base of support and home to a Russian strategic naval base. The pro-government Sham FM reported that government forces took positions outside Syria's third-largest city, without elaborating. Rami Abdurrahman who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said Syrian troops and members of different security agencies have withdrawn from the city, adding that rebels have entered parts of it. The capture of Homs is a major victory for insurgents, who have already seized the cities of Aleppo and Hama, as well as large parts of the south, in a lightning offensive that began November 27. Analysts said Homs falling into rebel hands would be a game-changer. The rebels' moves around Damascus, reported by the monitor and a rebel commander, came after the Syrian army withdrew from much of southern part of the country, leaving more areas, including several provincial capitals, under the control of opposition fighters. The advances in the past week were among the largest in recent years by opposition factions, led by a group that has its origins in al-Qaida and is considered a terrorist organisation by the US and the United Nations. In their push to overthrow Assad's government, the insurgents, led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, or HTS, have met little resistance from the Syrian army. For the first time in the country's long-running civil war, the government now has control of only three of 14 provincial capitals: Damascus, Latakia and Tartus. The UN's special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, on Saturday called for urgent talks in Geneva to ensure an “orderly political transition”. Speaking to reporters at the annual Doha Forum in Qatar, he said the situation in Syria was changing by the minute. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, whose country is Assad's chief international backer, said he feels “sorry for the Syrian people”. In Damascus, people rushed to stock up on supplies. Thousands went to Syria's border with Lebanon, trying to leave the country. Many shops in the capital were shuttered, a resident told The Associated Press, and those still open ran out of staples such as sugar. Some were selling items at three times the normal price. “The situation is very strange. We are not used to that,” the resident said, insisting on anonymity, fearing retributions. “People are worried whether there will be a battle (in Damascus) or not.” It was the first time that opposition forces reached the outskirts of Damascus since 2018, when Syrian troops recaptured the area following a years-long siege. The UN said it was moving noncritical staff outside the country as a precaution. Assad's status Syria's state media denied social media rumours that Assad left the country, saying he is performing his duties in Damascus. He has had little, if any, help from his allies. Russia, is busy with its war in Ukraine. Lebanon's Hezbollah, which at one point sent thousands of fighters to shore up Assad's forces, has been weakened by a yearlong conflict with Israel. Iran has seen its proxies across the region degraded by regular Israeli airstrikes. US President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday posted on social media that that the United States should avoid engaging militarily in Syria. Pedersen said a date for talks in Geneva on the implementation a UN resolution, adopted in 2015, and calling for a Syrian-led political process, would be announced later. The resolution calls for the establishment of a transitional governing body, followed by the drafting of a new constitution and ending with UN-supervised elections. Later Saturday, foreign ministers and senior diplomats from eight key countries, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, Egypt, Turkey and Iran, along with Pederson, gathered on the sidelines of the Doha Summit to discuss the situation in Syria. No details were immediately available. The insurgents' march Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said insurgents were in the Damascus suburbs of Maadamiyah, Jaramana and Daraya. Opposition fighters were marching toward the Damascus suburb of Harasta, he added. A commander with the insurgents, Hassan Abdul-Ghani, posted on the Telegram messaging app that opposition forces had begun the “final stage” of their offensive by encircling Damascus. HTS controls much of northwest Syria and in 2017 set up a “salvation government” to run day-to-day affairs in the region. In recent years, HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani has sought to remake the group's image, cutting ties with al-Qaida, ditching hard-line officials and vowing to embrace pluralism and religious tolerance. The shock offensive began on November 27, during which gunmen captured the northern city of Aleppo, Syria's largest, and the central city of Hama, the country's fourth largest city. Opposition activists said Saturday that a day earlier, insurgents entered Palmyra, which is home to invaluable archaeological sites had been in government hands since being taken from the Islamic State group in 2017. To the south, Syrian troops left much of the province of Quneitra including the main Baath City, activists said. Syrian Observatory said government troops have withdrawn from much of the two southern provinces. The Syrian army said in a statement that it carried out redeployment and repositioning in Sweida and Daraa after its checkpoints came under attack by “terrorists". The army said it was setting up a “strong and coherent defensive and security belt in the area”, apparently to defend Damascus from the south. The Syrian government has referred to opposition gunmen as terrorists since conflict broke out in March 2011. Diplomacy in Doha The foreign ministers of Iran, Russia and Turkiye, meeting in Qatar, called for an end to the hostilities. Turkiye is a main backer of the rebels. Qatar's top diplomat, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, criticised Assad for failing to take advantage of the lull in fighting in recent years to address the country's underlying problems. “Assad didn't seize this opportunity to start engaging and restoring his relationship with his people,” he said. Sheikh Mohammed said he was surprised by how quickly the rebels have advanced and said there is a real threat to Syria's “territorial integrity”. He said the war could “damage and destroy what is left if there is no sense of urgency” to start a political process. This approach allows ticket prices to fluctuate based on factors such as holidays, injuries, team records, day of the week, and weather forecasts. By implementing dynamic pricing, these entities can recover revenue that would otherwise go to scalpers or third-party vendors, reducing ticket touting. Dynamic pricing also helps undercut secondary prices, forcing scalpers to lower their own prices and bringing exchange prices closer to face value. Although this strategy decreases buying volume and profit margins in secondary markets, it effectively combats fraudulent activities and overpricing. Notable secondary ticket vendors employing dynamic pricing include Live Nation Entertainment and TiqIQ. The secondary ticket market continues to be a significant trend in the events industry.
