You’ve described “Polostan” as a passion project. Which elements of the story first grabbed you? I like writing historical fiction. Of all the projects I’ve worked on in my career, the ones that I have the fondest memories for tend to be the historical books. Even some of my science fiction-y books have historical content in them. So I wanted to go back to writing historical fiction on a big scale. My secret sauce is anything to do with science and technology. [“Polostan” features] a hugely important era in the history of the modern world, but one of the things that makes it interesting and important is what was happening, unbeknownst to most people, in the world of science at that time. The Dawn/Aurora character is a classic outsider – a bit adrift, never quite at home in either the U.S. or the Soviet Union. Has she been fun to write? Oh, very fun. One of the things that I enjoy doing is taking established tropes from literature or film and trying to come at them from a new angle. So there’s an established trope of the femme fatale Russian female agent. I thought, If somebody like that really existed during the era that I’m covering here, the ’30s and ’40s, then how could such a person have come into existence? How could you have somebody who’s equally conversant in both the English and Russian languages to the point where native speakers of those languages would assume she was born and raised in their country? It turned out it was actually pretty easy to tell that story in a realistic way because there was this era right after the Russian Revolution in the late teens and early 1920s, when there was a lot of back and forth between the Soviet Union and the United States. It was before we had the Cold War and before we had this state of hostility that’s existed between the two countries more recently. A lot of Americans with leftist sympathies went over there because they thought it was the future. And so it was pretty easy to find accounts of those kinds of people. It didn’t take long for them to sour on the whole thing and to see some of the negative aspects of what was going on. But for a few years people were going back and forth like this all the time. Why polo of all things? The more I learned about the sport, the more I became aware that the way we think of it now isn’t the way people thought of it a hundred years ago. Now, it’s probably the most upper-crust sport you can do. But a hundred years ago, it was also a sport that was played routinely by cavalry units all over the world as a training exercise. So in the Soviet Union, they played polo there because they had horse cavalry. And then I became aware that there were polo-pony ranches in eastern Wyoming around Gillette, where these ponies were bred, raised, trained, and sold to the international market. The people who worked on those ranches who were cowboys, cowgirls – white, Native American, Hispanic, Black – they played polo because it was part of their job. You can’t train one of these ponies without using it to play the sport. So my idea of what polo was changed to something that cut through all strata of society. And that gave me the idea that connections could be made between characters who normally wouldn’t have had anything to do with each other. This is such an interesting time to publish a story about U.S.-Russian spy games. How has the more recent history of the two countries shaped your thinking about the series? The big change that occurred since I started working on it about 10 years ago was the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Then, I may have been more inclined to see Russia and Ukraine as kind of more sibling countries and capable of somehow relating to each other in a more friendly way. Since the invasion, I started to educate myself a little bit and learned about the famine, the Holodomor, that wiped out millions of Ukrainians in 1933. Until I learned a little bit more about it, I was inclined to accept the view “Oh yeah, it’s too bad, the harvest failed; bad things happen, what a shame.” But when you actually read about what happened, you can see it was a sort of deliberate act of genocide that was carried out by decisions made in Moscow. It was a way of crushing Ukraine, and absorbing it more completely in the system that they wanted to build. It shouldn’t have been news to me, but it was. Is the series all mapped out? It’ll certainly be at least three [books]. Beyond that, never say never. The book is shorter and thinner than a lot of my books. That’s by design. My editor and I made the decision to bring them out as they’re ready, so publication will be spread out over a few years.

According to Sheriff Kory Honea, investigators determined Litton’s motivation for the shooting on a typed on a note found on his body, as well as subsequent correspondence to other people. Honea said evidence indicates Litton targeted the school because of its affiliation with the Seventh-Day Adventist church. Litton held a belief the Seventh-Day Adventists were involved in the genocide and oppression of Palestinians, as well as the U. S. attack on Yemen, according to Honea. Honea said Litton’s most recent activity is described as being homeless, and that he spent time between the Sacramento and Chico area. Litton had a lengthy criminal history and history of mental health issues, and he was first imprisoned in 1991 for theft with and other convictions include theft fraud forgery in 1990s to early 2000s, Honea said. Litton was reported to have severe mental health issues from the age of 16 moving forward. Honea said there was no official diagnosis. Litten was most recently arrested on Nov. 12 for being inside a stolen pickup and for possession of false identification under the name of “Michael Sanders.” He was released from San Mateo County Jail on Nov. 21, took a bus to the Chico area, and stayed in various hotels in the Chico area. On Dec. 4, Litton was was in the vicinity of the Motel 6 in Chico, and around 7:45 a.m. he got onto a bus at Second and Salem streets in Chico, then exited the bus at Montgomery and Myers in Oroville, carrying a large duffel bag. This was when Litton was driven by an Uber driver to the school to attend an appointment he made with school administration and to carry out the shooting, according to Honea. Litton’s story was that his daughter recently moved to Gridley, and he wanted his grandson to go to the Feather River school. “As it turns out, that was all a lie,” Honea said. “It appears to us that story was a ruse to set up an appointment so that he could gain access to the campus.” Honea said the man claimed to be a lieutenant for an organization called The International Alliance. Investigators believe there are no organizations that call themselves The International Alliance and “is active in this regard.” “There’s nothing we’ve found no information to believe that this organization has some kind of military structure,” Honea said. Honea also identified the two boys injured in the shooting as Roman Mendez, 6, and Elias Wolford, 5. Mendez sustained two gunshot wounds resulting in internal injuries, Honea said. Wolford was shot one time in the abdomen that resulted in internal injuries. The boys continue to be in critical but stable condition as they continue treatment at local hospitals, according to a social media update posted at 10 a.m. Thursday by the Butte County Sheriff’s Office. “It is likely they will need a number of surgeries going forward,” Honea said. “The fact that they are still with us is a miracle and something we can be hopeful for.” The shooting was reported at 1:08 p.m. Wednesday at the school near Highway 99 and Cox Lane. First responders found two boys injured and one man lying on the ground, dead from an apparent self-inflected gunshot wound. An investigation to learn about the shooting is being coordinated by the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, the Butte County District Attorney’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Sacramento. A vigil for the victims will be held 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Oroville Convention Center, 1200 Myers St. The vigil will have cards at a table to sign that will be delivered to the injured boys, Oroville Mayor David Pittman said. All schools under the jurisdiction of the Northern California Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church closed today in light of the shooting, according to an email by the organization Thursday afternoon. Oroville schools have remained open following the shooting, said Butte County Office of Education communication officer Travis Souders. Director of IIT Kanpur Manindra Agarwal told PTI that the institution received a letter from the police department stating that the NOC (No Objection Certificate) issued for Khan to pursue the PhD programme had been cancelled. "Soon after getting the letter, the institute also terminated the PhD programme of Mohd Mohsin Khan, the then ACP Kanpur. The written communication has been made regarding termination," Agarwal said. On December 24, the student lodged an FIR against Khan on charges of criminal intimidation and defaming her. Abortion has become slightly more common despite bans or deep restrictions in most Republican-controlled states, and the legal and political fights over its future are not over yet. It's now been two and a half years since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and opened the door for states to implement bans. The policies and their impact have been in flux ever since the ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. Here's a look at data on where things stand: Overturning Roe and enforcing abortion bans has changed how woman obtain abortions in the U.S. But one thing it hasn't done is put a dent in the number of abortions being obtained. There have been slightly more monthly abortions across the country recently than there were in the months leading up to the June 2022 ruling, even as the number in states with bans dropped to near zero. “Abortion bans don’t actually prevent abortions from happening,” said Ushma Upadhyay, a public health social scientist at the University of California San Francisco. But, she said, they do change care. For women in some states, there are major obstacles to getting abortions — and advocates say that low-income, minority and immigrant women are least likely to be able to get them when they want. For those living in states with bans, the ways to access abortion are through travel or abortion pills. As the bans swept in, abortion pills became a bigger part of the equation. They were involved in about half the abortions before Dobbs. More recently, it’s been closer to two-thirds of them, according to research by the Guttmacher Institute. The uptick of that kind of abortion, usually involving a combination of two drugs, was underway before the ruling. But now, it's become more common for pill prescriptions to be made by telehealth. By the summer of 2024, about 1 in 10 abortions was via pills prescribed via telehealth to patients in states where abortion is banned. As a result, the pills are now at the center of battles over abortion access. This month, Texas sued a New York doctor for prescribing pills to a Texas woman via telemedicine. There's also an effort by Idaho, Kansas and Missouri to roll back their federal approvals and treat them as “controlled dangerous substances,” and a push for the federal government to start enforcing a 19th-century federal law to ban mailing them. Clinics have closed or halted abortions in states with bans. But a network of efforts to get women seeking abortions to places where they're legal has strengthened and travel for abortion is now common. The Guttmacher Institute found that more than twice as many Texas residents obtained abortion in 2023 in New Mexico as New Mexico residents did. And as many Texans received them in Kansas as Kansans. Abortion funds, which benefitted from “rage giving” in 2022, have helped pay the costs for many abortion-seekers. But some funds have had to cap how much they can give . Since the downfall of Roe, the actions of lawmakers and courts have kept shifting where abortion is legal and under what conditions. Here's where it stands now: Florida, the nation’s third most-populous state, began enforcing a ban on abortions after the first six weeks of pregnancy on May 1. That immediately changed the state from one that was a refuge for other Southerners seeking abortion to an exporter of people looking for them. There were about 30% fewer abortions there in May compared with the average for the first three months of the year. And in June, there were 35% fewer. While the ban is not unique, the impact is especially large. The average driving time from Florida to a facility in North Carolina where abortion is available for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy is more than nine hours, according to data maintained by Caitlin Myers, a Middlebury College economics professor. The bans have meant clinics closed or stopped offering abortions in some states. This is important as it appears all of the BYU starters, including quarterback Jake Retzlaff will play. So far this season, he’s completed 57.6% of his passes for 2,793 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 10 picks, and he’s run for 476 yards and six touchdowns. BYU went 10-2 this season, losing two of their last three games to Arizona State and Kansas. I don’t think any BYU corner will be able to hang with Hunter. I also think the Colorado pass rush could get to Retzlaff enough to put him in a spot to turn the ball over. Miami (FL) -3.5 (-110) Where: BetMGM Sportsbook Why: After ending the season with two losses and missing the College Football Playoff, Miami quarterback Cam Ward will suit up and play in the Pop-Tarts Bowl against a feisty Iowa State defense. This will be an excellent opportunity for him to build on his draft stock and, hopefully, surpass Sanders in the 2025 NFL Draft. However, it’s not going to be necessarily all that easy. The Cyclones allow 23.1 points (39th) and just 165.1 passing yards (fifth) per game. That said, they also faced a player like Ward this season. They went 10-3, losing to Arizona State, Kansas, and Texas Tech. This season, Ward threw for 4,123 yards (second) and 36 touchdowns (first). He also completed 67.4% of his passes. The Hurricanes defense has been fairly poor this season, but I’m not a huge fan of Cyclones quarterback Rocco Becht. Thus far, he’s completing just 58.7% of his passes for 3,240 yards, 7.6 yards per attempt, 22 touchdowns, and nine picks. He also has 19 turnover-worthy plays. He’s completed less than his average completion percentage in four games this season, including an outing against Kansas State, where he completed just 13 of 36 passes. Iowa State will certainly be a challenge, but I expect Ward to take advantage of the mismatch between slot receiver Xavier Restrepo and Cyclones slot corner Jeremiah Cooper. Miami will win this game and cover. Boston College +4 (-110) Where: Caesars Sportsbook Boston College and Nebraska are set to face off at Yankee Stadium in the Pinstripes Bowl. The weather isn’t looking all too great. There’s a 40% chance of rain. Boston College will be without quarterback Thomas Castellanos, but that’s been the case since Boston College lost to Louisville at home on Oct. 25. Since then, Grayson James has been the starter. In four starts this season, James has thrown at least one touchdown pass in each of them. In his most recent outing against Pitt, he played incredibly well, completing 71.4% of his passes for 253 yards, nine yards per attempt, two touchdown passes, and zero interceptions. Nebraska does have quarterback Dylan Raiola, but there’s not a lot else around him. Players like Jimari Butler, Mikai Gbayor, Nate Boerkircher, and Isaiah Neyor won’t be playing. All of these players were starters for the team. There are nearly 20 players out due to the transfer portal. James has played well enough to hang with Raiola here. They’ll keep this one close enough in what could be poor weather to cover. Army -17 (-107) Where: DraftKings Sportsbook Army will take on Louisiana Tech in the Independence Bowl. Louisiana Tech is a 5-7 team, but they’re in the game after Marshall was forced to opt out due to too many players entering the transfer portal. Army will be without running back Kanye Udoh, who rushed 179 times for 1,111 yards, 6.2 yards per carry, and 10 rushing touchdowns. Still, the team has Bryson Daily. He had 29 rushing touchdowns this season and 1,528 rushing yards. Louisiana Tech allows 125.6 rushing yards per game. The Army defense is in the top 30 passing yards allowed (193.7) and in the top 15 rushing yards (112.8) per game. The quarterback for Louisiana Tech appears to be Evan Bullock. He has just two interceptions across 274 attempts but also has 11 turnover-worthy plays. His Achilles heel is fumbles. He has nine fumbles this season.
