4 letters nickname Arsenal delivered the statement Champions League win Mikel Arteta had demanded as they swept aside Sporting Lisbon 5-1. Arteta wanted his team to prove their European credentials following some underwhelming displays away from home, and the Gunners manager got exactly what he asked for. Goals from Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Magalhaes, Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard got their continental campaign back on track in style following the 1-0 defeat at Inter Milan last time out. A memorable victory also ended Sporting’s unbeaten start to the season, a streak of 17 wins and one draw, the vast majority of which prompted Manchester United to prise away head coach Ruben Amorim. The Gunners had failed to win or score in their two away games in the competition so far this season, but they made a blistering start in the Portuguese capital and took the lead after only seven minutes. Declan Rice fed overlapping full-back Jurrien Timber, who curled a low cross in behind the home defence for Martinelli to finish at the far post. Arsenal doubled their lead in the 20th minute thanks to a glorious ball over the top from Thomas Partey. Saka escaped the clutches of his marker Maximiliano Araujo to beat the offside trap and poke the ball past advancing goalkeeper Franco Israel for Havertz to tap home. It was a scintillating first-half display which completely overshadowed the presence of Viktor Gyokeres in Sporting’s attack. The prolific Sweden striker, formerly of Coventry, has been turning the heads of Europe’s top clubs with his 24 goals in 17 games this season – including a hat-trick against Manchester City earlier this month. But the only time he got a sniff of a run at goal after an optimistic long ball, he was marshalled out of harm’s way by Gabriel. David Raya was forced into one save, tipping a fierce Geovany Quenda drive over the crossbar. But Arsenal added a third on the stroke of half-time, Gabriel charging in to head Rice’s corner into the back of the net. To rub salt in the wound, the Brazilian defender mimicked Gyokeres’ hands-over-his-face goal celebration. That may have wound Sporting up as they came out after the interval meaning business, and they pulled one back after Raya tipped Hidemasa Morita’s shot behind, with Goncalo Inacio netting at the near post from the corner. Former Tottenham winger Marcus Edwards fired over, as did Gyokeres, with Arsenal temporarily on the back foot. But when Martin Odegaard’s darting run into the area was halted by Ousmane Diomande’s foul, Saka tucked away the penalty. Substitute Trossard added the fifth with eight minutes remaining, heading in the rebound after Mikel Merino’s shot was saved, and Gyokeres’ miserable night was summed up when his late shot crashed back off the post.

Miles Johns was just boarding his flight to Las Vegas for a fight against Cody Garbrandt when he got a call from his manager. He knew there was no chance it was good news. “Jason [House] called me and if he calls me on fight week like that I already know something’s not good,” Johns told MMA Fighting. “He lets me know Cody is out but just stay the course, we’re going to look for a new replacement, we’re going to look for a new opponent. I’m staying on the diet and everything. I really thought that they were going to find somebody.” The fight cancellation was understandably frustrating considering Johns was already cutting weight and jumping on a plane bound for Las Vegas when he got word. The matchup was scrapped after a previous delay pushed the fight back from October to November. This time around, Johns found out Garbrandt was actually dropping out of the fight but he wasn’t upset about the cancellation as much as he was the lack of response he heard from his opponent. “I’ve had to pull out of a fight on the Wednesday before a fight because during my training session, I freaking dislocated my shoulder, tore my labrum, tore my chest,” Johns explained. “I know how that happens. But immediately after it happened, I put up something on social media [saying] so sorry to my opponent Raoni Barcelos , I feel bad for him, I feel bad for everyone who is expected it, things happen but it’s the way you go about it. “The thing about Cody, he supposedly had vertigo and he was getting dizzy at the [UFC Performance Institute]. I mean this dude has had vertigo since 2012. He’s been going to therapy for it this whole time. I feel like he’s been dealing with this. He decided he was going to take the fight. He pushed the fight back and then decided ‘oh yeah, I’m going to do this’ and then I don’t know if he felt my energy fight week or if he was watching my stuff and thought ‘this young dude is going to come in here and knock my ass out and I’m looking to go out on my last fight with somebody with a bigger name.’ I don’t know what it was. Then he pulls out and just goes radio silent, doesn’t say anything.” As much as he wishes Garbrandt at least messaged him privately to apologize or explain what happened, Johns isn’t holding a grudge but he also had no desire to revisit that matchup again. “I’m still giving him the benefit of the doubt,” Johns said about Garbrandt. “I still like the dude. When I was watching him growing up before I was in the UFC, I always looked up to him, I always had a lot of respect and I don’t want to lose that respect. “I don’t really know what he’s going through. At the end of the day, I just hope he’s happy with his decisions. Because it seems like he just wants to ride off into the sunset on a motorcycle and that’s all fine and good but before you do that, you better walk through the fire or your soul is not going to be free. I’m moved on past it. Forget that dude and we’ve got bigger things ahead of us.” Johns actually had every intention of fighting anybody the UFC could throw at him that week in Las Vegas but when the promotion couldn’t secure a new opponent, he had to shift gears to a later date. Now he’s scheduled to face Felipe Lima at featherweight at UFC Tampa on Saturday with Johns revealing that it was his idea to put the fight at 145 pounds because he was only six pounds over the bantamweight limit when he got the word that he wouldn’t be competing in November. Going through another grueling weight cut just a few weeks later wasn’t going to be good for his body so Johns was happy to move up a division, if only for one night. While the change in opponents isn’t ideal, Johns still sees benefit in his new fight against Lima versus the matchup he was supposed to face with Garbrandt. “I feel like this fight reaps more benefits,” Johns said. “I feel like if I would have knocked Cody out, everybody’s just going to say he’s on his way out, he’s on his last leg anyway. But for some reason people are counting me out of this fight. They do this to me every single time. I’m like I’m finally going to shut you guys up. I’m going to go out and put this kid away and I think this one will give me some respect on my name.” If all goes well on Saturday, Johns already has an idea about his next fight and that might actually be a matchup that he could potentially take away from Garbrandt if he plays his cards right. “I’m done with [Cody] but him and [Dominick] Cruz had a long rivalry,” Johns said. “I go out there and I have a really good performance this time, I saw that Dominick Cruz was saying that he’s looking for one last dance. Looking to put a show on and if I have a good performance, why not throw me in that fight? “I have a lot of respect for him. He’s always giving me advice as a commentator. I’d be honored to give him his last fight.”

Emboldened by the view from the top of the NFC North, the Detroit Lions are out to eliminate nightmare holiday gatherings when the Chicago Bears come to town Thursday for a lunchtime division duel. The Lions (10-1) are streaking one direction, the Bears (4-7) the other in the first matchup of the season between teams on opposite ends of the division. Riding a nine-game winning streak, their longest since a 10-game streak during their first season in Detroit in 1934, the Lions are burdened by losses in their traditional Thanksgiving Day game the past seven seasons. Three of the defeats are courtesy of Chicago. The Bears and Lions get together for the 20th time on Thanksgiving -- the Bears have 11 wins -- this week in the first of two meetings between the teams in a 25-day span. Detroit goes to Soldier Field on Dec. 22. "I think there's two things," Campbell said of the Thanksgiving losing streak. "Number one -- Get a W. And it's a division win that's why this huge. Number two is because the players are going to get a couple of days off. So, they have family, friends in, it'd be nice to feel good about it when you're with everybody because it's just not real fun. It's not real fun to be around." Detroit (10-1) owns the best record in the NFC but the Lions aren't even assured of a division title. Minnesota sits one game behind them and Green Bay is two games back. The Bears (4-7) sit in last place and would likely need to run the table to have any chance of making the playoffs. The Lions have been dominant in all phases and haven't allowed a touchdown in the past 10 consecutive quarters. Detroit's offense ranks first in points per game (32.7) and second in total yardage (394.3) The Lions defense has not given up a touchdown in the last 10 quarters. Rookie placekicker Jake Bates has made all 16 of his field goal attempts, including four from 50-plus yards over the past three games. Chicago shows up in a foul mood. The Bears are saddled with a five-game losing streak and Chicago's defense has been destroyed for nearly 2,000 total yards in the last four games. The Bears failed to reach the 20-point mark four times in five outings since they last won a game. In their latest defeat, rookie quarterback Caleb Williams and the offense perked up but they lost to Minnesota in overtime, 30-27. "We have to play complementary football for us to be able to win these games," coach Matt Eberflus said. "The games we have won, we have done that. The games we have been close we've missed the mark a little bit. Over the course of the year, it's been one side or the other, this side or that side. In this league you have to be good on all sides to win. That's what we are searching for." Williams threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. The wide receiver trio of DJ Moore, Keenan Allen and Romeo Odunze combined for 21 receptions and two touchdowns while tight end Cole Kmet caught seven passes. "What I've been impressed with is just how he has grown," Campbell said. "He has grown every game but these last two I really feel like he's taken off and what they're doing with him has been really good for him and he just looks very composed. He doesn't get frazzled, plays pretty fast, and he's an accurate passer, big arm, and he's got some guys that can get open for him." Detroit's banged-up secondary could be susceptible against the Bears' veteran receivers in their bid to pull off an upset on Thursday. The Lions put two defensive backs on injured reserve in the past week and top cornerback Carlton Davis isn't expected to play due to knee and thumb injuries. Detroit offensive tackle Taylor Decker (knee) and top returner Kalif Raymond (foot) are also expected to miss the game, though Campbell expressed optimism that running back David Montgomery (shoulder), formerly of the Bears, would play. Bears safety Elijah Hicks was listed as a DNP for Tuesday's walkthrough. --Field Level MediaThe proposed legislation to restrict the age limit for social media use is destined to fail and may harbour another insidious purpose, writes Dr Binoy Kampmark . THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT is being run ragged in various quarters. When ragged, such a beast is bound to seek a distraction. And what better than finding a vulnerable group, preferably children, to feel outraged and noble about? The Albanese Government is confident of restricting the use of social media by children across the country by imposing an age limit. It is armed with such problematic instruments as South Australia’s Children (Social Media Safety) Bill 2024 , which will fine social media companies refusing to exclude children under the age of 14 from using their platforms, and a report by former High Court Chief Justice Robert French on the feasibility of such a move. On 21 November, the Government boastfully declared in a media release that it had officially ‘introduced world-leading legislation to enforce a minimum age of 16 years for social media’ . The proposed legislation, known as the Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Bill 2024 , is supposedly going to ‘deliver greater protections for young Australians during critical stages of their development’ . Government bans social media fearing rise of 'Generation Left' The recent announcement of age restrictions for social media use raises questions regarding the Government's true motives. The proposed legislation made something of an international splash. NBC News , for instance, called the bill ‘one of the toughest in the world’ , failing to note its absence of muscle. To that end, it remains thin on detail. These laws constitute yet another effort to concentrate power and responsibilities best held by the citizenry in the hands of a bureaucratic-political class governed by paranoia and procedure. They are also intended to place the onus on social media platforms to place restrictions upon those under 16 years of age from having accounts. The Government openly admits as much, seemingly treating parents as irresponsible and weak (their consent in this is irrelevant), and children as permanently threatened by spoliation. The media release states: ‘The law places the onus on social media platforms – not parents or young people – to take reasonable steps to ensure these protections are in place.’ If the platforms do not comply, they risk fines of up to $49.5 million. As for the contentious matter of privacy, the Prime Minister and his Communications Minister are adamant: ‘It will contain robust privacy provisions, including requiring the platforms to ringfence and destroy any information collected to safeguard the personal information of all Australians.’ The drafters of the bill have also taken liberties on what is deemed appropriate to access. As the media release mentions, Australia’s youth will still ‘have continued access to messaging and online gaming, as well as access to services which are health and education related, like Headspace, Kids Helpline, and Google Classroom, and YouTube.’ This daft regime is based on the premise it will survive circumvention. Children, through guile and instinctive perseverance, will always find a way to access forbidden fruit. Indeed, as the Digital Industry Group Inc ( DIGI ) says , this “20th-century response to 21st-century challenges” may well steer children into “dangerous, unregulated parts of the internet” . In May, documents uncovered under Freedom of Information by Guardian Australia identified that government wonks in the Communications Department were wondering if such a scheme was even viable. A document casting a sceptical eye over the use of age assurance technology was unequivocal: ‘No countries have implemented an age verification mandate without issue.’ Legal challenges have been launched in France and Germany against such measures. Circumvention has become a feature in various U.S. states doing the same, using Virtual Private Networks ( VPN s). While this proposed legislation will prove ineffectual in achieving its intended purpose – here, protecting the prelapsarian state of childhood from ruin at the hands of wicked digital platforms – it will also leave the apparatus of hefty regulation. One can hardly take remarks coming from the absurdly named office of the eSafety Commissioner , currently occupied by the authoritarian-minded Julie Inman Grant , seriously in stating that “regulators like eSafety have to be nimble” . Restrictions, prohibitions, bans and censorship regimes are, in their implementation, never nimble. Albanese's move to protect kids from social media 'problematic' Anthony Albanese's pledge to enforce age limits for the use of social media is a pointless endeavour that will create more problems than solving them. For all that, even Inman Grant has reservations about some of the Government’s assumptions, notably on the alleged link between social media and mental harm. The evidence for such a claim, she told BBC Radio 5 Live, “is not settled at all” . Indeed, certain vulnerable groups – she mentions LGBTQ+ and First Nations cohorts in particular – “feel more themselves online than they do in the real world” . Why not, Inman Grant suggests, teach children to use online platforms more safely? Children, she analogises, should be taught how to swim, rather than being banned from swimming itself. Instruct the young to swim; don’t ringfence the sea. Rather appositely, Lucas Lane – at 15, something of an entrepreneur selling boys nail polish via the online business Glossy Boys – told the BBC that the proposed ban “destroys... my friendships and the ability to make people feel seen”. Already holed without even getting out of port, this bill will serve another insidious purpose. While easily dismissed as having a stunted moral conscience, Elon Musk , who owns X Corp , is hard to fault for having certain suspicions about these draft rules. ‘Seems like a backdoor way to control access to the internet by all Australians,’ he wrote to a post from Prime Minister Albanese. One, unfortunately, among several. WNBA star Caitlin Clark has joined Cincinnati’s bid for a National Women’s Soccer League expansion team. Major League Soccer’s FC Cincinnati heads the group trying to bring a women’s pro team to the city. The club issued a statement confirming that Clark, a rookie for the Indiana Fever this season, had joined in the effort. “The NWSL Cincinnati bid team is thrilled that Caitlin Clark has joined our ownership group in pursuit of bringing women’s professional soccer to our city,” a team statement said. “Her passion for the sport, commitment to elevating women’s sports in and around the Greater Cincinnati region and influence as an athlete and a role model for women and girls around the world, make her a vital part of our compelling bid to become the 16th team in the NWSL.” NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman has said the league plans to announce the 16th team by the end of the year. She announced Friday there are three finalists: Cincinnati, Cleveland and Denver. The league’s 15th team will begin play in 2026 in Boston. The Orlando Pride and the Washington Spirit play Saturday for this season’s NWSL championship at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City. Clark, who earned WNBA Rookie of the Year honors, averaged 19.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and a league-best 8.4 assists this season for the Fever, who finished 20-20 and advanced to the playoffs for the first time since 2016. “Her accomplishments and contributions to women’s sports is incredible, historic. It’s changed the game for everyone and she’s amazing,” Berman said. “Having her interest in the NWSL is an honor. We couldn’t be more excited about her, having shared her own personal story about having been a young soccer player and loving the game, and her messaging around being a multisport athlete, is so important for young kids who aspire to be just like her.”

By Llazar Semini TIRANA, Albania — Albanian opposition lawmakers and their supporters blocked the capital’s main streets for hours Tuesday accusing the government of corruption and demanding it be replaced by a technocratic caretaker Cabinet until 2025 parliamentary elections. Hundreds of activists blocked traffic at Tirana’s main intersections accusing the Socialist Party of Prime Minister Edi Rama of corruption, manipulating earlier elections and usurping the powers of the judiciary. Led by lawmakers, opposition supporters — some coming from other cities — were involved in sporadic clashes with anti-riot police trying to clear the streets. Others sat down in the street or tried to push police officers away. “Rama go away,” was a call repeated by protesters in many places. They used water guns mounted on trucks to keep protesters away from City Hall and Wilson Square, and tear gas in at least in one case. The conservative Democratic Party and its supporters in an opposition coalition also have been holding protests over the arrests of their leader Sali Berisha and former President Ilir Meta in separate corruption cases , saying the charges are politically motivated. “The Albanians’ revolt and civil disobedience cannot be stopped,” said the Democrats’ Secretary-General Flamur Noka, the most senior leader while Berisha is under house arrest. As Noka was addressing journalists, he stopped speaking out of respect when a prayer was heard from the new Muslim mosque nearby. Albania’s 2.4 million population is more than half Muslim. They live peacefully alongside Catholic and Orthodox Christians and other smaller religious communities. The protest ended after three hours with the opposition leaders pledging to continue with rallies all around the country. Related Articles Albania holds parliamentary elections next spring, which Rama’s Socialists are poised to win, according to polls, partly because the opposition is divided. The United States and the European Union have urged the opposition to resume dialogue with the government, saying violence won’t help the country integrate into the 27-nation European Union. In October, Tirana started discussions with the bloc on how the country aligns with EU stances on the rule of law, the functioning of democratic institutions and the fight against corruption. Albania aims to join the bloc by 2030, according to Rama.
