President Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, delivered a speech at the meeting celebrating the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to China and the inaugural ceremony of the sixth-term government of the Macao SAR at the Macao East Asian Games Dome on Friday morning. Macao has undergone earthshaking transformation, and its international standing has increased significantly over the past 25 years since its return to the motherland, Xi said in the speech. In 2023, Macao's GDP climbed to seven times the figure of 1999. Its per capita GDP now ranks among the world's highest. Macao is also one of the safest places globally. Education is free from kindergarten to senior high, and the average life expectancy in the region has risen to 83.1 years. Sam Hou Fai, the sixth-term chief executive of the Macao SAR, who was inaugurated on Friday, said over the past 25 years since Macao's return to the motherland, Macao has witnessed the most rapid economic growth and the most significant improvement in people's livelihoods in its history. It has been fully proven that the great motherland always has a strong backing for Macao's long-term prosperity and stability, said Sam. "We are confident that with the strong support of President Xi Jinping and the central government, along with the united efforts of all residents, we will undoubtedly achieve even greater and more remarkable success in the implementation of 'One Country, Two Systems,'" he said. In his speech on Friday, President Xi said "One Country, Two Systems" is a good policy that helps maintain long-term prosperity and stability in Hong Kong and Macao, serves the noble cause of building a stronger country and achieving national rejuvenation, and promotes peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation between different social systems. He urged the new government of the Macao SAR to better leverage the institutional advantages of "One Country, Two Systems" and open up new prospects for the cause's high-quality development. Lau Pun Lap, president of the Macau Economic Association, said it is by staying committed to the fundamental policy of "One Country" and fully delivering the benefits of "Two Systems" that Macao has gained a continuous driving force for its progress. "'One Country' is fundamental. Without this foundation, 'Two Systems' would not exist," said Lau. Only by adhering to the principle of "One Country" can the advantages of "Two Systems" become more apparent, allowing Macao to access boundless development opportunities, he added. President Xi, in Friday's speech, also called on young people in Macao to assume the role of builders and successors of the cause of "One Country, Two Systems." "The young people are the hope and future of Macao," he said, adding that he met many outstanding young people during his three-day stay in Macao, including government workers, entrepreneurs and teachers. Sun Zhaolong, a researcher at the Macau Institute of Space Technology and Application under Macau University of Science and Technology, said President Xi would always come to Macao and visit schools and universities to engage with young people on the big anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland, like what he has done in 2014, 2019 and this year. "The times are changing quickly with many emerging industries. This era requires the new generation of youth to work hard," Sun told CGTN. Sun said he will continue to contribute to aerospace development, as a participant in the Macao Science-1 satellites program, the first space science satellite program jointly developed by the Chinese mainland and Macao. Luís Gomes, president of the Sports Bureau of the Macao SAR government, said he is confident in fulfilling the mission of being the builders and successors of the cause of "One Country, Two Systems." In the future, the Macao SAR will depend on the motherland, establish itself within the Greater Bay Area and connect with the world, contributing to Chinese modernization with its unique strengths, said Gomes.₹92cr released for SC scholarship scheme
Supporters and members of Melbourne’s large Jewish population have gathered for a vigil at the site of a burnt out synagogue. The ultra-Orthodox temple was firebombed and significantly damaged about 4am on Friday by what police suspect was a trio of young men or possibly teenagers. Two worshippers were in the temple at the time; there were no major injuries but a Jewish man who fled when a window was smashed burnt his hand on a door. Millions of dollars of holy texts, handwritten Torah scrolls, artefacts and furniture were destroyed or badly damaged. About 300 people attended a vigil near the synagogue which was firebombed on Friday. Picture: NewsWire / Andrew Henshaw Flowers and messages of support have been laid at the site in the days since the attack, and on Sunday morning a vigil was held. About 300 hundred people gathered in a park near the synagogue, with many people draped in Israel flags and many others wearing traditional clothing signifying their Judaism. Attending media report a relatively high spirit among the crowd - given the circumstances -including singing and chanting. Well wishers continue to put flowers and messages of support on fencing encircling the temple. Picture: NewsWire / Andrew Henshaw Former federal Liberal Party deputy leader Josh Frydenberg was in attendance but did not speak to the crowd. Local federal Labor MP Josh Burns took to the stage and received some jeers, but was defended state Liberal MP David Southwick. After the 45-minute gathering, people continued to place flowers on the temporary fencing surrounding the badly burnt temple. In the wake of the attack on Friday, the Prime Minister said the “shocking” and “un-Australian” incident “should be unequivocally condemned”. “To attack a synagogue is an attack of anti-Semitism. It’s attacking the right that all Australians should have to practice their faith in peace and security,” the Prime Minister said. Premier Jacinta Allan went to the synagogue on Friday and committed $100,000 to rebuilding, plus an increased police. However she cut her press conference short after being accused of not keeping Jewish Victorians safe by a member of the public. Picture: NewsWire / David Caird The presence of Labor MP Josh Burns was not appreciated by some in attendance on Saturday. Picture: NewsWire / Andrew Henshaw Despite the condemnation, Anthony Albanese was criticised by current and former political opponents for not calling the attack a terrorist act. On Sunday he labelled the firebombing as an act of terrorism. “If you want my personal view, quite clearly terrorism is something that is aimed at creating fear in the community and the atrocities that occurred at the synagogue in Melbourne clearly were designed to create fear in the community,” Mr Albanese told reporters. “And therefore, from my personal perspective, certainly fulfils that definition of terrorism.” ASIO and Victorian anti-terrorism police are investigating and have not yet ruled the attack as a terrorist incident. Victorian and federal police forces will meet on Monday to officially determine whether the arson attack was an act of terror. The firebombing happened at the Adass Israel Synagogue in Ripponlea, in Melbourne’s southeast. A rusty unspent bullet was found after the attack, outside the synagogue on Saturday. Picture: NewsWire / Diego Fedele Ripponlea and the surrounding suburbs have a high concentration of Jewish Australians. The Adass Israel Synagogue is home to members of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community and is one of the busiest Jewish temples in the country. The male members of this sect are recognisable by their white collared shirts, long black coats, broadbrimmed black hats and circular fur hats - the latter called shtreimel. Melbourne’s Adass Israel community traces its origins to Holocaust survivors from countries such as Hungary and Czechoslovakia. The Adass’ are known to be particularly insular and highly observant of Jewish religious law. Democrat wins final House seat, setting up narrower GOP edgeNEW YORK (AP) — Brian Thompson led one of the biggest health insurers in the U.S. but was unknown to millions of the people his decisions affected. Then Wednesday's fatal shooting of the UnitedHealthcare CEO in a targeted killing on a midtown Manhattan sidewalk thrust the executive and his business into the national spotlight. Thompson, who was 50, ran the insurance arm of the giant UnitedHealth Group Inc. since 2021 and had worked at the company for 20 years. He previously led its Medicare and retirement businesses. As CEO, Thompson led a business that provides health coverage to more than 49 million Americans — more than the population of Spain. United is the largest provider of Medicare Advantage plans, the privately run versions of the U.S. government’s Medicare program for people age 65 and older. The company also sells individual insurance and administers health-insurance coverage for thousands of employers and state-and federally funded Medicaid programs. The business run by Thompson brought in $281 billion in revenue last year, making it the largest subsidiary of the Minnetonka, Minnesota-based UnitedHealth Group. His $10.2 million annual pay package, including salary, bonus and stock options awards, made him one of the company's highest-paid executives. The University of Iowa graduate began his career as a certified public accountant at Pricewaterhouse Coopers and had little name recognition beyond the industry. Even to investors who own its stock, the parent company's face belonged to CEO Andrew Witty, a knighted British triathlete who has testified before Congress. Thompson’s few moments of public attention stood in contrast to his role in reshaping the way Americans get health care. At an investor meeting last year, he outlined his company's shift to “value-based care,” paying doctors and other caregivers to keep patients healthy, rather than focusing on treating them when they get sick. “Health care should be easier for people,” Thompson said at the time. “We are cognizant of the challenges. But navigating a future through value-based care unlocks a situation where the ... family doesn’t have to make the decisions on their own.” Thompson also drew attention in 2021 when the insurer, like its competitors, was widely criticized for a plan to start denying payment for what it deemed non-critical visits to hospital emergency rooms. “Patients are not medical experts and should not be expected to self-diagnose during what they believe is a medical emergency,” the chief executive of the American Hospital Association wrote in an open letter addressed to Thompson. “Threatening patients with a financial penalty for making the wrong decision could have a chilling effect on seeking emergency care.” United Healthcare responded by delaying rollout of the change. Thompson was scheduled to speak at an investor meeting when he was shot around 6:45 a.m. outside the New York Hilton Midtown by a masked assailant who fled on foot, the New York Police Department said. Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said investigators were looking at Thompson's social media accounts and interviewing employees and family members. He said Thompson walked out of the hotel alone. “Didn’t seem like he had any issues at all,” Kenny said. "He did not have a security detail.” AP reporter Michael R. Sisak contributed to this report. This story corrects the style of the company’s name to UnitedHealthcare.
On Wednesday, all three major U.S. stock indexes reached unprecedented closing highs, spurred by a surge in technology shares following impressive results from Salesforce. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's encouraging remarks also provided a late boost to market sentiment. Powell noted the economy's strength since September, citing progress on inflation, influencing market perceptions positively. The Fed's Beige Book report corroborated this optimism with slight economic growth in most regions since October. Investors now anticipate another interest rate cut at the Federal Reserve's meeting in mid-December. Salesforce's performance, achieving an all-time intraday high, helped lift other cloud companies and drive the S&P 500 technology index to record levels. Additionally, Marvell Technology and other chipmaker stocks surged on improved revenue forecasts, with investors closely watching upcoming U.S. employment data for further insight. LA Galaxy win record 6th MLS CupThe counting of votes for the 2024 Jharkhand Assembly elections begins on Saturday, and all eyes are on Jamtara, a key constituency in the Dumka region. The seat has historically seen intense competition, and this year’s contest is no different, with Congress incumbent Irfan Ansari aiming for a third consecutive term in the Assembly. Jamtara, part of the Dumka (ST) Parliamentary seat, saw a remarkable voter turnout of 77.29%, leading the state’s overall participation rate of 68.01%. The high voter engagement highlights the importance of this seat, which has been a stronghold for Congress, with Ansari securing victories in both the 2014 and 2019 elections. , the sitting MLA, is seeking re-election. He has proven popular in the region, winning decisive victories in the past two elections. In 2019, Ansari secured over 45% of the vote share, defeating BJP’s Birendra Mandal by a significant margin. Ansari’s leadership and local connect have made him a strong contender for a third term. is presenting a formidable challenge to Ansari. A former member of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Sita Soren joined the BJP after alleging lack of support from her former party. She is the daughter-in-law of former Chief Minister Shibu Soren and the wife of the late Durga Soren. Her political experience and family background make her a strong rival in this race. Other candidates, including Lakhan Lal Mandal (CPI(M)), Tarun Gupta (JLKM), Arif Ansari (BSP), and Baleshwar Mandal (NCP), are also in the fray but are expected to play a smaller role in the final outcome. Several key issues have dominated the campaign in Jamtara, influencing the election discourse. One of the primary concerns raised by BJP leaders is the alleged infiltration of Bangladeshi nationals in the region, which they claim has led to demographic changes. Sita Soren has been vocal in criticizing the Hemant Soren-led government for not addressing this issue effectively. Corruption allegations against the current JMM government have also been a major point of contention. The opposition has accused the state government of mismanaging welfare schemes, and the BJP has used these allegations to rally support for a change in leadership. Additionally, the monthly cash transfer scheme, introduced by the JMM government, has been a focal point of debate. The BJP has criticized the scheme as a political tool for gaining votes, while the JMM defends it as an essential measure to address economic distress. In the 2019 elections, Irfan Ansari emerged victorious with 112,829 votes, securing around 45.48% of the total vote share. His main rival, BJP’s Birendra Mandal, received 74,088 votes, while independent candidate Tarun Kumar Gupta garnered 6,219 votes. Ansari had also won the seat in 2014, defeating Birendra Mandal once again, with a margin of over 9,000 votes. The consistent electoral success has solidified his position as a key player in the region.
