(AP) — Oklahoma appears to have borrowed from the past to cure its recent offensive ills. The Sooners , best known this century for a passing prowess that has produced four Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks, took it back to the 20th century against then-No. 7 Alabama. Oklahoma ran 50 times for 257 yards while only throwing 12 times in a 24-3 win over the Crimson Tide that took coach Brent Venables off the hot seat. The Sooners more resembled Barry Switzer’s squads that dominated the old Big 8 with the wishbone offense in the 1970s and ’80s than the more recent Air Raid teams. Venables said the change was a matter of necessity for a unit that has been besieged by injuries at receiver and offensive line. “I think this staff has done a really good job with trying to figure that out, get better every week, put together a great gameplan but also figure out, ‘OK, what does this group of guys, what does this team — what do we need to do?’” Venables said. College basketball teams and fans look forward to this time of the year. The holiday week tournaments feature buzzworthy matchups and all-day TV coverage, sure, but there is a familiarity about them as they help ward off the November chill. For four decades, these sandy-beach getaways filled with basketball have become a beloved mainstay of the sport itself. “When you see (ESPN’s) ‘Feast Week’ of college basketball on TV, when you see the Battle 4 Atlantis on TV, you know college basketball is back,” said , the founder and organizer of the Battle 4 Atlantis men's and women's tournaments. “Because it’s a saturated time of the year with the NFL, college football and the NBA. But when you see these gorgeous events in these beautiful places, you realize, ‘Wow, hoops are back, let’s get excited.’” The Great Alaska Shootout was the trend-setting multiple-team event (MTE) nearly five decades ago. The brainchild of late Alaska-Anchorage coach Bob Rachal sought to raise his program’s profile by bringing in national-power programs, which could take advantage of NCAA rules allowing them to exceed the maximum allotment of regular-season games if they played the three-game tournament outside the contiguous 48 states. The first edition, named the Sea Wolf Classic, saw N.C. State beat Louisville 72-66 for the title on Nov. 26, 1978. The Maui Invitational followed in November 1984, borne from the buzz of NAIA program Chaminade’s shocking upset of top-ranked Virginia and 7-foot-4 star Ralph Sampson in Hawaii two years earlier. Some events have faded away like the Puerto Rico Tipoff and the Great Alaska Shootout, amid event competition and schools opting for warm-weather locales. Miller-Tooley’s push to build an MTE for Atlantis began as a December 2010 doubleheader with Georgia Tech beating Richmond and Virginia Tech beating Mississippi State in a prove-it moment for a tournament’s viability. It also required changing NCAA legislation to permit MTEs in the Bahamas. Approval came in March 2011; the first eight-team Atlantis men’s tournament followed in November. That tournament quickly earned marquee status with big-name fields, with Atlantis champions and later winning that season’s NCAA title. Games run in at the resort, where players also check out massive swimming pools, and surrounded by palm trees and the Atlantic Ocean. “It’s just the value of getting your passport stamped, that will never get old,” Miller-Tooley said. “Watching some of these kids, this may be their first and last time — and staff and families — that they ever travel outside the United States. ... You can see through these kids’ eyes that it’s really an unbelievable experience.” ACC Network analyst Luke Hancock knows that firsthand. His Louisville team finished second at Atlantis in 2012 and won that year’s later-vacated NCAA title, with Hancock as the Final Four's most outstanding player. “I remember (then-coach Rick Pitino) saying something to the effect of: ‘Some of you guys might never get this opportunity again. We’re staying in this unbelievable place, you’re doing it with people you love,’” Hancock said. “It was a business trip for us there at Thanksgiving, but he definitely had a tone of ‘We’ve got to enjoy this as well.’” Maui offers similar vibes, though 2024 could be a little different as Lahaina recovers that forced the event's relocation last year. North Carolina assistant coach Sean May played for the Tar Heels’ Maui winner in 2004 and was part of UNC’s staff for the 2016 champion, with both teams later winning the NCAA title. May said “you just feel the peacefulness” of the area — even while focusing on games — and savors memories of the team taking a boat out on the Pacific Ocean after title runs under now-retired Hall of Famer Roy Williams. “Teams like us, Dukes, UConns – you want to go to places that are very well-run,” May said. “Maui, Lea Miller with her group at the Battle 4 Atlantis, that’s what drives teams to come back because you know you’re going to get standard A-quality of not only the preparation but the tournament with the way it’s run. Everything is top-notch. And I think that brings guys back year after year.” That’s why Colorado coach Tad Boyle is so excited for the Buffaloes’ first Maui appearance since 2009. “We’ve been trying to get in the tournament since I got here,” said Boyle, now in his 15th season. And of course, that warm-weather setting sure doesn’t hurt. “If you talk about the Marquettes of the world, St. John’s, Providence — they don’t want that cold weather,” said NBA and college TV analyst Terrence Oglesby, who played for Clemson in the 2007 San Juan Invitational in Puerto Rico. “They’re going to have to deal with that all January and February. You might as well get a taste of what the sun feels like.” The men’s Baha Mar Championship in Nassau, Bahamas, got things rolling last week with for the title. As Toronto continues its ‘Love Story’ with Taylor Swift and the Eras Tour, set to head next week to British Columbia, some are urging action over allegations of price-gouging by resellers and ticketing practices that have left some fans with ‘Bad Blood.’ On sites like StubHub, a single ticket for Taylor Swift’s Friday concert in Toronto is at minimum $4,654, while on SeatGeek it’s $4,500 for the 500-level seats. Some have been priced as high as $33,000. That’s not including Ticketmaster where you need a fan code to get one of the tickets made recently available for the same-day show. But those prices are why politicians like NDP MP Brian Masse are calling for action by governments to prevent future concert-goers from facing sky-high prices. “Going to a concert or an event is sometimes a special moment for family and friends and people even save for months to be able to go and then to have it ripped from your ability to get there because of this type of structure is just not fair,” Masse said in an interview. A petition has also been launched federally this week , backed by Green MP Mike Morris, calling on the federal government to examine other countries’ related legislation around banning ticket resales above face-value and a cap on how high they can be resold. That petition calls for a “reasonable package of measures” to decrease the volume of listings of tickets being resold for profit, while regulating market practices such as the use of “deceptive websites and speculative ticket listings.” It’s not just Taylor Swift tickets being resold or restricted, either. Allegations of restricted access or price gouging by either the various ticketing companies or resellers has been a common practice for years, with tickets for music concerts, comedy shows and sports games skyrocketing. A big issue in Canada, according to business and law associate professor Daniel Tsai, is that Ticketmaster and its parent company LiveNation “control” the primary market for ticket sales, while also having some control over the resale market as well. “There is lack of regulations and no competition that’s allowed one big dominant force, LiveNation Ticketmaster, to control the concert and entertainment and sporting ticket industry,” Tsai said. He added surge pricing, when tickets go in high demand, means Canadians and other buyers are left “paying a fortune” either for the original tickets or on the resale market. In a letter to Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne, Masse called on the federal government to launch an investigation into Ticketmaster and the ticketing industry and take “immediate action” to crack down on scalper bots and resellers by working with the provinces and territories to ensure a “universal” change. Among the changes he’d like to see would be limited resale capabilities for special events, and a limited markup on tickets controlled similar to what’s seen in other countries. According to the Face-Value European Alliance for Ticketing, which advocates for tickets to be resold for no more than their original price, places like Portugal and Denmark have made it illegal for tickets to be sold above face-value. An unauthorized resell of a ticket in France, if not done through the promoter or authorized ticket platforms, can lead to a fine of up to EUR15,000. Masse said work should be done with provinces to determine a standard number, but he would prefer to see those reselling tickets limited to no more than five per cent above the original price. Global News reached out to Champagne’s office for comment on the letter as well as if the federal government is planning actions on ticket price gouging, but did not hear back by publication. It’s not just at the federal level, either. Ontario NDP MPP Krystyn Wong-Tam has introduced a motion calling on the provincial government to consult with stakeholders and investigate to create a system to end price gouging. “Fans are paying the price for Ontario government inaction on ticket resale racket,” Wong-Tam said. Ontario tried to put in place a resale price cap of no more than 50 per cent above face value in 2017, however it was paused after Premier Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservatives came to power. The federal government in its 2024 Budget said it would work with provinces and territories and encourage the adoption of best practice requirements for ticket sales, including transparency around unexpected charges and cracking down on “reseller practices which unfairly drive up prices,” such as through bot technology. Tsai says more needs to be done, suggesting the Competition Bureau of Canada should order a breakup of LiveNation Ticketmaster to allow for competition in the market. The arbitrary enforcement of laws, the risk of wrongful detention, and limited healthcare availability should prompt travelers to rethink their plans. “In the past year, the government of Nicaragua has subjected U.S. citizens to arbitrary entry and exit bans, expulsions, arrests, revocations of Nicaraguan citizenship, and other actions,” the State Department said in its advisory. Among those targeted by the government are workers for non-governmental organizations, academics and students, business representatives, civil society leaders, religious and charity workers (including foreign missionaries), and journalists. “Since 2018, the Government of Nicaragua has closed more than 5,300 civil society organizations, including religious organizations,” the State Department advisory stated. “Nicaraguan security services have arrested U.S. citizens on false charges. This includes dual U.S.-Nicaraguan citizens. Those arrested can be denied fair and transparent treatment. “Convictions routinely occur in non-public trials without adequate defense or credible evidence,” the advisory states. “Nicaraguan authorities also arbitrarily enforce laws against U.S. citizen religious workers.” U.S. citizens arrested by Nicaraguan authorities may face detention for long periods without charges, particularly for politically motivated arrests and for property disputes, the U.S. government said. When cases do go to trial, the judicial processes often lacks transparency. Prison conditions can be harsh and life-threatening. The only private hospital in the country that is accredited and certified by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations is in the capital of Managua. It has labs and radiology services available but has a very limited number of specialists for acute emergencies. Medical services outside Managua are limited, including for victims of crime. Poor infrastructure can limit the U.S. Embassy’s ability to provide emergency assistance to U.S. citizens, the advisory said. Travelers who do visit Nicaragua should be on guard for the risks of crime, including violent crimes such as sexual assault and armed robbery.

Srinagar, Nov 24: As part of the World Heritage Week celebrations in Kashmir, INTACH’s Kashmir Chapter organised a study tour and heritage walk at Burzhom archaeological site for students from Government School Malbagh and Kashani Memorial Public School. The event aimed to delve into the prehistoric heritage of the region, with a focus on Burzhom, a nationally protected site that holds tentative World Heritage status under UNESCO. The Burzhom site is of immense historical significance, as UNESCO highlights its role in transferring agricultural practices from Central Asia to the Gangetic plains of North India. It also provides a glimpse into the Neolithic period, showcasing the evolution of early human life in Kashmir. This era, dating back to 3000 BCE and extending into a second phase around 1500 BCE, marks the transition of humans in Kashmir to cultivators and domesticators of animals. The site features evidence of early pit dwellings, cultivation, and animal domestication—the first of its kind in Kashmir’s history. During the event, students explored the essential aspects of Neolithic life and its contributions to agriculture, livelihoods, and early technologies. They participated in an engaging lecture-demonstration led by Saleem Beg, convener of INTACH Kashmir Chapter. His insightful interaction made the history of Burzhom accessible and relatable, simplifying complex archaeological and cultural concepts for the young audience. Group discussions led by teachers and INTACH experts further deepened the students’ understanding of the site’s material heritage, including excavated artifacts such as pottery and metal tools. These discussions shed light on the technologies and skills that shaped prehistoric Kashmir. The event’s success was largely attributed to the collaborative efforts of teachers, including Urfana Amin and Sheema, who guided the students throughout the walk. “Their dedication enriched the learning experience and ensured the event was both educational and enjoyable,” the organisers said Altaf Hussain, co-convener of INTACH Kashmir, extended his gratitude to the principals of Government High School Malbagh and Kashani Memorial Public School Burzhom for their support in making the event a success. World Heritage Week at Burzhom proved to be a meaningful exercise, fostering a deeper connection among students to their region’s rich cultural and historical legacy.
