On Jan. 2, Jack Foley will pack up his things and head to the Palouse to begin his college football career. Last week, the Mountain View wide receiver signed his letter of intent to play at Washington State while putting an end to a turbulent seven months of wondering what his football career would look like. “It was a blessing,” Foley said. “To finally be able to sign it, completely close off my recruitment and be so 100% sure that I want to go somewhere and be part of a program. “It was an interesting year, interesting season and offseason,” Foley added. “But the Lord has blessed me with some abilities to play this game and I trusted his process and it all worked out.” Foley, who played for Mountain View while attending Trinity Lutheran in Bend, will graduate early to jumpstart his college career. He boasts one of the best careers on the gridiron in Mountain View history as a two-time Class 5A first-team all-state wide receiver. This past fall, he finished with 1,082 yards on 52 receptions while scoring 16 touchdowns for a Cougar team that went undefeated during the regular season, won the Intermountain Conference and reached the 5A title game for the second-consecutive year. After a junior season in which he caught 38 passes and scored 14 touchdowns, Foley became one of the top receiver prospects in the Northwest and was destined to play big-time college football. But this past May, Foley fractured his spine while at a recruiting camp. Four surgeons in Bend told him that continuing his football career was not safe. His recruitment cooled after that. The college coaches that were trying to convince him to join their programs began reaching out to wish him luck with his recovery and to let them know if anything changed. “It was unfortunate but it’s a business,” Foley said. “These coaches and programs put in a lot of time and effort into a kid, and for them not to be able to play football in the future, it is a difficult decision for a coach. It was challenging. It was a test of my faith as well. I just trust the Lord’s plan that he had for me and it all ended up working out.” After getting the OK from doctors in Los Angeles and going through a rehabilitation process, Foley was back on the field for his final season. He started posting his highlights from the season on social media and began reaching back out to coaches to let them know that he was back. A couple games into the season, the recruiting process began to pick up again. For a brief time, Foley was committed to play in the ACC at Wake Forest. But once Washington State offered him a scholarship, he could not turn down the chance to play for a competitive team in a pass-happy offense while being closer to his family. “I think they are building something special and I want to be a part of it,” Foley said of WSU. “I have an amazing support system from family, friends, girlfriend, teammates. Being only eight hours away and having those guys be able to support me closer to home, make it easier for my family to come to games, played a big part in it.” Between the 5A and 4A classifications, 10 additional Central Oregon players landed on the state’s first and second teams. Mountain View junior Cody Calvert was a two-way all-stater, named to the first team as both an offensive and defensive lineman. Junior running back Angel Valenzuela and senior wideout Jordan Best landed on the 5A second team. Summit had a pair of first-teamers, with junior Max Shepherd selected as 5A’s top kicker. Senior Marco Larsen was a first-team linebacker and second-team offensive lineman. Senior defensive lineman Alex Nevarov and senior defensive back Culter Hobin landed on the second-team defense for the Storm. Crook County had three players named to the 4A all-state teams. Senior Garrett Stefanek was a first-team linebacker and second-team offensive lineman. Senior Gabe Love was a first-team punter and a second-team kicker. A rival south Wales to London rail service to First Great Western has a new operator. Grand Union Trains, which secured approval to run an open access service from Carmarthen to London Paddington from the Office of Rail and Road two years ago, has sold the new route to transport giant FirstGroup. The daily service is expected to launch in 2027. It follows on from Grand Union’s also selling its open access rights for a new Stirling to Euston (London) train service to FirstGroup in September. That service is scheduled to start next May. The value of the south Wales to Paddington 10-year licence deal has not been disclosed. However, it is understood that Grand Union had explored striking a deal with the Welsh Government ’s transport body, Transport for Wales. TfW, which operates services on the Wales & Borders network. The strong projected passenger numbers between south Wales and London, including higher paying first class commuting customers, could have reduced the level of rail operating public subsidy TfW receives from the Welsh Government. FirstGroup will keep to Grand Union’s aim of launching the service in December 2027. It will confirm an order for new rolling stock in due course. Grand Union were looking to secure a leasing deal of around £110m, financed over 10 years, for four five-car trains built by Hitachi. Grand Union had planned for five trains a day in both directions from Carmarthen to Paddington, stopping at Llanelli , Gowerton, Cardiff Central, Newport , Severn Tunnel and Bristol Parkway. They also planned was to add a stop at Cardiff Parkway, if the proposed mainline train station on the outskirts of the capital at St Mellons is realised. The Welsh Government is still “actively considering” the project for planning with its integrated 900,000 sq ft business park. According to data reported by the scheme's beneficiaries, an investment of Rs 8,910 crore has been made across 213 locations in the country, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries said in a statement. The PLI scheme for Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI) was approved by the Union Cabinet on March 31, 2021 with a budget of Rs 10,900 crore, to be implemented from 2021-22 to 2026-27. About 171 applicants have been enrolled under the scheme, informed the ministry. The beneficiary selection process under PLISFPI was conducted as a one-time exercise, preceded by active stakeholder engagement and extensive publicity to ensure broad participation. The Centre actively supports small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the food processing sector via schemes like Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY), PLISFPI, and the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme. These schemes provide financial, technical, and marketing support to SMEs, facilitating capacity expansion, innovation, and formalisation, the ministry said. Under the PLI scheme, a significant proportion of beneficiaries are MSMEs, with 70 MSMEs directly enrolled and 40 others contributing as contract manufacturers for larger companies. Under the scheme, beneficiaries are reimbursed 50 per cent of their expenditure on branding and marketing abroad, capped at 3 per cent of their annual food product sales or Rs 50 crore per year, whichever is lower. Applicants are required to spend a minimum of Rs 5 crore over five years to qualify. Currently, there are 73 beneficiaries under this component of the PLI scheme, according to the ministry. Thousands of Afghans on Thursday attended the funeral of the refugees minister, AFP journalists saw, after he was killed in a suicide bombing in Kabul the day before in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group. The Minister for Refugees and Repatriation, Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani, was killed on Wednesday afternoon in a suicide bombing at the ministry's offices in the Afghan capital. Thousands of men, many of them armed, gathered for Haqqani's funeral in his home village of Sarana, in a mountainous area of Paktia province, south of Kabul. The funeral included heavy security, with armoured vehicles, snipers and personnel manning the area and the road from Kabul, which was jammed with hundreds of cars as mourners travelled from surrounding provinces. Senior Taliban officials, including the Chief of Army Staff Qari Fasihuddin Fitrat, and Maulawi Abdul Kabir, political deputy of the prime minister's office, attended the funeral, according to an AFP team on site. The deceased's nephew, the powerful interior minister, Sirajuddin Haqqani, also attended, along with foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. In a speech there, Muttaqi said the latest IS attacks had been planned "abroad", denouncing, without naming them, "countries harbouring" the organisation. "We call on all nations to work together to stop the common enemy, which does not recognise any kind of morality." In September, the Taliban authorities said IS had training camps in Balochistan province of Pakistan, which also regularly faces jihadist attacks. Haqqani, the highest ranked member of the Taliban government to be killed in an attack since their return to power, "was a big loss for us, the system and the nation", said Paktia resident Hedayatullah, 22. "May God protect our other leaders and keep them victorious." "Our leader... who had his life brutally taken away, achieved martyrdom," said Bostan, 53, haranguing the "cowardly attack" that killed Haqqani. The United Nations mission in Afghanistan condemned the attack on Thursday, offering condolences to the victims' families. "There can be no place for terrorism in the quest for stability," the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said on X. The European Union and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation also condemned the attack, along with Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Iran. Haqqani -- who is on US and UN sanctions lists and never appeared without an automatic weapon in his hand -- was the brother of Jalaluddin Haqqani, founder of the feared Haqqani network responsible for some of the most violent attacks during the Taliban's two-decade insurgency. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack, saying a bomber detonated an explosive vest inside the ministry, according to a statement on its Amaq news agency, as translated by the SITE Intelligence Group. Taliban authorities had already blamed IS for the "cowardly attack" -- the first targeting a minister since the Taliban returned to power in 2021. Violence has waned in Afghanistan since the Taliban forces took over the country that year, ending their war against US-led NATO coalition forces. Christmas came early for thousands of people on Sunday as The Ottawa Mission served up its annual holiday meal. "I know what it's like not to be able to have Christmas dinner and the idea that we here at the Ottawa Mission can make that happen for so many people, it makes it so special," said chef Ric Allen-Watson. It's a meal many look forward to each year as the need continues to grow, with more than 17,000 meals being served this year. "It's amazing that there's so much giving here, and I am really grateful to be here," said client Steve Kildare. It's a huge feat accomplished by dozens of volunteers and includes more than 800 turkeys, 3,000 pounds of potatoes, 2,000 pounds of vegetables and 150 gallons of gravy. "The cooking started when we got here at 4 a.m. but we cook the turkeys, debone them and cook them ahead of time, pack them and freeze them and pull them out and slice them," Allen-Watson said. The event brings a sense of community and gratitude this time of year. Last year, the Mission served more than 17,400 meals, a record at the time. "It's all about being together and the joy of Christmas and just supporting the Mission and the Mission supporting us," said Gerald Thornton.
