lol646c Article content DALLAS (AP) — Juan Soto gets free use of a luxury suite and up to four premium tickets behind home plate for regular-season and postseason New York Mets home games as part of his record $765 million, 15-year contract that was finalized Wednesday. Recommended Videos The Mets also agreed to provide personal team security for the All-Star outfielder and his family at the team’s expense for all spring training and regular-season home and road games, according to details of the agreement obtained by The Associated Press. Major League Baseball teams usually provide security for player families in seating areas at ballparks. New York also agreed to assist Soto’s family for in-season travel arrangements, guaranteed Soto will have uniform No. 22 and included eight types of award bonuses. Soto’s suite will be valued at the Mets’ prevailing prices, presumably for tax purposes, and after 2025 he can by each Jan. 15 modify or give up his suite selection for the upcoming season. He can request the premium tickets, to be used by family members, no later than 72 hours before the scheduled game time. The Yankees had refused to offer Soto a free suite. “Some high-end players that make a lot of money for us, if they want suites they buy them ... whether it’s CC (Sabathia), whether it’s (Aaron) Judge, whether it’s (Gerrit) Cole, whether it’s any of these guys,” general manager Brian Cashman said. “We’ve gone through a process on previous negotiations where asks might have happened and this is what we did and we’re going to honor those, so no regrets there.” Cashman said the Yankees have a shared suite for player families and a family room with babysitting. Soto gets a $75 million signing bonus, payable within 60 days of the agreement’s approval by the commissioner’s office. The deal for the 26-year-old, which tops Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million, 10-year contract with the Dodgers, was reached Sunday pending a physical that took place Tuesday. Soto receives salaries of $46,875,000 each in 2025 and 2026, $42.5 million in 2027, $46,875,000 apiece in 2028 and 2029 and $46 million in each of the final 10 seasons. Soto has a contingent right to opt out of the agreement within three days of the end of the 2029 World Series to become a free agent again, but the Mets have the an option to negate the opt-out provision by increasing the yearly salaries for 2030-39 by $4 million annually to $50 million and raising the total value to $805 million. If the club exercises its option to negate the opt-out provision, Soto can make his opt-out decision by the fifth day after the World Series. He has a full no-trade provision and gets a hotel suite on road trips. Soto would receive a $500,000 bonus for winning his first Most Valuable Player award and $1 million for each MVP award. He would get $350,000 for finishing second in the voting and $150,000 for finishing third through fifth. Soto was third in the AL voting this year. He would earn $100,000 for each All-Star selection and Gold Glove, $350,000 for World Series MVP and $150,000 for League Championship Series MVP. Soto would get $100,000 for selection to the All-MLB first or second team, $150,000 for Silver Slugger and $100,000 for the Hank Aaron Award. (AP) — A Delaware judge has reaffirmed her ruling that Tesla must revoke Elon Musk’s multibillion-dollar pay package Chancellor Kathaleen St. Jude McCormick on Monday denied a request by attorneys for Musk and Tesla’s corporate directors to vacate her ruling earlier this year requiring the company to rescind the unprecedented pay package. McCormick also rejected an equally unprecedented and massive fee request by plaintiff attorneys , who argued that they were entitled to legal fees in the form of Tesla stock valued at more than $5 billion. The judge said the attorneys were entitled to a fee award of $345 million. The rulings came in a lawsuit filed by a Tesla stockholder who challenged Musk’s 2018 compensation package. McCormick concluded in January that Musk engineered the landmark pay package in sham negotiations with directors who were not independent. The compensation package initially carried a potential maximum value of about $56 billion, but that sum has fluctuated over the years based on Tesla’s stock price. Following the court ruling, Tesla shareholders met in June and ratified Musk’s 2018 pay package for a second time, again by an overwhelming margin. Defense attorneys then argued that the second vote makes clear that Tesla shareholders, with full knowledge of the flaws in the 2018 process that McCormick pointed out, were adamant that Musk is entitled to the pay package. They asked the judge to vacate her order directing Tesla to rescind the pay package. McCormick, who seemed skeptical of the defense arguments during an August hearing, said in Monday’s ruling that those arguments were fatally flawed. “The large and talented group of defense firms got creative with the ratification argument, but their unprecedented theories go against multiple strains of settled law,” McCormick wrote in a 103-page opinion. The judge noted, among other things, that a stockholder vote standing alone cannot ratify a conflicted-controller transaction. “Even if a stockholder vote could have a ratifying effect, it could not do so here due to multiple, material misstatements in the proxy statement,” she added. Meanwhile, McCormick found that the $5.6 billion fee request by the shareholder’s attorneys, which at one time approached $7 billion based on Tesla’s trading price, went too far. “In a case about excessive compensation, that was a bold ask,” McCormick wrote. Attorneys for the Tesla shareholder argue that their work resulted in the “massive” benefit of returning shares to Tesla that otherwise would have gone to Musk and diluted the stock held by other Tesla investors. They value that benefit at $51.4 billion, using the difference between the stock price at the time of McCormick’s January ruling and the strike price of some 304 million stock options granted to Musk. While finding that the methodology used to calculate the fee request was sound, the judge noted that the Delaware’s Supreme Court has noted that fee award guidelines “must yield to the greater policy concern of preventing windfalls to counsel.” “The fee award here must yield in this way, because $5.6 billion is a windfall no matter the methodology used to justify it,” McCormick wrote. A fee award of $345 million, she said, was “an appropriate sum to reward a total victory.” The fee award amounts to almost exactly half the current record $688 million in legal fees awarded in 2008 in litigation stemming from the collapse of Enron.

Artificial intelligence. Abortion. Guns. Marijuana. Minimum wages. Name a hot topic, and chances are good there's a new law about it taking effect in 2025 in one state or another. Many of the laws launching in January are a result of legislation passed this year. Others stem from ballot measures approved by voters. Some face legal challenges. Parents who profit from social media posts featuring their children will be required to set aside some earnings for their young influencers. A Florida law bans children under 14 from having social media accounts and requires parental consent for ages 14 and 15. But enforcement is being delayed because of a lawsuit filed by two associations for online companies, with a hearing scheduled for late February. A new Tennessee law also requires parental consent for minors to open accounts on social media. NetChoice, an industry group for online businesses, is challenging the law. Another new state law requires porn websites to verify that visitors are at least 18 years old. But the Free Speech Coalition, a trade association for the adult entertainment industry, has filed a challenge. Several new California measures aimed at combating political deepfakes are also being challenged, including one requiring large social media platforms to remove deceptive content related to elections and another allowing any individual to sue for damages over the use of AI to create fabricated images or videos in political ads. Nearly four-fifths of U.S. states have now legalized medical marijuana. Minimum wage workers in more than 20 states are due to receive raises in January. The highest minimum wages will be in Washington, California and Connecticut, all of which will top $16 an hour after modest increases. The largest increases are scheduled in Delaware, where the minimum wage will rise by $1.75 to $15 an hour, and in Nebraska, where a ballot measure approved by voters in 2022 will add $1.50 to the current minimum of $12 an hour. While the measure worked its way through the legislature, multiple transportation officials said drug use on buses and trains, and at transit stops and stations, was making passengers and drivers feel less safe. In Missouri, law enforcement officers have spent the past 16 months issuing warnings to motorists that handheld cellphone use is illegal. Starting with the new year, penalties will kick in: a $150 fine for the first violation, progressing to $500 for third and subsequent offenses and up to 15 years imprisonment if a driver using a cellphone cause an injury or death. But police must notice a primary violation, such as speeding or weaving across lanes, to cite motorists for violating the cellphone law. Montana is the only state that hasn't banned texting while driving, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. While a victory for renters, the new law is a financial loss for governments. An analysis by Arizona's nonpartisan Joint Legislative Budget Committee estimated that $230 million would be lost in municipal tax revenue during the first full fiscal year of implementation. Meanwhile Alabama will offer tax credits to businesses that help employees with child care costs. Kansas is eliminating its 2% sales tax on groceries. NGE has everything you'd want from a mech anime: big monsters to defeat, huge mechs, and intense storytelling. You'll want to steel yourself before strapping into Eva, because it certainly goes to some wild and uncomfortable places, especially in the movies, but it's well worth a watch for any anime fan. Kotaro Lives Alone Kotaro Lives Alone is an absolutely heart wrenching anime series that follows four-year-old Kotaro, a strange young boy who moves into an apartment by himself next to an overworked manga artist. We won't spoil how or why Kotaro lives alone – that's better left experienced yourself – but watch this one with a friend or a loved one. It's a beautiful series, but one that will leave you in tears at times. Little Witch Academia Ah Studio Trigger, is there anything you can't do? Little Witch Academia is a series about a young girl named Atsuko who enrolls at a magical academy but isn't particularly great at magic. Beastars Beastars has it all: drama, fantasy, 8-foot-tall anthropomorphized wolf-men. This is a series dripping with metaphor, wild storytelling, and some really great character work. Pokémon Journeys You already know what Pokémon is, so let's cut to the chase: Pokémon Journeys is Ash Ketchum's final journey through the Pokémon world. It's an exciting and touching end to a character that graced our screens for 25 years, and it's a must-watch for any Pokémon fan. Komi Can't Communicate Komi is a high school girl who's apparently one of the most beautiful girls most people have ever seen. When she starts at an elite school, everyone wants to know her... but despite wanting to know them too, she suffers from severe social anxiety that makes it almost impossible for her to talk to anyone outside of her family. Over the course of the series she learns to overcome her anxiety and start to make friends, have conversations, and get emotionally invested in her classmates. It's a lovely story with some top-notch character writing, and worth watching for anyone who struggles to be around other people sometimes. Aggretsuko In this Sanrio series, Retsuko – a 25-year-old red panda – is faced with the frustrations of everyday life as she works through a pencil-pushing job that drives her batty. To let out her frustrations, Retsuko visits a karaoke bar to sing death metal, which is incredible imagery that always delivers. Aggretsuko starts strong and keeps getting stronger with each episode and is filled with moments and storylines that will make you think "damn, same girl." Carole and Tuesday Shinichiro Watanabe is perhaps best known for his work directing Cowboy Bebop, but Carole & Tuesday shows just how much range he has as a director. In the near future on a terraformed Mars, a young girl named Tuesday runs away from her wealthy family to pursue her dream of becoming a musician. She has a chance encounter with orphaned refugee Carole, and the two join forces to make their music dreams a reality. This is a really touching series with some incredible music, and it's an absolute blast in both its Japanese and English dubs. Kimi ni Todoke Kimi ni Todoke sounds like a joke when you read its synopsis: a 15-year-old high school girl is hated by just about everyone because she looks like the creepy girl from The Ring, but manages to start a fledgling romance with the most popular boy in school. It sounds silly on its face, but that's just a trick to lure you in and gut-punch you with the most charming, wholesome story you'll ever see in an anime. Kimi ni Todoke also has a very good live-action adaptation on Netflix, so you're spoiled for choice when it comes to watching this series. Arcane Arcane isn't strictly an anime as most people in the West would define it, having been animated by French studio Fortiche, but it's got the same vibes so it's worth a mention. This series is based on the popular MOBA League of Legends, and focuses on sisters Vi and Jinx as they navigate the apparently utopian city of Piltover. Arcane was met with positive reviews across the board, praised for its storytelling, animation, world-building, and nuanced characterisation. Arcane is enjoyable to absolutely everyone, LoL fans or not, though it's worth noting that it's probably not quite child-friendly. Just a heads up. Castlevania Castlevania is, once again, not animated in Japan, but it's still a masterful adaptation of one of the most beloved franchises in gaming. Castlevania is loosely based on Castlevania 3, and has legendary vampire hunter Trevor Belmont and son of evil Alucard as they take on the famed lord of darkness, Dracula. It's animated beautifully, written extremely well, and has some of the best fight scenes in anything on Netflix. Its sequel series Castlevania: Nocturne is similarly fantastic, so you've got plenty to catch up on. Delicious in Dungeon The less you know about this wonderful anime series before diving in, the better. It's a fantastic series with top-notch writing, gorgeous animation, and some of the best character work in the field. Stop reading this list and go watch it right now.
