Clayton Summers, I have a background in engineering and I serve as the Resident Minister & Caretaker of the Walter Scott Camp & Learning Center south of Effingham. Two of the main focuses of Walter Scott are Education and Creation Care. Here at Walter Scott, we have now had our solar panels installed and tied into the grid for around 18 months. As part of that, we wanted to share the experience thus far, some of the numbers, and how this is a viable (and affordable) way to Care for Creation that nearly any person, family, church, nonprofit, or business entity can do. Our system is a 10kWh system, and thus far, our solar panels have saved an equivalent of 16 tons of carbon dioxide from going into the atmosphere compared to fossil fuel powered electricity. Another way to think about this would be as 1,600 gallons of gas, or driving a standard vehicle 35,000 miles. While there still are minerals mined in manufacturing solar panels, over their lifetime the mined minerals are 26 times less than if this energy were generated by coal. Additionally, solar panels make for cleaner air for everyone, as unlike fossil fuels, they do not increase rates of asthma or other breathing disorders from by-products of burning dirty energy sources. We do want to acknowledge that nothing lasts forever, and that is why we are grateful there are groups working on industrial-grade recycling centers for solar panels. These aren’t yet ready to handle all of the waste that will come, but people are working on solutions to problems we don’t even have yet. Our final note on the environmental impact of solar panels is that they alone aren’t going to stop climate change or save the planet, but they are part of an integrated solution to a clean grid. Along with hydropower, wind, nuclear, tidal generators, and battery storage, we can make a healthier environment together. When it comes to maintenance, the story of our panels can be summed up in one word: “low.” While some folks do clean off their panels to remove dust and improve efficiency, we get frequent enough rain in our area that this isn’t a factor with which we bother. The only times we clean off the panels are if we get substantial snow that will not be melting for several days (we put in maybe 1 hour of sweeping total over the course of a year). Other than this, we check in to make sure everything is functioning on the handy phone app twice a week and let them generate power. It’s pretty simple! The sticker price for our panels was $50,000. However, thanks to legislation in Illinois (the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act) and at the federal level (the Inflation Reduction Act), our total cost after all government rebates is $13,000. Given our utility provider and agreement for being tied into the grid, this means the panels will pay for themselves in 6.5 years, with about another 20 of producing free power after that. With the current legislation in place, we would be giving up free money (available to all non-profits, businesses, and individuals who own a home) to not have these panels. While legislation and tax credits/direct payments can change with different administrations, Illinois’ CEJA legislation does not currently have an end in sight (30% rebate). Even with zero rebates, solar would still be a net positive to our annual budget as it insulates us from any future rate hikes by utility providers. It is worth noting that if you haven’t looked in-depth at solar panels in the past 10 years, they have significantly decreased in cost as production has gone to scale. Like any technology, the cost decreases as it is produced in larger volumes. As of 2024, solar energy is the most cost-effective form of energy on the market. Do note that you should still make certain to go through a reputable company in installing solar. The best way to do this is by asking someone who already has solar panels who they used and if they are happy with the process. If it makes sense, choose a local provider to support the local community. Eighteen months in, if we were to install solar panels again (we will be doing this on other buildings at the camp, so it isn’t hypothetical for us), we would also opt for a battery as well. This will increase the initial cost, but save us money in the long run. We save more by using the energy we produce, than ‘selling’ it to our utility provider. In simple terms, we’d rather store what we don’t need and use it later, like in the evening when the sun isn’t shining, to maximize our savings. We find installing a clean energy source to be one of the expressions of our faith. The numbers show it is wise financial stewardship, but it also is wise earth stewardship. Our Christian faith calls for us to care for this sacred earth, and this is one of the many ways we are able to live into that call. Mining major Vedanta Ltd on Friday said the Mumbai bench of the NCLT has asked the company to call for a meeting of its secured and unsecured creditors and shareholders in the next 90 days to discuss the proposed demerger. The proposed demerger will create independent companies housing aluminium, oil and gas, power, steel and ferrous materials, and base metals businesses. The existing zinc and new incubated businesses will remain under Vedanta Ltd. "A meeting of the equity shareholders... be convened and held within 90 days from the date of receipt of the order," said a two-member bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) comprising Technical Member Madhu Sinha and Judicial Member Reeta Kohli in its order dated November 21. Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal had earlier said the proposed demerger of the company's diverse verticals that represent more than 15 commodities will see it progress from being asset managers to asset owners. As the company passes through the transition phase, Vedanta is focusing on consolidating and strengthening its asset base to emerge as a world leader in each of its verticals, the chairman had said. The diversified natural resources company had moved the NCLT seeking a demerger after receiving a nod from lenders and had expressed hopes of completing the process by the end of this fiscal year. From FY24 onwards, the company is investing USD 1.9 billion as growth capex across its businesses. The company reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 4,352 crore in the September quarter. De Grandpre started with Bauer Hockey in Montreal and then, after graduate school in the U.S., became one of the first marketing employees for Red Bull North America in late 1999. In 2006, when the Austria-based energy drink giant bought the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, de Grandpre was tasked with rebranding the franchise to the Red Bulls. He spent two years as the team’s managing director before moving on to Qualcomm (wireless technology), Imax (immersive cinema) and KIND (healthy snack foods), rejoining the Red Bulls in April 2014 as GM. “Ever since then, it’s been a pleasurable experience, very rewarding.
