ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The roof at the home of the Dallas Cowboys opened without incident and will stay that way for a Monday night meeting with the Cincinnati Bengals. It was to be the first game with the roof open at AT&T Stadium since Oct. 30, 2022, a 49-29 Dallas victory over Chicago. The roof was supposed to be open three weeks ago for Houston's 34-10 victory on another Monday night, but a large piece of metal and other debris fell roughly 300 feet to the field as the retractable roof was opening about three hours before kickoff. The Cowboys decided to close the roof after the incident, and it remained that way for the game. There were no injuries, and the start of the game wasn't delayed. The club said at the time it would investigate the cause with a plan to reopen the roof when it was deemed safe. Wind was cited as a cause for the falling debris. There were gusts of at least 30 mph in the afternoon before the meeting with the Texans. It was sunny with a high in the 70s Monday in the Dallas area, and winds were in the 10 mph range. The dearth of Olympic medals occasioned insults about Indian physical inferiority. Indian democracy is smeared as an oppressive, near-theocratic tyranny. Once associated with swamis and spirituality, the country, in the online arena, has a reputation for littered streets and public defecation. AI-generated caricatures proliferate. Tellingly, western companies have programmed no ‘guardrails’ to limit AI’s use against Indians. (Ironically, diasporic Indians sustain, and sometimes run, the tech companies that developed these image generators in the first place.) Maybe this contempt was always there, and it’s only surfacing now, as more and more people have seized the freedom to offend others. Insulting Indians is not just cost-free but lucrative. Outrage increases engagement, and engagement increases monetisation. Stinging the pride of thousands of online Indians translates into cash payouts for the one posting. The world’s contempt for Indians really shouldn’t come as a surprise to Indians themselves. If hating Indians were an Olympic sport, the gold medal would never leave home. Almost all Indian ideologies, political or religious, draw strength from contempt for other Indians. They offer small groups of Indians a way to proclaim themselves different and, hence, better than all the other Indians. This is now uncoupled from traditional senses of ‘high’ and ‘low’ caste, since even ‘low’ ancestral status can serve the purpose of conferring moral supremacy over oppressive savarnas. The ideology often called ‘Hindutva’ seeks to dissolve these caste distinctions and replace them with a pan-Hindu identity (with the aim, of course, of creating a pan-Hindu voter bloc). By asserting that identity’s rootedness in India, this perspective’s adherents imply, and sometimes insist openly, that Hinduism and its kindred religions are more authentically Indian than non-Dharmic faiths, which themselves condemn millions of Indians for idol-worship and polytheism. The encounter with global anti-Indian racism offers a corrective for all these fantasies of distinction. In the narrowed blue eyes of a foreign racist, a Brahmin and a Dalit receive equal measures of abuse. Which Indian wears a skull cap, a tilak, or a turban is quite irrelevant in the online arena; brown skin is a sufficient identifier. None of the haters can tell a Reddy from a Rajput or a Jatt from a Jain. Thousands of online racists want all Indians to speak English, or better yet, go back to their own country. Is Indian success in business and the professions really just the result of upper-caste privilege? Some of America’s progressive Leftists certainly think so. In recent years, they have published articles and proposed legislation targeting diasporic Indians on the basis of caste. White nationalists think Indian success is illegitimate, too, since they assume that all diasporic Indians favour one another in a vast, scheming network; their notion of Indians approaches, ever more closely, their notion of Jews. This reaction was perhaps inevitable as the Indian diaspora became more visible in other countries. Whether surging or simply surfacing, anti-Indian animus might be a good thing for India itself. A little disillusionment might be healthy from a civilizational perspective. India’s America-facing middle and upper classes might temper their fawning adoration of America’s cultural exports and social mores. Above all, divisive rhetoric — exacerbating regional, religious, and caste-based divisions in pursuit of power — may come to seem counterproductive. It already is, of course, but a habit of arguing internally has left Indians with a weakened sense of external threat awareness. The country’s geographic encirclement has been completed with the political transformation of Bangladesh, but even this new reality cannot get Indians to drop their quarrels for a moment. They seem as incorrigibly argumentative as ancient Greek city-states — or, alas, the many little kingdoms of India’s own history, so easy for outsiders to pick off. Responding to contempt with contempt is a vain tit-for-tat. Yet Indians should not tune out the insults, either. In the best-case scenario, external criticism about filth and disorder can foster more than just a collective identity. It can foster collective self-examination and reform. That is how to distil real nectar from virtual vitriol. A neo-Gandhian vision of pan-Indian unity and uplift would result. The trigger for this updated, organic nationalism would not be one Indian giving inspiring speeches, as it was a hundred years ago, but thousands of foreigners hurling abuse. Despite falling up to 41 per cent from their 52-week high levels, a dozen railway stocks are ending Calendar 2024 on a strong note. In 2025, all eyes would be on increased government spending, clearing of stalled railway tenders and expectations of higher budgetary allocation for the sector in the upcoming Union Budget. Be selective as many railway-linked stocks are still not reasonably valued, analysts warned in a BTMarkets year-end survey. Palace will hope that the goal from Eze — who has scored six from outside the box in the Premier League in 2024, more than any player other than Chelsea ’s Cole Palmer (seven) — is the start of a resurgence for him. It is clear that a combination of Mateta, Sarr and Eze has become Glasner’s preference, even with Eze struggling to make his usual impact to date. It is hard to measure the influence he had from that perch, but his columns surely were the deciding factor in his winning the Nobel in economics in 2008 after eight years of lambasting the George W. Bush administration. [ZH: Yes, we know that isn't a picture of Krugman, but it always makes us laugh...] (His Nobel Prize was given , ostensibly, for “his work in economic geography and in identifying international trade patterns,” but one should have no doubt that, without having the power and influence of the New York Times behind him, it is doubtful that the Nobel Committee would even have known of his existence. I weighed in on the Nobel selection in a column in Forbes, hastily-written during a short break between classes I was teaching at Frostburg State University.) Not surprisingly, the response from his peers is hagiographic. Kathleen Kingsbury, quoting from Krugman’s first column, declares : That lede and the column were signature Krugman: The authoritative voice. The lively writing. The direct style. The clear hand guiding readers through a thicket of policy, data and trade-offs. The big ideas — in that column, they were about the First Global Economy and the Second Global Economy and how the interplay of political and economic questions would shape life worldwide in the 21st century. In little time, Paul became an essential read in Opinion, helping countless readers become more fluent in and mindful of how trade, taxes, technology, the markets, labor and capital intersected with political leadership, ideology and partisanship to shape the lives of people across America and the world. Indeed, Krugman has been influential, but his influence hasn’t been a good thing. He is a disciple of John Maynard Keynes and has played an important role in legitimizing the application of Keynesian schemes by governments to “stimulate” their economies. Those governments were unsuccessful, Krugman claimed, because they had failed to inflate their economies enough to break out of the Keynesian “ liquidity trap ,” an imaginary state of affairs that Murray N. Rothbard fully debunked . Krugman even resorted to fantasy in his quest to fight the mighty “liquidity trap,” claiming that if the US were to prepare for a never-to-come alien invasion, the burst of government spending would revitalize the economy. That nonsense alone should have discredited him as a serious economist, but instead cemented his status as the great advocate for the Keynesian trope that government spending is the key to economic prosperity. To his credit, Krugman did condemn the tariffs proposed by President-elect Donald Trump, but the truth is that he never has truly understood economics from the praxeological vantage point, nor has he ever been interested in seeing economics in that way. An economy, to Krugman, is a series of aggregates—consisting of homogeneous labor, natural resources, and capital—all to be manipulated by government agencies and central banks. The idea that demand springs from what we produce in a market economy was anathema to Krugman, who hated that economic doctrine so much that he referred to Jean-Baptiste Say as a “ cockroach .” Given Krugman’s inability to understand the basics of economic logic, perhaps it isn’t surprising that he made the wild prediction : “By 2005 or so, it will become clear that the Internet’s impact on the economy has been no greater than the fax machine’s.” Someone who cannot understand how production of goods drives demand for other goods most likely isn’t going to comprehend how improving pathways for information will also improve commerce. Krugman was just as uncharitable to the Austrians as he was toward Say—although he never really understood Austrian economics and, to be honest, was happy to remain in blissful ignorance. He referred to the Austrian Business Cycle Theory wrongly as “ The Hangover Theory ,” turning a well-developed theory that meticulously explains the processes of booms and busts and reducing it to a morality play. He wrote: A few weeks ago, a journalist devoted a substantial part of a profile of yours truly to my failure to pay due attention to the “Austrian theory” of the business cycle—a theory that I regard as being about as worthy of serious study as the phlogiston theory of fire. Oh well. But the incident set me thinking—not so much about that particular theory as about the general worldview behind it. Call it the overinvestment theory of recessions, or “liquidationism,” or just call it the “hangover theory.” It is the idea that slumps are the price we pay for booms, that the suffering the economy experiences during a recession is a necessary punishment for the excesses of the previous expansion. The hangover theory is perversely seductive—not because it offers an easy way out, but because it doesn’t. It turns the wiggles on our charts into a morality play, a tale of hubris and downfall. And it offers adherents the special pleasure of dispensing painful advice with a clear conscience, secure in the belief that they are not heartless but merely practicing tough love. Powerful as these seductions may be, they must be resisted—for the hangover theory is disastrously wrongheaded. Recessions are not necessary consequences of booms. They can and should be fought, not with austerity but with liberality—with policies that encourage people to spend more, not less. In other words, government spending on wars was just as economically useful as spending money on new capital and research that increases crop yields because, after all, someone is spending money. To Krugman, an economy is a purely circular thing in which we produce something to put on the shelves and spending is the process by which we remove the goods from the shelves so we can produce something else to put on the shelves—and so on. It is not surprising that regime-minded elites worshiped his every declaration. Governments were not spending too much money; they were spending too little! Those who print money hand-over-fist, who intervene in the markets to direct resources to politically-favored winners are the real public benefactors. Those who question the wisdom of untrammeled government spending are the true enemies of the people. At a Southern Economic Association meeting in 2004, I asked Krugman if he was endorsing the 70 percent tax rates that existed before 1981. “No,” he replied emphatically, “Those rates were insane!” When Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called for the return of 70 percent marginal rates in 2019, Krugman said he believed those rates were “reasonable.” No doubt, he would attribute that change of heart to personal “growth” or just an evolutionary change in his thinking. In truth, believing in an all-powerful state that can, in Keynes’ own words, turn “ stones into bread ” through the magic of spending and creation of new credit does not require personal growth or maturity. Instead, it reflects a mind that prefers fantasy over reality, lies over truth. Paul Krugman can retire peacefully, knowing that he has sanitized the use of raw state power in place of mutually-beneficial exchange that characterizes the marketplace.The Government is undertaking a comprehensive review of existing policies and regulations to facilitate the effective implementation of the parole system and establish community correctional centres. The Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, in partnership with the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS), are working to implement the system that is outlined in the new Prisons and Correctional Service Act. President Mnangagwa recently reassured the ZPCS of continued Government support to enable the organisation to fulfil its constitutional mandate while officiating at a pass-out parade of correctional officers at Ntabazinduna Training School. The parole system initiative underscores Zimbabwe’s commitment to transforming its prison system from one of punishment to one focused on rehabilitation and reintegration. Parole is the conditional release of prisoners before they complete their sentences. The new Act has provision for the establishment of the State Parole Board and sets conditions for early release from prison. The system needs ways of measuring how each prisoner considered for parole would have met the required conditions. An inmate can be released through a decision made by the President, the State Parole Board, the Commissioner General of Prisons, or the Minister responsible for Prisons and Correctional Services. The State Parole Board is authorised to release inmates on day parole. Some of the considerations for granting parole include whether an inmate has displayed meritorious conduct, self-discipline, responsibility and was industrious while in prison. Persons to be released early must not present undue risk to society when on parole, and their release must contribute to the rehabilitation and reintegration of the inmates into society as law-abiding citizens. In his address at the combined 154th and 155th recruit correctional officers’ courses pass-out parade held at ZPCS Ntabazinduna Training School recently, Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said that in liaison with ZPCS, the ministry is reviewing policies and regulations in line with the provisions of the new Act. “This will positively see the effective implementation of the parole system and establishment of community correctional centres, among other aspects. These programmes are crucial in advancing the reintegration process and also assisting in reducing overcrowding in correctional facilities,” he said. Minister Ziyambi added that ZPCS is leaving nothing to chance to address challenges faced by inmates and ex-inmates in their passage to reintegration into society. He said ZPCS has initiated a bid to facilitate the establishment of a foundation aimed at addressing these challenges. “Through stakeholder involvement, the foundation will provide support programmes and mobilise resources necessary for the successful implementation of reintegration initiatives. As a Ministry, we are fully behind this ingenuity and will ensure that the vision becomes a reality.” He noted that it was also vital to make concerted efforts and continue fostering regional collaboration among neighbouring correctional services to holistically enhance successful reintegration. “I, therefore, urge all correctional services in Africa to fully use the African Correctional Services Association in order to propel exchange programmes for mutual benefit towards successful reintegration. It is our belief that African problems should be solved by African solutions.” Speaking at the same ceremony, ZPCS Commissioner-General Moses Chihobvu said the enactment of the new Act had empowered ZPCS to bolster its efforts in the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates. By focusing on rehabilitation over punishment, the new legislation aims to strengthen the furnishing of former inmates with the requisite skills and support for successful re-entry to society after serving their sentences, he said. “Reintegration is crucial not only for the personal growth of released inmates but also for enhancing public safety and reducing recidivism rates.
