Highlights Commenting on the Company's fiscal 2025 first quarter results, Kirsten Lynch , Chief Executive Officer, said, "Our first fiscal quarter historically operates at a loss, given that our North American and European mountain resorts are generally not open for ski season. The government was forced to deny rumors that President Bashar Assad had fled the country. The loss of Homs is a potentially crippling blow for Assad. It stands at an important intersection between Damascus, the capital, and Syria’s coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus — the Syrian leader’s base of support and home to a Russian strategic naval base. The pro-government Sham FM news outlet reported that government forces took positions outside Syria’s third-largest city, without elaborating. Rami Abdurrahman who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said Syrian troops and members of different security agencies have withdrawn from the city, adding that rebels have entered parts of it. The insurgency announced later Saturday that it had taken over Homs. The city's capture is a major victory for the rebels, who have already seized the cities of Aleppo and Hama , as well as large parts of the south, in a lightning offensive that began Nov. 27. Analysts said rebel control of Homs would be a game-changer. The rebels' moves around Damascus, reported by the monitor and a rebel commander, came after the Syrian army withdrew from much of southern part of the country, leaving more areas, including several provincial capitals, under the control of opposition fighters. For the first time in the country’s long-running civil war, the government now has control of only three of 14 provincial capitals: Damascus, Latakia and Tartus. In a statement issued late Saturday, the participants affirmed their support for a political solution to the Syrian crisis “that would lead to the end of military activity and protect civilians.” They also agreed on the importance of strengthening international efforts to increase aid to the Syrian people. The foreign ministers of Iran, Russia and Turkey, meeting in Qatar, called for an end to the hostilities. Turkey is a main backer of the rebels. Qatar's top diplomat, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, criticized Assad for failing to take advantage of the lull in fighting in recent years to address the country’s underlying problems. “Assad didn’t seize this opportunity to start engaging and restoring his relationship with his people,” he said. Ruling on Monday after an emergency hearing at Belfast High Court, judge Mr Justice McAlinden rejected loyalist activist Jamie Bryson’s application for leave for a full judicial review hearing against Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn. The judge said Mr Bryson, who represented himself as a personal litigant, had “very ably argued” his case with “perseverance and cogency”, and had raised some issues of law that caused him “some concern”. However, he found against him on the three grounds of challenge against Mr Benn. Mr Bryson had initially asked the court to grant interim relief in his challenge to prevent Tuesday’s democratic consent motion being heard in the Assembly, pending the hearing of a full judicial review. However, he abandoned that element of his leave application during proceedings on Monday, after the judge made clear he would be “very reluctant” to do anything that would be “trespassing into the realms” of a democratically elected Assembly. Mr Bryson had challenged Mr Benn’s move to initiate the democratic consent process that is required under the UK and EU’s Windsor Framework deal to extend the trading arrangements that apply to Northern Ireland. The previously stated voting intentions of the main parties suggest that Stormont MLAs will vote to continue the measures for another four years when they convene to debate the motion on Tuesday. After the ruling, Mr Bryson told the court he intended to appeal to the Court of Appeal. Any hearing was not expected to come later on Monday. In applying for leave, the activist’s argument was founded on three key grounds. The first was the assertion that Mr Benn failed to make sufficient efforts to ensure Stormont’s leaders undertook a public consultation exercise in Northern Ireland before the consent vote. The second was that the Secretary of State allegedly failed to demonstrate he had paid special regard to protecting Northern Ireland’s place in the UK customs territory in triggering the vote. The third ground centred on law changes introduced by the previous UK government earlier this year, as part of its Safeguarding the Union deal to restore powersharing at Stormont. He claimed that if the amendments achieved their purpose, namely, to safeguard Northern Ireland’s place within the United Kingdom, then it would be unlawful to renew and extend post-Brexit trading arrangements that have created economic barriers between the region and the rest of the UK. In 2023, the UK Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the trading arrangements for Northern Ireland are lawful. The appellants in the case argued that legislation passed at Westminster to give effect to the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement conflicted with the 1800 Acts of Union that formed the United Kingdom, particularly article six of that statute guaranteeing unfettered trade within the UK. The Supreme Court found that while article six of the Acts of Union has been “modified” by the arrangements, that was done with the express will of a sovereign parliament, and so therefore was lawful. Mr Bryson contended that amendments made to the Withdrawal Agreement earlier this year, as part of the Safeguarding the Union measures proposed by the Government to convince the DUP to return to powersharing, purport to reassert and reinforce Northern Ireland’s constitutional status in light of the Supreme Court judgment. He told the court that it was “quite clear” there was “inconsistency” between the different legal provisions. “That inconsistency has to be resolved – there is an arguable case,” he told the judge. However, Dr Tony McGleenan KC, representing the Government, described Mr Bryson’s argument as “hopeless” and “not even arguable”. He said all three limbs of the case had “no prospect of success and serve no utility”. He added: “This is a political argument masquerading as a point of constitutional law and the court should see that for what it is.” After rising to consider the arguments, Justice McAlinden delivered his ruling shortly after 7pm. The judge dismissed the application on the first ground around the lack consultation, noting that such an exercise was not a “mandatory” obligation on Mr Benn. On the second ground, he said there were “very clear” indications that the Secretary of State had paid special regard to the customs territory issues. On the final ground, Justice McAlinden found there was no inconsistency with the recent legislative amendments and the position stated in the Supreme Court judgment. “I don’t think any such inconsistency exists,” he said. He said the amendments were simply a “restatement” of the position as set out by the Supreme Court judgment, and only served to confirm that replacing the Northern Ireland Protocol with the Windsor Framework had not changed the constitutional fact that Article Six of the Acts of Union had been lawfully “modified” by post-Brexit trading arrangements. “It does no more than that,” he said. The framework, and its predecessor the NI Protocol, require checks and customs paperwork on goods moving from Great Britain into Northern Ireland. Under the arrangements, which were designed to ensure no hardening of the Irish land border post-Brexit, Northern Ireland continues to follow many EU trade and customs rules. This has proved highly controversial, with unionists arguing the system threatens Northern Ireland’s place in the United Kingdom. Advocates of the arrangements say they help insulate the region from negative economic consequences of Brexit. A dispute over the so-called Irish Sea border led to the collapse of the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2022, when the DUP withdrew then-first minister Paul Givan from the coalition executive. The impasse lasted two years and ended in January when the Government published its Safeguarding the Union measures. Under the terms of the framework, a Stormont vote must be held on articles five to 10 of the Windsor Framework, which underpin the EU trade laws in force in Northern Ireland, before they expire. The vote must take place before December 17. Based on the numbers in the Assembly, MLAs are expected to back the continuation of the measures for another four years, even though unionists are likely to oppose the move. DUP leader Gavin Robinson has already made clear his party will be voting against continuing the operation of the Windsor Framework. Unlike other votes on contentious issues at Stormont, the motion does not require cross-community support to pass. If it is voted through with a simple majority, the arrangements are extended for four years. In that event, the Government is obliged to hold an independent review of how the framework is working. If it wins cross-community support, which is a majority of unionists and a majority of nationalists, then it is extended for eight years. The chances of it securing such cross-community backing are highly unlikely.

Alisha Brooks, shot to death Sunday night at a house near Jones and Danforth, was a devoted mother who was building a career helping others. “I want everyone to remember the good in her and to remember that she was on an upward trajectory, and this is not the way her life was supposed to end,” said her cousin and friend, Tanecia Clarke-Rodriguez. Brooks’s boyfriend, Aaron Shea, 33, who was arrested by Toronto police at the scene on Sunday, has been charged with first-degree murder. Brooks, 34, was a housing worker at Delta Family, a non-profit agency serving marginalized communities in Northwest Toronto. Her current focus was helping refugees. “Alisha loved life! We cannot believe that we will no longer hear her infectious laughter and be awed by her constant and consistent commitment to showing up for community and for Delta Family,” said executive director Kemi Jacobs. Brooks, when she was seven, was committed to helping children in care, Jacobs said. She was devoted to her daughter, a teenager, said Clarke-Rodriguez, and she supported those she loved with enthusiasm. “She showed up for everything, and every single accomplishment I ever had, she made a big deal. She would share it all over her social media. She would message me — always talking about how proud she was,” said Clarke-Rodriguez, an Indigenous outreach co-ordinator for a post-secondary institution. Brooks, who emerged from foster care angry and troubled, struggled to make the transition from care into adulthood. Clarke-Rodriguez said she was drawn to troubled men. “She did tend to go for these types of partners ... I always wanted better for her,” said Clarke-Rodriguez. “It’s hard because I feel like she kept wanting to go forward and parts of her upbringing and childhood trauma and all of that stuff — that other part of her — would also pull her backwards. So, it was a constant struggle, I feel.” The incident on Sunday took place outside a house owned by the John Howard Society of Toronto, an organization that provides programs and services to people in the criminal justice system. It can house up to 16 males on conditional release from prison, who as part of a Crossroads program can receive counselling, community involvement, employment and education programs. Shea, who stands accused of killing Brooks, was a convicted criminal on a statutory release program, according to the Parole Board of Canada and Corrections Canada. Statutory release is mandated for the final third of a prisoner’s sentence. The parole board has limited control, but can impose specific conditions. “The Parole Board of Canada is limited in Statutory Release decisions to imposing special conditions on the release such as to reside at a specific place such as a halfway house,” said spokesperson Wendy Smith, Corrections Service Canada (CSC) confirmed that Shea was on a statutory release program in the community, and provided the following statement. “Our thoughts are with the victim and their family during this difficult time. We are aware of the charges that have been laid against Aaron Shea and that he is in custody ... While it is not common for such an incident to occur at a Community Residential Facility, it is a serious and tragic incident and it is important that it be thoroughly reviewed to fully examine the circumstances around what happened.” The CSC has launched an investigation into the incident, and said if it determines further changes are needed to improve public safety, “it will not hesitate to implement (them).” Brooks was a mentor in the Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada’s (CAFDN) CHEERS program (Creating Hope and Ensuring Excellent Roads to Success), helping Black youth transition from government care to independent living. “Alisha demonstrated remarkable passion and commitment to advocating for children and youth in care,” according to a message the organization posted on its website. Clarke-Rodriguez urged those who knew and cared for Brooks to show up for her daughter. “If anyone that does love her wants to give, they should be pouring into her daughter, whether that’s with words, affirmations, gifts, money, whatever. This is an unassuming home in suburban Melbourne, and Owlvine is a real-life witch. “We’re everywhere — young and old, in the inner city and out in the middle of the bush,” the 36-year-old told news.com.au. “You could be sharing a desk with one of us, or living on the same street.” From the Wizard of Oz to The Craft , the black-caped, cackling witch has been a fixture in popular culture — sand a subject of fascination and fear — for centuries. But if you think that these magical beings belong only within the pages of a storybook or on the big screen, think again. Now we’re seeing witches depicted as young, modern people we can relate to.” David — who has been practising witchcraft for more than 40 years — also believes that the popularisation of the witch on screen has been one of the biggest factors in the explosion of interest both in witchcraft and the occult in general. “The first biggest explosion of interest, I remember, was back when The Craft movie came out,” he said. “The internet was new and there were all types of ways to access information. Every second contact I got back then was from some young girl wanting to change the colour of her eyes or hair with magic.” A rejection of organised religion The fastest-growing religion in the western world is, in fact, no religion at all. The 2016 Census showed that “religious nones” now make up a quarter of the population (a huge change from 50 years ago, when 88 per cent of the population identified as Christian). Clearly, organised religion has fallen on hard times . But with archaic, dogmatic institutions built on judgment and hellfire, is it really surprising? And while interest in traditional religions is decreasing, interest in pagan and nature-based faith systems (including witchcraft) is on the rise — more than 33,000 people claimed an affiliation with a nature religion, including paganism and Wicca. “Many people have been returning to the ‘old ways’ as they have become disenfranchised,” David said. You can practise any religion and still practise witchcraft. And while there’s no formal religious texts or Ten Commandments equivalent, Wicca has what’s known as the “threefold law”, which roughly states that whatever energy you send out will come back to you three times over. “A common misunderstanding is that all witches are all the same,” added Owlvine. “Some witches do consider it their religion, but many don’t. Witches come from all walks of life: rich and poor, male and female, young and old — anyone can be a witch. “Witchcraft is a fluid path, as I grow as a person I am able to weave who I am and what I’m learning in to my magical practice. I think people are hungry to bring all of that into their spiritual lives too, rather than simply following someone else’s rules.” The appeal of hocus pocus A big part of the obvious appeal in the mystical world of the witch is the ability to perform spells. After all, with the potential to attract love, money, or success — all by uttering a quick “abracadabra” or by carrying the right combination of crystals — it’s easy to see why many jump on the witch bandwagon. “One of the most common questions I’m asked when people find out that I’m a witch is: ‘do you cast spells?’” said Owlvine. A big part of the obvious appeal in the mystical world of the witch is the ability to perform spells. “After all, who wouldn’t want to be able to cast a spell with the flick of a magic wand?” Magic and the magic aesthetic — as evidenced via the trending #witchesofinstagram hashtag (which currently has more than 10 million posts) — is a big part of the appeal of being a witch. But the importance of casting spells differs in the practices of witch to witch. “Spells play a fairly large part in my practice,” added Owlvine. “How often I cast depends on what’s going on in my world at the time and what I need. Most often I do spells that relate to protection for me and my family, creating harmonious atmospheres, for focus in study and work, or to help support me in achieving my goals. “Modern witches are all about harmony and not about claiming external power over others.” The future of witchcraft With social media posts increasing daily and online occult sites and courses skyrocketing, it’s clear that the modern-day version of the witch is here to stay. And in a world as stressful and turbulent as ours — one in which our search for meaning and control is becoming more and more urgent — it’s understandable. Witchcraft offers both a community and the potential to harness control in a world that it is increasingly fraught and fractioned. “Witchcraft has completely shifted the way I live my life and view myself,” Owlvine explained. “Before coming to the craft I was incredibly anxious, depressed and had a strong victim mentality. Now I understand how much power I actually have over my experience in this life. “I know that when times get tough, I have tools that help me get through difficulties. I am a completely different person to who I was five years ago, and all for the better.” But despite witchcraft having gone global, there’s unfortunately a lot of stigma still attached and “coming out of the broom closet” is a rite of passage that many witches must go through. “I have experienced people who are curious and excited to know that I’m a witch,” said Owlvine. “But on the other hand, I have met some very narrow-minded people who have reacted in a negative way towards me. In the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections, Shinde Sena's Gulabrao Ragunath Patil and Nationalist Congress Party's (Sharad Pawar faction) Gulabrao Deokar are witnessing a tough fight in Jalgaon Rural seat. Macron has called Notre Dame’s reopening “a jolt of hope.” Observers say he hoped the occasion would briefly silence his critics and showcase France’s unity and resilience under his leadership — a rare moment of grace in a presidency now facing a grave crisis. Inside Notre Dame, 42,000 square meters of stonework—equivalent to six soccer pitches—gleamed anew, revealing intricate carvings and luminous limestone. Above, 2,000 oak beams, nicknamed “the forest,” restored the cathedral’s iconic spire and roof. The great organ, dormant for over five years, roared back to life like a slumbering giant. Notre Dame echoed to the sound of a sustained standing ovation after the showing of a short movie that documented the gargantuan rebuilding effort. Outside, the word “MERCI” — thank you — was projected against the cathedral’s iconic western facade. The movie showed the terrible wounds left by the inferno — the gaping holes torn into its vaulted ceilings and the burned roof. But that was followed by images of all types of artisans, many using traditional handicraft techniques, who collectively restored Notre Dame to look better now than ever. "We went from night to light," said one of the workers in the movie. Security will be high through the weekend, echoing measures taken during the Paris Olympics earlier this year. The Île de la Cité — the small island in the River Seine that is home to Notre Dame and the historic heart of Paris— is closed to tourists and non-residents. Police vans and barriers blocked cobblestoned streets in a large perimeter around the island, while soldiers in thick body armor and sniffer dogs patrolled embankments. The complainant, Vishal Singhal, a resident of Sector 12, Panchkula, took “The Liquor Estate” to court, submitting that after purchasing four bottles of Hopper Witbier beer on July 10, 2023, for ₹ 280, and another four the next day, he started feeling unwell later that night. He experienced stomach aches, vomiting, and developed symptoms of food poisoning. Singhal, who suspected the beer was the culprit, eventually discovered that the beers sold to him were old, stale and expired, unfit for human consumption. After undergoing an ultrasound and blood tests, he was shocked to be diagnosed with liver inflammation, which he blamed on the beer. He also underwent a gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) test, used to diagnose liver or bile duct issues, which revealed high concentration of toxins in his bile ducts. To add to his woes, the beer bottles lacked important details like the maximum retail price, import dates, and contact information for the importer and distributor. The opposite parties, including The Liquor Estate and Ozark Merchandising Pvt Ltd, contested the complaint, arguing that the receipt only showed the purchase of “four beers” and didn’t specify the brand. They also pointed out that Singhal had no concrete proof connecting them to the sale. A notice was also sent to Brindco Sales Pvt Ltd in New Delhi, but no one appeared on their behalf. Thus, they were proceeded against ex parte.
