Had the United Conservative Party (UCP)’s John Middleton-Hope won Wednesday’s by-election in Lethbridge-West, one wonders if Health Minister Adriana LaGrange would have invited him along yesterday to help her make her long-overdue announcement of the government’s funding agreement with Alberta doctors? Alas for the UCP, Middleton-Hope was not the winner of the by-election. The Alberta NDP’s Rob Miyashiro was, so Premier Danielle Smith had to satisfy herself by publishing a longish post on social media congratulating Middleton-Hope for losing the election. There was nary of a word of congratulations for the winner, of course, but that’s how the UCP rolls. Alberta Conservatives are poor losers. But it’s always worth keeping in mind that, as Smith’s government illustrates daily, they’re worse winners! Smith’s note congratulating the loser for his loss included this interesting phrase: “While we did not come away with a win, our candidate and the UCP gained a higher percentage of votes than we had earned in the 2023 General Election.” Let’s pause for a moment to examine this bit of hyperbole: On Wednesday, Middleton-Hope captured 44.9 per cent of the vote, an increase of a whopping 2.4 per cent over the 42.5-per-cent accumulated UCP candidate Cheryl Seaborn in the 2023 general election. By this standard, the UCP would also be entitled to boast that Mr. Middleton-Hope’s tally also topped party standard-bearer Karri Flatla’s 44.3 per cent in the 2019 general election. Another way to describe this phenomenon, of course, would be to say that no matter how many people vote in Lethbridge-West – 13,561 on Wednesday compared to 22,635 in the 2023 general election – the UCP just can’t seem to get past 45 per cent. The big mystery that went unacknowledged in the government’s press release yesterday is why a deal has that was first announced by the government on April 17 has been sitting on a desk in the provincial Treasury Department for almost long enough to bring a baby to term while AMA leaders pleaded with the government to sign and implement what they’d agreed to. “This agreement should have been done back in May when the premier promised it would be signed within a couple of weeks,” NDP Health Critic Sarah Hoffman remarked yesterday. Speculation has been that the government didn’t want to reveal anything that might impact ongoing negotiations with other health care workers such as nurses, medical technologists and care aids, not to mention civil servants, municipal employees, schoolteachers and other education workers. An additional $250 million a year for physician compensation might well have an impact on their demands. The agreement still hinges on the willingness of a minimum of 500 doctors to take part in the new funding formula, so while the deal is done, it’s not really a done deal just yet. Just a suggestion, but before we all freak out, perhaps someone should put in a call to the office of Chief Actuary Assia Billig to see what’s going on. There has been, for one thing, some stuff taking place in Ottawa in the past few days related to federal government financing, and the finance minister who asked the Chief Actuary to deliver the report is no longer on the job. Moreover, even without a need to replace a federal finance minister in a hurry and deliver a financial update, the week before Christmas seems like a peculiar time for the Chief Actuary’s estimate to have been expected by the province. One thing that can be safely assumed is that with or without the Chief Actuary’s full report, the UCP’s estimate that Alberta, with about 11.5 per cent of Canada’s population, is owed 53 per cent of the CPP fund is both preposterous and obviously politically motivated. Decades before self-driving cars were unleashed to the public a 1986 vehicle was moving without a human at the wheel. Musk is typically dubbed as the person who brought out self-driving vehicles. Decades before Musk's Tesla company was created a German man brought driverless vehicles onto European roads. Ernst Dickmanns, a German scientist, developed a vehicle that was able to navigate roads on its own. A group of German engineers came together in the 1980s to transform a Mercedes van, bought by Ernst. Read more on cars The team took eight years to build their technological phenomenon and it hit the roads in 1986. This van was filled with sensors that could detect cars, people, and objects around it. The modified Mercedes was able to identify up to six items and obstructions at any one time. The special car reached up to 59mph and was able to change lanes and stop on its own. Most read in Motors Despite his successes, Ernst's plans were initially doubted at the German university where he ran his tests, according to Politico . The scientist started out as an aerospace engineer but set his sights on revolutionizing the car world. Ernst said: “The colleagues at the university said, well, he’s an oddball, but he’s got a track record [of achievements in aerospace technology,] so let’s just let him do it." His modified van became the first self-driving car when it rode on a skidpan on the university campus. He upped the stakes when he sent his creation down the unopened autobahn at top speeds. Ernst then said he was approached by German carmaker Daimler to get a self-driving car on a busy Parisian road. The creator revealed he found this proposition to be "absurd" but eventually agreed to take on the challenge. The autonomous car picked up a group of elite visitors from Charles de Gaulle Airport and drove onto an open motorway where it was switched to self-drive mode. Ernst's creation was able to switch lanes on its own, while an engineer remained behind the wheel in case something went wrong. One of the engineers said: “Sometimes, we would take our hands off the wheel." This remarkable team even took one of their self-driving creations on a long ride from Southern Germany to Denmark . Two years ago, both Mauren Castro, 41, and Marta Sosa, 70, were stay-at-home mums dependent on their fishermen husbands to provide for their families of four and six. Today, they are part of the all-female Piel Marina (Marine Skin) cooperative, which turns fish skins that used to be discarded at sea into sustainable fashion. For generations, fishing was the economic mainstay in Costa de Pajaros, a village situated about 100 kilometres west of the capital San Jose. But fishermen say that regulations aimed at making stocks more sustainable, which this year included a complete ban on fishing between May and July, have made it harder to live off the sea. Wearing blue rubber gloves and white t-shirts bearing the words Piel Marina, Sosa and Castro show how a skin rescued from a filleted sea bass can become a pair of earrings, a necklace or even a handbag. First they rub the skin gently between their fingers to remove the scales and any remaining flesh. “Then we take it and wash it with soap, as if we were washing clothes. Then we dye it with glycerin and alcohol and natural dye, and then we dry it,” Sosa explained. The dyeing process takes four days, with another four needed for the leather to dry in the sun to produce a fabric that is soft and pliable but strong. Crucially, it no longer smells of fish and has the advantage of being waterproof. The women are not only tanners, but have also become jewellery designers who sell colourful earrings and necklaces on Instagram and Facebook. A pair of earrings in the shape of a butterfly costs the equivalent of about USD7. The women also sell some of the leather to small-scale textile producers in Puntarenas, the main port on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. Costa Rica is just the latest country to catch onto the potential of fish tanning, an age-old practise among Indigenous peoples from Alaska to Scandanavia to Asia. While salmon skins were traditionally used by the Ainu people in Japan and the Inuit in northern Canada to make boots and clothes, and on the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya they now use the local tilapia delicacy to make handbags. On the Internet, fish leather bags sell for hundreds of dollars. One of the first big-name fashion designers to get hooked on the skins was former Dior creative director John Galliano, who sported an Atlantic salmon skin jacket and fish leather bag in his 2002 collections. For the moment, the women of the Piel Marina cooperative are glad to have a job that gets them away from domestic chores and provides them with a small income. But they dream of the day when the leather they make by hand on the beach struts the global stage.
