OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Alabama faces a tougher roadblock than it might appear in its quest to maintain positioning for the College Football Playoff. Sure, Oklahoma has struggled in its first Southeastern Conference season. The Sooners (5-5, 1-5 SEC) have lost four straight conference games. The Sooners have fired their offensive coordinator and they have the worst offense in the league. But they have a tough defense, too. Linebacker Danny Stutsman, a midseason AP All-American, anchors a nasty unit that has kept the Sooners competitive in losses at Ole Miss and Missouri. He ranks second in the SEC with 96 tackles. Defensive back Billy Bowman Jr. has scored four defensive touchdowns since the start of the 2023 season, tied for the most nationally. Defensive end R Mason Thomas has seven sacks, with six coming in the fourth quarter of close games. Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer is paying attention. “It’s going to take a great week of preparation,” DeBoer said. “A physical football team all around. Their defense is, I think, an extremely tough defense in all ways — just what they do with their scheme and then with their personnel, the way they fly around.” Plus, Oklahoma is motivated. It’s Senior Day for a program that would become bowl eligible with a win. Beating the seventh-ranked Crimson Tide could cure a lot of ills for the Sooners. “I think they know they could be a great example for what fight and what belief and what finishing and what improving and what proving people wrong looks like,” Oklahoma coach Brent Venables said. “And I think this is a group of guys that are committed to doing that.” Alabama (8-2, 4-2) has more answers than most. Jalen Milroe has passed for 15 touchdowns and rushed for 17. Freshman receiver Ryan Williams has 40 catches for 767 yards and eight touchdowns. “Yeah, incredibly explosive, and they have great playmakers everywhere,” Venables said. “Certainly, it starts — everything goes through the quarterback.” There has been much talk about what a third loss would do to Alabama’s playoff hopes. DeBoer said his team isn’t focused on that. “I think we’re really honed in and the guys really believe on and have understood the significance of really focusing on where we’re at right now,” he said. “We talk about the next play is the most important play, the next game is the most important game. We haven’t thought about anything beyond Oklahoma.” Heisman hype Milroe is only the fourth SEC quarterback since 2007 to have at least 15 passing touchdowns and 17 rushing touchdowns in a single season. The others won the Heisman Trophy during their seasons — Florida’s Tim Tebow in 2007, Auburn’s Cam Newton in 2010 and Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel in 2012. “I think it just starts with doing what’s best for the team, and that’s what Jalen is all about,” DeBoer said. Arnold’s improvement Since returning to the lineup early against South Carolina four games ago, Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold has completed 70 of 112 passes for 705 yards with five touchdowns with no interceptions. Still, his fumble that was returned for a touchdown in the final minute against Missouri was the difference in a 30-23 loss. Arnold has dealt with significant criticism all season. “That goes along with that position at a place like the University of Oklahoma,” Venables said. “That’s a position that’s a little bit ... it’s a bit like the head coach position. There’s a different type of microscope and there’s a different type of focus and that’s okay he’s got broad shoulders to handle that.” Questionable Barnes Oklahoma running back Jovantae Barnes ran for career highs of 203 yards and three touchdowns against Maine two weeks ago, then he sat out last week’s loss to Missouri. He’s listed as questionable on this week’s injury report. He leads the Sooners with 577 yards rushing this season. Stepping in Venables is impressed with what DeBoer has done in his first year at Alabama since taking over for Nick Saban. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. “One of Kalen’s strengths as a football coach — a very successful coach — is he takes a group of players that he has, and their staff figures out what they can do,” Venables said. “They major in that, put them in position to be successful based on the players’ strengths. They’ve done a nice job of doing that throughout the course of the season.” Big games Oklahoma beat heavily favored Alabama 45-31 in the Sugar Bowl to cap the 2013 season, a game that helped pump energy into the Sooner program under Bob Stoops. Alabama got revenge in 2018, beating the Sooners 45-34 in the College Football Playoff. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. EDMONTON - Alberta election officials say they are working to get the word out as they deal with a Canada Post strike ahead of a Christmas-week byelection in Lethbridge-West. Because of the postal workers’ strike, Elections Alberta cannot send “Where to Vote” cards to voters, and it says special mail-in ballots must be shipped through a courier service or dropped off in person ahead of the Dec. 18 vote. The office has a plan in motion to inform residents using print, radio, media and online ads, and by distributing flyers across the riding with general information. Elections Alberta spokesperson Robyn Bell said if people are concerned about weather or travel plans getting in the way, there are many ways they can vote and information is available on the Elections Alberta website or by phone. She noted byelections tend to have lower turnouts than general elections, averaging only about 31 per cent of electors over the past five years. “The Canada Post strike presents a unique challenge that we haven’t seen in recent years,” she said. The last time an Alberta byelection was held so close to Christmas was on Dec. 14, 2017. Although Bell said Elections Alberta aims to be in a state of election readiness at all times, the timing of the Lethbridge vote has been a political football. The vote will fill a vacancy created July 1 when NDP Lethbridge-West legislature member Shannon Phillips resigned. NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi had repeatedly urged Premier Danielle Smith to call it once both his party and the governing United Conservative Party had their candidates in place in September. Nenshi said Smith waited until the last second to call the race because, he said, lower voter turnout only benefits the UCP. “The premier had all summer and all fall to call this election, and she decided to wait till the last second because she doesn’t want people to vote,” he told reporters in the legislature Wednesday. Smith has said that she was waiting for Nenshi - who does not have a seat in the legislature - to declare his intentions to run for a seat so that two byelections could be called at once. On Monday, Smith pointed to the de facto appointment of one of her MLAs in the interim during question period in the legislature. “We have a fantastic MLA who’s been doing double duty, representing both ridings of Lethbridge-East and Lethbridge-West, and we’re grateful for his efforts in doing so,” she said, referring to Affordability Minister Nathan Neudorf. Earlier this week, the NDP’s executive director, Garett Spelliscy, penned a letter to Alberta’s chief electoral officer on Monday calling for “robust voter outreach” to ensure turnout isn’t low. He also noted that, as of Sunday, the Elections Alberta website listed the wrong election date. Bell said that was due to a human error, and all their materials have since been updated. “It’s really unfortunate that it happened in the first place - the NDP were the ones to notify us of the mistake, and we took immediate actions to correct it,” she said. The NDP candidate is Rob Miyashiro while John Middleton-Hope is running under the UCP banner. Advance voting begins on Dec. 10. A look back at 2024 in photosMOREHEAD, Ky. (AP) — Isaiah Smith ran for a career-high 205 yards on 31 carries and scored a touchdown and San Diego beat Morehead State 37-14 in a season-ending contest for both teams on Saturday. Grant Sergent threw for 184 yards and two touchdowns for San Diego (8-3, 6-2 Pioneer Football League) which ended the season with a four-game win streak and winners of six of seven. The Toreros finished in sole possession of second place in the PFL behind Drake (7-1), which clinched the league outright with a 49-10 win over Stetson on Saturday. Drake beat San Diego 30-28 on a walk-off field goal on Sept. 28 in Des Moines, Iowa. Bryce Patterson threw for 133 yards and a touchdown and James Louis ran for a touchdown for the Eagles (7-5, 5-3). ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Baseball’s reigning Evil Empire took the initiative this week, signing another high-profile starting pitcher and giving its fans something additional to be grateful for during Thanksgiving week (besides, of course, those shots of the Commissioner’s Trophy being shown off here, there and everywhere throughout Southern California). And after the bombshell announcement Tuesday night, that the Dodgers had signed Blake Snell , the howls could be heard throughout the land. The Dodgers are making a mockery of the sport. The rest of baseball can’t compete. They’re signing everybody! And how are the Cincinnatis and Pittsburghs and Colorados of the sport able to compete with an organization that not only brings in boatloads of money – and has created a second source of runaway revenue through its ties to Japan – but isn’t interested in hoarding it? Shouldn’t the next step be a salary cap to restrain this franchise’s runaway spending? Oh, stop it. Competitive balance is not an issue in baseball, period. Four different teams have won the last four World Series, and nine different fan bases have celebrated championships in the last 12 years. There hasn’t been a repeat champion in ... checks notes ... a quarter of a century. (That would be the New York Yankees, the first Evil Empire, in 1999-2000.) Meanwhile, Kansas City, Detroit and Baltimore have all risen from rebuilding to contention in the last couple of seasons. Milwaukee and Cleveland, both smaller markets, were legitimate threats as this past postseason began. And the Padres, long squeezed between Mexico to their south, the Imperial Valley to their east, the Pacific to their west and L.A. to their north, just might have been the second-best team in baseball in 2024 and, may we remind you, had the Dodgers by the neck going into Game 4 of their National League Division Series . Nor are they going away, even with some payroll retrenching in the wake of controlling owner Peter Seidler’s death. (But, nope, still no parade.) Most of the caterwauling, of course, comes from those whose favorite teams were either outbid or declined to spend. Trust me, no ownership in Major League Baseball can claim poverty, even with the cable TV issues that have scrambled some teams’ finances. Yes, big-market teams start with a financial advantage. Yes, Diamond Sports’ bankruptcy and the cord-cutting revolution have factored in. And yes, the Dodgers and Yankees have insulated themselves to a degree by owning their own cable networks. So, maybe, give them some credit for intelligence and foresight? Front Office Sports reported that deferrals on Snell’s reported five-year, $182 million deal, said to be $60 million, would push the Dodgers closer to the $1 billion mark in deferred money owed to five players. Shohei Ohtani’s whopping $680 million deferred on a $700 million contract signed last winter enabled the Dodgers to add additional pieces. Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts also have chunks of deferred money in their contracts – as does, interestingly, Teoscar Hernández on his one-year 2024 deal with the Dodgers. That would make that contract even more of a bargain than we thought. And this is an undisputable fact: Salary caps and other payroll-limiting mechanisms put no limits on front office creativity and ingenuity. It’s been pretty well established that in Guggenheim Baseball’s 13-year ownership of the Dodgers, especially after Mark Walter’s organization corrected the problems of the Frank McCourt era and particularly after Friedman arrived from Tampa Bay in 2015, the Dodgers have a smart, savvy organization whose advantages go way beyond their cash on hand. (And yes, as I noted on social media Tuesday night, we do tease them about sometimes trying too hard to be the smartest guys in the room. But most of the time they are, anyway.) Assuming everyone stays healthy – and as we saw throughout baseball in 2024, that’s a tall ask – what will the Dodgers’ rotation look like in 2025? They’ll have left-hander Snell, a two-time Cy Young Award winner who was one of the victims of a soft free agent market last spring and didn’t sign with the San Francisco Giants until March 19. He got off to a dreadful start as a result but was lights out from the start of July. In 14 starts he was 5-0 (and his team 12-2 in those starts), with a 1.23 ERA, an opponents’ batting average of .123, an 0.78 WHIP, five double-digit strikeout games and a 3.8-1 strikeout to walk ratio, and a complete-game no-hitter, an achievement for someone denigrated as a five-and-dive pitcher. Maybe those final three months spurred him to sign early this time. It’s almost certain the Dodgers will use a six-man rotation from the start of the season, and right now they have seven possibilities and who knows what they do from here. They’ll have Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Shohei Ohtani as a pitcher. Tyler Glasnow, Snell’s former teammate in Tampa Bay, will be back, as will Tony Gonsolin in his return from Tommy John surgery. Dustin May, essentially inactive since May of 2023, will return, and Clayton Kershaw is expected to re-sign and has indicated he plans to retire a Dodger. Is there room for free agent Jack Flaherty, last season’s major trade deadline acquisition? Or fellow free agent Walker Buehler, who closed out Game 5 of the World Series against the Yankees, following a sometimes spotty comeback from injury? And the wild card might be Roki Sasaki, who will be posted by his Japanese team this winter. The Dodgers had long been considered the favorites to land him, and even Snell’s signing might not change that. Then again, the way the 2024 Dodgers went through pitchers because of injuries – 40 for the season, including 12 starting pitchers – shouldn’t they be tempted to grab every reasonably healthy arm they can and sort it out as they go along? But this is, and should be, the bottom line: Every fan in every sport wants the people running their favorite team to care as much about winning as they do. In a lot of cities, with a lot of teams, that’s really hard to envision. In Dodger Stadium, it’s not hard at all. And if they’re going to be the new Evil Empire, why not just lean into it and have Dieter Ruehle play “The Imperial March” (i.e., Darth Vader’s Theme) before every game? jalexander@scng.comFollowing the Green Bay Packers ' 34-31 Thursday night loss to the Detroit Lions , one team that benefits in the standings is the Washington Commanders . Washington (8-5) is now only one game behind the Packers (9-4) in the race for the NFC's second Wild Card playoff spot. Both teams are solidly in position to make the playoffs, with no one outside the NFC's current field above .500. However, there will be a major difference between the No. 6 seed and the No. 7 seed. Whichever team earns the No. 7 seed, the final Wild Card position, will be forced to travel to either Detroit or Philadelphia for their playoff opener. The 12-1 Lions and the 10-2 Eagles, in all likelihood, are not going to lose on Wild Card weekend. The No. 6 seed, on the other hand, would face off against either the NFC West or NFC South winner, and neither of those divisions have any elite squads. The Seattle Seahawks currently lead the West at 7-5, while the Atlanta Falcons lead the South at 6-6. Though still on the road, either of those hypothetical matchups would be much more favorable for the Commanders. To earn that slot, they must gain at least one more game on the Packers throughout the remainder of the regular season. It is doable. Following its bye, Washington faces only one team with a winning record (the Eagles at home in Week 16) while the Packers have road matchups remaining against the Seahawks and the 10-2 Minnesota Vikings . The Commanders also currently hold the tiebreaker in such an event, with a 2-2 record in divisional play while Green Bay is 1-3. With this opportunity up for grabs, the Commanders cannot simply coast into the playoffs. They must stay on the gas in order to secure a matchup that would give them a more realistic shot at advancing past Wild Card weekend.

Jimmy Carter , a one-term U.S. president who dedicated his time after the White House to widespread humanitarian work, has died at age 100. Carter, who became the oldest living ex-president after the death of George H.W. Bush in November 2018, had the longest post-presidency in U.S. history, having left the White House in January 1981. On Feb. 18, 2023, The Carter Center ― a charity founded by the former president ― announced that after a “series of short hospital stays,” Carter would begin receiving hospice care at home “instead of additional medical intervention.” On Nov. 17, the Center announced his wife Rosalynn Carter had also entered hospice care after previously being diagnosed with dementia. She died two days later. Despite being in hospice, Carter appeared at her funeral. On May 14, Carter’s grandson Jason, the chair of The Carter Center, said the former president was nearing the end of his life. “He really is, I think, coming to the end that, as I’ve said before, there’s a part of this faith journey that is so important to him,” he said . “And there’s a part of that faith journey that you only can live at the very end. And I think he has been there in that space.” The Carters made their last public appearance together in September, when they were spotted riding in a black SUV at the Plains Peanut Festival in Plains, Georgia, seven months after the former president entered hospice care. Carter had few public appearances over the last years of his life. He and his wife skipped Joe Biden ’s presidential inauguration in January 2021, their first time missing the ceremonies since Carter was sworn in as the 39th president in 1977. But Carter continued to speak out about humanitarian and political issues. In January 2021, Carter joined with other former living presidents to condemn the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, calling it a “national tragedy” and “not who we are as a nation.” The following year, Carter penned an op-ed for The New York Times expressing concern about U.S. democracy and called on leaders and candidates to “uphold the ideals of freedom and adhere to high standards of conduct.” He spoke out in February 2022 against the Russian invasion of Ukraine, arguing the “unjust assault” threatened “security in Europe and the entire world.” Carter experienced several health setbacks in his later years. He was admitted to the hospital in November 2019 for a procedure to relieve pressure on his brain caused by several falls. He continued to face health issues that year, including a broken hip, pelvic fracture and a urinary tract infection . In August 2015, Carter revealed he had been diagnosed with cancer . He received radiation treatment for melanoma and was declared cancer-free that December, announcing four months later that he no longer needed to receive treatment. The bout with cancer forced Carter to come to terms with mortality. In a 2019 address to a church in his hometown, he said he was “ completely at ease ” with death. “I assumed, naturally, that I was going to die very quickly,” Carter told the congregation at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia. “I obviously prayed about it. I didn’t ask God to let me live, but I asked God to give me a proper attitude toward death. And I found that I was absolutely and completely at ease with death.” He was born James Earl Carter Jr. in Georgia in October 1924, the first of his parents’ four children. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, then served seven years in the Navy before returning to Georgia, where he operated a peanut farm, then served as state senator and governor. Carter, a Democrat, kicked off his presidential run in December 1974, choosing Walter Mondale as his running mate. In November 1976, he defeated Gerald Ford, who had become president two years earlier when Richard Nixon resigned. During his four years in the White House, Carter dealt with a national energy crisis, expanded the national park system and installed solar panels on the White House. He signed the bill that allowed for the creation of the U.S. Department of Education. Perhaps his greatest achievement, the Camp David Accords , settled hostilities between Egypt and Israel and established diplomatic relations. But it failed to live up to his hopes for serious negotiations toward Palestinian statehood. His administration was dogged by other foreign policy issues, including the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the Iran hostage crisis . Carter was deeply unpopular by the time Republican Ronald Reagan defeated him in the 1980 election and he left office with a 34% approval rating, according to Gallup . After the presidency, Carter became a champion for international human rights. He monitored elections across the globe and devoted time to building houses for the charity Habitat for Humanity. His efforts through The Carter Center nearly eliminated Guinea worm disease, an infection that has plagued Africa for centuries. He became a self-styled international diplomat, sometimes working unofficially. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his work “to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development” through The Carter Center. “He remains such a controversial figure,” Julian Zelizer, a professor of history at Princeton University and a Carter biographer, told The Atlantic in 2012 . “But like it or not, he re-invented the post-presidency.” He wrote books and spoke his mind on contemporary political issues. In July 2015, for example , he said the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision that allowed unlimited campaign donations had turned America into an “oligarchy.” “It violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system,” Carter said. “Now it’s just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president.” He also spoke out against then-President Donald Trump, telling The Washington Post in August 2018 he thought Trump was “a disaster” after previously arguing that the media were too harsh and saying he had prayed for him . Carter married Rosalynn in 1946. They had four children, 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren . The couple celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in 2021 with a private reception attended by former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, country artists Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, and more. Rosalynn was heavily involved in the humanitarian work her husband did after leaving the White House, and advocates for several causes on her own , including mental health and caregiving. Carter, a Baptist, was deeply religious, and told The Atlantic in July 2015 he believed he’d led “several hundred” people to Christ through one-on-one interaction. He taught Sunday school lessons every other week at Maranatha Baptist Church for decades after he left the White House. He told HuffPost Live in 2015 that he approved of same-sex marriage, saying he believed Jesus would as well. “I think Jesus would encourage any love affair if it was honest and sincere and was not damaging to anyone else, and I don’t see that gay marriage damages anyone else,” he said. While speaking at The Carter Center in 2019, Carter described his aspirations for the Center’s future initiatives, he said he hoped it would speak out against armed conflicts and “wars by the United States.” “I just want to keep the whole world at peace,” Carter said. Related From Our PartnerCroatia's President Zoran Milanovic will face conservative rival Dragan Primorac in an election run-off in two weeks' time after the incumbent narrowly missed out an outright victory on Sunday, official results showed. The results came after an exit poll, released immediately after the polling stations closed, showed that Milanovic, backed by the opposition left-wing Social Democrats, had scooped more than 50 percent of the first round vote and would thus avoid the January 12 run-off. Milanovic won 49.11 percent of the first round vote and Primorac, backed by the ruling conservative HDZ party, took 19.37 percent, according to results released by the state electoral commission from nearly all of the polling stations. Such a strong lead for Milanovic, whom surveys labelled a favourite ahead of the vote, raises serious concerns for Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic's HDZ. The election comes as the European Union and NATO member country of 3.8 million people struggles with biting inflation, widespread corruption and a labour shortage. Among the eight contenders, centre-right MP Marija Selak Raspudic and green-left MP Ivana Kekin followed the two main rivals, the exit poll showed. They each won around nine percent of the vote. Croatia's president commands the country's armed forces and has a say in foreign policy. But despite limited powers, many believe the office is key for the political balance of power in a country mainly governed by the HDZ since independence in 1991. "All the eggs should not be in one basket," Nenad Horvat, a salesman in his 40s, told AFP. He sees Milanovic, a former leftist prime minister, as the "last barrier to all levers of power falling into the hands of HDZ", echoing the view of many that was reflected in Sunday's vote results. The 58-year-old Milanovic has been one of Croatia's leading and most colourful political figures for nearly two decades. Sharp and eloquent, he won the presidency for the Social Democrats (SDP) in 2020 with pledges to advocate tolerance and liberalism. But he used the office to attack political opponents and EU officials, often with offensive and populist rhetoric. Milanovic, who condemned Russia's aggression against Ukraine, has nonetheless criticised the West's military aid to Kyiv. That prompted the prime minister to label him a pro-Russian who is "destroying Croatia's credibility in NATO and the EU". Milanovic countered that he wanted to protect Croatia from being "dragged into war". "As long as I'm president no Croatian soldier will wage somebody else's wars," he said this month. Milanovic regularly pans Plenkovic and his HDZ party over systemic corruption, calling the premier a "serious threat to Croatia's democracy". "I'm a guarantee of the control of the octopus of corruption... headed by Andrej Plenkovic," he said during the campaign. For many, the election is a continuation of the longstanding feud between two powerful politicians. "This is still about the conflict between the prime minister and president," political analyst Zarko Puhovski told AFP. "All the rest are just incidental topics." Primorac, a 59-year-old physician and scientist returning to politics after 15 years, campaigned as a "unifier" promoting family values and patriotism. "Croatia needs unity, global positioning and a peaceful life," he told reporters after casting his ballot in Zagreb, adding that he would later attend a mass. Primorac repeatedly accused Milanovic of "disgracing Croatia", a claim that resonated with his supporters. ljv/bc

CommentsState health officials published a list of retailers in Los Angeles County that sold raw milk that has since been recalled after a retail sample of the product tested positive for bird flu virus. No one has reported illnesses from the lot of raw milk produced by Fresno-based dairy Raw Farm, the California Department of Public Health said. The dairy issued a voluntary recall of the lot — which was produced on Nov. 9 and has an expiration date of Nov. 27 — after Santa Clara health officials detected bird flu virus in a sample of raw milk purchased from a retail store. Officials with the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System then tested and verified the results. Retailers that sold the impacted quart and half gallon sized fluid raw milk in L.A. The County of Santa Clara Public Health Laboratory has been testing raw milk from retail stores as a “second line of consumer protection,” the state health department said. Mark McAfee, the owner of Raw Farm, said every lot that has been tested by the company and the California Department of Food and Agriculture showed negative results for bird flu virus. Raw Farm alerted retailers to remove products from the impacted lot from their shelves and said consumers can return the product at stores for a replacement or refund. The state Department of Public Health said it is warning consumers from drinking any potentially contaminated raw milk from the affected lot because of the ongoing spread of bird flu in dairy cows and poultry as well as some cases that have infected people . “This is a very contentious time,” for raw milk, McAfee said. “I just know that there’s a grandly elevated political environment with RFK Jr. now wanting more raw milk for people in America,” he said. President-elect Donald Trump has nominated anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.

In the introduction to his 2014 book Congo: The Epic History of a People, Belgian historian David van Reybrouck acknowledges this duality — let's call it the magical actuality of rivers — in relation to Central Africa's greatest river. The Congo, tells Van Reybrouck, has a resonance that far exceeds its 4 700km length. The basin where the river flows into the Atlantic Ocean is an enigma of colour: a yellowish, ochre, rusty broth, he writes, that stretches westward for 800km during the rainy months: "That is how a country begins: far before the coastline, thinned down with lots and lots of seawater." Curator Owen Martin was still living in Cape Town — a place of epic mountains but meh rivers — when he read Van Reybrouck's widely admired book. He found the connections the author made between hydrology and history insightful and banked them for a possible exhibition about rivers. It took river time and a change in address to ultimately realise that exhibition. Martin lives in Oslo, Norway, where he is a curator at the Astrup Fearnley Museum. Two years into his new role at the resourced private art museum with extensive holdings of blue-chip American and European artists, Martin has finally realised his dream exhibition. Its realisation is partly a story of revival. Hicham Berrada's installation Mesk-Ellil composed of terrariums housing jasmine Among South Africans, Martin is best known from his five-year tenure as the likeable chief curator of Cape Town's Norval Foundation. After joining Norval from Zeitz MOCAA in 2017, Martin excelled at organising solo exhibitions spotlighting major African talents, among them Kenyan painter Michael Armitage and Ghanaian installation artist Ibrahim Mahama. But the departure of Norval CEO Elana Brundyn in 2022 saddled Martin, a Canadian who came into the orbit of art collector Jochen Zeitz in 2011, with new...

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will launch its final mission for 2024 on December 30 with the PSLV C60/SPADEX Mission. The launch is scheduled at 9.58 p.m. from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The space agency, for the first time, will be attempting the Space Docking Experiment (SPADEX) mission which will demonstrate in-space docking using two small spacecraft. According to ISRO, SPADEX is designed to develop and demonstrate the technology needed for spacecraft rendezvous, docking, and undocking using two small satellites. “SPADEX will serve as a milestone in advancing India’s capabilities in space docking, a critical technology for future space missions, including satellite servicing, space station operations, and interplanetary missions,” the space agency said. The demonstration of this technology is essential for futuristic missions such as sending an Indian astronaut on the Moon, sample return from the Moon, the building and operation of the Indian Space Station. The PSLV-C60 will launch the two small spacecraft Chaser and Target also named SDX01 and SDX02 weighing about 220 kg each into a 470 km circular orbit at 55-degree inclination separately. SDX02 spacecraft will be the first to separate 15 minutes after the launch followed by SDX01 spacecraft a few seconds later. Incremental velocity “The demonstrated precision of the PSLV vehicle will be utilised to give a small relative velocity between the Target and Chaser spacecraft at the time of separation from the launch vehicle. This incremental velocity will allow the Target spacecraft to build a 10-20 km inter-satellite separation with respect to the Chaser within a day. At this point, the relative velocity between the Target will be compensated using the propulsion system of the Target spacecraft,” ISRO said. ISRO added that at the end of this drift arrest maneuver, the Target and Chaser will be in the same orbit with identical velocity but separated by about 20 km, known as Far Rendezvous. “With a similar strategy of introducing and then compensating for a small relative velocity between the two spacecraft, the Chaser will approach the Target with progressively reduced inter-satellite distances of 5 km, 1.5 km, 500 m, 225 m, 15 m, and 3 m, ultimately leading to the docking of the two spacecraft,” it added. The docking is expected to take place in the first week of January 2025. Twenty-four PS4-Orbital Experiment Module (POEM-4) payloads will be flown onboard the PSLV-C60 SPADEX mission.
