As surveillance images of the then-unidentified suspect in the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson circulated across the U.S., a San Francisco police officer recognized his face. The officer had been investigating a missing persons report filed by 26-year-old Luigi Mangione’s mother weeks before, and contacted the FBI on Dec. 5, the San Francisco Chronicle reported . The FBI confirmed the agency had received the information from San Francisco police in a statement to HuffPost on Friday. But Mangione was not named as a person of interest or suspect until he was recognized by an employee of a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on Dec. 9. “Has this name come up in your investigation at all?” NBC’s Savannah Guthrie asked NYPD officials on Dec. 10, pointing to the widely circulating surveillance photos. “This was not a name that was called in to us,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch replied. The FBI’s statement on Friday seemed to contradict that. “FBI New York conducted routine investigative activity and referred this and other leads to the New York City Police Department as part of our assistance to them in their investigation,” the statement said. The NYPD did not immediately respond to questions from HuffPost, and the FBI did not say when it passed on Mangione’s name to detectives. Mangione’s arrest shocked his friends , several of whom told news outlets or have written on social media that they hadn’t heard from him in months . Other news outlets have retreated behind paywalls. At HuffPost, we believe journalism should be free for everyone. An attorney for Mangione has said he has yet to see evidence that his client is the shooter. Simultaneously, external actors played a crucial role in the regime's downfall. Regional powers, such as Turkey and Saudi Arabia, provided support to opposition groups, both militarily and financially, further weakening the regime's grip on power. International condemnation and economic sanctions placed additional pressure on the Assad regime, isolating it on the global stage and exacerbating its internal vulnerabilities.

He was 89. Nemenzo’s daughter, Lian Nemenzo-Hernandez, announced his passing in a post on Facebook where the family recognized her father’s legacy as a radical educator and for leading modernization initiatives when he served as 18th president of the University of the Philippines (UP) from 1999 to 2005. “As the 18th President of the University of the Philippines, he left an indelible mark on the institution,” the family statement said. “He modernized the university and spearheaded initiatives that fostered critical thought and academic excellence.” Details of his memorial service will be announced soon, according to Nemenzo’s family and the UP System. Before assuming the leadership of the country’s premier state university, Nemenzo was first and foremost a political activist. “Dodong Nemenzo was a distinguished political scientist and Marxist scholar, known for his fearless views on Philippine society, politics and international affairs,” the family said. “A leading leftist intellectual, Dodong practiced his ideals—and was incarcerated for his actions during the martial law regime of Ferdinand E. Marcos. He advocated unwaveringly for social justice and reform. And played leadership roles in political organizations and social movements.” Nemenzo was married to Ana Maria “Princess” Ronquillo Nemenzo, a feminist and an antipoverty activist. Their three children—Fidel, Leonid and Lian—are all UP-educated with Fidel, a professor of mathematics, serving as the 11th chancellor of UP Diliman from 2020 to 2023. Most of Nemenzo’s career in the academe was spent in UP where he first joined as a research assistant before becoming a professor of political science in 1957. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in public administration in the state university and obtained his doctorate degree in political science from the University of Manchester. After his incarceration during the Marcos dictatorship, Nemenzo returned to UP where he served as dean of UP Diliman’s College of Arts and Sciences from 1976 to 1981, then as faculty regent from 1988 to 1989. From 1989 until 1992, he was designated as the third chancellor of UP Visayas before serveing as university president. “Nemenzo’s presidency came at a time of national optimism as the Philippines entered the 21st century,” the UP System said in its tribute to Nemenzo. His presidency in UP, it said, coincided with the centennial celebration of the Philippine Revolution, as well as during the “period of great anticipation, as both the country and the world looked forward to a fresh start following the economic crises of the 1990s.” The university acknowledged that Nemenzo’s administration faced several challenges, including deteriorating facilities, low faculty pay and even globalization pressures affecting UP’s academic standing. Nemenzo, according to the UP System, had always believed that a UP president should be an academic leader and not a businessman. He turned this belief into reality by focusing on the university’s modernization “to make it competitive in the new millennium,” it said. Nemenzo prioritized the upgrading of the university’s infrastructures by acquiring new equipment, improving libraries and laboratories, and promoting the use of technology, including internet connectivity across all UP campuses. It was also during Nemenzo’s term when the university saw the revival of the UP Newsletter and the launch of the Forum, a broadsheet for the entire UP community. The Forum was also a platform for Nemenzo where he regularly published his ideas and take on national and local issues, the UP System said. “Through his leadership, Francisco ‘Dodong’ Nemenzo Jr. left a lasting impact on the university, guiding it through modernization while preserving its activist spirit,” the UP System said. His family said: “Dodong Nemenzo’s life was a testament to the power of ideals and conviction. His contributions to academia and society will be remembered and celebrated by many.” READ: Former UP president, political scientist Francisco Nemenzo dies Education Secretary Sonny Angara, a UP alumnus, remembered Nemenzo as a “good friend” of his late father, former Senate President Edgardo Angara, who also served as UP president. The ability to conceal a small blade and cause harm surreptitiously raises doubts about the wisdom of this policy and its implications for overall passenger safety.Nativity Scenes Have Never Been Neutral
Erling Haaland missed a penalty as crisis-torn Manchester City failed to end their dismal run with a 1-1 draw against Everton, but it was United's travails and Liverpool's remarkable run that took centre-stage on Thursday. Arne Slot's side were shocked by Jordan Ayew's early strike at Anfield, but the leaders recovered their composure to equalise just before the interval through Cody Gakpo. England midfielder Jones marked his 100th top-flight appearance with the second goal soon after half-time. Mohamed Salah's 19th goal this term wrapped up Liverpool's 11th win in their last 13 games in all competitions. "We created enough, but because we went 1-0 down it was a game," Liverpool manager Slot said. "Then you saw how good we are and Leicester didn't want to come back into the game." Liverpool's comeback lifted them well clear of second-placed Chelsea, who were defeated 2-1 by Fulham earlier in the day. United suffered a third successive loss in all competitions to leave new boss Ruben Amorim with five defeats in his first 10 games. Fernandes was dismissed two minutes into the second half at Molineux for a second bookable offence. United's 10 men cracked in the 58th minute when Matheus Cunha's corner went straight in as goalkeeper Andre Onana flapped under pressure. Hwang Hee-chan compounded Amorim's misery when he tapped in with just seconds left. Losing to fourth-bottom Wolves was another bitter blow for United, who endured a humiliating 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth at Old Trafford last weekend after losing 4-3 in the League Cup at Tottenham. With his team marooned in 14th place -- just eight points above the relegation zone -- Amorim's woes might not be over, with United facing in-form Newcastle on Monday before travelling to Liverpool in their first game of 2025. "It's so tough to win games in this league with 11 men. With 10 men, it's more difficult," Amorim said. Champions Manchester City have just one victory in their last 13 games in all competitions as their Christmas schedule started in disappointing fashion. Bernardo Silva put City in front early on before Iliman Ndiaye salvaged a point for Everton. Seven minutes into the second half, Haaland had the chance to end his longest goal drought at the Etihad but Jordan Pickford denied him. City are languishing in seventh place and sit five points adrift of the top four, with their astonishing decline showing no sign of ending. "Of course we need results and we didn't get it. The team played really good again in all departments and unfortunately could not win," said City boss Pep Guardiola. At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea were stunned by Fulham's late fightback in a dramatic west London derby. It was Chelsea's first home defeat against Fulham since 1979. Cole Palmer put Chelsea ahead after 16 minutes, the England forward drilling home from the edge of the area after weaving through the Fulham defence in dazzling style. But Fulham levelled with eight minutes left when Harry Wilson nodded in from close range. There was worse to come for the Blues when Rodrigo Muniz completed the turnaround in the 95th minute. Nottingham Forest climbed to third place after a 1-0 win against sputtering Tottenham at the City Ground. Forest's fourth successive win was sweet revenge for boss Nuno Espirito Santo, whose former club Tottenham had Djed Spence sent off in the closing moments for a second booking. Tottenham are stuck in 11th as the pressure mounts on boss Ange Postecoglou. Newcastle swatted aside 10-man Aston Villa 3-0, moving up to fifth place after winning three consecutive league games for the first time since 2023. Jarrod Bowen's 59th-minute goal gave West Ham a 1-0 win at bottom of the table Southampton after the visitors saw Guido Rodriguez's red card overturned by VAR. It was a frustrating start for new Saints boss Ivan Juric, who has replaced the sacked Russell Martin. Bournemouth and Crystal Palace shared a goalless draw at the Vitality Stadium. smg/nf
