‘We’re the snooker players of the 80s’, says Aspinall as he thanks Luke Littler for turning darts stars into celebritiesIf you are a parent or a grandparent, then you probably have heard the old school saying, “A hard head makes a soft behind," meaning if you don’t listen and learn from your parents advice, you will suffer the consequences. I wish I had a dollar for every time I advised my now grown kids to just listen to my advice. The common response from half-hearted youth is, “I heard you!" My follow up is, “I know you heard me, but you are not listening. There is a difference!” I maintain and truly believe that today’s youth are their own worst enemy by making ill-advised decisions. The tendency of youths to disregard parental advice often leads to unnecessary complications in their lives. It's a familiar narrative: Parents, drawing from a wealth of personal experience and hard-earned lessons, offer guidance they believe will shield their offspring from hardship. Yet, in many households across the nation, this wisdom is met with skepticism or outright dismissal. Why does this happen, and what are the consequences? To understand why young people often ignore their parents' advice, one must first recognize the inherent generation gap. Social media exposes youths to diverse opinions and lifestyles, often at odds with traditional parental views. This overexposure of misinformation often oppresses or flat out silences the voice of the parents. Young people tend to place great value on the experiences and opinions of their peers, sometimes more than on parental guidance. This peer influence can be so strong that it overrides any parental counsel, regardless of its wisdom or intent. In a world where being "trendy" or "woke" is crucial, the fear of social exclusion can propel youths toward decisions their parents would never advocate. Parents may advise their children to pursue stable career paths, valuing security and long-term benefits, while the youths may be drawn to more creative or unconventional routes. The gig economy, entrepreneurship and digital careers attract young people with promises of autonomy and passion-driven work. Unfortunately, without a solid plan or experience, these ventures can lead to financial instability and stress. Relationships, too, are a hotbed of conflicting advice. Parents, often harboring traditional values, may advocate for a certain etiquette or caution against rushing into commitments. Yet, young people, motivated by the dynamics of modern dating and their peers' behaviors, might choose to disregard this well-intentioned advice, potentially leading to heartbreaks and regrets. Ignoring parental advice can lead to a range of problems. Financial struggles, mental health issues and relationship conflicts are just a few repercussions. Without the guidance of experienced elders, youths can find themselves entangled in avoidable problems, learning painful lessons that could have been mitigated or avoided altogether. While there is no simple solution to bridging the generational divide, fostering open communication can create a middle ground. Parents should strive to understand the cultural and technological landscape that their children are navigating. By showing a willingness to learn and adapt, parents can offer guidance that resonates with the modern realities youths face. While it is natural to forge one's path, acknowledging that parents often speak from a place of love and concern can lead to more balanced decision-making. Seeking advice does not equate to losing autonomy; rather, it enriches one's perspective. Encouraging a dialogue where both parties share and respect differing viewpoints can lead to more informed choices. While it is evident that ignoring parental advice can lead to additional challenges for young people, it is vital to look at the root causes and work toward solutions that embrace change while respecting age-old wisdom. By cultivating an environment of mutual respect and understanding, youths can navigate their lives more effectively and safely. As parents and youth workers with a genuine care and concern for the well-being of youth, including our own, we are limited in what we can do to guide them into healthy, successful and responsible adults. All we can do is our very best to plant a seed of wisdom and righteousness in them and pray that it becomes fruitful and grows. A secret millionaire in the I'm a Celebrity camp has been unveiled, earning nearly as much as Coleen Rooney . The WAG is said to have received a whopping £1.5million for her appearance on the popular ITV programme. It's even been suggested that she could easily surpass her footballer husband Wayne's estimated lifetime earnings of £80million. Coleen, 38, has made significant investments in a company now listed on the Stock Exchange for £350million. However, she isn't the only celebrity in camp with impressive earnings outside the show. The camp was recently shaken up with the arrival of Love Island beauty Maura Higgins and author Reverend Richard Coles. But Richard has already reaped the rewards of being the nation's favourite TV vicar. Rev Coles was part of the 80s band The Communards as well as Bronski Beat. He ranks among the highest paid stars due to his successful TV career on shows like Strictly Come Dancing , Celebrity MasterChef, Songs Of Praise and Newsnight Review. Richard has also appeared on Have I Got News For You? and QI. He has worked in radio and has written a series of successful crime novels as well as his autobiography. According to the Sun, Richard's company Mistramark Ltd paid £179,047 in corporation tax over 2022 and 2023. At the time, the rate was 19%, indicating the company made around £940k profit. In the run-up to his adventure Down Under, Richard revealed to the Mirror his unconventional jungle prep, involving a 5000-calorie daily intake on a cruise and shunning 'triggering' nature documentaries about Australia's deadly creatures. The celebrity quipped: "I would like to say that I've been lowering my calorie intake to prepare for that, but that's not worked out so far. I've been trying not to look at nature programs about the horrors of Australia." He confessed his concerns about becoming public enemy number one in camp due to his snoring habits, saying, "everybody wanting to kill me because I keep them awake at night." Highlighting another apprehension, he added: "I am also worried about finding a fear I didn't know I had yet and going to pieces on television in front of a koala or wombat or something." Yet despite his fears, Richard is eager to make history as the first vicar to brave the jungle, noting the historical context with a touch of humour: "I don't think there are many precedents for this, although, vicars have been going into jungles for years and years and years as missionaries." When it comes to potential irritants, he shared with us: "Sniffing. I'm also not naturally a patient person. Also I lived in the monastery for two years." Drawing on past experiences of communal living, he continued: "So I know what it's like to be locked in with people you didn't choose to be with. So I've got some resilience. Except there wasn't food deprivation, instead there was a lot of cake in the monastery. So I don't know what it will be like."
While women will fill a record number of state legislative seats in 2025, the overall uptick will be slight, filling just over third of legislative seats. Races in some states are still being called. "We certainly would like to see a faster rate of change and more significant increases in each election cycle to get us to a place where parity in state legislatures is less novel and more normal," said Kelly Dittmar, director of research at the CAWP, which is a unit of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University. As of Wednesday, at least 2,450 women will serve in state legislatures, representing 33.2% of the seats nationwide. The previous record was set in 2024 with 2,431 women, according to the CAWP. The number of Republican women, at least 851, will break the previous record of 815 state lawmakers set in 2024. "But still, Republican women are very underrepresented compared to Democratic women," Debbie Walsh, director of the CAWP, said. By the most recent count, 19 states will have increased the number of women in their state legislatures, according to the CAWP. The most notable increases were in New Mexico and Colorado, where women will for the first time make up a majority of lawmakers. In New Mexico, voters sent an 11 additional women to the chambers. Colorado previously attained gender parity in 2023 and is set to tip over to a slight female majority in the upcoming year. The states follow Nevada, which was the first in the country to see a female majority in the legislature following elections in 2018. Next year, women will make up almost 62% of state lawmakers in Nevada, far exceeding parity. Women in California's Senate will make up the chamber's majority for the first time in 2025 as well. Women also made notable gains in South Dakota, increasing its number by at least nine. At least thirteen states emerged from the election with fewer female lawmakers than before, with the most significant loss occurring in South Carolina. This year, the only three Republican women in the South Carolina Senate lost their primaries after they stopped a total abortion ban from passing. Next year, only two women, who are Democrats, will be in the 46-member Senate. No other state in the country will have fewer women in its upper chamber, according to the CAWP. Women make up 55% of the state's registered voters. Half the members in the GOP dominated state were elected in 2012 or before, so it will likely be the 2040s before any Republican woman elected in the future can rise to leadership or a committee chairmanship in the chamber, which doles out leadership positions based on seniority. A net loss of five women in the legislature means they will make up only about 13% of South Carolina's lawmakers, making the state the second lowest in the country for female representation. Only West Virginia has a smaller proportion of women in the legislature. West Virginia stands to lose one more women from its legislative ranks, furthering its representation problem in the legislature where women will make up just 11% of lawmakers. Many women, lawmakers and experts say that women's voices are needed in discussions on policy, especially at a time when state government is at its most powerful in decades. Walsh, director of the CAWP, said the new changes expected from the Trump administration will turn even more policy and regulation to the states. The experiences and perspectives women offer will be increasingly needed, she said, especially on topics related to reproductive rights, healthcare, education and childcare. "The states may have to pick up where the federal government may, in fact, be walking away," Walsh said. "And so who serves in those institutions is more important now than ever."Stifel Financial Corp trimmed its holdings in shares of Rogers Co. UFC cage side announcer Charly Arnolt has hit out at "feminists and liberals" as she took aim at the "left-wing media" following Kylie Kelce's breakout success with her podcasting debut. The media personality and wife of NFL legend Jason Kelce topped the charts after the release of the maiden episode of her Not Gonna Lie series. The show proved immensely popular with listeners after it premiered on Thursday, Dec. 5, with the 32-year-old having addressed topics including parenthood and fame on her inaugural release. With husband Jason having found success as a podcast co-host alongside brother Travis , this is the family's latest foray into the world of broadcasting. Having managed to topple the Joe Rogan Experience in the charts this week , debate has ensued over whether that show now has a major rival on its hands moving forward. However, it appears that former ESPN reporter Arnolt has been left irked by the comparisons, as she criticised the "left-wing media" after Kelce was hailed for "dethroning" Rogan's show. Ian Machado Garry shows his true colors in emotional post-fight UFC 310 press conference Butterbean told he's one of the most overrated boxers of all time During a rant on her own OutKick show, Arnolt started by offering up praise towards Kelce after the success of her debut outing on the mic. She said: "I know the hype among the Swifties is at an all-time high. "Why? Because Kylie Kelce's debut episode of a podcast has dropped... and great news for her, I'm so happy for her - to have a new podcast is a massive accomplishment. But there is a very over-zealous type of reaction that is taking over the internet. And I would say it is just going a little bit overboard." "Take a look, exhibit A, here is what people are saying after Kylie's podcast has done such tremendous numbers upon her debut episode," she continued, before commenting on the comparisons with Rogan's show. "People are saying that because it is No 1 on Spotify, above The Joe Rogan Experience, that she has now 'dethroned' Rogan in the podcast world. "Now listen, yes - her debut episode had killer numbers. And it is reported to have beaten out Joe Rogan's most recent episode. But this is just his most recent episode. It also beat out Crime Junkie, which I happen to be a massive fan of, and the New York Times' The Daily, consistently in the top three of podcasts." Revealing her disdain towards the nature of the coverage by unspecified outlets after Rogan's show was relegated to second place in the charts, she said: "Why are the headlines - if you beat Crime Junkie and the New York Times - all about dethroning Joe Rogan? Because we know the left hates Joe Rogan. This is easy to solve. DON'T MISS Dale Earnhardt Jr makes feelings clear on ex-NASCAR rival Tony Stewart Jeff Gordon made brutally honest admission to Rick Hendrick over NASCAR decline Joe Rogan and Khabib Nurmagomedov agree on next obvious megafight after UFC 310 'But all of this aside, is she on the level of Joe Rogan, who has been podcasting brilliantly for years and years? Come on. No chance. Are her guests going to compare to President-Elect Donald Trump ? Or Elon Musk ? No way. In a parting shot towards her apparent political adversaries, Arnolt added: "The feminists and liberals on the left are having a field day because of her topping him in this one week. They are trying to convince us Joe Rogan is no longer relevant because of Kylie Kelce stepping into the podcast space."CNBC Daily Open: Small- and mid-caps stole the limelight last week
NoneIt’s time for LA Rams to make a call to franchise’s best ever player to see if he will return, says NFL expertKnives” is slang for surgeons, so I’m referring to a meeting, conference, or congress of surgeons. I recently attended an Asian congress in cardiothoracic surgery—surgery of the heart and lungs—in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province in central China. Wuhan, the political and manufacturing hub of China, is home to over 11 million people and is China’s seventh most-populous city. Historically, Wuhan was the headquarters of the Wuchang uprising which ended China’s last imperial dynasty in 1911. It was thrust into international consciousness when a citywide lockdown was imposed in January 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Wuhan has been hosting international meetings to make the city more open and inclusive, and to send out signals of its international competitiveness with a resilient economy. When I visited the 1,000-bed Huoshenshan (meaning Fire God Mountain) hospital, built in a record 10 days by 7,000 workers during the early days of the pandemic, I was told that it had been converted into a nursing facility. This temporary hospital closed on April 15, 2020, after a little over two months in operation as community transmission had stopped in China. I also learned that the seafood market where the pandemic supposedly started was permanently closed. Medicine in China has progressed from the era of barefoot doctors in rural Chinese villages in the 1970s, to surgical feats like the world’s first transplant of a genetically altered pig liver into a human, and the world’s first double-lung transplant for end-stage lung disease brought about by COVID-19. China has two of the world’s largest lung transplant programs, one in Wuxi People’s Hospital in Jiangsu province, and another in the 155-year-old Second Affiliated Hospital of the Zhejiang University School of Medicine in Hangzhou. While China is catching up with the West, this progress has been shadowed by controversy. The elephant in the room is, of course, the use of organs from executed prisoners, which made China a pariah in the international transplant community. Scientific articles were denied publication in peer-reviewed medical journals, and Chinese transplant doctors had difficulty presenting their work in international medical conferences. To address this, Chinese authorities came up with the Hangzhou Resolution of October 2013, which resolved to end “donation by execution” and promote ethical and internationally recognized practices of organ donation and transplantation. The resolution also called for transparency in organ donation through a computerized waitlist of potential transplant recipients regardless of gender, social status, and religious beliefs. Furthermore, it rejects foreign patients seeking to undergo transplantation in China. During the last 40 years, China was able to lift 800 million people out of poverty, with health care and medical services also improving in its wake. In big urban hospitals and universities, small armies of Ph.D.s work in narrow fields of basic medical sciences, including research in cancer biology and genetics. This leads us to the question: Why has China not produced another Nobel Prize laureate in medicine or physiology? (China has only one in this category). That is another matter altogether. Back to why surgeons are called “knives,” a reference to the scalpel, one of the earliest surgical instruments that evolved from flint or volcanic glass cutting implements during the Stone Age, to its present modern version of tempered steel. “He who wishes to be a surgeon should go to war,” wrote the Greek physician Hippocrates in the 4th century BC. During the Middle Ages in Europe, barber surgeons accompanied soldiers into battle and took care of the injured. The barber’s pole, with a helix of red and white, and sometimes blue, dates back to the Middle Ages: red representing blood, and white symbolizing the bandages used to staunch bleeding. Wars taught early surgeons surgical techniques like amputations and wound closure. With the invention of gunpowder in China, surgeons learned a whole new way of dealing with traumatic gunshot injuries. In fact, the modern ambulance was an innovation of a surgeon in Napoleon’s army: the so-called “flying ambulances” to rapidly transport injured soldiers for treatment, thereby improving the organization of field hospitals, the forerunner of the modern mobile army hospital units. Surgeons are descendants of guilds, or medieval association of craftsmen or barber-surgeons and merchants in the pursuit of a common goal. AP Trending SummaryBrief at 5:24 p.m. ESTChiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall Despite the geopolitical noise created by threats of invasion, Taiwan remains as an attractive tourist destination for Filipinos. And that charm comes from Taiwan’s overall efforts to reshape its tourism industry by luring more holiday-makers from Southeast Asia, who are now coming to the island in numbers close to the years before pandemic lockdowns kept people in their homes. Latest data from the Taiwan Tourism Administration show that total international arrivals in Taiwan had grown by 27.14 percent year-on-year in the first nine months of 2024 to 5.5 million. The figure, however, is still below the 8.8 million arrivals recorded during the same period in 2019, or before the pandemic. But zooming in, travelers from Southeast Asia had jumped by 10.5 percent in the January to September period to 1.68 million, already close to pre-COVID-19 level. Notably, Filipinos cornered the largest share of Southeast Asian visitors to the island after clocking in a 38.77-percent growth to 338,386—almost hitting the number recorded in the same nine-month period in 2019. “Taiwan is surrounded by mountains and seas, with rich and diverse natural landscapes. With the beautiful scenery, tourists can always find their inner peace by immersing themselves with the tranquility of Taiwan,” Cindy Chen, director of the Tourism Administration, tells the Inquirer in an interview during a familiarization tour on the island’s capital of Taipei. “With such reasons, tourists are eager to revisit Taiwan and discover its charm through different aspects,” Chen adds. Taipei 101 skyscraper This, in turn, is helping Taiwan’s economy that—albeit technology-focused and export-oriented—has a vibrant tourism sector that generates jobs for many people working in places like the famous night markets. ”Whether in big cities or small towns, from street food to fine dining, there are plenty of choices to satisfy different needs,” Chen says. As it is, Southeast Asian travelers are picking up the slack from the still weak number of Chinese visitors, who are now being outnumbered by travelers from the Philippines alone. Official data show that unlike in the past years when mainland China was the top source of international arrivals to Taiwan, the share of Chinese visitors to total foreign travelers to the island has shrunk to just around 5 percent. The Tourism Administration reports that only 293,235 Chinese from the mainland visited the island in the first nine months of 2024, coinciding with rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait. In early June, Taipei visitors can witness the annual Dragon Boat Festival. It thus makes perfect sense that Taiwan now sees the Philippines as an important market. Filipinos currently enjoy visa-free entry to Taiwan for up to 14 days. At the same time, Taiwan is the closest neighbor of the Philippines in the north, with major airlines offering flights between the two destinations. And Filipinos are making the most out of their visits. According to the latest data from the Tourism Administration, Filipinos stayed for an average of 6.31 nights in Taiwan—mostly for leisure—during the January to September period, albeit the shortest among Southeast Asian visitors. Night markets such as the most famous one in Shilin District And if you are planning a trip to Taiwan, Chen says holidaymakers from the Philippines may time their visit during the Dragon Boat Festival, which is generally held in early June around the summer solstice according to the Chinese lunar calendar. This year, the Taipei International Dragon Boat Championships held last June 8 to 10 at the picturesque Dajia Riverside Park in Zhongshan District in Taipei was a spectacular showcase of modern cityscape, riverside development and rich tradition that attracted skilled teams of rowers from Taiwan and around the globe. There are more customs for tourists to experience during the holiday,” Chen says.Gaetz’ Bad Boy image finally catches up with him
