First downs and second guesses: It feels like the last time I went to a bowl game, Bob Devaney and Bear Bryant were flipping a coin to see who would go to the Orange and Sugar Bowls. All signs point to the Nebraska-Iowa winner on Friday heading to the ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa, Fla. That’s the bowl speculation. Man, I’ve missed it. The ReliaQuest is the former Outback Bowl, which has never had Nebraska. I always heard that the Outback Bowl served steaks in the press box. These guys will make sure your laptop doesn’t get hacked. It’s a good matchup, with the Big Ten going against the SEC. Which is why Music City would be my preference for a spot if NU doesn’t win on Friday. Some of the potential SEC teams I’ve seen in Nashville are LSU, Oklahoma, Missouri, Ole Miss and Texas A&M. The Huskers against any of them would be a dream matchup. Of course, the last bowl game Nebraska played in was the Music City Bowl, losing to Tennessee in 2016. My memory of that week was hitting the music honky-tonks on Broadway Street and realizing that none of them had TV’s. You were there to listen to music. What a concept. I’ll be happy with any bowl. First-time-in-a-long time bowlers can’t be choosers. Nebraska’s name pops up in several different bowl projections. There’s the Pinstripe Bowl (USA Today) vs. Pitt and vs. Georgia Tech (ESPN), the Duke’s Bowl in Charlotte vs. Syracuse (Action Network) and vs. Georgia Tech (ESPN), Nebraska vs. Texas Tech in the Rate (Phoenix) Bowl and in the Music City Bowl vs. LSU (247Sports). The Huskers will be happy to play in any of them. A good thing about the Duke’s is a Jan. 3 date. But that might be an awkward fit with coach Matt Rhule heading back to the city and stadium where he was fired two years ago. That storyline would dominate the week. Whatever happens, perfect. It’s just nice to be speculating again. I have to admit, the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl looks intriguing. Is there a trophy? One day, someone very smart will come up with an NIL Bowl, which will pay the players involved. That’s sort of what Creighton is doing this week, participating in the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas. The tourney will put $1 million into the CU Bird Club collective. Meanwhile, Coach Greg McDermott will earn his money this week and beyond, until point guard Steven Ashworth recovers fully from an ankle injury suffered against Nebraska. Wonder if Mac will have a committee approach to running the offense, including Pop Isaacs and freshman Ty Davis. Fred Hoiberg said on Monday that he has used “tough coaching” with his team twice in the last week — the day after the loss to St. Mary’s and again on Sunday to make sure his Huskers have come down from their win over Creighton. When a coach gets on his team like that, he knows they can handle it. That’s interesting because a good portion of this year’s NU team is new. Hoiberg is obviously going after an older, tougher-mindset kind of player in the portal. It works. Wow, how cool will it be to have Lindsay Krause, Kendra Wait and Ally Batenhorst all on the Omaha Supernovas this season? And Merritt Beason, the No. 1 overall pick to Atlanta in the Pro Volleyball Federation Draft, and Norah Sis, the overall No. 3 pick to Orlando, coming back to Omaha to play. I wonder how John Cook and Kirsten Bernthal Booth feel about having a pro draft in the middle of the season, with the NCAA tournament next week? I’m guessing the players will be focused. But what if the NFL Draft was now? And the NBA Draft was in February? All the talk this season about Nebraska Class A football being in trouble, and yet I couldn’t wait for the Westside-Millard South game on Monday night. It seems to me that there have always been two or three teams better than everyone else. When I arrived here in 1991, it was Omaha Creighton Prep and Lincoln Southeast. Then it was Prep and Millard North. And Millard West. And Omaha North. Westside. Gretna. The difference is the disparity between the top and the middle of Class A is now widening. You see more blowout games. You didn’t used to see those. The transfer issue is a factor, sure. So is OPS shutting down in 2020. And some new schools in districts where the population (and talent) in the district split into different schools. Based on conversations with several coaches, I would add specialization to the list. A lot of football programs have lost kids to playing other sports, like baseball and basketball, full-time. I still love the Friday Night lights, the marching bands, the student sections, all that. And, marquee matchups at state. There’s still a lot of good things going on. Should there be a Nebraska-Creighton basketball traveling trophy? I can’t think of one. But the teams should wear blue and red every year. Brent crude futures settled at $73.58, rising 95 cents, or 1.3%. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures settled at $70.10, rising 86 cents, or 1.2%. FGE analysts said they expect the benchmark prices will fluctuate around current levels in the near term “as activity in the paper markets decreases during the holiday season and market participants stay on the sidelines until they get a clearer view of 2024 and 2025 global oil balances.” Supply and demand changes in December have been supportive of their current less-bearish view so far, the FGE analysts said in a note. “Given how short the paper market is on positioning, any supply disruption could lead to upward spikes in structure,” they added. Some analysts also pointed to signs of greater oil demand over the next few months. “The year is ending with the consensus from major agencies over long 2025 liquids balances starting to break down,” Neil Crosby, Sparta Commodities’ assistant vice president of oil analytics, said in a note. “The EIA’s short-term energy outlook recently shifted their 2025 liquids to a draw, despite continuing to bring back some OPEC+ barrels next year,” Crosby said. Gov. Kathy Hochul has asked the Department of Homeland Security to reverse course and fully staff the northern border with Canada, after the department announced last month it was cutting operating hours at four ports of entry. RAISED CONCERNS In a letter to Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas dated Nov. 27, Hochul said the decision to put four of New York’s border crossings with Canada on twelve- and sixteen-hour schedules, a reduction from the usual 24-hour operations, is a mistake. “These changes are wholly inconsistent with what is needed now in this state,” she wrote. “I have previously raised my concerns in meetings with the Biden-Harris Administration, and write to once again request the Department of Homeland Security immediately direct staffing and resources to expand enforcement activities along the U.S.-Canada border. In light of this week’s actions, I ask you to immediately reverse the decision to suspend 24/7 staffing along our northern border at critical locations.” The letter was first reported by the Albany Times-Union. POPULAR ROUTE In it, Hochul said the trend of increasing numbers of attempts to cross the border illegally should warrant a firmer response and said the historically relaxed policies around northern border security are partially to blame. “Long-standing immigration policies of the U.S. and Canada have contributed to the northern border becoming an increasingly popular route for non-citizens seeking entry into the U.S., policies which New York does not control,” she wrote. She cited Border Patrol statistics, showing that there were nearly 19,000 reported encounters with people illegally crossing at some point along the entire northern border in August of this year, compared to 4,500 in August of 2021. The region with the sharpest increase in encounters along the border is the Swanton Sector, covering St. Lawrence County east to New Hampshire, while also hosting one of the smallest complements of Border Patrol agents. “As of early 2024, the Swanton Sector has funding for 338 Border Patrol agents, with only 260 filled, but this area of the border requires 728 agents to carry out sufficient enforcement for elevated levels of border crossings,” she wrote. She warned that illegal crossings come with steep risks for those attempting it. In upstate New York and New England, a wintertime or even early spring crossing comes with the risk of losing the way, freezing to death, or drowning. In a much-publicized case from March 2023, an attempt to smuggle a group of Indian and Romanian nationals into the U.S. through the Akwesasne, St. Regis Mohawk lands between Ontario and St. Lawrence County, resulted in nine drowning deaths. Both the U.S. and Canada have moved to charge those involved in the human smuggling operation. GREATER RESOURCES Hochul said she is doing what she can at her level to address the issue—directing $5 million from the federal State Homeland Security Program to enhance state-level security at border crossings. The state Division of Criminal Justice Services is rolling out a broader license plate reader network along border roads, and the State Police are investing in increased staffing and technology, including drone-based surveillance and handheld x-ray machines to examine cargo. She also said she was disappointed that the bipartisan border legislation proposed earlier this year, which would have directed more federal resources to northern border enforcement among other changes to immigration and border security policies, did not pass. “Had it passed, states like New York would have greater resources to handle the influx of migrants nationwide,” she said. “Despite it not passing, New York still needs to expand enforcement at the northern border today.” A change in border policies is likely to come with the new Presidential administration in January, with border policies to be led by West Carthage native and recent Jefferson County resident Thomas D.
