For “Hysteria!” actresses Anna Camp and Julie Bowen, horror is harder than comedy. “Horror is really hard actually because there is a fine line you have to walk; you have to make it feel grounded and you’re put in these extreme circumstances: You’re being possessed or pulled through the air, there’s nothing you can do to relate to that,” explained Camp of “Pitch Perfect” fame. “With comedy, you can have a relatable situation and go, ‘I’ve been in situations like that.’ There’s nothing you can compare (horror) to, so you have to use your imagination. I find it harder. Your imagination goes home with you at the end of the day. You’re still thinking crazy thoughts.” Bowen, best known for playing Claire Dunphy on “Modern Family,” agreed. “Comedy’s pretty binary because it’s like either you can make people laugh or you don’t. I can’t watch horror. I’m terrified, terrified! I am the easiest scare in the world, so as far as doing (horror), I want to make it as real as possible. It was hard because I had to be really, really crazy. There were times when I’d get back to my hotel room at 3 a.m., I didn’t want to be alone in my head,” said Bowen, laughing. Camp, Bowen, Royal Oak native Bruce Campbell (“Evil Dead”), showrunner David A. Goodman (“Futurama”), and Ypsilanti native/creator Matthew Scott Kane (“American Horror Story”) were promoting “Hysteria!” at the New York Comic Con in October. The horror series is streaming on Peacock. Set in the fictional Michigan town of Happy Hollow, the first episode of “Hysteria” begins with a popular quarterback’s disappearance and a pentagram is discovered on a garage door. As a result, rumors of the occult and satanic influence run rampant through the town. A trio of outcasts in a heavy metal band called Dethkrunch exploit this by rebranding themselves as a satanic metal band, which leads to them becoming the targets of the town’s witch hunt. “Something on my mind a lot in 2019 was we’re living in this post-factual age with social media. It seemed like decades and decades ago, you could trust the news. Now everything is in question. When lies end up getting disseminated as truth, that starts to warp people’s version of reality. Suddenly, they’re living in a world other people are not. That was going on in the world I was living in and I very quickly connected it to the 1980s satanic panic. It’s not really that different because people were saying Ozzy Osbourne, Jason Voorhees (of ‘Friday the 13th’), and the Smurfs were going to turn your kids into satanists and kill you in your sleep. That didn’t happen. It wasn’t true, but so many people got worked up into such a fervor over it, bad things happened. ... It was smoke without fire,” Kane said. “Disinformation is not new,” Campbell said. “Disinformation will tear a town apart.” Campbell portrays Happy Hollow Police Chief Ben Dandridge. “This guy’s a reasonable cop; he’s a rational person who doesn’t treat the teenagers like they’re idiots. It’s all very refreshing,” he said. “I want to play that guy again. I want cops to be that guy. I’m playing the cop (that) cops need to be. That’s my whole motivation for playing this guy: How would you like cops to be, especially the guy in charge, the chief of police? They’re lucky to have Chief Dandridge.” “It was truly an exciting moment when Bruce signed on,” Goodman said. By the end of the first episode, a supernatural phenomenon happens to Linda Campbell, played by Bowen. “Linda seems like one thing, then you realize she’s bananas. She’s either bananas or she’s possessed. Either way, it’s a complicated thing to play,” Bowen said. “With Julie, you can have your cake and eat it too,” Kane said. “She’s this fun, quirky mom. ... As the episode goes on, she’s pulled deeper into this thing and crazy stuff starts happening. That final act of the first episode was my favorite moment with her because this announced that this is not Claire Dunphy. We’re not doing that again; we’re pushing her as a performer. “Julie was so excited about doing stunts. She told us on many occasions she’s very sturdy and can take it. The same goes for Bruce and for Anna. We didn’t ask anyone to give us a flavor of the thing they did before. We cast people we loved so much (in their famous projects) that we wanted to give them the opportunity to do the exact opposite.” Added Bowen: “I got this script and was like, ‘Oh great. She’s a mom. How fun.’ I love moms. I’m a mom, but I felt this was not worth flying out of town to Georgia and being away from my kids. Then I got to the end of the pilot and was like, ‘She’s crazy!’ Is she possessed? There’s a lot more questions. It’s fun to just stretch again and do things I haven’t done in a while, which I found really exciting.” Kane said he felt lucky Bowen signed on at the beginning. “She was the first adult actor to sign on. That gave us such credibility to have a two-time Emmy-winning actor leading this show. Suddenly, it goes from this script from a relatively unknown writer into the new Julie Bowen show,” he said. It was the quality of the writing that attracted Camp, Bowen and Campbell to “Hysteria!” “I loved the script; it was incredibly well-written. It was immersed in the time period. It was such a good coming-of-age story, too — the feeling of being in high school again, being in the 1980s,” Camp said. “I talked to Matt who said my character (Tracy) was incredibly pivotal to the series and we’ll learn about why she is the way she is. So I was like, ‘I’d love to do this!’” For Campbell, the writing is everything. “A lot of times, I’ll get a script that could make the words interchangeable with every other character because the writing is very bland and just doesn’t have the detail you need. This was different. Every character was pretty distinct and pretty well-drawn,” he said. “It’s quality. It’s not a (expletive) show. It’s a real show that’s playing around with interesting themes. A lot of it is still relevant to this day.” “Hysteria!” has other Michigan connections, including University of Michigan alumnus Jonathan Goldstein (“Spider-Man: Homecoming”) and Dondero High School alumnus Jordan Vogt-Roberts (“Kong: Skull Island”), who both serve as executive producers. Kane explained why he set “Hysteria!” in Michigan. “You write what you know. I grew up in Ypsilanti, so that had a lot to do with it. More importantly, when you’re in a small town in the Midwest — somewhere like Michigan — these things don’t ever happen and word spreads fast and paranoia spreads quickly and (everything’s) blown out of proportion and takes up a lot of people’s minds,” he said. “Whether or not something is real doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter if there are people willing to believe it does and willing it into the world. What does it matter if it’s objectively real or living rent-free in someone’s head?”

The 2:10 p.m. showing for Disney’s newly released "Moana 2" last Sunday was only a few minutes into the previews at Medford’s Tinseltown when Central Point resident Danny Moreno shifted his focus from enjoying a movie with his wife and grandson to responding to a cry for help. Moreno, a retired fire captain from North Carolina, rushed to the aid of 6-year-old Grants Pass resident Mosaia Hannah. The girl, who suffers from a heart condition called SVT, had gone suddenly unconscious and went face down on the theater floor. The condition causes a sudden fluctuation in heart rate. “They were doing previews of other movies of all the other movies they usually do. It had just started into it. We were at the bottom, towards the first step. All of a sudden we hear, ‘Does anybody here know CPR?’” Moreno told the Rogue Valley Times last week. With 30-plus years of fire and EMS experience, Morena found himself running up the flight of theater steps without taking time to process what might be happening. “Being who I am with fire and EMS experience, I jumped up and ran there to try to help,” he said. The girl, known as “Mosie” to friends and family, had visited the Medford theater last Sunday to watch the "Moana" sequel as a group. Mosie was unresponsive, with her lips turning blue, when Moreno reached her side. The girl’s mom, Allison Hannah, said she and a group of friends had been planning for weeks to get together with their kids to watch the movie. The 6-year-old had a medical emergency and was rescued by retired fire captain Danny Moreno of Central Point. “We keep an eye on the SVT, it makes her sometimes have a rapid heartbeat. When it beats too fast, she’s usually really good about communicating that it’s happening. She didn’t say anything this time,” said the mom. “We got all our snacks and our popcorn, took some pictures of the kids and walked into the theater. We had six kids with us, so I was putting everyone in their seat and heard a friend behind me say, ‘Oh, Mosie, watch out, you’re taking up the walkway.’ I turned around and my daughter was lying face down on the ground.” Hannah said the same thing happened three years ago, when her daughter’s heart began to race, and she went suddenly unconscious. “We didn’t even know she had a heart condition that time. What saved her life that time was a sheriff who responded within three minutes,” Hannah added. Even faster than the 911 call — this time — was the retired fire captain just a few rows away. Hannah and one of her friends had attempted some CPR compressions but were concerned at the lack of response, save for a tiny cough. “When our other friend yelled out, ‘Does anybody know CPR?’ People started rushing towards us.” Hannah said Moreno leaped over several rows of seats to reach her daughter. “I remember he just said, ‘I know what to do. It’s OK.’ I grabbed my daughter and shoved her into his arms and he took off with her to the bottom of the stairs,” Hannah said. While the series of events from Mosaia going into distress and until emergency responders arrived at Tinseltown took minutes, Hannah said it felt “like an eternity” before her daughter was loaded into an ambulance. Moreno stayed with her throughout the ordeal, until Mosie was loaded into the ambulance. Hannah said Mosaia was released back home last Sunday night with no apparent ill effects of her ordeal, save for being upset that she missed the movie. 6-year-old Mosie Williams. Long term, Hannah said Mosaia is waiting for a procedure that would correct her rapid heart beating issues. She has to weigh 60 pounds for the procedure, the mom said, though “she’s a string bean” and weighs just 47 currently. Hannah took to social media to find and thank Moreno for stepping in to help. The two families connected and had dinner together at Kaleidoscope on Friday. Hannah said she was grateful for the timing of everything, and that Moreno and his family attended the same movie showing as hers. “It was terrifying and the worst thing ever but everything happened so perfectly ... God, fate, anything you wanna call it, Danny was a literal angel who was in exactly the right place at the right time. I was obviously just really freaked out and panicked and probably in shock,” she said. “Until it was all over, I thought he was an EMT, because he stayed with us the whole time, asking my daughter questions to get her mind off of things, just keeping her calm.” Medford fire Chief Eric Thompson, who said crews arrived to find Mosie calm and ready for transport, said Moreno’s efforts likely brought a better outcome. “Globally, when you look at these kind of incidents, anytime we can have a good Samaritan engage the way that he did, it helps the outcome. What this good Samaritan did kind of helped eliminate the need for first responders ... and really that was the best thing that could have happened for that little girl,” Thompson said. “For there to be good Samaritans that have the courage and heart to help people, that’s what we want for our community. ... This gentleman, he’s retired. He could’ve called 911. He didn’t have to engage, but all those years of training and community service, you can’t shut that off," Thompson said. "Some of that stuff never leaves us. Moreno, who has been around the fire service since he was 10 years old and first joined as a volunteer at 16, shied from social media users referring to him as a hero. “I more consider myself just someone with training who is in the right place in the right time. Just a situation where God put me in the right place at the right time to be able to help someone,” he said. “A hero would be someone without prior training to do what I did. My brothers and sisters in law enforcement and the fire service or the military, when we do it, we’re just doing what we have the training to do.” Moreno said the patient in need being a child tugged on his heart strings a little harder, noting, "I’ve got a passion for the work I’ve one and for helping people, but I’ve got a big a passion when it comes to kids,” he said. “I’ve done CPR on many children in my 30-plus years and it's always been the hardest. ... You just get in the mode to help but knowing it’s a child it pushes you even more. ... SOURCE 365 Retail Markets, LLCPune: The Pune regional transport office (RTO) is likely to begin the online process for replacing the registration plates of more than 24 lakh vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, with high-security ones by mid-Jan to curb vehicle-related crimes, senior RTO officials told TOI on Monday. A total of 24,28,589 vehicles were registered in Pune before April 1, 2019, which would need high-security registration plates (HSRP) as mandated by the state transport department earlier this month. The deadline to complete the process is March 31, 2025, after which those with old number plates will face fines and their vehicles will be denied services like transfer of ownership, among others. "The National Informatics Centre, in coordination with the transport department, is setting up a portal and finalising the flowchart for the process. One has to just log into the website, fill in the required details and pay the fees, following which the appointed agency will manufacture the HSRP for the vehicle owner," Pune RTO Archana Gaikwad told TOI. She said Delhi-based Rosmerta Technologies Limited would manufacture the HSRPs for old vehicles. "The flowchart, on how to go about the whole process, is being finalised. Once the HSRP is made, it will be sent to the dealer who sold the vehicle. It will be the job of the dealer to affix the plate on the vehicle. The entire process from online application to affixing the HSRP on the vehicle is expected to take seven days," Gaikwad said. The RTO said owners of commercial vehicles, registered before April 1, 2019, were also required to follow the process. Motorists, however, questioned the need for HSRPs. "I don't understand the sudden need for high-security registration plates. It will only lead to chaos," Yatish Sarvekar, who bought his vehicles before 2019, said. Keshav Kshirsagar, the president of autorickshaw union ‘Baghtoy Rickshawaala', said, "In Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, there are more than 2 lakh autorickshaws and almost half of them were registered before 2019. The deadline for HSRPs needs to be extended." RTO Gaikwad said the move became necessary with the advance in technologies. "The change is needed as the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) on many highways can't scan the regular number plates." Allaying fears around early deadline, she said, "After paying the fees, the vehicle owners will have six months to change the number plates, failing which a fine will have to be paid. TOKYO — Japanese automakers Honda and Nissan announced plans Dec. 23 to work toward a merger that would form the world's third-largest automaker by sales, as the industry undergoes dramatic changes in its transition away from fossil fuels. The two carmakers said they had signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday and that smaller Nissan alliance member Mitsubishi Motors Corp. also had agreed to join the talks on integrating their businesses. Automakers in Japan have lagged behind their big rivals in electric vehicles and are trying to cut costs and make up for lost time as newcomers like China's BYD and EV market leader Tesla devour market share. Toshihiro Mibe, the president of Honda, said Honda and Nissan will attempt to unify their operations under a joint holding company. Honda will lead the new management, retaining the principles and brands of each brand. They aim to have a formal merger agreement by June and to complete the deal and list the holding company on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by August 2026, he said. No dollar value was given, and the formal talks are just starting, Mibe said. There are "points that need to be studied and discussed," he said. "Frankly speaking, the possibility of this not being implemented is not zero." A merger could result in a behemoth worth more than $50 billion based on the market capitalization of all three automakers. Together, Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi would gain scale to compete with Toyota Motor Corp. and with Germany's Volkswagen AG. Toyota has technology partnerships with Japan's Mazda Motor Corp. and Subaru Corp. News of a possible merger surfaced earlier this month, with unconfirmed reports saying Taiwan iPhone maker Foxconn was seeking to tie up with Nissan by buying shares from the Japan's company's other alliance partner, Renault SA of France. Nissan's CEO Makoto Uchida said Foxconn had not directly approach his company. He also acknowledged that Nissan's situation was "severe." Even after a merger Toyota, which rolled out 11.5 million vehicles in 2023, would remain the leading Japanese automaker. If they join, the three smaller companies would make about 8 million vehicles. In 2023, Honda made 4 million and Nissan produced 3.4 million. Mitsubishi Motors made just over 1 million. "We have come to the realization that in order for both parties to be leaders in this mobility transformation, it is necessary to make a more bold change than a collaboration in specific areas," Mibe said. Nissan, Honda and Mitsubishi earlier agreed to share components for electric vehicles like batteries and to jointly research software for autonomous driving to adapt better to electrification. Nissan has struggled following a scandal that began with the arrest of its former chairman Carlos Ghosn in late 2018 on charges of fraud and misuse of company assets, allegations that he denies. He eventually was released on bail and fled to Lebanon. Speaking Monday via a video link, Ghosn derided the planned merger as a "desperate move." From Nissan, Honda could get truck-based body-on-frame large SUVs such as the Armada and Infiniti QX80 that Honda doesn't have, with large towing capacities and good off-road performance, said Sam Fiorani, vice president of AutoForecast Solutions. Nissan also has years of experience building batteries and electric vehicles, and gas-electric hybrid powertrains that could help Honda in developing its own EVs and next generation of hybrids, he said. This release was published on openPR.The Sudanese government strongly rejected on Sunday a report backed by the United Nations which determined that famine had spread to five areas of the war-torn country. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) review, which UN agencies use, follows repeated warnings from the United Nations, other aid groups and the United States about the hunger situation in the northeast African country. IPC said last week that the war between Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) had created famine conditions for 638,000 people, with a further 8.1 million on the brink of mass starvation. The army-aligned government "categorically rejects the IPC's description of the situation in Sudan as a famine", the foreign ministry said in a statement. The statement called the report "essentially speculative" and accused the IPC of procedural and transparency failings. It said the team did not have access to updated field data and had not consulted with the government's technical team on the final version before publication. The IPC did not immediately respond to AFP's request for comment. On its website, IPC says its process is "evidence-based" and ensures "a rigorous, neutral analysis." On August 1, the IPC had already declared a famine at Zamzam camp for displaced people near El-Fasher, a city in Sudan's western Darfur region besieged by the RSF. At a press conference in the Red Sea city of Port Sudan, the government's commissioner for humanitarian aid, Salwa Adam Benya, said "the rumours of famine in Sudan are pure fabrication," Sudan's state news agency reported. Along with representatives from the agriculture, media and foreign ministries, she said some aid agencies were using "food as a pretext" to push political agendas.
