The company in its bankruptcy filing said it is “experiencing financial difficulties” and lists between $50 million and $100 million in liabilities. Stoli vodka and Kentucky Owl bourbon will continue to be available on store shelves while the company navigates the Chapter 11 process, which only pertains to its U.S. business. Until 2022, Stoli was sold as Stolichnaya in the United States, which loosely translates to “capital city” in Russian. The company shortened its title following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and boycotts against Russian-branded vodkas . Stoli Group’s founder, Russian-born billionaire Yuri Shefler, was exiled from that nation in 2000 because of his opposition to President Vladimir Putin. The liquor has long been marketed as a Russian vodka, but its production facilities have been in Latvia for several decades. Stoli Group is a unit of Luxembourg-based SPI Group, which owns other spirit and wine brands. “The Stoli Group has been targeted by the Russian Federation since it was formed nearly 25 years ago,” said Stoli Group CEO Chris Caldwell in a statement. “Earlier this year the company and our owner were both named by the Russian state as ‘extremist groups working against Russia’s interests.’” Its ongoing legal battle with the Russia government has forced Stoli to “spend dozens of millions of dollars on this long-term court battle across the globe with the Russian authorities,” according to its court filing. Caldwell also said that Stoli’s global operations has been a “victim of a malicious cyber attack” that has forced the company to operate “entirely manually while the systems are rebuilt.” A slowdown in demand for alcohol has crushed several company’s bottom lines following the pandemic when people were stuck at home and stocked up. Stoli’s filings said that it has seen a “decline and softening of demand for alcohol and spirits products post-Covid and especially beginning in 2023 and continuing into 2024.”

(The Center Square) – The majority of Americans generally support the idea of cutting back on the federal government, polling finds. The Pew Research poll from this summer found that 56% of Americans say the government is “almost always wasteful and inefficient.” Gallup’s recent polling data shows that 55% of Americans say the government is doing “too much” while only 41% say it should do more. Americans are more evenly split how big the government should be, but increasing government efficiency has more broad support. “Gallup polling earlier this year showed that 58% of Americans are dissatisfied with the size and power of the federal government,” Gallup said. “A slight majority of Americans say the government has too much power. Seven in 10 Americans in 2019 agreed that businesses can do things more efficiently than the federal government.” The survey comes after President-elect Donald Trump won the White House and issued broad, sweeping plans to decrease the scope of the federal government. To accomplish this task, Trump appointed businessman Vivek Ramaswamy and billionaire Elon Musk to lead the new Department of Government Efficiency. “Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies – Essential to the ‘Save America’ Movement,’” Trump said in his announcement. Both Ramaswamy and Musk have publicly issued scathing remarks about the waste of federal resources currently occurring in Washington, D.C. Ramaswamy, for instance, has laid out a specific plan on how thousands of federal workers could be fired. The pair of businessmen have said publicly DOGE could cut $2 trillion in federal spending. Ramaswamy and Musk visited Capitol Hill on Thursday to meet with lawmakers to discuss the potential cuts, which could even include ideas as drastic as eliminating the Department of Education and returning that responsibility to the states. Trump's allies have also discussed cutting spending on diversity, equity and inclusion programs, which are seen by Trump's camp as taxpayer-funded investment in woke ideology. Whether such stark actions would be supported by Americans remains unclear, but for now the latest polling shows Americans want something to be done. On top of that, Americans’ desire for smaller government seems to be more than a momentary political phase. “Gallup has asked this question annually over the past 24 years. On average, 52% of Americans have said the government is doing too much, compared with 42% saying the government should do more...” Gallup said. “Only twice have more Americans chosen the ‘government should do more’ alternative over the ‘government doing too much’ alternative -- in 2001 after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and in 2020 after the outbreak of COVID-19.”
THUNDER BAY — Improvements in standardized testing, and success with the EarlyOn and pathways programs were some of the highlights of the past school year for the Lakehead District School Board. Sherri-Lynne Pharand, Director of Education, said, “we're very pleased that over the last year, our students have improved in all areas and our focus on literacy and mathematics is such an important foundation for the future. It is an important piece we've had students and staff who have continued to achieve as well.” The board discussed their director’s 2023-2024 annual report at their recent annual meeting on Dec. 3. EQAO and OSSLT results According to the report, grade three and six Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) results are up from the 2022-2023 school year. In literacy, grade three students' reading levels are 83.1 per cent, up from 75.8 in 2022/23, and their writing levels are 75.8, up from 68.3. Grade six students' reading levels are roughly the same as the last school year. Reading is at 84.7, up from 84, while writing skills have slightly lowered from 83.5 last year to 82.7. “We are super proud of the progress that we're making because it makes a big difference for kids. We want all our kids to be readers and to be successful,” Heather Harris, superintendent of education, said. “So, our continued focus this year is on structured literacy. We think we're starting to see some gains in our EQAO results in elementary. We're also very proud of that. In math, the EQAO results are substantially up for grade three students, while grade six students are seeing an improvement over the previous school year. In 2022/23, grade three students scored 58.4 and grade six students scored 43.9. In 2023/24, grade three students scored 70.5 and grade six students scored 51.1. Harris said the school board’s math action plan is continuing this school year because it provides “a clear scope and sequence and resources for teachers in grades one through eight.” “An online digital tool with common assessment for grades three through eight was taking place at the beginning, middle and end of the year to monitor shortfalls. In mathematics, district schools and educators have focused professional learning on grades four, five, seven and eight and all of that on the morning of the PA Day. “We formed a valuable partnership with the university to offer subsidized training for teachers and additional basic qualifications related to math. Grade 10 students take the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). The OSSLT is where educators embed literacy strategies and supports, including vocabulary and scaffolding reading and writing tasks, across all curriculum areas. However, OSSLT results are lower than the previous school year. In 2022-2023, students scored on average 81.9 per cent, whereas, in 2023-2024 their score was 79.5 per cent. EarlyOn In the early years part of the report, Harris highlighted the opening of the two after-school child care programs at Gorman public school and Five-Mile public school. In Sept, Gorman and Five-Mile public schools offered board-operated, licensed after-school child care for kindergarten and school-aged children. The programs are staffed by Early Childhood Educators and childcare workers whose training is provided by the Thunder Bay District Social Services Administration Board (TBDSSAB). “We are proud to help meet the needs of the community. We know that childcare is important. And, we know the stress that it caused families when a third-party provider was no longer able to provide care in those schools,” Harris said. These programs focus on early childhood development by building on the child’s interests, but also centre on how to safely de-escalate a child's more difficult behaviours. Pathways According to the report, 270 Lakehead Public School students entered into the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program which includes Arts and Culture, Aviation, Business, Construction, Environment, Health and Wellness, Hospitality and Tourism, Justice Community Safety and Emergency Services, Manufacturing, and Transportation. The SHSM programs allow students in Grades 11 and 12 to learn specific economic skills while meeting the requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). “Preparing students for future success is a key priority at Lake District School Board. We aim for all students to have a chance to explore a variety of pathways that include our secondary school programs, post-secondary education, apprenticeship, training and career opportunities,” Harris said. In Sept, the board added two more SHSM programs. SHSM students at Superior High School can take an environmental program and Westgate can take construction. Harris also said the board gave grade 12 SHMS students math credits “so that students in the math department and in the tech department could have authentic learning tasks while building skills in both these subject areas.” The report also states that this past year, the board began an all-female manufacturing class for grade 11 to get young women into the trades. The report states that this initiative fosters confidence, breaks down barriers, and promotes inclusivity in the field by ensuring that students in technology and SHSM classes receive hands-on instruction using state-of-the-art equipment, equipping them with the skills needed for success in the workforce. “Our approach is to provide opportunities for experiential learning and career exploration to help our students make informed decisions about their future and equip them with the skills and the knowledge that they need for success in their chosen pathways,” said Harris.

Sean McVay is often a conservative coach, and it would not have been surprising to see him try a long field goal, or even punt. He kept his offense on the field, and Matthew Stafford calmly went through his progression before finding Tutu Atwell across the middle for an 11-yard gain that played a major role in the Rams’ ability to hold on for a season-altering, 44-42 victory over the powerhouse Bills. “We felt like we needed to make it a two-possession game,” McVay said Monday. “They were rolling. We talked about aggressively going to win that game. ... It was just a reflection of the confidence in that group and what we felt like we needed to do to be able to win the game.” The Rams offense has earned the confidence McVay showed in it at that crucial moment. That unit hasn’t always been good this season, entering last weekend rated just 18th in the league, but the Rams finally are mostly healthy heading down the stretch — and Puka Nacua and Kyren Williams are again playing at last season’s Pro Bowl level. That was bad news for Buffalo, and it could mean trouble for the rest of the NFC if the Rams (7-6) can keep scoring like this. Los Angeles will hope to keep this offensive momentum on a short week heading to San Francisco on Thursday night. Nacua said it was “fantastic being able to feel like, man, this is what it feels like when the Rams are moving and connecting on all cylinders.” Los Angeles had six scoring drives of at least 65 yards while racking up 457 yards against Buffalo. A team that appeared to be headed for a grim season after a 1-4 start is still firmly in the playoff race, also trailing Washington (8-5) by just one game for the final wild-card spot. “It’s cool to be able to play meaningful football in December,” said McVay, who led the Rams to five playoff berths in his first seven seasons. “You never take that for granted.” What’s working The offense hummed largely because it went 11 of 15 on third downs. That’s the Rams’ highest success rate in a game since 2001 — and don’t forget that crucial fourth down conversion, either. What needs help Few teams can stop Josh Allen, but the Rams’ defense didn’t come close. The defensive backs particularly struggled, from Darious Williams getting beaten repeatedly in coverage to Quentin Lake’s 34-yard pass-interference penalty in the final moments. Two weeks after Philadelphia dropped 481 yards at SoFi Stadium, Buffalo had 445 to push the Rams down to 26th in total defense entering Monday. Stock up The Rams’ offensive line has struggled mightily at times this season, but it allowed no sacks and just three hits on Stafford while clearing the way for 137 yards rushing. With full health, the line is no longer a liability.
