SMU has plenty to play for when it closes the regular season against California on Saturday afternoon in Dallas. The Mustangs (10-1, 7-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who checked in at No. 9 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday, would like to send their seniors off the right way. They would also like to complete a perfect regular season before appearing in the ACC title game in their first year in the conference. Most importantly, they want to continue to strengthen their playoff case. "You've got the College Football Playoff, so every game matters. That's what's so cool about it now. The regular season is important," SMU coach Rhett Lashlee said. "We'd like to finish well in everything we do, particularly on Saturday, to finish off the regular season, continue our momentum into the following week. Hopefully, continue to show the committee and others that we're worthy of continuing to play this year." The Mustangs are a worthy playoff team to date. Kevin Jennings has established himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the country, throwing for 2,521 yards with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also has rushed for 315 yards and four TDs. Brashard Smith has been another standout, rushing for 1,089 yards and 13 TDs. Defensively, the Mustangs rank tied for 14th in the country with 20 takeaways. "Obviously they've had a phenomenal season," Cal coach Justin Wilcox said of SMU. "As soon as you turn the tape on, it doesn't take very long to see why their record is what it is. They're very, very good really in every phase of the game - extremely explosive and quick and fast. They've got a dominant D-line. We've got a lot of challenges in front of us and our guys are excited for that." Cal (6-5, 2-5) is coming off an emotional win, defeating rival Stanford 24-21 on Saturday to secure a bowl berth. The Golden Bears will appear in consecutive bowls for the first time since 2018-19 and are now looking to clinch their first winning season since 2019. SMU is not overlooking Cal, as all five of the Golden Bears' losses have come by one score. "You'd be hard-pressed to find a better 6-5 team in America," Lashlee said. "I think you can conservatively say they very, very easily could be 9-2." Cal is led by quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who has thrown for 3,004 yards with 16 touchdowns and six interceptions. Tight end Jack Endries leads the team with 555 yards receiving, while wide receiver Nyziah Hunter has caught a team-leading five touchdowns. Defensively, Cal has the ACC's top scoring defense (20.7 points per game) and is tied with Clemson for the ACC's best turnover margin (plus-13). Defensive back Nohl Williams is the star of the group -- he leads the country with seven interceptions. Even though oddsmakers are heavily favoring SMU, Cal is going into the game with a simple mindset. "Our task at hand is to make the best bowl game right now," Mendoza said. "And the way to do that is to go into Dallas, give it our best and ruin SMU's season." Saturday will mark the first conference meeting between these ACC newcomers, and just the second meeting between the programs all time. SMU won a 13-6 game back in 1957. --Field Level Media
Following the National Democratic Congress (NDC) victory in the December 7 elections, the party has made it clear that it intends to solidify the Ashanti Region as its stronghold in the coming years. The announcement was made by the party’s National Youth Organizer, George Opare Addo, during the NDC’s Thanksgiving Service on December 22, 2024. Addo emphasized that with hard work and focused effort, the Ashanti Region, traditionally a stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), can be turned into a key support base for the NDC. “All things being equal, God willing, we will turn things around and make the Ashanti Region an NDC stronghold. We are not going to cede the Ashanti Region to the NPP. Now we know that if we work in there, we will get what we are looking for,” Opare Addo declared. In addition, the Youth Organizer took the opportunity to thank the Greater Accra Youth Wing of the NDC for their significant efforts in helping secure the party’s return to power. With the NDC set to take office under the leadership of President-elect John Dramani Mahama in January 2025, the party is focused on strengthening its presence across the country, with particular emphasis on the Ashanti Region, ahead of the next electoral cycle.Preview: Dinamo Zagreb vs. Borussia Dortmund - prediction, team news, lineups

[PRO] Focus on Nvidia's Blackwell Despite Nvidia's revenue growth rising at a slower pace each subsequent quarter, analysts are still optimistic on the stock. Many even raised their price target for Nvidia because of the chipmaker's next-generation Blackwell chip, which is in such hot demand that supply is struggling to meet it, according to Nvidia Chief Financial Officer Colette Kress. With Nvidia's earnings out of the way, markets can return to a semblance of regular programming after a month of frenzy that included the U.S. presidential elections , the Fed bringing rates down by 25 basis points, Russia ratcheting up its nuclear rhetoric , to mention just a few events. U.S. markets took everything in their stride and took a few steady steps forward on Thursday. The S&P 500 rose 0.53%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 1.06% and the Nasdaq Composite was mostly flat. "I think markets are finally finding their footing for two reasons: One is recovery from that postelection hangover after the first week, and [two is] reaction to Nvidia's earnings," Nuveen CIO Saira Malik told CNBC. Nvidia reported an incredible – by most standards – third-quarter financial report. Its revenue almost doubled year on year and net income soared. But we know already investors' bar for Nvidia is somewhere beyond the stratosphere . Impressive as Nvidia's earnings are, investors were still put off by a combination of the chipmaker's slowing rate of growth and a relatively conservative projection for its sales ahead. Nvidia shares ticked up just 0.5% after falling in premarket trading. By way of comparison, let's look at data analytics software Snowflake . Its fiscal third-quarter revenue rose 28% year on year (remember that Nvidia's jumped 94%) and the company's net loss widened. But investors were so pumped they pushed up its stock 32.7% to give Snowflake its best day ever. That discrepancy might seem baffling. But it's not unusual for the markets, where expectations dictate share movements. If investors expect a company to make a huge loss and it manages to make a dollar in profit, shares are likely to rise. An exaggeration, but still. That's just regular programming for markets. — CNBC's Jesse Pound, Samantha Subin and Alex Harring contributed to this report.

If you’re sitting on a pile of travel or credit card rewards with no immediate travel plans, donating them to a charity is an easy way to have a positive impact. And it's a popular way to give: In 2021, Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members donated around 94 million miles to charities at an approximate cash value of $2.6 million, according to the airline. Beyond the social benefits, miles donations also qualify as activity on your loyalty account and can prevent the rest of your rewards from expiring . But if you’re in the habit of maximizing points and miles, you might also want to stretch the value of your charitable donations as far as possible. And by that measure, some methods of donating points and miles fall short. Here’s what to consider before donating your miles and points . Many loyalty programs make it easy to redeem your points and miles for a donation directly through their rewards portals. But some portals — especially those from airline and hotel programs — don’t publish the cash value a charity will receive for your miles or points. That means the charity may receive less value for your donation than you’d think, while also making it hard to compare the value of a donation with the value of other options for redeeming your points. Best Western Rewards is one of the few loyalty programs that publishes a cash value for charitable points donations. The charity will receive $2 for every 500 points you donate, for a point a value of 0.4 cent each. NerdWallet values Best Western points at 0.6 cent apiece, so you would receive 33% less value for your donation relative to using them for a hotel stay. Generally, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) doesn’t count points and miles as a source of income, so if you donate them, you can't deduct the cash value of your gift. This lack of favorable tax treatment for the consumer combined with the uncertain value you’ll often receive for miles and points donations should have you at least consider other avenues for your philanthropic endeavors. Keep in mind that this drawback only matters for taxpayers who itemize deductions on their income tax returns. If you're like most people and take the standard deduction instead of itemizing, you wouldn't be able to get a charitable tax deduction from any donation. Some rewards programs have a minimum donation amount for select charities. For example, you’d have to donate at least 2,000 Southwest Rapid Rewards points for a donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. That minimum amount makes it tougher to donate points that may be collecting dust in your loyalty account. To maximize the value of your donation, consider a charity that books travel directly with your miles or points rather than donating directly through your loyalty program's portal. For example, Miles4Migrants uses donated airline miles and credit card points to directly book award travel for refugees and asylum seekers. “Instead of maximizing points and miles to book a dream trip, we do it to help refugees reach safe new beginnings,” said Patrick Stouffer, partnerships manager at Miles4Migrants, in an email. Miles4Migrants has redeemed over 775 million donated miles in pursuit of their mission, with a cash value of over $17 million. That expertise allows them to get more value out of every donation. “Our team has the specialized knowledge necessary to stretch the value of every point or mile, ensuring donations go as far as possible,” Stouffer said. “Even if you aren’t able to reap any tax advantages of donating your points, at least you’ll know they made the largest possible impact.” Direct cash donations help avoid the downsides of donating miles and points. If you have a credit card that earns cash back , or if you earn cash rewards through a shopping portal like TopCashBack or Rakuten , consider cashing out and donating those rewards instead of your miles and points. With a cash donation, you’ll know the exact value a charity will receive from your donation and likely qualify for a potential itemized deduction on your taxes. Some rewards programs make this process simple and transparent. Travel rewards programs sometimes incentivize charitable giving by offering bonus points for your cash donations. For example, American Airlines offers 10 AAdvantage miles for every dollar members contribute to the charity Stand Up To Cancer. That extra incentive can be an individual boon for your charitable donation. Just be aware that any points or miles you receive from such promotions will reduce the tax deductibility of your contribution. American Airlines values those bonus miles you receive through donations at 3 cents each. So if you donate $100 and receive 1,000 AAdvantage miles, American values those miles at $30. You’ll receive a tax form declaring those rewards as $30 in income, giving you a qualifying tax deduction of $70. When you donate cash and receive bonus points, the charity still receives your full donation and you get a slug of points. While you'll have to pay taxes on those points, it can still be a big win for your future travel plans. More From NerdWallet Craig Joseph writes for NerdWallet. Email: cjoseph@nerdwallet.com . The Head of Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), Mrs. Esther Walson-Jack has charged workers in public service to be committed to professionalism, meritocracy, and accountability through the fast-tracking of reform initiatives to reposition the Federal Civil Service. This came as she hosted the maiden service-wide virtual meeting tagged “Public Service Live” yesterday. The Live meeting was a concerted effort to ensure that public servants across the country interact, share insights, and collectively participate in moving the Service forward. According to a release by the Director of Information and Public Relations of the Service, Mrs Eno Olotu, the virtual engagement was part of activities to mark the HCSF’s 100 days of Stewardship in office. The event, she maintained, would subsequently be held quarterly to enable civil servants to collectively commit to progress, innovation, and excellence in service delivery. In her maiden address, Walson-Jack described the Civil Service as the nation’s engine room of governance, with a pivotal role in delivering government policies and programmes to the citizenry. Stressing the imperativeness of a dynamic civil service, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation stated, “These reforms are not mere buzzwords; they are a roadmap to building a Civil Service that efficiently serves people, innovates continuously, and operates with integrity. “I assure you that we are committed to the path of creating a workforce that embodies our aspirations for a new Nigeria to be respected globally and trusted locally.” she declared. She also described the establishment of the seven (7) War Rooms dedicated to accelerating the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan 2022-2025 (FCSSIP 25) as a game changer designed to focus on each strategic pillar of the reforms and measure outcomes and progress through coordinated efforts. Walson-Jack enjoined all civil servants to familiarize and align themselves with the six pillars of FCSSIP 25 to enhance productivity and efficiency in every Ministry, Department, and Agency (MDA) and take advantage of the expanded Leadership Enhancement and Development Programme (Lead-P) and the Structured Mandatory Assessment-Based Programme (Smart-P) to improve themselves. The HCSF further reiterated her commitment to drive the transformative journey of marching the Service to greatness with technology while highlighting that some of the newly introduced technologies such as the Service-wise GPT, GovMall, and Online Compendium of Circulars were products of digitalization that would enhance the capabilities of civil servants. Walson-Jack also emphasized rewards and recognition of excellence for deserving and outstanding officers. According to her, “In line with our efforts to foster a culture of excellence, we introduced initiatives to recognize and celebrate outstanding performance. “Today, I want to acknowledge the newly promoted directors. Your achievements are a testament to your hard work and dedication and I encourage you to lead by example as we continue this transformation journey,” she declared. The live event was robust and engaging with over 700 registered civil servants participating online. It was a unique opportunity for officers to ask the HCSF questions and seek clarifications on issues affecting their work, welfare, and areas of exploring mutual benefit and commitment to the service.

Awfis Reports Breach Of Insider Trading Norms By Sr ExecutiveThe Prime Minister said the season was a time to remember the importance of “being there for one another”, including in “the more difficult times”. He also expressed hope for “peace, particularly in the Middle East as the birthplace of the Christmas story” amid spiralling conflict across the region. The message comes after a challenging first five months in office for the Labour Government and against the backdrop of a flatlining economy and rising inflation. Sir Keir said: “This Christmas, people will be travelling up and down the country. Heading home, visiting relatives and loved ones to celebrate together the hope and joy of this special season. “It’s a time to remind ourselves what’s really important. Family. Friendship. And fellowship between all people. “Being there for one another – in these celebrations, as well as the more difficult times.” To our military and veterans, the whole nation thanks you for the sacrifices you make to keep us safe. My government will serve you as you have served your country. I wish you and your families a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. pic.twitter.com/LphMZog6np — Keir Starmer (@Keir_Starmer) December 22, 2024 The Prime Minister sought to strike an optimistic note following another year of political upheaval for Britain, which saw Labour win a landslide victory after a surprise election called by Rishi Sunak in the summer. After taking office in July, the new Government made a series of unpopular decisions as ministers confronted the realities of creaking public services and strained national finances. As well as dealing with the economic inheritance, Sir Keir said he needed to fix a “broken society” which manifested itself in summer riots across the country after the Southport knife attack. Sir Keir said: “This Christmas, I will be hoping for peace, particularly in the Middle East as the birthplace of the Christmas story. “I’ll be looking towards a better, brighter future for every person and celebrating the joy and wonder that Christmas brings. “So, from my family to yours, I hope you have a very merry Christmas.” The message comes after revised official figures released on Monday indicated that UK gross domestic product (GDP) showed no growth between July and September. Downing Street defended the Government’s record so far when asked about the data, telling reporters: “We had to take those tough decisions to lay the foundations of growth such that we can then deliver the higher living standards over this Parliament that people want to see.” The Prime Minister also used his message to thank those spending Christmas serving others, including in the NHS and emergency services, the armed forces, churches and charities. “I know that this is not an easy time for everyone, and my thoughts are with all those who are lonely this Christmas. “Having a tough time, missing a loved one. You are not alone,” he said. Meanwhile, Kemi Badenoch said Christmas was a time to reflect on “all that’s happened in the year” and “support all of those people who need our assistance”. “I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone, not just in the Conservative Party or in my constituency, but across the country,” the Tory leader said. “For all that you have been doing in your communities, supporting each other and helping to keep all our towns, villages and places going. “I think that Christmas is a time for us to reflect on all that’s happened in the year. “Sometimes we have amazing years. “Sometimes, like when I lost my dad, we have difficult years and we’re commiserating, but we do it together. “But it’s a time for us to support all of those people who need our assistance, who need our help, who need our support.” She added: “And I’m looking forward to 2025. “I wish you all the very best for the New Year and all of the exciting things to come.” Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey said: “This year, I’ve had the chance to spend time with some amazing young carers. “Incredible young people who will spend this Christmas doing what they do all year round; looking after loved ones who are ill or disabled. “Carers embody the Christmas spirit of love, selflessness and generosity. “So I hope we can all take some time to think of them, and keep them in our hearts. “And wish them – and everyone – a Christmas full of peace, joy and love.”
