Each person has millions of genetic variants, each having a small effect. But together, these variants can increase the risk of getting a condition. A polygenic risk score estimates the overall risk someone has of getting a disease by adding up the small effects of variants throughout an individual’s entire genome. Polygenic risk scores are not used to diagnose diseases. Some people who don't have a high-risk score for a certain disease still can be at risk of getting the disease or might already have it. Other people with high-risk scores may never get the disease. People with the same genetic risk can have different outcomes depending on other factors such as lifestyle which determine one’s lifelong environmental exposures, also called the exposome . Dr. Ortega says that getting to the point where all people know their polygenic risk scores will require a solid foundation of "omics" research and datasets, cutting-edge technologies and further discoveries of gene-disease links — all of which are within his team's expertise and capabilities. Takashi Murakami has the kind of childlike energy that only comes with age and wisdom. One part mad genius, another part curious kid, the prolific artist is one of the biggest names in his field. And – with his hotly anticipated collaboration with Louis Vuitton hitting stores in January – one of the biggest names in fashion. In hindsight, the artist’s first collaboration with the leather goods brand for spring/summer 2003 was a pivotal moment. It heralded high fashion’s diffusion into all parts of pop culture, and the blurring of lines between creativity and commerce that still defines the industry today. The smiling flowers and cartoon creatures that were splashed across the brand’s monogram bags came at a time when such collaborations were at the cutting edge – and before kawaii had entered the mainstream fashion lexicon. “I didn’t really know anything about fashion at that time,” he tells Vogue , speaking via video call from his huge, warehouse-like studio in Saitama, just north of Tokyo, where members of his staff mill about in the background. “For the first four years or so I was visiting Louis Vuitton’s headquarters quite frequently, so I remember it being a learning experience for me about how a brand is built,” he says, stroking his silver goatee. “Those 20 years have passed in the blink of an eye.” In the time since, the 62-year-old has settled into the easy swagger of a man who’s made his mark on the world. “I’m getting older, so I don’t get embarrassed about anything anymore or have any goals left that I want to achieve in the future,” he says. Editor’s note: College Station's impending housing crisis, as well as the housing conflict between residents and college students, is The Eagle’s No. 8 news story of 2024. This is part of a daily series of the top 10 stories in Bryan-College Station and the Brazos Valley this year. Stories will appear daily with No. 1 running in the Dec. 31 edition. With over 72,000 Texas A&M University students enrolled at the College Station campus and around 12,000 beds available on campus, a record-breaking number of students were left to find housing off-campus in 2024, amidst College Station’s impending housing crisis. According to an existing conditions report by the city of College Station, nearly 30% of households in College Station are “cost burdened” with more than 50% of those being “severely cost burdened.” A household is considered cost-burdened when more than 30% of its income is spent on housing; a household is considered severely cost-burdened when more than 50% is spent on housing. Since 2015, the median home price has increased by 75% since 2015 while wages have only increased by 25%. Furthermore, the report projected a housing supply shortage by 2030. In order to tackle the impending housing crisis, the Housing Action Plan Steering Committee was created by the city to develop an action plan. Consisting of 13 College Station citizens, the committee gathered community feedback through three general housing surveys: a survey for College Station residents, a survey for college students and a survey for businesses and organizations. They received 700 citizen responses, 1,600 student responses and 50 employer responses. Middle housing options, including duplexes, condos and townhouses were found to be noticeably absent from the city, according to the report. Thus, one of the solutions proposed by the action plan is to create and incentivize more diverse housing types, something the College Station City Council has been keeping in mind during recent meetings, including the approval of more middle housing options off Old Wellborn Road and for 16 acres off Rock Prairie Road. David Brower, community development analyst for College Station, previously said they were interested in density incentives for developers within the city. “This is done in lots of cities throughout the country,” he previously told The Eagle . “So, if this was an area you could build, our rule is that you can’t go more than four stories, but for every additional story that you want to build — up to 20 — [developers will] either provide affordable units or provide funding into an affordable housing fund that then will help make units somewhere else.” The other solution proposed by the Housing Action Plan is to incentivize the preservation of affordable housing to current and future community members. One of the most commonly discussed housing limiters includes the no-more-than-four ordinance, a city ordinance that prevents more than four unrelated individuals from living in the same dwelling together. Many Texas A&M students have spoken out against the ordinance in the past and offered alternative methods to control housing, including a two-per-bedroom housing model. While students are interested in sharing apartments to create more affordable houses, citizens argue this raises housing prices for nearby neighborhoods and students can damage integrity by being bad neighbors. The city also offers two zoning classifications to assist in housing matters: the Restricted Occupancy Overlay, or ROO, and the High Occupancy Overlay, or HOO. A ROO limits the no-more-than-four ordinance further so no more than two unrelated individuals can live in a single dwelling while a HOO creates a possible exception to the no-more-than-four ordinance to allow occupancy levels beyond the citywide standard. These ordinances have been a point of contention for students and residents. Residents fear future “Ag-Shacks,” a term given to an apartment or dwelling that houses an unsafe amount of students at higher prices that become more affordable by students when split many ways. According to the report, the median sales price for a non-new construction home in 2023 was $389,000 in College Station. To tackle misinformation on housing and educate students new to the city, Texas A&M established an off-campus student service department in late 2023 . Throughout 2024, the department spoke at many council meetings about its efforts, including the “Live With Integrity” campaign that taught the no-more-than-four ordinance by using social media, signs on-campus and emails. While college students have taken a stand against the ordinance, the city council has shown no immediate signs of changing the no-more-than-four ordinance. President-elect Donald Trump on Friday nominated Dr. Marty Makary to lead the Food and Drug Administration , selecting a surgeon and author who gained national attention for opposing vaccine mandates and some other public health measures during the COVID-19 pandemic. Makary, a professor at Johns Hopkins University, is the latest in a string of Trump nominees who have declared the U.S. health system “broken” and in need of a shakeup. He will need to be confirmed by the Republican-led Senate to take the post. Trump announced the nomination in a statement Friday night, saying Makary “will restore FDA to the gold standard of scientific research, and cut the bureaucratic red tape at the agency to make sure Americans get the medical cures and treatments they deserve.” Headquartered in the Maryland suburbs outside Washington, the 18,000 employees of the FDA are responsible for the safety and effectiveness of prescription drugs , vaccines and medical devices as well as a swath of other consumer goods, including food , cosmetics and vaping products . Altogether those products represent an estimated 20% of U.S. consumer spending annually, or $2.6 trillion. Makary gained prominence on Fox News and other conservative outlets for his contrarian views during the COVID-19 pandemic. He questioned the need for masking and, though not opposed to the COVID-19 vaccine, had concerns about vaccinations in young children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that COVID-19 vaccinations prevented more than 686,000 U.S. deaths in 2020 and 2021 alone. While children faced much lower rates of hospitalization and death from the virus, medical societies including the American Academy of Pediatrics concluded that vaccinations significantly reduced severe disease in the age group. Trained as a surgeon and cancer specialist, Makary was part of a vocal group of physicians calling for greater emphasis on herd immunity to stop the virus, or the idea that mass infections would quickly lead to population-level protection. In a February 2021 Wall Street Journal piece , he wrote that “COVID will be mostly gone by April, allowing Americans to resume normal life.” That summer the delta variant of the virus ripped through the U.S. , followed by omicron in the winter, leading to hundreds of thousands of additional deaths. If confirmed, Makary would be expected to report to anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. , Trump's pick to oversee the nation’s Department of Health and Human Services , which includes the FDA. Makary does not share Kennedy’s discredited views on vaccines , but he has a similar distrust of the pharmaceutical industry. Makary has lamented how drugmakers used misleading data to urge doctors to prescribe OxyContin and other opioids as low-risk, non-addictive pain relievers. That marketing was permitted under FDA-approved labeling from the 1990s, suggesting the drugs were safe for common ailments like back pain. In more recent years, the FDA has come under fire for approving drugs for Alzheimer's , ALS and other conditions based on incomplete data that failed to show meaningful benefits for patients. A push toward greater scrutiny of drug safety and effectiveness would be a major reversal at FDA, which for decades has focused on speedier drug approvals . That trend has been fueled by industry lobbying and fees paid by drugmakers to help the FDA hire additional reviewers. Kennedy has proposed ending those payments, which would require billions in new funding from the federal budget. Other administration priorities would likely run into similar roadblocks. For instance, Kennedy wants to bar drugmakers from advertising on TV , a multibillion-dollar market that supports many TV and cable networks. Supporters of Donald Trump , a vocal advocate of expanding capital punishment, criticized the move as an assault to common decency just weeks before the president-elect takes office. Hawaii’s Kīlauea volcano, located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, began erupting Monday. Lava fountains emitted from the volcano, which is one of the most active ones in the world. The volcano erupted last in September and June. The United States Geographic Survey posted videos of the eruption cascading along the caldera floor. According to the AP, the area where the eruption is has been closed off to the public since 2007 due to many hazards. Some of the dangers include sulfur dioxide and other gases from the volcanoes, possible explosions and uneven ground surfaces like cracks and cliffs. “Kīlauea volcano has been intermittently erupting,” the USGS said. “This is an exciting time on Kīlauea because several eruptions have occurred at the summit following the 2018 summit collapse.” According to the USGS, past eruptions in the last several years from Kīlauea have lasted from around two weeks to over a year.
