Even more Canadian passports are in limbo almost one month into the Canada Post strike. In early November, Service Canada put a temporary hold on mailing out passport packages after November 8, 2024. “By holding residential mail several days in advance of a work stoppage, Service Canada has reduced the risk of having any passports held in Canada Post distribution centres,” Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) spokesperson Maja Stefanovska told Daily Hive. Just days after 55,000 employees represented by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) , the agency said were already being held. In an update on Wednesday, Stefanovska told Daily Hive that as of December 1, approximately 185,000 passports that were printed and ready to be mailed are being held by Service Canada. In a release on Wednesday, Canada Post said it reviewed the latest offer from the CUPW and “determined that the union’s demands are unaffordable and unsustainable – adding billions of dollars in long-term fixed costs.” “Added up, all the demands in CUPW’s latest offers would cost more than $3 billion over four years, at a time when the postal service is already recording large financial losses,” stated the postal service. “Some of the big-ticket items include wage increases and staffing changes.” The union’s latest from Tuesday said it just wants its members to “have good collective agreements, with their rights protected.” ESDC said the hundreds of thousands of passports on hold will be mailed out once the labour disruption is over and regular mail service resumes. According to Canada Post, once operations resume, all mail and parcels in the postal network will be secured and delivered as quickly as possible on a first-in, first-out basis. However, services may take time to fully return to normal, no matter the length of the disruption. ESDC advises Canadians who have already submitted an application and are in urgent need of a passport to request to pick it up at a Service Canada location. You can do so by contacting the at 1-800-567-6868 or visiting a Service Canada Centre. “Passport offices may not be able to respond to requests on a first-come, first-served basis due to a high volume of requests and are therefore contacting clients based on the date of travel or need,” explained Stefanovska. For anyone requesting a transfer, the pickup date is arranged based on their travel date or need. ESDC says the pickup could even be arranged for the same day for urgent situations. “If the processing time for the application is now outside service standard, Canadians can request a file transfer at no additional fee,” said Stefanovska. “If the application is still within service standard, Canadians will need to pay the fees for a file transfer ($45) and standard pick up service ($20).” According to the agency, as of December 1, there have been requests for about 6,500 passports to be transferred for pick-up at a Service Canada office. Okanagan Sun head coach Travis Miller was struck by a vehicle in Kelowna's Glenmore neighbourhood on Tuesday, Dec. 10. Kelowna RCMP have confirmed the incident, stating the pedestrian was struck when crossing the road in the crosswalk. The Sun confirmed in a social media post stating the pedestrian was Miller, who had just finished his last recruiting meeting of the day. According to RCMP, Miller was taken to Kelowna General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and the extent of the injuries are unknown. Meanwhile, the Sun said Miller underwent surgery and both his feet were crushed in the incident. “The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with police,” said Kelowna RCMP media relations officer Sgt. Laura Pollock. “There was no indication the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol and speed does not appear to be a factor.” RCMP are still investigating the incident and are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or anyone with dashcam footage in the area from 5:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. to step forward and reach out to police at 250-762-3300 with the file number 2024-72174. Newport News City Council on Tuesday is expected to vote on an ordinance that would prohibit people from possessing, carrying or transporting firearms in buildings owned or used by the city government. The city currently prohibits the open carrying of firearms in city buildings and facilities. Still, it does not prohibit a concealed carry permit holder from bringing a concealed weapon. City code states that “No person shall openly possess, carry or transport any firearm, ammunition for a firearm, or any components or combination ...” and goes onto list various prohibited locations. The proposed ordinance amendment removes “openly” from the text so that it reads, “No person shall possess, carry or transport any firearm ...” In addition to government-owned buildings, the new rules would apply to any recreation or community center facility operated by the city government or by any authority or local governmental entity created or controlled by the city. In buildings not owned by the city, or by any authority or local governmental entity created or controlled by the city, the new rules would only apply to the part of the building that is being used for a governmental purpose and when such building is being used for a governmental purpose. The council meeting is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, at 2400 Washington Ave. The prohibition won’t apply to authorized law enforcement officers, authorized military personnel in the performance of their lawful duties, security guards employed by the city or any authority or local government entity created or controlled by the city in the performance of their lawful duties. It would also not apply to exceptions mandated by state law. The proposed ordinance would allow lawfully possessed firearms and ammunition that are stored out of sight in a locked private motor vehicle lawfully parked on city property or on a public street. Virginia adopted a numerous pieces of gun safety legislation in 2020, when Democrats controlled the House, Senate and executive branch. One of those bills gave localities the ability to ban firearms in government buildings, public community centers, and parks, as well as at permitted events. City spokesperson Kim Bracy wrote in an email response to questions about the proposal that Newport News is “committed to ensuring a safe environment for both the public and our employees.” She said the city is dedicated to its practice of assessing safety vulnerabilities and addressing them within the framework of the law. “The security landscape has evolved, particularly in the government sector, and we are responding proactively,” she said. The Virginia Citizens Defense League, a pro-gun rights organization, issued a news release opposing the proposed ordinance, critiquing it as an infringement on gun owners’ right to carry a firearm for self defense. The organization did, however, praise one change made in the proposed ordinance, which crossed out public parks from a list of places prohibiting firearms. The proposed ordinance allows security personnel and law enforcement to deny entry to people violating the new gun rules and direct the violators to leave.
