National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) will inspect Newport homes and businesses this week. The visits are part of a safety inspection programme to check service termination points, also known as cut-outs, are working properly. These points are where the main incoming electricity service cable and fuse are located, usually near the electricity meter. The inspections will be visual only, with no disassembly or power supply interruptions. NGED plans to carry out 400,000 such inspections annually across South Wales, the Midlands, and the South West over the next 20 years. Richard Brady, NGED’s policy engineer heading the inspection programme, said: "The UK is recognised internationally as having one of the most resilient and safe energy systems and this inspection programme underlines our commitment to the highest safety standards. "Inspectors will visually examine cut-outs to check they are working as they should, taking photos and notes for our records. "In the unlikely event of a defective cut-out being found, NGED engineers will be sent to carry out repairs at no cost to the customer." The visits will also help confirm what types of low-carbon technologies, such as electric vehicle chargers and solar panels, are connected to the network. This information will aid future planning for load growth on the network. Mr Brady added: "These are important safety visits but we understand they could be inconvenient for customers and apologise in advance if this is the case." The inspectors, from a company called Calisen, will be clearly identifiable as working for NGED and will have ID and authorisation to enter properties.
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is taking some time to reflect after Chrystia Freeland's bombshell resignation, the natural resources minister said on Tuesday. "The prime minister, as I understand it, a number of caucus colleagues have said that the prime minister has said that he will reflect on both the decision that minister Freeland made, but also what he's heard from members of his own caucus," Jonathan Wilkinson said. "I think we all need to give him a little time to reflect, and I respect that fact that he's going to take some time to reflect." Freeland quit as finance minister on Monday morning just hours before she was set to present the government's fall economic statement. That kicked off a day of turmoil on Parliament Hill that began with a morning cabinet meeting and wrapped with an evening meeting of the Liberal caucus, where some members called for Trudeau to step aside as party leader. That includes New Brunswick MP Wayne Long, one of 23 caucus members who signed a letter back in October calling for Trudeau to quit. "We certainly have more MPs than last time. So, if I had to guess how many more right now, I'd say we're probably at 40 to 50 right now," Long said. "But there's a lot more than that. I mean, this is so different than times before." The attempt to oust Trudeau earlier in the fall took up a great deal of oxygen on Parliament Hill, but ultimately failed to garner support from inside the cabinet. This time, Long said, at least five cabinet ministers believe it's time for a change at the top. "I certainly am one to say to my colleagues, to ministers in particular: 'Let's come out of the shadows,'" Long said. "Let's openly, once and for all, state how we feel and let's move forward with what we know has to happen." After the failed coup in October, Liberal MPs told reporters they believed Trudeau was taking time to reflect. But the very next day, he publicly stated his intention to stay on as leader at a press conference. The Liberals have faced three non-confidence votes in the House of Commons this fall and have struggled to advance legislation because of a filibuster on a Conservative privilege motion related to misspending at a now-defunct green technology fund. On Tuesday, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre once again called on NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh to topple the government, criticizing him for voting against the latest non-confidence motion last week. Poilievre said Canada needs a new prime minister because U.S. president-elect Donald Trump can smell weakness from a mile away and the Trudeau government is weak. Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet also said a new Parliament is needed "as soon as possible," and he wants to see an election called in January. Blanchet said Trudeau has lost the political, moral and ethical authority to govern. He said the election should happen as soon as possible in the new year because Canadians do not want a campaign over the holiday season. On Monday, Singh called for Trudeau to step down but did not make a firm comment on whether the NDP would declare non-confidence in the Liberal government. Instead, Singh said "all options are on the table." The NDP, which ended a formal supply-and-confidence agreement to support the Liberals in September, has since voted with the government on all three non-confidence motions. Singh has repeatedly said a Poilievre-led Conservative government would cut things New Democrats have fought for like dental care, pharmacare and other social programs. The Tories are also calling on the House of Commons trade committee to study the tariff threat between the week of Jan. 6 and Jan. 20, the date of Trump's inauguration. The House of Commons is expected to rise for the holiday break on Tuesday and return on January 27. In her resignation letter, Freeland said she's been at odds with Trudeau in the last few weeks over the government's fiscal priorities. She said the government should do away with costly "political gimmicks" and instead set money aside to deal with a potential tariff war with the U.S. Dominic LeBlanc was sworn in as the new finance minister Monday, minutes after the government's fall economic statement was released. The economic update shows the deficit has grown to nearly $62 billion, far beyond the $40-billion target Freeland set earlier this year. It includes $1.3 billion in new spending on measures to beef up the border in response to Trump's threat to impose 25 per cent tariff threats on Canadian goods. LeBlanc, who is also in charge of intergovernmental affairs and democratic institutions, says his main priority as finance minister will be to address affordability issues. He will also continue to oversee the public safety file, implementing new border measures, until Trudeau holds a broader cabinet shuffle. That's expected to happen soon in order to replace ministers who have announced they won't seek re-election. A family-owned clothing store in Portage la Prairie is closing in January, after a rise in shoplifting created an “unsustainable burden” for the 13-year-old business. Olina Fashions owner Arishya Aggarwal said theft has become an everyday occurrence, resulting in financial losses and concerns about the safety of staff and customers. “Closing this business wasn’t an easy decision. After 13 years, it became clear that the challenges we faced, especially theft, made it impossible to keep going,” she said. MIKE DEAL / FREE PRESS FILES Arishya Aggarwal said there is “no real deterrent” for theft, which hurts businesses and communities. She said the decision was a painful one, because the store and its regular customers have been a huge part of her family’s lives. Her family, which owns multiple businesses in Portage, started to think about shutting Olina Fashions in 2019. The last day is Jan. 25. “Retail theft was the biggest factor — 100 per cent,” Aggarwal said. “It’s not just the financial losses, though those are massive. It’s the constant stress of having to watch out for it every day, the abuse our staff take when they try to stop it and the helplessness of seeing it get worse. “Theft impacts everything, from morale to the ability to focus on growing the business. When you’re constantly dealing with theft, you’re stuck in survival mode instead of being able to grow.” A thief held a machete to Aggarwal’s stomach during a robbery in August 2023. Rampant theft, coupled with soaring costs, has been a factor in several recent store closures in Manitoba, including four 7-Eleven locations in Winnipeg. “This is becoming something that is more often the case now,” said Manitoba Chambers of Commerce president and CEO Chuck Davidson. “Some businesses have little alternative while dealing with cost pressures already.” Aggarwal said there is “no real deterrent” for theft, which hurts businesses and communities. “If someone gets caught, nothing meaningful happens,” she said. “That sends the message that stealing is basically risk-free. By the time the RCMP step in, it’s already too late, and we never get our stolen merchandise back. Community safety officers don’t have the authority to make much of a difference, either.” Aggarwal believes changes to Canada’s laws could help to curb theft. “We need laws that enforce accountability and consequences, while also offering pathways for rehabilitation and positive change,” she said. “Operating expenses like property taxes and salaries are already so high, and theft adds an unsustainable burden on top of that. “Without real reform, more businesses will be forced to close. Independent businesses are the backbone of our communities, and we need real support if we want to keep them alive.” Olina Fashions is one of few non-chain clothing stores in Portage, about 70 kilometres west of Winnipeg. In October, politicians and other attendees of a retail summit in Winnipeg stressed the need to address poverty and drug addiction to curb thefts. A retail theft enforcement campaign in Winnipeg’s Exchange District, Osborne Village and West End is being made permanent with Manitoba government funding. The province has faced calls to expand the program to other communities. The province offered a $300 security equipment rebate to homeowners, renters and business owners, but the $2 million fund was quickly depleted. Davidson and the Canadian Federation of Independent Business would welcome the program’s return — with an enhanced rebate — to help offset costs. “It’s not even just retail theft. It’s vandalism, and there’s a high price tag associated with that,” said Tyler Slobogian, a Winnipeg-based senior policy analyst with CFIB. Insurance deductibles often exceed the cost of stolen goods, meaning few businesses are willing to file a claim. About 75 per cent of Manitoba small businesses have said higher insurance rates are a top concern, Slobogian said. He said small businesses owners — many of whom are in debt after the COVID-19 pandemic — have spent a median of $5,000 on crime-related expenses in the last three years. “That could be the make or break for a lot of these small firms that are dealing with tighter profit margins,” he said. Slobogian and Davidson said businesses need help from all levels of government. Davidson encouraged Manitobans to support local businesses. About $200 million worth of goods is stolen annually in Manitoba, according to a Retail Council of Canada estimate. Retailers say theft is vastly underreported. Reports of shoplifting in Manitoba remain below pre-pandemic levels, a recent Statistics Canada study found. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. StatCan said 7,884 retail thefts (of items valued up to $5,000) were reported to Manitoba’s police services in 2023, up from 5,592 in 2022 and down from 9,437 in 2019. Portage’s RCMP detachment received more shoplifting reports last year (247) than it did in each pandemic year and 2019 (207). StatCan’s data for all of Manitoba suggested about half (48 per cent) of all shoplifting reports in 2019 were solved, compared with 30 per cent in 2023. Charges were laid against 1,685 people in 2019 and 1,124 in 2023. chris.kitching@freepress.mb.ca Chris Kitching is a general assignment reporter at the . In the world of football, achieving the milestone of scoring 1000 goals is an unparalleled feat that only a few legendary players have managed to accomplish. Among those few is the iconic Cristiano Ronaldo, whose relentless pursuit of perfection and unparalleled work ethic have propelled him to the pinnacle of the sport. As the Portuguese superstar continues to defy the odds and rewrite the record books, many are left wondering: can Ronaldo reach the coveted milestone of 1000 goals and continue playing at the highest level well into his mid-40s?CES 2025 is looming around the corner, and while the annual tech show is usually full of high-tech goodies, this year is going to be especially important for gamers. Nvidia’s Jensen Huang is hosting the big CES keynote this year, so you can expect Team Green to be going big. Likewise, we haven’t seen new graphics cards from AMD, so it’s a very strong possibility that CES is going to usher in an entirely new generation of graphics hardware . CES 2025: When is it Happening? CES 2025 officially kicks off on January 7, 2025. However, the real show starts a day earlier, on January 6, when Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang takes the stage for the CES 2025 keynote at 6:30pm PST. CES 2025 will wrap up around January 10. We expect announcements to happen throughout the week, as the hundreds of tech companies all vie for attention. Companies like Intel, AMD, Samsung and Sony all have their own keynotes scheduled, likely brimming with announcements of their own. There’s going to be a lot of stuff. What is CES? CES, or the Consumer Electronics Show, is an annual tech convention, where tech companies big and small show off concepts and new products for the new year. Unlike some other trade shows, a big part of CES has always been concepts that give a glimpse into the future, rather than just the products we’ll see at our local Best Buy later in the year – though the latter is still a huge part of the show. You can expect everything from gaming laptops to flying cars to make an appearance at CES, though this year we suspect the former is going to be the star of the show. What to Expect From CES 2025 While CES usually has a wide variety of technology on offer, and likely will this year too, the thing we’re most interested in is new GPUs. After all, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang is hosting the big keynote that kicks the event off, and I couldn’t imagine Team Green not taking that opportunity to announce something big. We’re overdue for new graphics cards anyway. Typically, new graphics cards – both from AMD and Nvidia – release on a roughly two-year cycle. Given that the RTX 4090 launched in October 2022 and the Radeon RX 7900 XTX launched in December of the same year, we’re officially overdue for a new generation of graphics cards. It doesn’t hurt that Intel beat both of these companies to the punch with its new graphics card, the Intel Arc B580, either. With the Intel card already out in the wild, and with the company’s disappointing Core Ultra 200S processors already out, it’s less clear what Intel will have to bring to the table. The Lunar Lake architecture behind AI PCs has been out since September, and it's unlikely that Team Blue will have a follow-up to that architecture already. However, we are still waiting on a new generation of H-series processors from the company. H-series processors are typically reserved for gaming laptops, and offer substantially better performance than the chips behind your thin and light devices. If AMD does announce new graphics, it’s possible that we might at least get a sneak peak at the AMD Z2 – or whatever the follow-up to the Z1 Extreme will be called. Handheld gaming PCs have blown up over the last year or so, with hits like the Asus ROG Ally X and the Lenovo Legion Go really taking the idea popularized by the Steam Deck and running with it. MSI is heading into the show with the MSI Claw 8 AI already up for preorder, and we can’t imagine it’s the only manufacturer with a handheld to show. After all, we’re still waiting for Alienware to make its Concept UFO from CES 2020 a reality. Given that it’s been 4 years, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it make an appearance. Beyond PC gaming, though, Sony and Samsung both have major press conferences at the show. While it’s exciting to see Sony at the show, it’s likely that the company is going to focus primarily on their non-gaming segments – think TVs, audio, etc. Likewise, I don’t expect Samsung to announce new phones at the show, though with the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra being nearly a year old at this point, we could be surprised. Like any year, though, there’s no way to predict everything that will be at the show. There are hundreds of companies showing off what they’ve been cooking up, and there is always something huge that takes everyone by surprise. Luckily, because we’ll be on the ground, we’ll be updating this article with all the cool stuff we see in Las Vegas in January, so be sure to keep this page bookmarked. (AP Photo/Godofredo A. Vásquez) SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy will miss Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers with a sore throwing shoulder, dealing another blow to the 49ers' playoff hopes. Purdy injured his right shoulder in last Sunday's loss to the Seattle Seahawks . He underwent an MRI on Monday that showed no structural damage and the team initially thought he could play this week. But when Purdy's shoulder didn't feel right when he made a few warmup throws at practice Thursday, those plans changed. “We thought he just needed some rest and we really weren’t concerned about him not being good this week,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday. “But when he started up Thursday, it just surprised him, surprised us how it felt. So we had to shut him down.” Shanahan said the team doesn't believe the injury is a long-term concern but he is uncertain whether Purdy will need to miss any additional time. “The MRI doesn’t look like that, so it should be all right,” Shanahan said. “But the way it responded this week, it’s really up in the air for next week. We’ll have to see on Monday.” The 49ers also will be missing star defensive end Nick Bosa, who is out after leaving last week's game in the second half with injuries to his left hip and oblique. Left tackle Trent Williams is questionable with an ankle injury and will be a game-time decision. San Francisco struggled on defense without Bosa last week and now will go the entire game this week without two of the team's most important players. The Niners (5-5) are currently in a three-way tie for second in the NFC West, a game behind first-place Arizona, and have little margin for error if they want to get back to the playoffs after making it to the Super Bowl last season. “I know it’s disappointing,” Shanahan said. “We knew there was a chance for Nick. I think the guys were a little surprised with Brock yesterday, but we addressed all that today. We’re going to have 48 guys in uniform. I know our guys believe in themselves. I believe in them. We’re missing two good players, definitely. But we got a lot of good players out there. So by no means do we not have a chance to win.” This will be the first time Purdy has missed a start because of an injury since taking over as the 49ers’ quarterback in December 2022. Brandon Allen will start in his place. Purdy has completed 66% of his passes this season for 2,613 yards, 13 TDs, eight interceptions and a 95.9 passer rating that is down significantly from his league-leading mark of 113 in 2023. Allen has been mostly a backup since being drafted by Jacksonville in 2016. Allen last started a game in Week 18 of the 2021 season for Cincinnati and has thrown just three passes the last three seasons — including none since joining San Francisco in 2023. Allen said he preparation hasn't changed this week with the exception of getting to work with the first-team receivers instead of running the scout team. “It’s an opportunity.” he said. “The circumstances are what they are. But I think our team all year long we’ve been kind of dealing with injuries here and there. It’s been a big next-man-up mentality. It’s definitely an opportunity for me to go out and play well and put our guys in a good position to win the game. Obviously, we want Brock back and healthy and all that. But for the time being, it is an opportunity for me.” Joshua Dobbs will be the backup Sunday. San Francisco also will be without starting cornerback Charvarius Ward, who returned to the team this week following the death of his 1-year-old daughter on Oct. 28 but needs more time to get back up to speed. Punt returner Jacob Cowing (concussion), linebacker Tatum Bethune (knee) and defensive lineman Kevin Givens (groin) are also out. The Packers will also be without two key defensive players with cornerback Jaire Alexander ruled out after leaving last week's game with a knee injury and linebacker Edgerrin Cooper out with an injured hamstring. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL Josh Dubow, The Associated Press See a typo/mistake? However, the pursuit of the Brazilian international is not without its challenges. "Treasury expects to hit the statutory debt ceiling between January 14 and January 23," Yellen wrote in a letter addressed to House and Senate leadership, at which point extraordinary measures would be used to prevent the government from breaching the nation's debt ceiling — which has been suspended until Jan. 1, 2025. The department has in the past deployed what are known as “extraordinary measures” or accounting maneuvers to keep the government operating. But once those measures run out the government risks defaulting on its debt unless lawmakers and the president agree to lift the limit on the U.S. government’s ability to borrow. "I respectfully urge Congress to act to protect the full faith and credit of the United States," she said. The news comes after President Joe Biden signed a bill into law last week that averted a government shutdown but did not include President-elect Donald Trump’s core debt demand to raise or suspend the nation’s debt limit. The bill was approved by Congress only after fierce internal debate among Republicans over how to handle Trump's demand. “Anything else is a betrayal of our country,” Trump said in a statement. After a protracted debate in the summer of 2023 over how to fund the government, policymakers crafted the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which included suspending the nation's $31.4 trillion borrowing authority until Jan. 1, 2025. Notably however, Yellen said, on Jan. 2 the debt is projected to temporarily decrease due to a scheduled redemption of nonmarketable securities held by a federal trust fund associated with Medicare payments. As a result, “Treasury does not expect that it will be necessary to start taking extraordinary measures on January 2 to prevent the United States from defaulting on its obligations," she said. The federal debt currently stands at roughly $36 trillion — which ballooned across both Republican and Democratic administrations. And the spike in inflation after the coronavirus pandemic pushed up government borrowing costs such that debt service next year will exceed spending on national security. Republicans, who will have full control of the White House, House and Senate in the new year, have big plans to extend Trump's 2017 tax cuts and other priorities but debate over how to pay for them.
