Some people were kind. Others told us to get off there — something I desperately wanted to do as I cowered out of the frame. One of my friends asked a teen boy with an accent where he was from, and he named a country we’d never heard of before. But we were also served up images of people cutting, adult men in dimly lit rooms telling us we were “cute” (we quickly hung up on them), and — a first for all of us — a guy masturbating. That’s when we closed the laptop for good, unsure of what we had just seen. And so we were vulgarly inducted into growing up online . As a member of Gen Z, I don’t know a single female friend who hadn’t been on the receiving end of unwanted sexual messages, photos, and/or harassment online before their 18th birthday, both from strangers and/or men and boys they know in some way. In fact, my Omegle anecdote isn’t at all unique. Sophia Englesberg, a 23-year-old actress living in New York City, remembers being on the now-defunct website with a group of her 8th-grade friends in Pennsylvania when they came across a veteran and thanked him for his service. “Then he took his c–k out and showed us, and then he put it in a vacuum nozzle,” she recalled. “‘[Omegle] is just like men waiting for girls.” Englesberg, who has had a cell phone since she was 11, was only in 5th grade when she downloaded what she thought was a pet video game. It was actually an anonymous messaging app where you chat as pet avatars, which led to her accidentally stumbling into a confusing sexual conversation. “It slowly became a sex thing,” Englesberg, who didn’t know who was on the other side of the conversation, said. “They would describe very explicitly all the sexual things that they wanted to do to me ... I was like, what does that mean, and then they would explain, but I’m in the fifth grade. “I definitely learned a lot of sexual language through that, and it was crazy because I was totally in my own little world.” Taylor Vahey, 24, has been on social media since she was 11 — and immediately she started swatting down “men with beards or grays” hitting on her or making comments about her appearance. She was able to manage unwanted attention by blocking unsavory characters but says some of her friends got swept away by attention from older men they met on Instagram or playing video games online. “By late middle school there were times where my friends would kind of be flattered or think it was cool, like, ‘Oh I’m Snapchatting with this guy, he’s in his twenties,’” Vahey, now a consultant for startups and living in Cape Cod, recalled. Some of those friends traded explicit photos with adult men, she said. I spoke to more than a dozen young women for this piece. Every one of them signed up for social media as a minor and reported receiving unwanted sexual attention online before turning 18 — and everyone shrugged that off as a given. I’ve been on Instagram since I was 11, beginning with a private account. When I briefly made my Instagram profile public in high school, my posts were flooded with flirtatious and sometimes gross comments from adult men — strangers complimenting my looks or describing their unsolicited sexual fantasies — most of which I deleted. The direct messages were more direct, including one about “naughty things” from a middle-aged dad whose account featured photos of him with his kids. Like all the other young women I interviewed for this story, I blocked those users. In addition to receiving suggestive messages, Sofia Figueroa-Cruz, 21, a Miami college student says she has been exposed to vitriolic, sexist hate since she signed up for Twitter at age 15. “That’s really the first time that I was exposed to misogyny ... ,” she said. “I think that was my first glimpse into just sort of being mistreated.” She sent me a tweet in which an anonymous stranger called her a “pig faced Jew” and said “you deserve to get raped so much.” Many other similar messages were sent to her by middle-aged males while she was still under 18. “My DMs would be full of it, even with just a small following. There was no reason I would be targeted like this,” she said. And it’s not just strangers lurking online — many girls report being exploited by perpetrators closer to home. Charlotte Brenner, a 21-year-old from Austin, Texas, working in the service industry, says girls are regularly getting exploited by their classmates. As crazy as it may sound to anyone who came of age before Snapchat exploded in popularity, teens — both boys and girls — regularly swap nudes on the app, where photos disappear after a couple of seconds. But there are also stealthy apps that allow users to download and save images sneakily. “All the boys in our sophomore year of high school apparently had a group chat where they traded girls’ nudes like baseball cards,” Brenner said. “They say, ‘Hey, I’ll give you four of Jade’s for one of Natalie’s.’” Brenner said she has never sent nude photos herself, but added that she’s “one of the few people I know who has never sent a photo.” Some young women I spoke with recalled unwittingly being groomed by adults as they came of age on the internet. One 21-year-old college student from Florida — who asked to withhold her name out of fear she could be targeted online — told me she was “sexualized” on the internet from the age of 11 when she started to engage on Tumblr and message boards dedicated to online fandoms for YouTube celebrities. “Getting into group chats, everybody’s allegedly your age, but you never actually know. And, of course, being a naive kid, you just believe them,” she said. She recalled that self-professed adults online corralled conversations about sexual topics and pressured her to describe her sexual encounters as she wrestled with questions about her sexuality. “I would be told, like, ‘Oh, well, if you’re trying to figure [your sexuality] out, why don’t you just go and kiss your friend, and tell us about it,’” she said. “Some of them were adults at the time while I was still in high school.” The experience caused the young woman, who now identifies as straight, to question her gender and sexuality and to isolate herself from her friends and family. “The internet feels very disconnected from reality,” she said. “You are surrounded by people that are inevitably going to sexualize you.” Zoomer girls are the first generation to have unknowingly participated in a mass experiment : What happens when you hand tween girls a palm-sized portal to all the darkest potential humanity has to offer? Former US President Jimmy Carter passed away at the age of 100 on Sunday (US local time) at his home in Plains, Georgia, as reported by the Washington Post, citing his son James E Carter III. Carter's son confirmed his death but did not provide an immediate cause. According to the Carter Center’s statement from February 2023, after a series of hospital stays, the former US President decided to stop further medical treatment and spend his remaining time at home under hospice care. In recent years, he had been treated for an aggressive form of melanoma skin cancer, with tumors that spread to his liver and brain. The Washington Post also noted that Carter was last photographed outside his home with family and friends on October 1, as he watched a flyover held to mark his 100th birthday. Throughout his lifetime, Jimmy Carter wore many hats. He was a small-town peanut farmer, a US Navy veteran, and the governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975. He became the first president from the Deep South since 1837 and the only Democrat elected president between Lyndon B Johnson and Bill Clinton's terms in the White House. As the 39th President of the US, Carter is remembered for achieving the signing of the Camp David Accords, which led to the first significant Israeli withdrawal from territory captured in the Six-Day War of 1967 and a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt that has endured. In recognition of his efforts, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for "his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development," according to the Nobel Prize statement. The Washington Post report also highlighted Carter's role in pushing through the Panama Canal treaties, which placed the critical waterway under Panamanian control, improving US relations with Latin American neighbors. Taking advantage of the opening made by US President Richard Nixon, Carter granted full diplomatic recognition to China and made human rights a central theme of American foreign policy, the report added. The 30-year-old Haitian activist remembers that he started to learn the names of powerful gang leaders even as a child in primary school. In the decades since, new gangs have formed, and new gang leaders — including some with international profiles — have taken over, as Haiti experienced multiple waves of political upheaval and uncertainty. Now, the Caribbean nation is in the grips of a period of deadly gang violence and instability that many Haitians say is the worst they have ever seen. Yet for Haiti’s children — the millions caught in the crossfire, no longer able to attend school, or pushed to join the armed gangs amid crippling poverty — the situation is especially dire. The United Nations child rights agency UNICEF estimates that between 30 and 50 percent of the country’s gang members are now children. “Our youth should be worrying about how to study, how to innovate, how to do research, how to contribute to society,” Chery told Al Jazeera in a phone interview from the capital Port-au-Prince. “But us in Haiti, we have other worries as youth: It’s about what to eat. Can I go outside today? We live each day, 24 hours a day, hoping to see tomorrow.” ‘Institutional limbo’ For decades, armed gangs with connections to Haiti’s political and business elites have used violence to gain control of territory and exert pressure on their rivals. With funding from wealthy backers, as well as money gathered through drug trafficking, kidnappings and other illicit activities, Haiti’s gangs filled a void caused by years of political instability and accrued power. But it was the 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise that created an opening for the gangs to strengthen their authority. No federal elections have been held in years, and faith in the state has plummeted. Haiti continues to undergo a shaky political transition, as it seeks to fill the power vacuum created by Moise’s killing. But experts say the gangs — now believed to control at least 80 percent of Port-au-Prince — have become even more emboldened. The gangs are “probably stronger than ever”, said Romain Le Cour, a senior expert at the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime, a research group in Geneva. They have maintained their firepower as well as territorial and economic strength even as a United Nations-backed, multinational police force led by Kenya was deployed earlier this year to try to restore stability, he explained. This month, the gangs again captured global attention after passenger planes were hit by gunfire at the airport in Port-au-Prince, prompting international airlines to suspend flights into the city and isolating the country further. The incidents came amid an internal power struggle. On November 11, Haiti’s transitional presidential council, which is tasked with rebuilding Haitian democracy, abruptly dismissed the country’s interim prime minister and appointed a replacement, highlighting ongoing political dysfunction. Against that backdrop, Le Cour told Al Jazeera that the gangs’ propaganda has been especially effective. Haitian political leaders as well as international bodies have so far failed to stem the violence, which has paralysed large swaths of Port-au-Prince. Hundreds of thousands of people are displaced, and the country faces a humanitarian crisis. The gangs are able “to capitalise on their discourse”, Le Cour said, “that the government, the state, the international community, everybody is unwilling, unable, incapable of ... doing anything to take Haiti forward. “Their argument resonates so deeply right now because, in front of them, there is no one left.” Out of school, out of options That stark reality has pushed some Haitian children and youth, particularly from impoverished areas of Port-au-Prince and communities under gang control, to join the armed groups. Some enlist under threats of violence against them and their families, while others hope to get money, food or a means of protection. Often, they join simply because they have no alternatives. Children carry out a variety of tasks within the gangs, from acting as lookouts to taking part in attacks or transporting drugs, weapons and ammunition. Girls are also recruited to clean and cook for gang members. Many are subjected to rape and sexual violence as a means of control. Robert Fatton, a professor at the University of Virginia and an expert on Haiti, said for youth in the country’s slums, “there is a certain appeal to [becoming] a big man with a weapon”. “It gives you a sense, to put it crudely, of ‘manhood’ and a sense that you can do something with your life — however violent that might be,” he told Al Jazeera. But Fatton said socioeconomic hardships are a large part of the reason children and youth end up participating in armed groups. “There are no jobs. They are stuck in poverty. They live in horrible conditions, so the gangs are the alternative.” Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. In 2021, the UN Development Programme estimated (PDF) that more than six million Haitians lived below the poverty line and survived on less than $2.41 a day. The recent surge in violence has made a dire situation worse. More than 700,000 people have been displaced from their homes, while access to healthcare, food and other basic services is severely limited. Half of those who have been displaced in recent months are children, according to the UN. In late September, the World Food Programme also said that about 5.4 million Haitians faced acute hunger, with children particularly hard hit. One in six Haitian kids now lives “one step away from famine”, the humanitarian nonprofit Save the Children said. Meanwhile, more than 900 schools have been forced to close, leaving hundreds of thousands of children out of the classroom. The UN’s humanitarian agency said these kids face a heightened risk of gang recruitment and could “experience ‘lost years’, growing up without the skills needed for their future and survival”. “I’ve never seen a deeper crisis in Haiti in my life,” Fatton said of the overall situation befalling the country. Noting that he grew up during the rule of Haitian dictators Francois “Papa Doc” Duvalier and his son Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier, he added: “I don’t think the situation even in those dark days is as bad as now.” Challenge of reintegration Yet despite these challenges, Haitian rights advocates are trying to support children in need. Emmanuel Camille heads KPTSL, a group that defends the rights of Haitian children. He painted a dire picture of daily life for all children in the country, from a lack of access to education, food and healthcare, to a general absence of safety and security. “In terms of education, health, nutrition, social justice,” he told Al Jazeera, “I can say that we’re dragging children into hell.” Camille said trying to get children out of armed groups is especially challenging. The first step, he explained, is to get them and their families out of their physical environment — the neighbourhood, town or city, for instance, where they fell in with armed groups. “We need to sever the link between the child and their previous environment to hopefully give them a better life,” he said. But relocation alone will not solve the problem. The children also need a re-education plan tailored to their specific needs, as well as psychological support and economic assistance for their families, Camille said. In 2019, Chery himself founded a volunteer group called AVRED-Haiti to help support the reintegration of people who spent time in prison, including youth who had served in gangs. He also said reintegration is difficult when children go back to their homes in gang-controlled areas: Most end up going back to stealing or rejoining an armed group. “There’s nothing we can do about it because they have other concerns that we can’t address,” he told Al Jazeera. Chery added that “the best way to fight insecurity or banditry in Haiti” is for the state to address the basic needs of its citizens: food, housing, employment and poverty. “That would bring many more solutions in the long term.” Urgency grows The need to address those root causes appears more urgent than ever as Haiti plunges deeper into catastrophe. The UN warned on Wednesday that at least 150 people were killed, 92 were injured and about 20,000 others were forcibly displaced in a single week amid violent confrontations between armed gang members and Haitian police. In one particularly violent episode, gang members launched a coordinated attack on the Port-au-Prince suburb of Petion-Ville. Police fought back alongside armed residents — some part of a vigilante movement known as Bwa Kale — and more than two dozen suspected gang members were killed. Camille said two child gang members who attended activities organised by KPTSL were among the casualties. They were aged eight and 17. “At all levels, there needs to be justice — very strong justice — to change this situation,” he said of the crisis Haiti faces. “All we want is to offer children a chance,” Camille added. “Right now, children are living like adults. They don’t have a life. The sumptuous fare being offered at Patrick's stunning Merrion Street eatery would barely cover the starters when compared to some to astronomical prices being charged elsewhere in the world. Guilbaud's prices don't make it anywhere near the top ten of menu prices at Michelin restaurants across the globe. A meal there will set you back an eye watering $1,230 a head or €1,171. While Japan, China and the USA dominate the top five, you have to get to number seven on the list before a European entry features with The Alchemist in Copenhagen charging €700 per person. The 15th placed, three-star Geranium, in the centre of Copenhagen, charges a hefty €560 a head for one of their tasting menus - more than double Patrick Guilbaud. NEW ORLEANS — A scruffy little fugitive is on the lam again in New Orleans, gaining fame as he outwits a tenacious band of citizens armed with night-vision binoculars, nets and a tranquilizer rifle. Scrim, a 17-pound mutt that's mostly terrier, has become a folk hero, inspiring tattoos, T-shirts and even a ballad as he eludes capture from the posse of volunteers. And like any antihero, Scrim has a backstory: Rescued from semi-feral life at a trailer park and adopted from a shelter, the dog broke loose in April and scurried around the city until he was cornered in October and brought to a new home. Weeks later, he'd had enough. Scrim leaped out of a second-story window, a desperate act recorded in a now-viral video. Since then, despite a stream of daily sightings, he's roamed free. The dog’s fans include Myra and Steve Foster, who wrote “Ode to Scrim” to the tune of Ricky Nelson’s 1961 hit, “I’m a Travelin’ Man.” Michelle Cheramie, founder of Zeus' Rescues, at her office in New Orleans on Dec. 9 with a whiteboard index of sheltered cats and dogs and a Scrim look-alike recuperating in the background. 'I'm a travelin' dog and I've made a lot of stops/All over this town...' Leading the recapture effort is Michelle Cheramie, a 55-year-old former information technology professional. She lost everything — home, car, possessions — in Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and in the aftermath, found her calling rescuing pets. “I was like, ‘This is what I should be doing,’” Cheramie said. “I was born to rescue.” She launched Zeus’ Rescues, a nonprofit shelter that now averages 600 cat and dog adoptions a year and offers free pet food to anyone who needs it. She helped Scrim find the home he first escaped from. It was Cheramie's window Scrim leaped from in November. She's resumed her relentless mission since then, posting flyers on telephone poles and logging social media updates on his reported whereabouts. She's invested thousands of dollars on wildlife cameras, thermal sensors and other gear. She took a course offered by the San Diego Zoo on the finer points of tranquilizing animals. And she's developed a network of volunteers — the kind of neighbors who are willing to grid-search a city at 3 a.m. Scrim on Oct. 24 at the Metairie Small Animal Hospital in Metairie, La. '...And at every stop I own the heart, of at least one lovely...' People like writer David W. Brown, who manages a crowd-sourced Google Map of all known Scrim sightings. He says the search galvanized residents from all walks of life to come together. As they search for Scrim, they hand out supplies to people in need. “Being a member of the community is seeing problems and doing what you can to make life a little better for the people around here and the animals around you,” Brown said. Neighbor Tammy Murray had to close her furniture store and lost her father to Parkinson's disease. This search, she says, got her mojo back. “Literally, for months, I’ve done nothing but hunt this dog,” said Murray, 53. “I feel like Wile E. Coyote on a daily basis with him.” Murray drives the Zeus' Rescues van toward reported Scrim sightings. She also handles a tactical net launcher, which looks like an oversized flashlight and once misfired, shattering the van's window as Scrim sped away. After realizing Scrim came to recognize the sound of the van's diesel engine, Murray switched to a Vespa scooter for stealth. The search party spotted Scrim napping beneath an elevated house, and wrapped construction netting around the perimeter, but an over-eager volunteer broke ranks and dashed forward, leaving an opening Scrim slipped through. Scrim's repeated escapades prompted near-daily local media coverage and a devoted online following. Cheramie can relate. “We’re all running from something or to something," she said. "He's doing that, too.” Cheramie's team dreams of placing the pooch in a safe and loving environment. But a social media chorus growing under the hashtag #FreeScrim has other ideas — they say the runaway should be allowed a life of self-determination. The animal rescue volunteers consider that misguided. “The streets of New Orleans are not the place for a dog to be free,” Cheramie said. “It’s too dangerous.” Scrim rests in a kennel Oct. 24 at the Metairie Small Animal Hospital in Metairie, La. His trembling body was scraped and bruised, and punctured by projectiles. A vet removed one, but decided against operating to take out a possible bullet. The dog initially appeared content indoors, sitting in Cheramie's lap or napping beside her bed. Then while she was out one day, Scrim chewed through a mesh screen, dropped 13 feet to the ground and squeezed through a gap in the fence, trotting away. Murray said Cheramie's four cats probably spooked him. Cheramie thinks they may have gotten territorial. Devastated but undeterred, the pair is reassessing where Scrim might fit best — maybe a secure animal sanctuary with big outdoor spaces where other dogs can keep him company.
