Labor-red billboards, a crowd of supporters, and a childcare policy announcement worth roughly $1.5 billion – this was a campaign event without an election date. The latter topic has seen him take a leaf out of the Trump playbook. "Part of the problem in the United States was that people didn't believe that the government was listening to them when they couldn't pay their bills... they just felt a real disconnect, seems to be some of the analysis," Dutton said after the US election . "To be honest, there's an eerie parallel with what's happening here in Australia, in that sense." Sure enough, he's been asking the same questions of voters that Trump did of Americans before storming back to the White House. "Ask yourself this question; are you better off today than you were two and a half years ago?" Dutton said in late December. "Heaven knows how bad it will be in three years' time." Dutton, however, has maintained his Coalition is the underdog for next year's vote. The opposition would need to gain 21 seats to govern in its own right – history says parties just don't make up that much ground one term after being voted out. Dutton has also been extremely effective in campaigning against the government's policies, but has offered few of his own. There's a commitment to reduce migration beyond the government's targets, but an exact number won't come until after the election. There had been a suggestion that stage 3 tax cuts would be reworked, but that was walked back in November. When other policies are announced, that will give the government a chance to attack the opposition, just as it has over the Coalition's commitment to wind back some of the workplace laws introduced this term. Albanese's unofficial campaign speech was significant not just for the childcare announcement, but for some attack lines he rolled out – just as Dutton has relentlessly criticised the government over the cost of living, the prime minister returned the favour. "Every Australian would have been worse off if Peter Dutton had blocked our tax cuts, cut people's wages, stopped energy bill relief and made it harder and more expensive for people to see a doctor," he said. Expect to hear a lot more of that in the new year, even if the election date remains a mystery. I’m rattling along in a rickety local bus (no windows, driver perched on the springs of a seat that long ago lost its padding) towards Kochi in Kerala state, south-west India. The city, once known as Cochin, was a relatively sleepy place in the 1960s. Since then, the population has exploded from a manageable 250,000 to more than 31⁄2 million. What you’ll see today is a colonial-era district, Fort Kochi, surrounded by a vast Indian city of shopping malls, high-rise apartment blocks and motorways – pumping with life and energy 24/7. Credit: Getty Images Fort Kochi was a significant trading port long before the local raja (king) negotiated a deal with the Portuguese in 1500. He got the worst of the arrangement, slowly losing power to his erstwhile ally. The Portuguese built a fort, hence the name, and held on to the territory for the next 163 years before losing it in turn to the Dutch. The British wrested it away in 1795, holding on to the growing town until India gained its hard-won independence in 1947. It’s no surprise Kochi is a major tourist attraction. It’s small enough to navigate around easily and is packed with the magnificent architecture of three successive colonial influences alongside Indian, with the whole lot surrounded by sea. With an international airport well serviced by flights from Australia, Kochi is a great place to begin your Indian adventure, especially if you’re a first-time visitor to India. Kerala is considered a politically and socially progressive state relative to the rest of India. It’s also one of the wealthiest and this is evident in Kochi. It’s a city of fine restaurants, hipster cafes, boutiques packed with original designs and a surprisingly large number of art galleries, many housed in exquisite, well-maintained colonial buildings. The city is home to the government-supported Kochi-Muziris Biennale, which has had quite an impact on the art world since its inception in 2012. The sixth edition gets underway in December this year. Wander in the narrow, winding lanes edged by buildings in the Dutch and Portuguese styles housing shops, cafes and private homes. Drop in for coffee at Kashi Art Cafe. Stroll with the locals at sunset on Kochi Beach, dine at a waterfront restaurant watching the boats coming and going across the harbour. There’s a wide range of accommodation here, from luxury hotels to modest guesthouses. Take a state-of-the-art electric ferry to the wharf near the iconic Chinese fishing nets and next door to the gorgeous Brunton Boatyard Hotel, which began life as a British colonial shipyard on the waterfront. It’s pristine, well designed and full of lovely artisanal furnishings and fittings that reflect the Portuguese heritage of the area. Fort Kochi is not nearly as busy as many Asian cities with similar attractions. There’s still a homely feel to it, easygoing and genuine. My first day in Kochi, I lunch at Qissa cafe and find myself gravitating back there often during my stay. On one visit, as I step out into the street to take a phone call, I notice I’ve left my bag at my table. I’m about to double back when the waiter, a young man with the delicate beauty typical of the people of this region, his abundant black hair hauled into a topknot, makes me a sign: “No worries, I’ve got my eye on it, go do what you need to do.” Kochi is still that sort of place. Jammu, Dec 23: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Monday said that Jammu and Kashmir was leading the country in implementing the recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP)-2020. “I am proud that J&K is leading the country in implementing the recommendations of the National Education Policy 2020,” LG Sinha said inaugurating the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA) Regional Centre in Jammu. He said that a revolution was taking place in J&K in the education sector in the past few years. The LG said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, J&K was witnessing a cultural resurgence. Biden Administration Set To Launch Trade Probe Into Chinese SemiconductorsOTTAWA — The RCMP plans to create a new aerial intelligence task force to provide round-the-clock surveillance of Canada's border using helicopters, drones and surveillance towers. The move is part of the federal government's $1.3-billion upgrade to border security and monitoring to appease U.S. president-elect Donald Trump's concerns about the flow of migrants and illegal drugs. Trump has threatened to impose a 25 per cent tariff on all Canadian and Mexican exports to the U.S. as soon as he is inaugurated next month unless both countries move to improve border security. Canada will also propose to the United States the creation of a North American "joint strike force" to target organized crime groups that work across borders. In addition, the government intends to provide new technology, tools and resources to the Canada Border Services Agency to seek out deadly fentanyl using chemical detection, artificial intelligence and canine teams. Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc told a news conference Tuesday he has discussed parts of the plan with American officials and that he is optimistic about its reception. "We have a lot of work ahead of us," said LeBlanc, who tried to play down the notion Canada was simply bowing to American demands. "The fight against fentanyl is very much a fight that Canadians want to have because of its impact in Canada," he said. "Deepening, strengthening, being more visible in the posture at the border is something that we're happy to do with our American partners." The announcement followed a promise in the fall economic statement Monday to earmark the money over six fiscal years for the RCMP, the border agency, Public Safety Canada and the cyberspies at the Communications Security Establishment.
