Syria's president Bashar al-Assad fled Syria as Islamist-led rebels swept into Damascus Sunday, triggering celebrations across the country and beyond at the end of his oppressive rule. Russian news agencies late Sunday said Assad and his family were in Moscow. Crowds toured Assad's luxurious home after the rebels declared he had fled, a spectacular end to five decades of brutal Baath party government. The government fell 11 days after the rebels began a surprise advance more than 13 years after Assad's crackdown on anti-government protests ignited Syria's civil war, which had become largely dormant until the rebel push. "This victory, my brothers, is historic for the region," Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, leader of the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group (HTS) that spearheaded the advance, said in an address at the landmark Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. US President Joe Biden said Assad should be "held accountable" but called the nation's political upheaval a "historic opportunity" for Syrians to rebuild their country. "The fall of the regime is a fundamental act of justice," Biden said from the White House. Residents cheered in the streets as the rebel factions heralded the departure of "tyrant" Assad, saying: "We declare the city of Damascus free." Celebratory gunfire sounded along with shouts of, "Syria is ours and not the Assad family's". AFP correspondents saw dozens of men, women and children wandering through Assad's modern, spacious home whose rooms had been stripped bare. "I can't believe I'm living this moment," tearful Damascus resident Amer Batha told AFP by phone. "We've been waiting a long time for this day," he said. The rebel factions on Telegram proclaimed the end to "50 years of oppression under Baath rule, and 13 years of crimes and tyranny and displacement". It is, they said, "the start of a new era for Syria." The foreign ministry of Assad's key backer, Russia, had announced earlier Sunday that Assad had resigned from the presidency and left Syria. The head of war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdel Rahman, told AFP: "Assad left Syria via Damascus international airport before the army security forces left" the facility. Later Sunday, a Kremlin source told Russian news agencies that he and his family had arrived in Moscow where they had been granted asylum "on humanitarian grounds". Around the country, people toppled statues of Hafez al-Assad, Bashar al-Assad's father and the founder of the repressive system of government he inherited. For the past 50 years in Syria, even the slightest suspicion of dissent could land one in prison or get one killed. During their advance, the rebels said they had freed prisoners, including on Sunday at the Sednaya facility, notorious for the darkest abuses of Assad's era. UN war crimes investigators urged those taking charge in the country to ensure the "atrocities" committed under Assad's rule are not repeated. Amnesty International called this a "historic opportunity" for those responsible for the abuses in Syria to face justice. The end of Assad's rule came just hours after HTS said it had captured the strategic city of Homs. Homs was the third major city seized by the rebels, who began their advance on November 27, the same day a ceasefire took place in neighbouring Lebanon between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement. Hezbollah had supported Assad during the long civil war but has been severely weakened by Israeli strikes. The group's forces "vacated their positions around Damascus", a source close to the group said Sunday. HTS is rooted in the Syrian branch of Al-Qaeda but has sought to soften its image in recent years. It remains listed as a terrorist organisation by Western governments. On Sunday afternoon the rebels announced a curfew in the capital until 5:00 am (0200 GMT) Monday. The commander of Syria's US-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which controls much of northeast Syria, hailed the fall of Assad's "authoritarian regime" as "historic". A military council affiliated with the SDF clashed Sunday with Turkish-backed Syrian fighters in Syria's north, leaving 26 fighters from both sides dead, the Observatory said, as the Turkish-backed group launched an offensive on the Manbij area. The Observatory said Israel had struck government security buildings and weapons depots Sunday on the outskirts of Damascus, as well as in the eastern Deir Ezzor province. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the overthrow of Assad was a "historic day in the... Middle East" and the fall of a "central link in Iran's axis of evil". "This is a direct result of the blows we have inflicted on Iran and Hezbollah, Assad's main supporters," he added. The UN envoy for Syria said the country was at "a watershed moment". Turkey, which has historically backed the opposition, called for a "smooth transition". Iran said it expected "friendly" ties with Syria to continue, even as its embassy in Damascus was vandalised. Since the start of the rebel offensive, at least 910 people, mostly combatants but also including 138 civilians, have been killed, the Observatory said. Syria's war has killed more than 500,000 people, and forced half of the population to flee their homes. Millions fled abroad. "I can barely remember Syria," said Reda al-Khedr, who was only five years old when he and his mother escaped Syria's Homs in 2014. "But now we're going to go home to a liberated Syria," he told AFP in Cairo. Liberated, but facing enormous challenges. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Sunday the bloc would help rebuild a Syria that safeguards minorities after Assad's fall. bur-it/jj

Rupee settled at new lows as the year closed as dollar’s resurgence weighed on emerging-market currencies. Also Read Mcap of 6 of top-10 most valued firms climbs Rs 86,847.88 cr; HDFC Bank, RIL biggest gainers 56 mins ago Horoscope December 29: Forecast for all zodiac signs from Aries to Pisces 9 hours ago The action-packed 2024 continued to impact the rupee’s exchange rate against major currencies throughout, with a series of geopolitical events ranging from the Russia-Ukraine war and crisis in the Middle East to trade disruptions in the Red Sea and elections across several major economies. Global factors, including measures taken by major central banks, have hit not only the rupee-dollar dynamics but also disrupted the exchange rates of currencies across all emerging economies. In fact, the rupee’s fall with respect to the dollar has been less than its depreciation in terms of other currencies. And it has ended up with gains compared to euro and the Japanese yen. Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) ex-governor Shaktikanta Das also said in the central bank’s December bi-monthly monetary policy that the Indian rupee has remained less volatile compared to its peers in emerging markets. Yet, the RBI has been more active in its efforts towards stabilising the rupee-dollar rate, thanks to increased demand for the greenback due to India’s dependence on oil imports and the widening trade deficit. “RBI was also seen intervening actively in NDF (non-deliverable forward) markets to prevent sharp depreciation of the rupee,” said Naveen Mathur, Director – Commodities & Currencies, Anand Rathi Shares and Stock Brokers. This was evident in foreign exchange reserves, which declined from the record high of USD 704.89 billion in late September to USD to USD 644.39 billion as of December 20, 2024, the lowest level in nearly six months. The foreign currency assets also include the effect of appreciation or depreciation of non-US units like the euro, pound and yen held in the foreign exchange reserves. India’s external challenges intensified as China’s GDP growth slowed to 4.8 per cent, reducing demand for Indian exports. Besides, supply chain disruptions due to tensions in the Middle East and escalated crisis in the Red Sea hit the trade balance of several countries, including India. The RBI’s log of the daily exchange rate movement of rupee versus major currencies showed the domestic unit has depreciated against the greenback by almost 3 per cent from 83.19 level on January 1 to 85.59 on December 27 this year, with a record decline of Re 2 in the past two months. It breached the crucial 84 level on October 10, surpassed Rs 85-a-dollar mark on December 19 and even touched the life-time low of 85.80 during intra-day December 27, recording the steepest single-day fall in nearly two years. However, the local unit has witnessed a gain of 8.7 per cent against yen rising from the rate of Rs 58.99 per 100 yen on January 1 to Rs 54.26 on December 27. And the gain was even increased to almost 9 per cent since September 17, when the rate hit the peak of Rs 59.63 per 100 units of the Japanese currency. Similarly, in terms of euro, the rupee registered a gain of over 5 per cent since its lowest level of Rs 93.75 a euro on August 27 to Rs 89.11 on December 27. Experts attributed the trend to the unprecedented rise in dollar strength due to improved macroeconomic factors in the US, which prompted the Federal Reserve to move slower towards easing monetary policy, and the outcome of the Presidential election in the world’s largest economy. President-elect Donald Trump’s declared intention to raise tariffs on Chinese imports spooked currency traders worldwide, triggering an unabated chase for the greenback, leading to the mass exodus of foreign capital from Indian equity markets. “The US dollar outperformed the market with 6.9 per cent gain in 2024. Improvement in the US economy, weakness in Europe and geopolitical concerns led to a surge in the US dollar, said Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst at Mirae Asset Sharekhan. The most significant weakness in the rupee was observed in the latter half of 2024, particularly between October and December, driven by substantial Foreign Institutional Investors (FII) outflows, said Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst – Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities. During this period, the Indian stock markets witnessed around Rs 1.70 lakh crore of FII outflows, “which weighed heavily on the rupee’s performance”, he said. However, the outlook for the Indian currency next year is relatively stable and projected to range between 82 and 87 against dollar, said Ajit Mishra, SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd. “A potential recovery may be supported by government policy measures and improvements in domestic economic growth,” Mishra said. In 2025, a number of global events are expected to influence the currency market trends. The most significant cues are expected to come from the US Federal Reserve’s interest rate moves and President Donald Trump’s trade measures that are likely to make Chinese imports costlier, fuelling inflation in the world’s largest economy. If the Trump administration adopts an ultra-protectionist stance, such an approach could disrupt global trade and capital flows, fuelling volatility across asset classes and currency markets, said Anindya Banerjee, SVP, Head of Research, Currency, Commodity & Interest Rates, Kotak Securities. India’s economic growth, projected at 6.5-7.5 per cent for 2025, could support the rupee, while monetary easing by the RBI to stimulate growth could hit the currency adversely. “For 2025, we expect the rupee to fall to Rs 87/USD. The upside may be limited to Rs 83,” Choudhary of Mirae Asset Sharekhan, said, adding that China’s much-awaited fiscal stimulus in the first half and expected slowing down in the US economy in the second half will support the rupee later. We all need political heroes, especially our children. In the aftermath of the recent election, I’ve thought about which political figures have shown integrity and courage that would fit the description. I focused on who might be models of character for our adolescents, especially those who are on the edge of reaching voting age. I think this would be an excellent topic worth exploring with them, in schools and at home. While I have my list, I think we might first help kids define what a hero is and then come up with who they think some of our current heroes are. Which ones meet the criteria, and which ones don’t? Think about your most recent heroes. What are your criteria and biases? In this kind of discussion, both parents and teachers should refrain from trying to influence kids toward their own preferences. Help kids develop their own ideas. We first need to be clear on our definition of a hero. Many articles I found praising political heroes never noted any definition of a hero. I like the definition that comes from Wikipedia, based on classic books on the subject. It defines a hero as “one who displays courage and self-sacrifice for the greater good.” Many people who I’ve asked for hero nominations named people who don’t fit that definition. Former First Lady Michelle Obama and former President Barack Obama are not heroes. I admire them and share many of their political values, but they don’t fit the definition. Yet I think former Rep. Liz Cheney, with whom I share very few political values, is. Exploring the subject with adolescents, I’d start with an attention-grabbing introduction by playing the lead song from the musical “Hamilton,” featuring Lin Manuel Miranda. It’s easily available on YouTube.com in both a scene from the show and a recording. Some teens may remember the musical or have seen it; Miranda is a well-known composer and performer. A few may be able to share recollections of the show and how Hamilton was portrayed as a hero. Ask them to keep Hamilton in mind as they explore what defines a hero. Follow this by asking them their thoughts about who some modern heroes are and why they think they’re heroes. If they come up with a definition that is close to the classic definition, consider using it. If not, share with them your reasons for choosing the classic one from Wikipedia. Perhaps have them think about different levels of heroes. There are some who are prominent, others flying just below the headlines, and some who are just ordinary people, unsung heroes. Why not describe these categories and then have the students name people they think are good examples for each one. Ask them to jot down some heroes on television or in the movies and share the list in small groups and perhaps ask them how these heroes differ from real life heroes. Consider having an “expert” panel of three or four students review hero nominations submitted by small discussion groups and then select the winner(s). At home you can be the equivalent of the panel and ask your adolescent(s) to make a nomination for you to review and then discuss with them. Find some YouTube videos of possible hero candidates from the past few years giving a speech or being interviewed. Also, create a small collection of related news stories you might have them read. A fun idea to me, with a serious side, would be to ask them to come up with nominees for prominent anti-heroes, individuals who demonstrate a lack of courage and appear to place self-interest above consideration of the greater good. I think we all know that students generally enjoy coming up with negative examples. Consider having a debate between students arguing for and against some nominated hero, present or past. The purpose of this exploration isn’t to come up with anything approaching a definitive list of heroes. It is to open their minds and provoke their thinking about the subject in all its facets. And perhaps in the process open our own minds and our own thinking as well. Mark Phillips of Woodacre is a professor emeritus of education at San Francisco State University.
