NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks wavered in afternoon trading on Wall Street Monday at the start of a holiday-shortened week. The S&P 500 rose 0.4%. A handful of technology companies helped support the gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 63 points, or 0.2% as of 1:18 p.m. Eastern time. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite rose 0.7%. Semiconductor giant Nvidia, whose enormous valuation gives it an outsize influence on indexes, rose 3%. Broadcom jumped 5.2% to also help support the broader market. Japanese automakers Honda Motor and Nissan said they are talking about combining in a deal that might also include Mitsubishi Motors. Honda rose 3.8% and Nissan rose 1.6% in Tokyo. Eli Lilly rose 3% after announcing that regulators approved Zepbound as the first and only prescription medicine for adults with sleep apnea. Department store Nordstrom fell 1.7% after it agreed to be taken private by Nordstrom family members and a Mexican retail group in a $6.25 billion deal. The Conference Board said that consumer confidence slipped in December. Its consumer confidence index fell back to 104.7 from 112.8 in November. Wall Street was expecting a reading of 113.8. The unexpectedly weak consumer confidence update follows several generally strong economic reports last week. One report showed the overall economy grew at a 3.1% annualized rate during the summer, faster than earlier thought. The latest report on unemployment benefit applications showed that the job market remains solid. A report on Friday said a measure of inflation the Federal Reserve likes to use was slightly lower last month than economists expected. Worries about inflation edging higher again had been weighing on Wall Street and the Fed. The central bank just delivered its third cut to interest rates this year, but inflation has been hovering stubbornly above its target of 2%. It has signaled that it could deliver fewer cuts to interest rates next year than it earlier anticipated because of concerns over inflation. Expectations for more interest rate cuts have helped drive a 24% gain for the S&P 500 in 2024. That drive included 57 all-time highs this year. Inflation concerns have added to uncertainties heading into 2025, which include the labor market's path ahead and shifting economic policies under an incoming President Donald Trump. "Put simply, much of the strong market performance prior to last week was driven by expectations that a best-case scenario was the base case for 2025," said Brent Schutte, chief investment officer at Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management Company Treasury yields edged higher in the bond market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.58% from 4.53% late Friday. European markets were mostly lower, while markets in Asia gained ground. Wall Street has several other economic reports to look forward to this week. On Tuesday, the U.S. will release its November report for sales of newly constructed homes. A weekly update on unemployment benefits is expected on Thursday. Both went free last week after posting bail bonds of $100,000 for him and $30,000 for her. They're also suspected in thefts from Lululemon stores in Colorado, Utah, New York and Connecticut. They're due back in court next month. Formula 1 expands grid to add General Motors' Cadillac brand and new American team for 2026 season LAS VEGAS (AP) — Formula 1 will expand the grid in 2026 to make room for an American team that is partnered with General Motors. The approval ends years of wrangling that launched a federal investigation into why Colorado-based Liberty Media, would not approve the team initially started by Michael Andretti, who has since stepped aside. The 11th team will be called Cadillac F1 and be run by new Andretti Global majority owners Dan Towriss and Mark Walter. The team will use Ferrari engines its first two years until GM has a Cadillac engine built for competition in time for the 2028 season. Jakes' daughter Sarah Jakes Roberts and her husband Touré Roberts said in a statement on social media late Sunday that Jakes was improving. The Greene County sheriff’s office says Seuk Kim of Springfield, Virginia, was flying from Maryland to Albany, New York, when the plane crashed at about 6:10 p.m. Sunday in a remote area. Officials believe the pilot died from the impact. The surviving dog was hospitalized, while a third dog was not located. The Central High School football team will face off against Edison of Huntington Beach on Saturday, Dec. 14, for the Division 1-A CIF State championship at Saddleback College. It’ll be the Grizzlies’ second state championship game in five seasons. Related Story: Grizzlies’ Impressive Season and Program Success Central is 12-2 ranked No. 20 in the state. The Grizzlies captured their fourth Central Section Division 1-AA football championship (2017, 2018, 2019) by beating Clovis East, 33-24, on Nov. 22. The program’s successes have been under the leadership of head coach Kyle Biggs. Since taking over the program in 2016 the Grizzlies have appeared in six section title games and won the 2019 state championship in Division 1-AA, 34-19, over Sierra Canyon to finish with a 15-0 record. That 2019 state title team included wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who became a first-round NFL draft pick and is in his rookie season with the two-time Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. Another wideout on that Central team, Jeremiah Hunter, has 33 receptions for the University of Washington this season. In 11 seasons, Biggs has a 107-26 career record — two years at Fowler and nine at Central. In the North Regional Final playoff game on Saturday against St. Ignatius College Prep of San Francisco, the night belonged to Brandon Smith as he scored five touchdowns. He rushed for three touchdowns (200 rushing yards), caught a scoring pass, and returned a fumble for a score — accounting for all of Central’s TDs in a 33-23 victory. The victory propelled Central into the state championship game. Dippel has passed for 3,230 yards and 39 touchdowns while rushing 49 times for 378 yards with three touchdowns. Smith powers the ground attack and also anchors the defense. He has rushed for 1,800 yards and 25 touchdowns and made 27 receptions for 260 yards and two touchdowns. On the defensive side, he has 167 tackles, two interceptions, and 3.5 sacks.
