He was 87. The theater’s current artistic director, David Ivers, and managing director, Suzanne Appel, announced Tuesday that Benson died Saturday of natural causes. “Martin was a shining light for South Coast Repertory, a pioneer here and in our field,” Ivers said in a statement. “Kind, thoughtful and deeply curious, Martin was always ready with a poignant word, a handshake of support and an appetite for the work. He will be sorely missed, but his fine example of craft and leadership endures.” A Northern California native, Benson co-founded the Orange Country theater with fellow founding artistic director David Emmes in 1964, after the two San Francisco State graduates collaborated on a 1963 production of Arthur Schnitzler’s “La Ronde” at Long Beach’s Off-Broadway Theatre. The company opened its first, 75-seat venue in Newport Beach in 1965 and moved to a 217-seat house in Costa Mesa in 1967. Its current Costa Mesa complex came to be upon raising $3.5 million and receiving a donation of land in 1978 for a 507-seat theater, one now complemented by 336- and 95-seat stages. The Folino Theatre Center was renamed the David Emmes/Martin Benson Theatre Center in 2014. During their tenure, Benson and Emmes established South Coast Repertory as a major player in the regional theater landscape, balancing stagings of classic works with notable commissions and championships of new plays and musicals. The theater gave an early-career boost to numerous now-established playwrights, including Donald Margulies (“Sight Unseen,” “Collected Stories”), Richard Greenberg (“Three Days of Rain”), Craig Lucas (“Prelude to a Kiss”) and Jose Rivera (“References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot”). In 1988, SCR received the Regional Theatre Tony Award for Distinguished Achievement from the American Theatre Wing, highlighting its achievements in new play development. Upon accepting the award, Emmes reaffirmed a commitment “to nurture and support that endangered species, the American playwright, in whose hands rest the future vitality of all our theater,” while Benson added a local note of gratitude: “We want to thank an Orange County audience that has taken some very adventurous leaps with us, and we believe, very satisfying ones, both for them and for us.” Upon directing South Coast Repertory’s first show — Moliere’s “Tartuffe,” staged at the Newport Beach Ebell Club — Benson went on to helm a total of 119 SCR productions over the next six decades. He won directing honors from the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle awards an unprecedented seven times, three of which lauded his stagings of George Bernard Shaw works (“Major Barbara,” “Misalliance” and “Heartbreak House”). And one LADCC award honored his world-premiere production of Margaret Edson’s “Wit,” which Benson also directed at Seattle Repertory Theatre and Houston’s Alley Theatre and went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1999. He closed his SCR directing career with the 2020 production of John Patrick Shanley’s “Outside Mullingar.” Benson also acted in 11 SCR productions, served as the scenic designer in eight, the costume designer in five and the co-director for one, and also served on the theater’s board of directors. He mentored the next generation of theater leaders, including Oanh Nguyen, executive artistic director of Anaheim’s Chance Theater, who began a Theatre Communications Group New Generations Program residency at SCR in 2010. “Martin was a profound influence in my life, and I am deeply grateful for the many years of friendship, mentorship and care we shared,” Nguyen told The Times in an email. “Martin was a mentor to so many. He had a way of believing in people, often before they believed in themselves. And that was definitely the case with me and the Chance Theater.” Benson and Emmes received the L.A. Ovation lifetime achievement award in 1995, the United States Institute for Theatre Technology’s Thomas DeGaetani Award in 1998, and the Margo Jones Medal in 2008. In 2011, SCR’s Board of Trustees established the Emmes/Benson Founders Endowment in their honor. Beyond the stage, Benson was an avid pilot, as well as a tennis and softball player who also built and raced cars as a teenager. Though he built his career in Southern California, he remained loyal to his hometown sports teams: the San Francisco Giants and the San Francisco 49ers. Benson is survived by his stepson Justin Krumb. SCR will dedicate the Dec. 20 performance of “A Christmas Carol” to Benson and dim the theater’s lights in his honor. The theater will also host a celebration of Benson’s life in the new year, in collaboration with his family.
NEW YORK — U.S. stock indexes rose to more records Wednesday after tech companies talked up how much of a boost they’re getting from the artificial intelligence boom. The Standard & Poor’s 500 climbed 0.6% to add to what’s set to be one of its best years of the millennium. It’s the 56th time the index has hit an all-time high this year after climbing in 11 of the last 12 days. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.7%, while the Nasdaq composite added 1.3% to its own record. Salesforce helped pull the market higher after delivering stronger revenue for the latest quarter than analysts expected, though its profit fell just short. Chief Executive Mark Benioff highlighted the company’s artificial intelligence offering for customers, saying “the rise of autonomous AI agents is revolutionizing global labor, reshaping how industries operate and scale.” The stock price of the company, which helps businesses manage their customers, jumped 11%. Marvell Technology leaped even more after delivering better results than expected, up 23.2%. CEO Matt Murphy said the semiconductor supplier is seeing strong demand from AI and gave a forecast for profit in the upcoming quarter that topped analysts’ expectations. All the optimistic talk helped Nvidia, the company whose chips are powering much of the move into AI, rally 3.5%. It was the strongest force pushing upward on the S&P 500 by far. They helped offset an 8.9% drop for Foot Locker, which reported profit and revenue that fell short of analysts’ expectations. CEO Mary Dillon said the company is taking a more cautious view, and it cut its forecasts for sales and profit this year. Dillon pointed to how keen customers are for discounts and how soft demand has been outside of Thanksgiving week and other key selling periods. Retailers overall have offered mixed signals about how resilient U.S. shoppers can remain. Their spending has been one of the main reasons the U.S. economy has avoided a recession that earlier seemed inevitable after the Federal Reserve increased interest rates to crush inflation. But shoppers are now contending with still-high prices and a slowing job market. This week’s highlight for Wall Street will be Friday’s jobs report from the U.S. government, which will show how many people employers hired and fired last month. A narrower report released Wednesday morning suggested that employers in the private sector increased their payrolls by less last month than economists expected. Hiring in manufacturing was the weakest since the spring, according to Nela Richardson, chief economist at ADP. The report strengthened traders’ expectations that the Fed will cut its main interest rate again when it meets in two weeks. The Fed began easing its main interest rate from a two-decade high in September, hoping to offer more support for the job market. The central bank had appeared set to continue cutting rates into next year, but the election of Donald Trump has scrambled Wall Street’s expectations somewhat. Trump’s preference for higher tariffs and other policies could lead to higher inflation, which could alter the Fed’s plans. Fed Chair Jerome H. Powell said Wednesday that the central bank can afford to cut rates cautiously because inflation has slowed from its peak two years ago and the economy remains sturdy. A separate report Wednesday said healthcare, finance and other businesses in the U.S. services sector are continuing to grow, but not by as much as before and not by as much as economists expected. One respondent from the construction industry told the survey from the Institute for Supply Management that the Fed’s rate cuts haven’t pulled down mortgage rates as much as hoped. Plus, “the unknown effect of tariffs clouds the future.” In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.18% from 4.23% late Tuesday. On Wall Street, Campbell’s sank 6.2% for one of the S&P 500’s sharper losses despite increasing its dividend and reporting a stronger profit than analysts expected. Its revenue fell short of Wall Street’s expectations, and the National Football League’s Washington Commanders hired Campbell’s CEO, Mark Clouse, as its team president. Gains for airline stocks helped offset that drop after JetBlue Airways said it saw stronger bookings for travel in November and December after the presidential election. It also said it’s benefiting from lower fuel prices, as well as lower costs due to improved on-time performance. JetBlue jumped 8.3%, while Southwest Airlines climbed 3.5%. All told, the S&P 500 rose 36.61 points to 6,086.49. The Dow climbed 308.51 points to 45,014.04, and the Nasdaq composite rallied 254.21 points to 19,735.12. In stock markets abroad, South Korea’s Kospi sank 1.4% after a night full of drama in Seoul. He revoked the martial law declaration six hours later. Matt Gaetz’s (R-Fla.) congressional seat in the 119th Congress appears to be up in the air in the hours after he withdrew his bid to become U.S. attorney general in the Trump administration on Nov. 21. Several Floridians have already announced their candidacy to be his replacement. Gaetz won a decisive reelection victory in Florida’s First Congressional District on Nov. 5. However, on Nov. 13, he submitted a resignation letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) for the remainder of his current term and announced his intention not to take the oath of office on Jan. 3, 2025. Gaetz sent a similar letter to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who called his secretary of state, Cord Byrd, to begin preparations for a special election. Shortly after Gaetz ended his pursuit to be attorney general, his wife Ginger tweeted a picture of the two of them on the steps of the Capitol Building with the caption, “the end of an era.” It is unclear at the time of publication whether or not Gaetz would be able to retract his intention not to take the oath of office and uphold his reelection victory, or if he could or would attempt to reclaim it by running in the special election. No date has been confirmed for that election. However, it has been expected that the winner of that election will serve the near-entirety of Gaetz’s term, and several eager Floridians have already announced their candidacies. In her announcement on social media platform X, she wrote, “I want to do what is best for our country ... helping President Trump with the Make America Great Again agenda!” Salzman is from Pensacola, Florida, and has represented Florida’s first state district in the capital of Tallahassee since 2020. Her campaign website touts her work over that time on several issues, including border security, veterans support, mental health, education, and fighting the spread of fentanyl. John Frankman, a former Green Beret and captain in the special forces, and one of the thousands of servicemen and women pulled from the armed forces for declining to take the COVID-19 vaccine, has also announced his candidacy. He was Gaetz’s guest at the State of the Union address and continues to be vocal about holding the government accountable for the vaccine mandates. He has also called for the abolishment of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). “I fought for our freedoms in the Army, and I’m ready to do it again,” Frankman wrote on X. Keith Gross is another candidate. The army veteran, pilot, and venture capitalist already earned an endorsement from the College Republicans of Florida State University. Gross told voters on X that he is “a Constitutional, America First conservative running for Congress to keep Washington out of your life.” He has called for the abolition of both the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), which sits within the Justice Department, and the Department of Education. Gross also took to X in reaction to Gaetz’s decision and called for DeSantis to appoint Gaetz to Sen. Marco Rubio’s soon-to-be-vacant Senate seat. Meanwhile, Democrat Gay Valimont is making another attempt to secure Gaetz’s seat despite losing the Nov. 5 election by more than 30 percent of the vote. “After Matt Gaetz resigned just days after voters entrusted him with their representation, it’s clear: our district deserves better,” her campaign said on X. “Gay is ready to bring accountability, integrity, and real solutions to Congress—and she’s here to stay and fight for you.” Additionally, Florida’s current chief financial officer and fire marshal, Jimmy Patronis, announced that he is “strongly considering” throwing his hat into the ring. “We’ve got a historic opportunity to fight the swamp, end lawfare, and return power back into the hands of Americans,” he wrote on X on Nov. 19. DeSantis has also requested a special election for Rep. Mike Waltz’s seat in Florida’s sixth district. Waltz was nominated to become Trump’s national security adviser—a traditionally non-Cabinet position that Trump indicated he may elevate this term.
Calin Georgescu, the far-right figure who shocked Romania by taking the lead in the first round of the country’s presidential election, is a pro-Russian, anti-vaxxer radical with a gift for social media. Barely known outside Romania, Georgescu’s popularity surged ahead of Sunday’s vote with viral TikTok campaigns calling for an end to aid for Ukraine and sounding a sceptical note on NATO. Georgescu, who ran as an independent, has attracted a sizeable following on platforms such as YouTube for years, away from the mainstream media. In one anti-vaccination video, the 62-year-old can be seen stripping down to jump into a snow-covered lake high in the mountains, while praising his “faith in God” and the strength of his “immune system”. Several of his TikTok videos have been viewed between two and three million times, with messages like “for Romania, for peace” especially resonating with voters worried about the war in neighbouring Ukraine. Few reporters were present when Georgescu cast his ballot on Sunday. Pre-election polls did not see him in the runoff, and even less predicted that he would get 23 percent of the vote to top the candidates. “The Internet is the only place where there is freedom of expression,” he said in a recent video. – ‘Saviour’ – Georgescu’s success can partially be attributed to him flying “under the radar”, sociologist Gelu Duminica told AFP. Unlike his opponents, Georgescu did not participate in debates with other candidates and thus was “not attacked by anyone” or his record “dismantled”, he added. Many undecided voters, who felt disappointed by the established parties, saw him as a “saviour” as there are so few leaders capable of “uniting them”, the expert said. Maria Chis, 70, said Georgescu appeared to be “a man of integrity, serious and patriotic.” A graduate of the University of Bucharest, the agricultural engineer began his career in 1992 in the environment ministry before joining the foreign ministry. In the 2010s, Georgescu had been suggested as a possible prime minister. During the Covid pandemic, he became a vocal vaccine-critic, frequently spreading his conspiracy-laden narratives. Once linked to Romania’s far-right AUR party — which tapped George Simion as their candidate in the presidential ballot — Georgescu distanced himself from it after taking a number of controversial positions. – Admirer of Putin – Georgescu has defended a notorious anti-Semite, Corneliu Codreanu, the leader of the Iron Guard between the wars, and fascist Marshal Ion Antonescu. On several occasions, he has denounced NATO as a “weak” organisation, even though Romania has emerged as a key player on the alliance’s eastern flank. He attacked the alliance’s anti-missile system based in Deveselu — which Russia has slammed as a threat — and opposed aid to Ukraine, refusing to be “dragged into a conflict that is not ours”. Romania has a long border with Ukraine. Although the Kremlin said on Monday that it was not “very familiar” with Georgescu, several years ago he expressed admiration for Vladimir Putin, saying he is “one of the rare leaders” worthy of the name, and known for “Russian wisdom”. For political scientist Remus Stefureac, spectacular rise of Georgescu is “unprecedented” in Romania’s democratic history. In a recent update to the popular mobile game "Fantasy Beast Palu," developer SoftArc Gaming has made a controversial decision to remove the throwing Poke Balls summoning mechanism, sparking mixed reactions among players and fans of the game.
While this approach worked well for some in the short term, the reality is that the passive income generated from savings and investments is not always sufficient to cover rising living costs in the long run. Inflation, economic instability, and unexpected expenses can quickly erode savings, making it challenging to maintain a desirable quality of life solely through passive means.Despite the high stakes and tense atmosphere in the operating room, the skilled surgical team managed to successfully extract the tip of the knife, much to the relief of everyone involved. In conclusion, Arsenal's consideration of bolstering their left winger position is a positive move that could help address some of the team's attacking deficiencies. However, it is imperative for the Gunners to also focus on improving their overall attacking play and increasing their goal threat from open play. By working on their movement, creativity, and decision-making in the final third, Arsenal can look to climb the expected goals rankings and become a more formidable attacking force in the Premier League. The 2-1 loss suffered by Wolves at the hands of their opponents has exposed the team's defensive frailties and offensive inefficiencies. Conceding crucial goals and struggling to convert chances into goals, Wolves have found themselves falling behind early in matches and struggling to mount successful comebacks. The team's lack of composure and resilience under pressure has been a major contributing factor to their recent string of defeats.
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim hailed Arsenal as one of the best set-piece teams he has ever faced following the 2-0 defeat at Arsenal. The Gunners took two points out of Liverpool’s lead at the summit of the Premier League after Jurrien Timber and William Saliba struck in the second half – both from corners – to condemn Amorim to his first defeat as United boss. The hosts’ second-half strikes took their goals-from-corners tally to 22 since the start of last season – a statistic that is unmatched by any other team in the division. Asked if Arsenal are one of the best teams he has come up against on corners, Amorim replied: “If you follow the Premier League for a long time you can see that. “You have seen in all Arsenal games that every team have had problems with that (corners). And the difference today was the set-pieces. “You see a goal and then the momentum changed, and it is really hard for us to take the full control of the game after that.” Timber leaned into Rasmus Hojlund at the front post before diverting Declan Rice’s set-piece into the back of Andre Onana’s net after 54 minutes to send Arsenal into the lead. Thomas Partey’s header from Saka’s corner then deflected in off Saliba’s shoulder with 17 minutes left. The Arsenal supporters cheered raucously every time they won a corner – landing 13 in all without reply. However, Arteta moved to play down the significance of Arsenal’s set-piece threat. “We need that, but we want to be very dangerous and very effective from every angle and every phase of play,” said Arteta. “Today we could have scored from open play like we did against West Ham and Sporting. Last year we scored the most goals in the history of this football club. “Not because of only set-pieces, but because of a lot of things that we have. We want to create individual and magic moments, too.” Arsenal’s win against United – the first time they have recorded four victories in a row against the Red Devils in the league – was their fourth in succession since the international break. They will head to Fulham on Sunday bidding to keep the momentum going. Arteta continued: “The will to win is there. We try our best to do that. We won four in a row, but it doesn’t matter. We have to go to Fulham now, try to be better than them and try win the game. “It’s every three days that we play. It’s a crazy schedule. We’re going to need everybody and to mentally be very strong.”

Noah Berger | Getty Images In 2022, Amazon introduced the Buy with Prime button, allowing premium subscribers to make purchases using their Amazon account even when shopping on other websites. Now the company is bringing a similar concept to its cloud-computing business. At its Reinvent conference in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Amazon Web Services said a new Buy with AWS button will be available for cloud software partners to embed on their sites as a way for customers to pay. AWS is the leading provider of cloud infrastructure, ahead of Microsoft and Google , reeling in over $100 billion in revenue in the past four quarters. Prominent cloud software vendors like Databricks, Wiz and Workday run their products on top of AWS, as well as other clouds, and will now be able to sell services directly to users with AWS accounts via the new button. The checkout option will allow buyers to take advantage of Amazon discounts. "The intention here is to increase customer loyalty and partner loyalty and, ultimately, win rates," Matt Yanchyshyn, AWS' vice president of marketplace and partner services, told CNBC in an interview. For software companies, the only requirement is that they need to be selling their products through the AWS Marketplace. Amazon reduced fees to 3% or lower in some cases this year, after Microsoft and Google decreased their rates . On the consumer side, Amazon has an estimated 180 million Prime subscribers in the U.S. The $139 annual subscription includes speedy shipping as well as two-hour grocery delivery and digital services like Prime Video and Amazon Music. Retailers that want to take advantage of Prime's massive customer base can pay a fee to add Buy with Prime to their site, and utilize Amazon's fulfillment network when purchases are made using the button. Amazon said in September that Buy with Prime orders through merchants' sites are up more than 45% this year from a year earlier. Buy with AWS has one key difference in that it's free for software companies to embed. Because the services are running on top of AWS, the purchases result in more revenue for Amazon. watch now VIDEO 3:13 03:13 AWS CEO Matt Garman: Generative AI offers huge opportunity to improve productivity Closing Bell "Buy with Prime is a separate initiative, but we're very close to that team and collaborate on technical implementation," Yanchyshyn said. He added that, while "we definitely sort of trade notes on success," Buy with AWS is "ultimately a very different use case." Yanchyshyn said that Matt Garman, who was tapped to lead AWS earlier this year, is focused on making partners the center of the customer journey. "It's not lip service. He means it," Yanchyshyn said. Databricks has enjoyed a clean integration with Microsoft's cloud since Microsoft started selling a service called Azure Databricks in 2018. Setting up Databricks on AWS has been more complicated, said David Meyer, senior vice president of product management at the data analytics software startup. Buy with AWS should lead to a higher share of revenue coming from Amazon deployments, he said. "We should really see an acceleration of people that go and use it on AWS, because it's so easy," Meyer said. "I would say that this will give AWS the advantage over other clouds, because AWS will be simpler than the other ones, much like historically Azure was simpler for Databricks." Workday plans to employ the button on its Adaptive Planning product, stemming from the $1.5 billion acquisition of Adaptive Insights in 2018. The company, which sells finance and human resources software, wants to see if procurement will be faster when buyers use the button and go through the AWS Marketplace. "Can we get software in the hands of business users faster with this? That's the theory that were testing with this capability," said Matthew Brandt, Workday's senior vice president of global partners. Brandt said that if the evaluation goes well, Workday could use the button for more products. "We have buyers who are not as familiar with us who are very familiar with AWS," he said. "It validates Workday as a potential provider." Ed Anderson, a vice president at industry researcher Gartner, said he wouldn't be surprised to see other cloud providers launch buy buttons for third-party websites. "It's generally all upside," he said. Roma and Napoli complete the top five, both teams displaying impressive form in the early stages of the season. Roma, under the guidance of Paulo Fonseca, have been a revelation with their attacking brand of football. The likes of Edin Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have been instrumental in Roma's success, scoring crucial goals and creating chances for their teammates. Napoli, on the other hand, have been a defensively solid unit under Gennaro Gattuso, conceding the fewest goals in the league. With the creative talents of Lorenzo Insigne and Hirving Lozano, Napoli pose a serious threat to the top teams.

In an emergency cabinet meeting convened shortly after the election results were announced, the Somali government described the election process as “illegal” and vowed to take immediate legal action against both Madobe and the electoral process. In a formal legal document, the cabinet outlined several grounds for challenging the election, citing violations of Somali law and irregularities in the electoral process. Among the primary allegations are: As part of its response, the federal cabinet has ordered Somalia’s Prosecutor General to initiate legal proceedings against the election process, calling for a case to be brought before the Supreme Court to challenge the legitimacy of the election and seek to nullify Madobe’s re-election. This latest development marks a significant escalation in the already tense relations between the Somali federal government and the Jubaland State of Somalia, which is led by Madobe. The dispute between Mogadishu and Kismayo now enters a critical phase, with the federal government asserting its legal authority to intervene in the internal affairs of regional states. The legal challenge is expected to heighten political tensions, possibly leading to a prolonged legal battle that could further polarize the country’s political landscape. Supporters of Ahmed Madobe have defended the election, claiming it was conducted according to the region’s constitutional procedures and that it represents the will of the people of Jubaland. However, critics have long accused Madobe of consolidating power and manipulating political processes to remain in office. HORSEED MEDIA
