Kushner, whose job requires Senate confirmation, is the latest of Trump’s picks to have close ties with the incoming president. Kushner’s son, Jared Kushner, is married to Ivanka Trump, and was a close advisor to Trump during his first presidency. “I am pleased to nominate Charles Kushner, of New Jersey, to serve as the US Ambassador to France. He is a tremendous business leader, philanthropist, & dealmaker, who will be a strong advocate representing our country & its interests,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. “Charlie is the founder & chairman of Kushner Companies, one of the largest & most successful privately held real estate firms in the nation. Generative AI (GenAI) is changing the game for businesses and becoming a new tool for fraudsters. Regulating AI and expanding the role of technology actors in the financial services sector is essential to curb the evolution of fraud. According to the 2024 State of Scams Report by & , banking fraud and scams led to losses of US$1 Trillion Globally. These significant losses highlight that it is more important than ever for banks to stay one step ahead of criminals. Banks need to shift from responding to fraud to preventing it. With existing tactics like social engineering, access to sensitive information released on the dark web due to data breaches, social media, and stolen banking data, fraudsters can massively enhance their scams. Not only can fraudsters create new identities faster, but GenAI also lends these identities greater credibility. The ability to create fake images, videos, or even false voice recordings allows fraudsters to construct a character with its own fabricated identity from scratch. With the capacity to pass authentication checks, generative AI becomes a powerful tool for financial crime. In this context, banks will be tempted to question the authenticity of every interaction as these tools become more widespread and advanced. Thanks to generative AI, call centers can now quickly gather information about their targets, learn organizational operations, and tailor attacks to specific banks. This is particularly concerning for new account fraud and account opening requests. Criminals can use GenAI tools to learn the different layouts and steps of a bank’s screens. With this knowledge of how different organizations function, criminals can write scripts to quickly fill out forms and create seemingly credible identities to commit account opening fraud. Banks will no longer only need to ask, “Is this the right person?” but also, “Is my client human or AI?” Businesses need advanced fraud prevention tools to protect themselves against AI-driven threats. AI-powered fraud detection systems enable organizations to analyze vast amounts of transaction data in real-time, uncover hidden patterns and warning signals that traditional methods might miss. Alerts generated by AI should include clear explanations so that human analysts can understand the reasoning behind potential issues and make informed decisions. AI algorithms can be biased and require constant monitoring and improvement. This is why human expertise remains a crucial element in AI-based decision-making. Banks can use AI to take proactive measures by predicting future risks through risk assessment. However, banks using AI for credit evaluation or fraud detection, among other applications, must ensure their systems are effective, ethical, transparent, and accountable. Collaboration is becoming key, as banks are increasingly joining forces with other financial institutions, including fintechs and regtechs. The goal is to share data and knowledge to strengthen defenses against cross-border fraud systems. However, banks are hesitant to share information if they fear exposing themselves to legal issues. To improve data sharing and collaboration, regulators must clarify or ease their stance toward banks. The goal is collaboration, but greater clarity is needed at the highest levels to ensure data is shared correctly. Financial institutions can also optimize resource allocation with data-driven insights, focusing their attention on high-risk cases. This reduces the need for exhaustive manual investigations into every transaction, allowing teams to prioritize their efforts effectively. As a result, organizations can enhance efficiency and reduce costs by preventing the most significant fraud cases. Banks need AI and machine learning to detect and prevent fraud in real-time. Fraud analytics not only help reduce potential losses but also build customer trust in their banks. Fraud analytics combines artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and predictive analytics for advanced data analysis, enabling banks to process large volumes of data and quickly derive insights to respond in real-time to suspected fraud. Based on our experience with US banks, these banks are now able to detect half of potentially fraudulent transactions. However, the use of AI and machine learning has enabled them to detect 60% of fraud, preventing millions in potential fraud losses. Additionally, GenAI capabilities have reduced false positives by 40%, allowing banks to provide a more transparent and frictionless customer experience. In the era of big data, banks can no longer rely solely on traditional rule-based systems to detect fraudulent transactions. Fraudsters quickly learn a bank’s rules and find ways to commit fraud without being detected. Each new fraud tactic brings new learning, pushing banks into an endless game of cat and mouse. For banks and financial institutions, the evolving regulatory landscape around AI presents both challenges and opportunities. On one hand, institutions must be agile in updating their AI-driven processes to comply with new guidelines while considering potential liabilities. On the other hand, adherence to these principles can strengthen customer and stakeholder trust, which is highly valuable in the financial world. No. 10 Maryland holds off George Mason late, 66-56 in a matchup of unbeatensDaily Post Nigeria CBN’s interest rate hike will worsen imbalances in real sectors — CPPE Home News Politics Metro Entertainment Sport Business CBN’s interest rate hike will worsen imbalances in real sectors — CPPE Published on November 26, 2024 By Ogaga Ariemu The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, CPPE, said the continued hawkish stance of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, by further tightening the interest rate to 27.75 per cent will worsen imbalances in the country’s real sectors. The director of CPPE, Muda Yusuf, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday. This comes as DAILY POST reports that the CBN Monetary Policy Committee raised interest by 25 basis points to 27.50 per cent. Reacting, CPPE stated that the CBN’s decision to further raise the interest rate is troubling amid the declining growth recorded in the country’s critical sectors of the economy. CPPE noted that Nigeria’s 3.46 per cent growth in domestic product in the third quarter of 2024 showed a clear disconnect between the financial services sector and the real economy. This comes as CPPE said that manufacturing, agriculture, real estate, air transport, and textile sectors need monetary and fiscal support, not interest rate hikes. “It is troubling that despite the declining growth performance of many critical sectors of the economy as evidenced in the third quarter GDP report, the MPC still continued its tightening stance. “The GDP sectoral performance report also revealed a glaring disconnect between the financial services sector and the real economy. “The financial services sector recorded a growth of 32 per cent, while agriculture and manufacturing grew by 1.14 per cent and 0.92 per cent. This hawkish disposition would deepen these distortions. “Meanwhile strategic economic sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing and real estate recorded declines in growth in the third quarter. Air transport and textile remained in recession. These sectors need monetary and fiscal support, not a further tightening of monetary conditions. “In the meantime, we urge the CBN to upscale its support for development finance institutions to make up for the financing challenges created by the sustained tight monetary policy regime,” he stated. Martensville-Warman Early Years Family Resource Centre opensTom Brady is currently making his way through his first season as a football commentator with Fox Sports, but everyone knows him best as the legendary quarterback who dominated the NFL for over two decades. And along the way, it sounds like he got some help from one of his top rivals in Peyton Manning. Brady's career was filled with accolades and achievements, and a quick look at his numbers will show you why he's regarded as the greatest player in NFL history. His crowning accomplishment was winning seven Super Bowls, which is more than any franchise has won in the history of the league. Of course, Brady wasn't able to win games on his own, and sometimes, he got a helping hand from his competitors. That was what happened with him and Manning, as Brady revealed that arguably his biggest rival introduced him to a play that the New England Patriots ran frequently with Rob Gronkowski. "I met with Peyton Manning for like three days, and he taught me the play that he used to run a lot," Brady said in a video he posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. "We ended up installing the play in our offense, and we got Rob Gronkowski. It ended up, probably half of Gronk's receiving yards were on this concept. I'm like, 'Thanks, Peyton!'" Thanks Peyton! pic.twitter.com/vLNzFiCpfs The play in question would see Brady run a play action, which would get the opposing defense's linebackers to come towards the line of scrimmage in anticipation of a run. Instead, it was a pass, and Gronkowski would leak down the seam and get wide open in the middle of the field for Brady to hit him. © Kevin Jairaj-Imagn Images This was a bread and butter play for New England's offense during Brady's time on the field with Gronk. And as it turns out, if it weren't for Manning, the Patriots may have never discovered it, which could have drastically altered how they ran their offense. Brady and Manning were competitors, but they are also good friends off the field. Considering how much success Brady and Gronkowski had together, though, he's probably wishing he didn't give this play away to arguably the greatest quarterback of all time. Brazil's former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro was fully aware of and actively participated in a coup plot to remain in office after his defeat in the 2022 election, according to a Federal Police report unsealed Tuesday. Federal Police last Thursday formally accused Bolsonaro and 36 other people of attempting a coup. They sent their 884-page report to the Supreme Court, which lifted the seal. The unsealed document provides a first glimpse of several testimonies that describe the former president as one of the key leaders of the plot, and not a mere observer. "The evidence collected throughout the investigation shows unequivocally that then-president Jair Messias Bolsonaro planned, acted and was directly and effectively aware of the actions of the criminal organization aiming to launch a coup d'etat and eliminate the democratic rule of law, which did not take place due to reasons unrelated to his desire," the document said. At another point, it says: "Bolsonaro had full awareness and active participation." Bolsonaro, who had repeatedly alleged without evidence that the country's electronic voting system was prone to fraud, called a meeting in December 2022, during which he presented a draft decree to the commanders of the three divisions of the armed forces, according to the police report, signed by four investigators. The decree would have launched an investigation into suspicions of fraud and crimes related to the October 2022 vote, and suspended the powers of the nation's electoral court. The navy's commander stood ready to comply, but those from the army and air force objected to any plan that prevented Lula's inauguration, the report said. Those refusals are why the plan did not go ahead, according to witnesses who spoke to investigators. Bolsonaro never signed the decree to set the final stage of the alleged plan into action. Bolsonaro has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing or awareness of any plot to keep him in power or oust his leftist rival and successor, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. "No one is going to do a coup with a reserve general and half a dozen other officers. What is being said is absurd. For my part, there has never been any discussion of a coup," Bolsonaro told journalists in Brazil's capital Brasilia on Monday. "If someone came to discuss a coup with me, I'd say, that's fine, but the day after, how does the world view us?" he added. "The word 'coup' has never been in my dictionary." The top court has passed the report on to Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet. He will decide whether to formally charge Bolsonaro and put him on trial, or toss the investigation. The former president was formally accused of three crimes: violent elimination of the rule of law, staging a coup d'etat and forming a criminal organization. Rodrigo Rios, a law professor at the PUC university in the city of Curitiba, said Bolsonaro could face up to a minimum of 11 years in prison if convicted on all charges. "A woman involved in the Jan. 8 attack on the Supreme Court received a 17-year prison sentence," Rios told The Associated Press, noting that the former president is more likely to receive 15 years or more if convicted. "Bolsonaro's future looks dark." Ahead of the 2022 election, Bolsonaro repeatedly alleged that the election system, which does not use paper ballots, could be tampered with. The top electoral court later ruled that he had abused his power to cast unfounded doubt on the voting system, and ruled him ineligible for office until 2030. Still, he has maintained that he will stand as a candidate in the 2026 race. Since Bolsonaro left office, he has been targeted by several investigations, all of which he has chalked up to political persecution. Federal Police have accused him of smuggling diamond jewelry into Brazil without properly declaring them and directing a subordinate to falsify his and others' COVID-19 vaccination statuses. Authorities are also investigating whether he incited the Jan. 8, 2022 riot in which his followers ransacked the Supreme Court and presidential palace in Brasilia, seeking to prompt intervention by the army that would oust Lula from power. Bolsonaro had left for the United States days before Lula's inauguration on Jan. 1, 2023 and stayed there three months, keeping a low profile. The police report unsealed Tuesday alleges he was seeking to avoid possible imprisonment related to the coup plot, and also await the uprising that took place a week later. ------ Hughes reported from Rio de JaneiroBrazil's Bolsonaro planned and participated in a 2022 coup plot, unsealed police report allegesVANCOUVER - Global Affairs Canada is warning Canadians in South Korea to avoid demonstrations and exercise caution after the country's president imposed an hours-long period of martial law. VANCOUVER – Global Affairs Canada is warning Canadians in South Korea to avoid demonstrations and exercise caution after the country’s president imposed an hours-long period of martial law. The situation in South Korea arose after President Yoon Suk Yeol imposed martial law on Tuesday, vowing to eliminate what he described as “anti-state” forces from the opposition that controls parliament. Yoon’s declaration triggered tense political drama, as troops surrounded the parliament while 190 lawmakers gathered inside to vote to lift the martial law shortly after it was imposed. Global Affairs Canada has not raised the risk level for Canadians in South Korea but did ask those in the country to monitor local media for the latest information, while following authorities’ instructions, such as curfew orders. A Vancouver-based travel agent says the chaos in Seoul is not likely to have a major effect on Canadian visitor numbers to South Korea. Glynnis Chan, owner of Happy Times Travel, says the martial law dissolved quickly and will likely have minimal impact on people’s travel plans, which tend to be made at least two months in advance. “There’s always some sort of impact, but it really depends on what happens with the situation over the long term,” Chan says. “If nothing more happens, people forget after a week or so about what took place.” Chan says she is not expecting any impact on her business, since Japan is a more popular destination among her customers. Several Korean-Canadian travel agencies in Metro Vancouver declined to comment on the political situation in Seoul. After Yoon’s declaration of martial law, hundreds of protesters gathered in front of the national assembly, waving banners and calling for Yoon’s impeachment, while others scuffled with military troops. The South Korean parliamentary members eventually voted to lift the declaration, with national assembly Speaker Woo Won Shik declaring it “invalid.” Police and military personnel were then seen leaving the assembly’s grounds after Woo’s call for their withdrawal. Jae-Yeon Lim, vice-president of the Canada Korea Business Association, says seeing military personnel clash with protesters and lawmakers brought back “harrowing” memories of the 1980 student-led demonstrations in Gwangju that were violently suppressed. Yoon’s move was the first declaration of martial law since the country’s democratization in 1987, and South Korea’s last previous martial law was in October 1979. “It has been a very difficult experience to see that,” Lim says of the latest martial law declaration. “But that said, I’m really happy to see that ... the national assembly managed to get the majority vote to repeal this, and they managed to do that at the risk of their own lives, even though military was there. “This is a country that will stand up for democracy.” Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. Lim also says there would likely be little impact on bilateral relations or trade between the two countries stemming from the sudden onset of political drama, given how quickly martial law was lifted. “It’s not going to stop business from seeking to expand in Canada,” Lim says. “There’s still a very strong interest to do so from many businesses (in South Korea). “We have yet to see what will happen next, but I think that I’m a little bit reassured in seeing what has transpired ... that people are ready to defend their country and democratic rule-of-law.” — With files from The Associated Press This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 3, 2024.
