More funds to support steel workers and businessesNoneA WOMAN has faced endless problems since the Social Security Administration declared her dead two years ago - and the accident is more common than you'd think. The government wrongly marks thousands of Americans as dead each year, according to federal data. The mistake can prohibit taxpayers from accessing their bank accounts and retirement benefits. It can also prevent people from getting jobs or loans. In 2022, Brooklyn resident Sandra Hazel was shocked to learn she was listed on the SSA's Death Master File. The agency revealed the news to her while she was trying to set up her retirement benefits. READ MORE ON SOCIAL SECURITY "We recently discovered that our records wrongly showed you as deceased," the SSA wrote in a letter to Hazel. "How can you say that I'm deceased when I'm alive?" Hazel said, according to WCBS-TV. The small mistake turned into issues recurring for two years. Last August, the Internal Revenue Service told Hazel her tax return couldn't be processed because her social security number "belongs to someone deceased." Most read in The US Sun "And I'm not getting no benefits from social security, none," Hazel said. "I have rent to pay. I have bills to pay." Hazel has been unable to register for Medicaid because of the mistake. According to the SSA's most recent data from 2019, up to 7,000 Americans end up on the DMF by accident. However, the number of incidents has reportedly dropped by 45% since 2011 due to the rise of electronic records. In a similar clerical error to Hazel's, one woman reported losing access to her money after she was declared dead. If you suspect you've been declared dead by the Social Security Administration, it's important to contact the SSA as soon as possible. You can contact the SSA by: Calling 1-800-772-1213 Visiting your local SSA office Emailing the SSA support team Writing a letter to the following address: Social Security Administration Office of Public Inquiries and Communications Support 1100 West High Rise 6401 Security Blvd. Baltimore, MD 21235 More information can be found on the agency's website . Renee Williams, 66, told Philadelphia's CBS affiliate KYW-TV that the incident has been a "pain in the behind." She made the terrifying discovery that she had been deemed deceased while at a doctor's appointment. "I went to the emergency ward on Friday, and they couldn't get my insurance information," Williams told the outlet. "She said she tried several places and they said it was inactive. They said that I was deceased." The mistake led to devastating consequences for Williams as she reported her monthly Social Security checks have disappeared. "Her benefits, the banks, credit cards, it's a lot," Williams' daughter, Wadeeyah McNeil, said. Read More on The US Sun "It's going to be a while before she gets all this stuff back in order. It'll be a long while." The U.S. Sun has reached out to the SSA for comment.

Mandatory Credit: Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports/ File Photo Joel Dahmen has handled the pressure of closing out a PGA Tour victory, but even that didn't equate to the emotional weight he felt standing over a 5 1/2-foot putt in Georgia on Friday. Miss it, and Dahmen was assured of missing out on fully exempt status on the PGA Tour for 2025. Make it, and he would get to live to fight another weekend. The 37-year-old steadied his hands to drain the putt and make the cut on the number at 1-under par at The RSM Classic on Sea Island, Ga. Dahmen enters the weekend projected to finish 126th in the FedEx Cup Fall standings -- only the top 125 earn fully exempt status for next year. "It was a great putt. I was very nervous," he admitted after the round. "But there's still work to do. It wasn't the game-winner, it was like the half-court shot to get us like at halftime. But without that and the way I played today, I wouldn't have anything this weekend. "I'm hoping I play great this weekend and I hit 36 greens and I just kind of plod my way around and it's super easy, but that's not the way golf is. Really proud of myself today, but there's still work to do." Nothing has come easy this season for the winner of the 2021 Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship. Ranked as high as 58th in the Official World Golf Ranking, Dahmen has plummeted as low as 240th this year while posting a lone Top 10 finish against 10 missed cuts in 28 events. This week marks No. 29, including all eight during the FedEx Fall swing as Dahmen has attempted to improve his FedEx Cup ranking. He finished T14 in Mexico two weeks ago, but hasn't managed better than a T40 in the other six. That included a missed cut in Bermuda last week, which ratcheted the pressure up that much more. "You can't get away from anything. The room's a little more quiet around you. Like a pitcher throwing a no-hitter this week, it's a little different," Dahmen said. "Once I missed the cut in Bermuda last week, stress has been high. "You lay in bed, try to go to sleep, but it's like you're sleeping on the lead of a major every night. That's kind of what it feels like, but a little more stressful than that." Dahmen's chances of securing exempt status appeared bleak after opening with a 73 on Thursday. He fell to 2 over with an opening bogey on No. 1, then managed three birdies over his next 15 holes to set up the all-important putt on 18. When the putt dropped, Dahmen hugged his wife, Lona, and playing partner Mark Hubbard said the all the drama during a Friday round in November caused him to "stress drink." "I'm sorry for them, I'm sorry that they're feeling the way I'm feeling," Dahmen said. "I know my wife has been stressed. I have a lot of great people around me and so it's hard on them, but it's just because they love me and they care about me. "I mean, job's not done. ... We have two more steps to go." If Dahmen doesn't improve his standing at least one spot by the end of the weekend, he will still retain conditional status in the Nos. 126-150 category. Either way, Dahmen -- who gained "every man" fame along with caddie Gino Bonnali in the Netflix documentary "Full Swing" -- said his professional golf story is far from done. "I still got more to write this weekend, for sure, but without having the opportunity to play this weekend, my story would be a lot shorter this year," he said. "What happens this weekend, my story's still not done. I have a lot left in me and I'm going to give my all. "But this weekend's big, for sure." --Field Level Media REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you. Ministers said an extra £15 million will be made available for supply chain businesses and workers affected by changes at Tata’s Port Talbot site in south Wales. Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens said the move means a fund to support businesses across Wales heavily reliant on Tata steel will be increased to £30 million. She also announced that more businesses will be able to apply for the funds, and the value of individual grants is increasing to up to £250,000 for businesses to invest in equipment, property, technology. The Government said there has been “significant demand” on the existing funding, with almost 40 businesses employing 2,000 people having begun the application process. Grants worth millions of pounds are expected to be released in the new year. The increase in funding is in anticipation of more people leaving Tata in early 2025 through the company’s voluntary redundancy scheme. Ms Stevens said: “This Government is acting decisively to support workers and businesses in Port Talbot. “We are doubling the funding available to businesses and workers and widening access to grants to ensure we support as many people as possible. “In just four months we have announced more than £40 million in investment. We said we would back workers and businesses affected by the transition at Port Talbot and we are doing exactly that. “While this remains a very difficult time for Tata workers, their families and the community, we are determined to support workers and businesses in our Welsh steel industry, whatever happens.”

The year in review: Influential people who died in 2024OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is taking some time to reflect after Chrystia Freeland's bombshell resignation, the natural resources minister said on Tuesday. "The prime minister, as I understand it, a number of caucus colleagues have said that the prime minister has said that he will reflect on both the decision that minister Freeland made, but also what he's heard from members of his own caucus," Jonathan Wilkinson said. "I think we all need to give him a little time to reflect, and I respect that fact that he's going to take some time to reflect." Freeland quit as finance minister on Monday morning just hours before she was set to present the government's fall economic statement. That kicked off a day of turmoil on Parliament Hill that began with a morning cabinet meeting and wrapped with an evening meeting of the Liberal caucus, where some members called for Trudeau to step aside as party leader. That includes New Brunswick MP Wayne Long, one of 23 caucus members who signed a letter back in October calling for Trudeau to quit. "We certainly have more MPs than last time. So, if I had to guess how many more right now, I'd say we're probably at 40 to 50 right now," Long said. "But there's a lot more than that. I mean, this is so different than times before." The attempt to oust Trudeau earlier in the fall took up a great deal of oxygen on Parliament Hill, but ultimately failed to garner support from inside the cabinet. This time, Long said, at least five cabinet ministers believe it's time for a change at the top. "I certainly am one to say to my colleagues, to ministers in particular: 'Let's come out of the shadows,'" Long said. "Let's openly, once and for all, state how we feel and let's move forward with what we know has to happen." After the failed coup in October, Liberal MPs told reporters they believed Trudeau was taking time to reflect. But the very next day, he publicly stated his intention to stay on as leader at a press conference. The Liberals have faced three non-confidence votes in the House of Commons this fall and have struggled to advance legislation because of a filibuster on a Conservative privilege motion related to misspending at a now-defunct green technology fund. On Tuesday, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre once again called on NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh to topple the government, criticizing him for voting against the latest non-confidence motion last week. Poilievre said Canada needs a new prime minister because U.S. president-elect Donald Trump can smell weakness from a mile away and the Trudeau government is weak. Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet also said a new Parliament is needed "as soon as possible," and he wants to see an election called in January. Blanchet said Trudeau has lost the political, moral and ethical authority to govern. He said the election should happen as soon as possible in the new year because Canadians do not want a campaign over the holiday season. On Monday, Singh called for Trudeau to step down but did not make a firm comment on whether the NDP would declare non-confidence in the Liberal government. Instead, Singh said "all options are on the table." The NDP, which ended a formal supply-and-confidence agreement to support the Liberals in September, has since voted with the government on all three non-confidence motions. Singh has repeatedly said a Poilievre-led Conservative government would cut things New Democrats have fought for like dental care, pharmacare and other social programs. The Tories are also calling on the House of Commons trade committee to study the tariff threat between the week of Jan. 6 and Jan. 20, the date of Trump's inauguration. The House of Commons is expected to rise for the holiday break on Tuesday and return on January 27. In her resignation letter, Freeland said she's been at odds with Trudeau in the last few weeks over the government's fiscal priorities. She said the government should do away with costly "political gimmicks" and instead set money aside to deal with a potential tariff war with the U.S. Dominic LeBlanc was sworn in as the new finance minister Monday, minutes after the government's fall economic statement was released. The economic update shows the deficit has grown to nearly $62 billion, far beyond the $40-billion target Freeland set earlier this year. It includes $1.3 billion in new spending on measures to beef up the border in response to Trump's threat to impose 25 per cent tariff threats on Canadian goods. LeBlanc, who is also in charge of intergovernmental affairs and democratic institutions, says his main priority as finance minister will be to address affordability issues. He will also continue to oversee the public safety file, implementing new border measures, until Trudeau holds a broader cabinet shuffle. That's expected to happen soon in order to replace ministers who have announced they won't seek re-election. Salt AI Raises $3M, Elevates Aber Whitcomb to CEOThe much-anticipated grand finale of the 59th TAGS Awards 2024, organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka), celebrated excellence in corporate reporting, with a diverse range of organisations – from multinationals and conglomerates to SMEs and NGOs – showcasing their commitment to high standards in financial and non-financial reporting by embracing the principles of transparency, accountability, governance, and sustainability while also leading the way in raising the standards of corporate reporting. Held amidst much celebration at the Shangri-La Colombo on 12 December in the presence of the country’s corporate elite, the event highlighted the transformative role of enriching corporate reporting practices, complemented by a digital edge. Shining at the pinnacle was conglomerate Hayleys PLC, which clinched the coveted Gold award for ‘Overall Excellence in Corporate Reporting,’ while Diesel & Motor Engineering PLC secured the Silver, and both Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC and Softlogic Life Insurance PLC shared the spotlight by jointly taking home the Bronze. Meanwhile, for the first time in the 59-year history of the competition, CA Sri Lanka also integrated Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its evaluation process, underscoring its commitment to innovation and staying at the forefront of global trends. Addressing the gathering, Kuruppu emphasised that numerous technological advancements have been implemented by organisations this year to enhance user-friendly access to information, leveraging artificial intelligence and natural language processing for analysis and interpretation. “While technology drives efficiency, sustainability shapes purpose. The global emphasis on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations has elevated the importance of sustainability in corporate reporting. Although many large-scale corporations and export-oriented businesses have prioritised these efforts, there is still potential for further improvements,” he said, adding that embracing sustainability is not merely a response to global trends but it is a commitment to creating long-term value for all stakeholders. In her speech, Cooray highlighted that, at their best, annual reports excel in disclosure, clarity, and consistency, as they serve as powerful narratives, reflecting an organisation’s values, societal contributions, and roadmap for future growth. She said that these reports are the cornerstone of stakeholder communication, fostering trust, inspiring confidence, and setting benchmarks for responsible corporate conduct. “The TAGS Awards stand as a testament to the importance of these core principles. Since its inception in 1964 under its original banner as the Annual Report Awards, this initiative has inspired organisations for nearly 60 years to achieve the highest standards in reporting,” Cooray said. In addition to the main and special awards, organisations were also honoured across 34 different sectors, showcasing the diversity of corporate reporting excellence across industries.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. , Dec. 19, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- FuriosaAI , an emerging leader in AI semiconductor solutions, is closing out the year with rapid technical and customer progress with its second-generation chip, RNGD (pronounced 'Renegade'). The recently announced AI solution has achieved compelling performance metrics in real-world enterprise deployments meeting the demand for inference with advanced large language and multimodal models. The new performance benchmarks showcase RNGD's ability to meet industry-leading throughput demands for Llama 3.1 models, including the 8B and 70B variants, with additional optimizations already in progress. The company also announced key software features that bring advanced optimization for customers currently sampling RNGD hardware in their production environments. These achievements represent the first phase of Furiosa's vision for AI infrastructure that overcomes the inherent limitations of GPUs. RNGD delivers winning throughput metrics with Llama 3.1 8B and 70B : Building on the AI-native Tensor Contraction Processor (TCP) architecture of RNGD , Furiosa is redefining real-world AI deployments, delivering unmatched performance, programmability, and power efficiency. Furiosa's RNGD recently achieved a throughput of 3,200–3,300 Tokens per Second (TPS) when running the LLaMA 3.1- 8B model. In single-user scenarios, RNGD consistently delivers 40–60 TPS performance. Additionally, RNGD demonstrates exceptional power efficiency, consuming 181W per card, with further optimization efforts underway. Rather than excessively boosting per-user performance, the company aims to maintain performance levels exceeding typical text-reading speeds (10–20 TPS or higher) while optimizing for multi-user environments and achieving a balanced performance approach. Furiosa is advancing the performance and efficiency of the LLaMA 3.1- 70B model. With just two RNGD cards, LLaMA 3.1- 70B can be executed effectively. Currently, a single server supports up to 100 concurrent user queries, with ongoing optimizations aiming to achieve 8,000 TPS per server when equipped with 8 RNGD cards. With the release of SDK v2024.3.0, Furiosa will expand the range of preloaded models. The SDK will also include support for tensor parallelism, enabling seamless processing across multiple elements without requiring model modifications, and a torch.compile, providing the foundation for executing customized models. Integration with HuggingFace Optimum will further empower customers to leverage a broader variety of models. Advanced optimization tools delivered to early RNGD customers: Building on these milestones, domestic and global enterprise customers are conducting tests with Furiosa to find a more efficient solution for scaling the inference of their self-developed models, compared to their existing setup. Their objective is to manage TCO effectively as they prepare for large-scale AI adoption. Furiosa plans to provide a high-quality AI development environment through a powerful and user-friendly SDK optimized for RNGD. The SDK v2024.1.0, currently available through the Early Access Program (EAP), is designed to handle high-performance processing of multiple LLM serving requests. It incorporates optimization techniques such as PagedAttention, Block KV Cache, and Continuous Batching, while also supporting various token sampling methods, including Greedy, Beam Search, and Top-k/p. These features allow developers to seamlessly create AI services customized to meet a wide range of requirements. The SDK and online sample will be available after the release of v2024.3.0. Furiosa remains committed to delivering the most sustainable AI deployment solutions through rigorous optimization at an unprecedented pace. "With RNGD now in customers' hands, we are accelerating the next generation of frontier LLMs to unlock emerging Agentic AI applications—bringing advanced reasoning capabilities to enterprise verticals, all at dramatically lower costs," said June Paik , Co-Founder and CEO of FuriosaAI.
