circus in tagalog Following his ouster on Sunday, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his family have arrived in Russia and have been granted asylum by the Russian authorities, Russian news agencies reported citing a Kremlin source. The Interfax news agency quoted the unnamed source as saying: “President Assad of Syria has arrived in Moscow. Russia has granted them (him and his family) asylum on humanitarian grounds.” What we know so far: Earlier, Two Syrian sources said there was a very high probability that Assad may have been killed in a plane crash as it was a mystery why the plane took a surprise U-turn and disappeared off the map according to data from the Flightradar website. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that he has ordered the military to “seize” a UN-patrolled buffer zone between the Israeli-occupied and Syrian-controlled Golan Heights. He said a 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria “has collapsed”, so he “directed the [military] yesterday to seize the buffer zone and the commanding positions nearby.” “We will not allow any hostile force to establish itself on our border,” he added. The UN buffer zone. — AFP Earlier the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Assad had left office and departed the country after being ousted by Syrian rebels, who ended the 50-year Assad dynasty in a lightning offensive that has raised fears of a new wave of instability in the Middle East. In a statement, the ministry said that Assad had ordered a peaceful handover but did not say where he was now. The ministry denied Russia’s role in talks about his departure and added that Russian military bases in Syria were at a state of high alert, although there was no serious threat to them at the current time. Syria’s army command notified officers that Assad’s regime had ended, a Syrian officer who was informed of the move told Reuters . But the Syrian army later said it was continuing operations against “terrorist groups” in the towns of Hama and Homs and Deraa countryside. Dozens of Syrians entered Assad’s luxurious Damascus home after it was looted on Sunday, an AFP correspondent said, following the fall of the capital to rebel forces. Women, children and men could be seen inspecting the six-storey home and its large garden, with the entrance to the residence burnt down and the rooms completely empty, save some furniture and a portrait of Assad thrown on the floor. Assad, who had crushed all forms of dissent, flew out of Damascus for an unknown destination earlier on Sunday, two senior army officers told Reuters , as rebels said they had entered the capital with no sign of army deployments. “We celebrate with the Syrian people the news of freeing our prisoners and releasing their chains and announcing the end of the era of injustice in Sednaya prison,” the rebels said, referring to a large military prison on the outskirts of Damascus where the Syrian government detained thousands. Thousands in cars and on foot congregated at a main square in Damascus waving and chanting “Freedom” from a half-century of Assad family rule, witnesses said. People with Syrian opposition flags celebrate after Syrian rebels announced that they have ousted President Bashar al-Assad, at Bar Elias, Bekaa Governorate, Lebanon on December 8. — Reuters The dramatic collapse also marks a seismic moment for the Middle East, dealing a massive blow to Russia and Iran, which have lost a key ally at the heart of the region and creating more uncertainty as the Gaza offensive rages. The pace of events has stunned Arab capitals and raised fears of a new wave of regional instability. It marks a turning point for Syria, shattered by more than 13 years of war which has turned cities to rubble, killed hundreds of thousands of people, and forced millions abroad as refugees. Stabilising western areas of Syria captured in the rebels’ advance will be key. Western governments, which have shunned the Assad-led state for years, must decide how to deal with a new administration in which a globally designated terrorist group — Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) — looks set to have influence. HTS, which spearheaded the rebel advances across western Syria, was formerly an al Qaeda affiliate known as the Nusra Front until its leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani, severed ties with the global jihadist movement in 2016. “The real question is how orderly will this transition be, and it seems quite clear that Golani is very eager for it to be an orderly one,” said Joshua Landis, a Syria expert and Director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma. Golani will not want a repeat of the chaos that swept Iraq after US-led forces toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003. “They are going to have to rebuild ... they will need Europe and the US to lift sanctions,” Landis said. HTS is Syria’s strongest rebel group and some Syrians remain fearful it will impose draconian religious rule or instigate reprisals. A Syrian Air plane took off from Damascus airport around the time the capital was reported to have been taken by rebels, according to data from the Flightradar website. The aircraft initially flew towards Syria’s coastal region, a stronghold of Assad’s Alawite sect, but then made an abrupt U-turn and flew in the opposite direction for a few minutes before disappearing off the map. Reuters could not immediately ascertain who was on board. “It disappeared off the radar, possibly the transponder was switched off, but I believe the bigger probability is that the aircraft was taken down...,” said one Syrian source without elaborating. As Syrians expressed joy, Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali said the country should have free elections so Syrians can choose who they want. But that would require a smooth transition in a country with complex competing interests, from fighters to groups with links to the United States, Russia and Turkey. Jalali also said he had been in contact with rebel commander Abu Mohammed al-Golani to discuss managing the current transitional period, marking a notable development in efforts to shape Syria’s political future. Jordan affirmed on Sunday the importance of preserving the stability and security of Syria, the state news agency reported. US President Joe Biden and his team were monitoring the “extraordinary events in Syria” and were in touch with regional partners, the White House said. The Russian Foreign Ministry said Assad left office and departed the country after ordering a peaceful handover of power. In a statement, the ministry did not say where Assad was now and said Russia had not taken part in the talks about his departure. It added that Russia’s military bases in Syria had been put on a state of high alert, but that there was no serious threat to them at the current time. Syria’s civil war, which erupted in 2011 as an uprising against Assad’s rule, dragged in big outside powers, created space for militants to plot attacks around the world and sent millions of refugees into neighbouring states. The frontlines of Syria’s complex civil war were dormant for years. Then fighters once affiliated with Al Qaeda suddenly burst into action, posing the biggest challenge to Assad, who had survived years of gruelling war and international isolation with the help of Russia, Iran and Lebanon’s Hezbollah. But Assad’s allies were focused on and weakened by other crises, leaving Assad at the mercy of his opponents with an army that was not prepared to defend him. Israel, which has severely weakened Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza, will likely celebrate the fall of Assad, another of Iran’s key regional allies. But the prospects of a hardline religious group ruling Syria will likely raise concerns. Thousands of Homs residents poured onto the streets after the army withdrew from the central city, dancing and chanting “Assad is gone, Homs is free” and “Long live Syria and down with Bashar al-Assad”. Men hold flags as people celebrate, after Syrian rebels announced that they have ousted President Bashar al-Assad, in Qamishli, Syria on December 8. — Reuters Rebels fired into the air in celebration, and youths tore down posters of the Syrian president, whose territorial control has collapsed in a dizzying week-long retreat by the military. The fall of Homs gave the insurgents control over Syria’s strategic heartland and a key highway crossroads, severing Damascus from the coastal region that is the stronghold of Assad’s Alawite sect and where his Russian allies have a naval base and air base. Homs’ capture is also a powerful symbol of the rebel movement’s dramatic comeback. Swathes of Homs were destroyed by gruelling siege warfare between the rebels and the army years ago. The fighting ground down the insurgents, who were forced out. Rebels freed thousands of detainees from the city prison. Security forces left in haste after burning their documents. The head of Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces Mazloum Abdi said on Sunday on X: “We are witnessing historic moments in Syria as the authoritarian regime in Damascus falls. This change presents an opportunity to build a new Syria founded on democracy and justice, ensuring the rights of all Syrians.” Iran’s embassy in the Syrian capital was stormed by rebels on Sunday following their capture of Damascus and the fall of Iran-allied Bashar al-Assad, Iranian state TV reported. “It is said that the Iranian embassy was stormed alongside nearby stores by an armed group different from the group now controlling [most of] Syria,” Iranian state TV said, referring to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) which spearheaded the rebel advances across western Syria. Footage from inside the embassy’s premises was shared by Saudi Arabia’s al-Arabiya channel, showing that assailants had rummaged through furniture and documents inside the building and damaged some windows.Reuters could not verify the videos. People load items looted from the Iranian embassy onto trucks in the Syrian capital Damascus on December 8. — AFP Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Sunday that Iranian diplomats had vacated the embassy in the early morning, prior to any assault. Iran’s state TV said HTS had guaranteed there would be no disturbance to the Sayeda Zeinab and Sayeda Ruqqaya shrines in Damascus. Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency said on Sunday that all Iranian servants of the shrines returned to Iran prior to the capture of Damascus by rebels. Chargers punch ticket to playoffs with easy win over PatriotsIt is truly a headline many Calgary Flames fans thought they may never see. Left winger Jonathan Huberdeau has been tremendously disappointing ever since he was acquired from the Florida Panthers back in the summer of 2022. As the centrepiece of a trade package for young All-Star Matthew Tkachuk and a former 115 point scorer himself, Huberdeau had immense pressure to perform. Playing for a Canadian market and signing a franchise record 8-year, $84 million contract drove expectations up even further. In his first season in Cowtown, Huberdeau put up just 15 goals and 40 assists in 79 games to set an NHL record for the largest season-to-season point drop off ever recorded. Many pointed the finger at then-head-coach Darryl Sutter, whom Huberdeau and other veterans clashed with frequently. Some stated that the move across the continent and overall adjustment to life in the Great White North was the culprit. However, with a new head coach and more social stability in 2023-24, he scored only 12 times and had 52 points in 81 games, along with a career-worst minus-29 rating. Many fans and media personalities were quick to point out that Huberdeau’s 2023-24 was a tale of two seasons; in the first 41 games he scored six goals and 21 points but heated up to the tune of six goals and 31 points in the following 40 contests. Now 34 games into the 2024-25 season it seems as though “Huby” has built upon this pace as he currently leads the Flames with 13 goals and 25 points. His hot start is more than worthy of a closer look. A December to Remember Much of Huberdeau’s success has come due to an impressive recent stretch of play. From Nov. 30 until the time of writing (10 games), he has rippled the twine six times and added seven helpers for 13 points. After two-and-a-half seasons of trying, he has finally found chemistry with fellow 2022 acquisition Nazem Kadri , who has six goals and nine points in the same span. Huberdeau’s six-game point streak from Nov. 30 until Dec. 12 is tied for the best mark of his Flames tenure. Over the past summer, the French-Canadian forward stated that he had been working intensely on his shot, which has seemingly paid off in full. As a career playmaker, Huberdeau characteristically elects to distribute the puck rather than put it on net. He now has more confidence shooting and during this same hot streak has accumulated 23 shots on goal. His higher volume has contributed to more success; he is shooting at a career-best 21.7% clip. With his tally on Dec. 21 against the Chicago Blackhawks, Huberdeau registered his 13th goal of the season, already surpassing the 12 he had in all of 2023-24. The team has been iffy during the past 10 games, but still captured 11 out of a possible 20 points with a 4-3-3 record. Over this period, the team has scored 29 goals for a rate of 2.9 per contest, meaning Huberdeau has factored into approximately 45% of his team’s offence during his streak. For comparison, the only Flames to register more than five points during this time are Kadri, Connor Zary , and Matt Coronato. Any time Huberdeau is on the ice this season, the Flames control the puck; he has registered a 56% Corsi For rating, which means the Flames have more shot attempts than their opponents. There are even defensive improvements as the winger is on pace for a career-high 68 blocked shots. Is Huberdeau Officially Back? Now, is this type of Huberdeau one that Flames fans should get used to? Not yet. This is a very impressive stretch of hockey even beyond the past 10 games. In total over his past 74 appearances, Huberdeau has 19 goals and 56 points. He is currently on pace to finish the 2024-25 campaign with 31 goals and 60 points, which would both shatter his previous highest Flames totals. Huberdeau hasn’t reached the 30-goal plateau since the 2021-22 season, his last with the Panthers. It is something the pass-first forward has also only done twice in his career. However, the second half of this season should once and for all determine what Huberdeau can bring to the table moving forward. Fans should prepare for regression. It is important to note a few things in helping determine the sustainability of Huberdeau’s recent play. First of all, his aforementioned 21.7% shooting success rate is likely not something he can maintain for the next 48 games. He is also playing more than ever before as a Flame, with an 18:30 average time on ice. Should the team’s performance start to decline, head coach Ryan Huska will probably play the younger forwards more often, which would eat into Huberdeau’s ice time. In addition, his line mate Kadri’s name has come up in trade talks and his movement could disrupt Huberdeau’s performance. If Huberdeau can navigate through all of these challenges and the others every season brings and keep on producing, his identity as a Flame will become more concrete. All in all, Huberdeau has been showing glimpses of the player the Flames thought they were getting back in 2022. If he can sustain his recent play, he will offer more hope to the many fans that have always believed in him as an on-ice contributor. While 60 points a season may not be worth $10.5 million, it is certainly an improvement on the production thus far and a step in the right direction for both team and player. At the end of the day, the Flames are relatively competitive and Huberdeau is currently leading the team in scoring. Things are good in Cowtown for the moment. The purpose of this second reading is to introduce any changes that were made to adopt policy committee recommendations. Additionally, further amendments can be proposed by the house before the bill is up for vote. A bill analysis is prepared which explains the bill, the current law, background of the bill, and lists organizations supporting or opposing the bill. There's then a third and final reading where the author explains the bill and it's discussed within the house. This is when it's finally presented for passage. A majority vote is required to pass - 21 votes in Senate or 41 in the Assembly - unless the bill requires funding and has been passed by the appropriations committee, in which case the threshold is higher, requiring 27 votes in the Senate or 54 votes in the Assembly. STEP 4 At this point, once a bill passes in its house of origin, it then is sent to the other house to repeat Steps 1-3 there. So, if a bill originated and passed in the Senate, it would then go to the Assembly to start the process over. The other house can make amendments to the bill as it goes through the legislative process there, in which case it would be sent back to its house of origin for the house to reach agreement on the changes. Ultimately, both the Senate and the Assembly have to pass the bill. STEP 5 The last step is to send the approved bill to the Governor’s desk for the final verdict on whether the bill will be signed, vetoed, or passed into law without a signature. Bills will pass automatically in 12 days if not actively vetoed, known as approval without signing. Approval without signing usually indicates the governor doesn't want to be associated with the bill, for whatever political reason. It could prevent alienating constituents or interest groups who disagree with the bill. Current Governor Gavin Newsom hasn't taken this action during his time in office, but former Governor Jerry Brown allowed five bills to become law without his signature during his time in office, and before that, former Governor Gray Davis also used this option for five bills. One example of approval without signing is Senate Bill 1272, which was a bill that sought to ask voters if the United States Constitution should be amended to overturn a previous court ruling related to campaign finance laws. Jerry Brown was governor at the time, and he agreed with the precedent of the bill – he too thought the court decision should be overturned – but he stated the bill would have no legal effect. Even if the bill was passed, it wouldn’t have legal authority to amend the United States Constitution. As such, he allowed the bill to pass, but he did so without his signature, saying, “It is my intent to signal that I am not inclined to repeat this practice of seeking advisory opinions from the voters.” Based on how infrequently this has been used over the past few decades, it seems it isn’t considered a popular option by governors. If the governor vetoes the bill, a two-thirds vote in each house is needed to override the veto. A governor’s veto hasn’t been overridden in California since 1980, so this is also an unlikely option statistically. Alternatively, when bills are passed, most will go into effect as law the following January 1. At this point, the bill is final record – it's signed, dated, and sent to the Secretary of State, where it's assigned a bill or chapter number and given the official seal of the Great State of California. High schools move on from college for allAmber Heard has claimed social media spreads lies more quickly than it does the truth, in the wake of Blake Lively’s complaint against her It Ends With Us co-star and director Justin Baldoni. US actress Lively accused Baldoni of sexual harassment, hostile work environment and embarking on a “multi-tiered plan” to damage her reputation with claims of a targeted social media campaign. The legal complaint states that Baldoni, 40, hired crisis communications specialist Melissa Nathan, the same publicist who actor Johnny Depp is said to have hired during his high-profile defamation trial against Heard in 2022. In a statement given to NBC News, Aquaman star Heard said: “Social media is the absolute personification of the classic saying, a lie travels halfway around the world before truth can get its boots on. “I saw this first-hand and up close. “It’s as horrifying as it is destructive.” Depp successfully sued ex-wife Heard over a 2018 article she wrote for The Washington Post about her experiences as a survivor of domestic abuse, which his lawyers said falsely accused him of being an abuser. At the time, Heard said the jury’s verdict “sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated”. Bryan Freedman, a lawyer representing Baldoni and the other named defendants, said Lively’s claims were “completely false, outrageous and intentionally salacious”, adding that the studio “made the decision to proactively hire a crisis manager prior to the marketing campaign of the film”. It Ends With Us, based on Colleen Hoover’s novel of the same name, is about a woman’s pursuit of a loving and healthy relationship, with Lively playing lead character Lily Bloom and Baldoni as her love interest Ryle Kincaid amid a backdrop of domestic violence. After the legal action was filed, Hoover appeared to voice support for 37-year-old Lively, writing on her Instagram stories: “@blakelively you have been nothing but honest, kind, supportive and patient since the day we met. “Thank you for being exactly the human that you are. “Never change. Never wilt.” Hoover posted a link to a New York Times article titled We Can Bury Anyone: Inside A Hollywood Smear Machine. Lively’s former cast members from the 2005 film The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants, America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn, and Alexis Bledel, also released a joint social media statement to defend their long-time friend. “As Blake’s friends and sisters for over 20 years, we stand with her in solidarity as she fights back against the reported campaign waged to destroy her reputation,” the statement said. “Throughout the filming of It Ends With Us, we saw her summon the courage to ask for a safe workplace for herself and colleagues on set, and we are appalled to read the evidence of a premeditated and vindictive effort that ensued to discredit her voice.” They added: “We are struck by the reality that even if a woman is as strong, celebrated, and resourced as our friend Blake, she can face forceful retaliation for daring to ask for a safe working environment,” the statement continues. “We are inspired by our sister’s courage to stand up for herself and others.”

MADRID (AP) — Getafe scored twice in three minutes midway through the second half to beat struggling Valladolid 2-0 and record only its second win in La Liga on Friday. The victory ended Getafe’s five-game winless run and lifted it into 15th place in the 20-team standings. Valladolid remained second to last. In the buildup to the match, Getafe sporting director Rubén Reyes described the game as a final but his team was lucky not to go behind as Valladolid created more of the early chances. However, the home side took control in the 69th minute when substitute Álvaro Rodríguez got the opener. Three minutes later, man of the match Allan Nyom made it 2-0. “There’s been a lot of games where we’ve run and fought but lost or drawn,” Nyom, the veteran Cameroon full back, said. “A game that reflects the effort we’ve put in in training is very welcome.” Adding to Valladolid’s woes, coach Paulo Pezzolano was sent off before halftime. The Uruguayan has the league’s worst disciplinary record, with seven yellow cards before Friday’s red. AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

Trump says he can't guarantee tariffs won't raise US prices and won't rule out revenge prosecutionsNEW YORK — President-elect Donald Trump will attend the reopening celebration for Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris this weekend, his first foreign trip since the election. The cathedral is set to reopen Saturday after more than five years of reconstruction following a devastating fire in 2019 that engulfed and nearly destroyed the soaring Paris landmark . The ceremonies being held Saturday and Sunday will be high-security affairs , with about 50 heads of state and government expected to attend. Trump announced that he will be among them in a post on his Truth Social site Monday evening. “It is an honor to announce that I will be traveling to Paris, France, on Saturday to attend the re-opening of the Magnificent and Historic Notre Dame Cathedral, which has been fully restored after a devastating fire five years ago,” he wrote. “President Emmanuel Macron has done a wonderful job ensuring that Notre Dame has been restored to its full level of glory, and even more so. It will be a very special day for all!” The trip will be Trump's first abroad since he won November's presidential election. He traveled to Scotland and Ireland in May 2023, as a candidate, to visit his local golf courses. Trump was president in 2019 when a massive fire engulfed Notre Dame, collapsing its spire and threatening to destroy one of the world’s greatest architectural treasures, known for its mesmerizing stained glass. Trump watched the inferno in horror, along with the rest of the world. “So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris,” he wrote on what was then named Twitter , offering his advice to the city. "Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!” he wrote. French officials appeared to respond shortly after , nothing that “All means” were being used to extinguish the flames, "except for water-bombing aircrafts which, if used, could lead to the collapse of the entire structure of the cathedral.” Trump also spoke with Macron and Pope Francis at the time to offer his condolences and said he had offered them “the help of our great experts on renovation and construction.” Trump and Macron have had a complicated relationship. During Trump's first term in office, Macron proved to be among the world leaders most adept at managing the American president's whims as he tried to develop a personal connection built in no small part on flattery. Macron was the guest of honor at Trump's first state dinner and Trump traveled to France several times. But the relationship soured as Trump’s term progressed and Macron criticized him for questioning the need for NATO and raising doubts about America’s commitment to the mutual-defense pact. As he ran for a second term this year, Trump often mocked Macron on the campaign trail, imitating his accent and threatening to impose steep tariffs on wine and champagne bottles shipped to the U.S. if France tried to tax American companies. After Trump won another term last month, Macron rushed to win favor with the president-elect. He was among the first global leaders to congratulate Trump — even before The Associated Press called the race in his favor — and beat UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to the punch in delivering a congratulatory phone call. "Congratulations, President @realDonaldTrump ,” Macron posted on X early on Nov 6. “Ready to work together as we did for four years. With your convictions and mine. With respect and ambition. For more peace and prosperity.” Macron and other European leaders are trying to persuade Trump not to abandon America’s support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s nearly three-year invasion. European leaders hope to convince Trump that a victory by Russia would be viewed as a defeat for the U.S. — and for the incoming president, by extension — hoping to sell him on the need to pursue an end to the war more favorable to Kyiv than he might otherwise seek. Trump over the weekend announced that he intends to nominate real estate developer Charles Kushner , the father of his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, to serve as ambassador to France. The elder Kushner was pardoned by Trump in December 2020 after pleading guilty years earlier to tax evasion and making illegal campaign donations. The reopening of Notre Dame will be an elaborate, multi-day celebration , beginning Saturday. Paris Archbishop Laurent Ulrich will preside at a reopening service that afternoon, banging on Notre Dame’s shuttered doors with his staff to reopen them, according to the cathedral's website . The archbishop will also symbolically reawaken Notre Dame’s thunderous grand organ. The fire that melted the cathedral’s lead roofing coated the huge instrument in toxic dust. Its 8,000 pipes have been painstakingly disassembled, cleaned and retuned . Macron will attend and address the VIP guests. After the service, opera singers Pretty Yende, from South Africa, and Julie Fuchs, from France; Chinese pianist Lang Lang; Paris-born cellist Yo-Yo Ma; Benin-born singer Angelique Kidjo ; Lebanese singer Hiba Tawaji and others will perform at a concert Saturday evening, according to the show’s broadcaster, France Télévisions. On Sunday morning, the Paris archbishop will lead an inaugural Mass and consecration of the new altar. Nearly 170 bishops from France and other countries will join the celebration, along with priests from all 106 parishes in the Paris diocese. The Mass will be followed by a “fraternal buffet” for the needy. Ile de la Cité, where the cathedral sits in the middle of the River Seine, will be blocked off to tourists for the events. A public viewing area with room for 40,000 spectators will be set up along the Seine’s southern bank. ___ Associated Press writer Zeke Miller contributed to this report from Washington.

The New York Jets have now officially gone 14 years without making the playoffs, which is an active record for the NFL . The embarrassment doesn't stop there, though: it is an active record for virtually all major American professional sports leagues, including the NBA , NHL , MLB , and the WNBA. With a loss today at Miami, the Jets now have been eliminated from the playoffs for the 14th consecutive season, extending the longest active drought across the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB and the WNBA. pic.twitter.com/Sxj0vpaXC0 More News: Former First-Round Pick Jets LB Likely Out For Rest Of Season The Jets' playoff hopes were officially extinguished in a gut-wrenching 32-26 overtime loss to the Miami Dolphins, a game they had been on the brink of winning. With just seconds left in regulation, New York had driven deep into Dolphins territory, setting up what appeared to be a game-winning field goal. However, after exchanging field goals to end regulation, the game took a devastating turn in overtime. Miami received the ball first, and Tua Tagovailoa led the Dolphins downfield, capping the drive with a touchdown pass to Jonnu Smith, who had been silent throughout regulation but caught three crucial passes on the decisive possession. The Jets (3-10) were eliminated from playoff contention, while the Dolphins (6-7) kept their postseason hopes alive. The loss marked the Jets' fourth consecutive defeat and their ninth in the last 10 games, extending their streak of futility in Miami to nine straight losses. Despite holding an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter, the Jets once again failed to finish strong, sealing their fate and ending any hopes of a late-season rally. This loss makes the Jets the team to go longest without making the playoffs in active professional leagues, which has to sting even more than the other major losses of the season. To be fair, the season has been an extraordinarily chaotic one for the Jets and it is difficult to imagine any team performing well under the circumstances. In late November, the team fired general manager Joe Douglas, just six weeks after dismissing head coach Robert Saleh. More News: Jets Owner Could Give Up Team To Join Donald Trump Administration To fill the void, defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich was promoted to interim head coach, where he wasted no time reshuffling the coaching staff. He demoted offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and promoted Todd Downing to offensive play-caller, hoping to spark some life into a struggling offense. In an effort to ignite the offense, the Jets made a major move by acquiring Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders, which has not paid off quite as well as they might have hoped. However, owner Woody Johnson had considered even bolder changes earlier in the season, as the team struggled to find its rhythm. After a dismal 10-9 loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 4, Johnson reportedly floated the idea of benching Aaron Rodgers in favor of Tyrod Taylor, citing concerns that Rodgers' performance was hindering the team's progress. While the organization has denied these rumors, the team's current 14-year losing streak will likely cause some shakeups for next season and it's anyone guess whether Rodgers will stick around in 2025. For more on the NFL , head to Newsweek Sports .President Joe Biden on Monday announced that he is commuting the sentences of 37 of the 40 people on federal death row , converting their punishments to life imprisonment. It means just three federal inmates continue to face execution: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Robert Bowers and Dylann Roof. Here's what to know about the three inmates who remain on death row: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was sentenced to death for his role in the bombing that killed three people and injured hundreds near the finish line of the Boston Marathon in 2013. Tsarnaev was convicted in 2015 of all 30 charges against him, including conspiracy and use of a weapon of mass destruction and the killing of Massachusetts Institute of Technology Police Officer Sean Collier during his and his brother's getaway attempt. Dzhokhar's older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, died in a gun battle with police a few days after the April 15, 2013, bombing. Dzhokhar's lawyers acknowledged at the very beginning of his trial that he and Tamerlan set off the two bombs that killed Lingzi Lu, a 23-year-old Boston University graduate student from China; Krystle Campbell, a 29-year-old restaurant manager from Medford, Massachusetts; and 8-year-old Martin Richard, of Boston. They argued, however, that he shouldn't have been put to death, saying his brother radicalized him and was the mastermind of the attack. In 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the death sentence imposed on Dzhokhar after the 1st Circuit threw out the sentence in 2020. The circuit court found then that the trial judge did not sufficiently question jurors about their exposure to extensive news coverage of the bombing. The Supreme Court justices voted 6-3 in 2022 when they ruled that the 1st Circuit’s decision was wrong. Robert Bowers was sentenced to death for shooting and killing 11 worshippers at a synagogue in the heart of Pittsburgh’s Jewish community in 2018. Bowers spewed hatred of Jews and espoused white supremacist beliefs online before methodically planning and carrying out the massacre at the Tree of Life synagogue, where members of three congregations had gathered for Sabbath worship and study. Bowers, a truck driver from suburban Baldwin, also wounded two worshippers and five responding police officers. The victims killed were Joyce Fienberg, 75; Richard Gottfried, 65; Rose Mallinger, 97; Dr. Jerry Rabinowitz, 66; brothers David Rosenthal, 54, and Cecil Rosenthal, 59; Bernice Simon, 84, and her husband, Sylvan Simon, 86; Dan Stein, 71; Melvin Wax, 87; Irving Younger, 69. Bowers was convicted of all 63 criminal counts he faced, including hate crimes resulting in death and obstruction of the free exercise of religion resulting in death. It remains the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S. history. Dylann Roof was sentenced to death for the 2015 racist slayings of nine members of a Black South Carolina congregation, becoming the first person in the U.S. sentenced to death for a federal hate crime. Roof opened fire during the closing prayer of a Bible study at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, raining down dozens of bullets on those assembled. He was 21 at the time. The victims killed in the shooting were Clementa Pinckney, Cynthia Graham Hurd, Susie Jackson, Ethel Lance, DePayne Middleton-Doctor, Tywanza Sanders, Daniel Simmons, Sharonda Singleton and Myra Thompson. She gives much time to quilting (by long-arm quilting machine), which are all donated by the women of the Dorcas Group of Austin Congregational Church. Some of the quilts are pieced by Mari Jo, as well. She estimates that 500 quilts have been donated to veterans through the Quilts of Valor program. In past years, this group effort also gave quilts to the Linus Project, to be given to children interacting in stressful situations with police officers or social workers. And when Austin had an active Habitat for Humanity affiliate, quilts were made and given to new homeowners. Church members receive quilts for baptisms, graduations and special thank you gifts. This work is all financed by cash donations, and donations of time and materials. Of course, Mari Jo’s time is a huge part of the endeavor. After retiring from a 40-year career in several positions in the finance area at Hormel Foods, Mari Jo found that she had time on her hands and became a serious quilter. And she just loves it! Her sense of design and color are showcased in the quilts she pieces. An example of her special thoughtfulness is a quilt she made from the shirts of a deceased church member as a gift to comfort his wife. Mari Jo explains that she has quilts made by her paternal grandmother whom she never knew, and she treasures these quilts as a way to connect with this ancestor. She feels that the quilts that bear her name are her legacy; one way she will be remembered. This big quilting project is not enough to fill Mari Jo’s giving nature. She also makes handmade soap, mittens out of recycled sweaters, quilted bags and wall hangings and sells them at craft fairs to help with the expenses of her three intellectually disabled granddaughters. Her handmade goods are also on sale at Sweet Reads Bookstore, where she volunteers in exchange for selling her things there. Her other Congregational Church activities include serving as current moderator (lay leader), and as chair of the Properties Committee, as well as helping to chair the big biannual church rummage sales which are a favorite activity for her. She loves that these sales recycle so many things and bring together so many people within and outside the church family. Unsold items are given to many people in need. Mari Jo attributes much of her equanimity to her one-hundred-and -one year old mother, Vera Sims. “My parents led by example teaching us integrity, honesty and strength, confidence, and love, among other things. As a young person, I couldn’t understand my peers that didn’t get along with their mothers, as my mother was my best friend (most of the time).” They continue as best friends to this day. Thank you, Mari Jo Stanek, for your many contributions to our community!
