The New York Giants , at 2-8, don’t have much to hang their hat on. The defense’s efforts have largely been wasted by an inept offense. Quarterback Tommy DeVito will be the third passer to see the field this season. Things have gone from bad to worse, and the bye week’s changes aren’t guaranteed to make Sunday go any better. New York will return from the break to host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. It will do so as touchdown underdogs, hoping to leave a mark on the NFC playoff picture from the outside. At the very least, the Giants are almost entirely healthy heading into Week 12. © Lucas Boland-USA TODAY Sports The team released the following injury report on Thursday. LIMITED FULL Notably, Thibodeaux was a full participant, an upgrade from his limited status on Wednesday. He was eligible to return from injured reserve and the team opened his practice window as it emerged from the bye. Getting a starter back in a full capacity should be meaningful for a Giants squad that needs all the help it can get. No team has averaged more sacks per game, but the pass rush could take another step forward with Thibodeaux’s return, which now seems inevitable. Related: WATCH: Daniel Jones Says Goodbye Further, Slayton should get the green light for Sunday, too. A concussion forced him to stay home while the team traveled to Munich in Week 10. The rest, along with the bye week, allowed Slayton to return to practice as a full participant. Receiver Jalin Hyatt was encouraging in his absence, potentially pushing for more playing time as the season rolls along. There isn’t yet reason to be concerned about Lawrence nor Nubin, the two defensive starters listed as limited on Thursday. Lawrence has been getting veteran courtesies for much of the season, while Nubin has played virtually every snap as a rookie. Phillips is a name to watch as he was a late addition to the injury report, having not been listed on Wednesday. Still, as a full participant, he’s expected to go against a strong Buccaneers offense. With nobody held entirely out of practice, New York looks to be at full strength on Sunday. That bodes well for a team in desperate need of a win. What happens when 'The Simpsons' join 'Monday Night Football'? Find out during Bengals-CowboysNEW YORK (AP) — Top-ranked chess player is headed back to the World Blitz Championship on Monday after its governing body agreed to loosen a dress code that got him fined and denied a late-round game in another tournament for . Lamenting the contretemps, International Chess Federation President Arkady Dvorkovich said in a statement Sunday that he’d let World Blitz Championship tournament officials consider allowing “appropriate jeans” with a jacket, and other “elegant minor deviations” from the dress code. He said Carlsen’s stand — which culminated in his quitting the tournament Friday — highlighted a need for more discussion “to ensure that our rules and their application reflect the evolving nature of chess as a global and accessible sport.” Carlsen, meanwhile, said in a video posted Sunday on social media that he would play — and wear jeans — in the World Blitz Championship when it begins Monday. “I think the situation was badly mishandled on their side,” the 34-year-old Norwegian grandmaster said. But he added that he loves playing blitz — a fast-paced form of chess — and wanted fans to be able to watch, and that he was encouraged by his discussions with the federation after Friday’s showdown. “I think we sort of all want the same thing,” he suggested in the video on his Take Take Take chess app’s YouTube channel. “We want the players to be comfortable, sure, but also relatively presentable.” The events began when Carlsen wore jeans and a sportcoat Friday to the Rapid World Championship, which is separate from but held in conjunction with the blitz event. The chess federation said Friday that longstanding rules prohibit jeans at those tournaments, and players are lodged nearby to make sartorial switch-ups easy if needed. An official fined Carlsen $200 and asked him to change pants, but he refused and wasn’t paired for a ninth-round game, the federation said at the time. The organization noted that another grandmaster, Ian Nepomniachtchi, was fined earlier in the day for wearing sports shoes, changed and continued to play. Carlsen has said that he offered to wear something else the next day, but officials were unyielding. He said “it became a bit of a matter of principle,” so he quit the rapid and blitz championships. In the video posted Sunday, he questioned whether he had indeed broken a rule and said changing clothes would have needlessly interrupted his concentration between games. He called the punishment “unbelievably harsh.” “Of course, I could have changed. Obviously, I didn’t want to,” he said, and “I stand by that.” Jennifer Peltz, The Associated Press

The Los Angeles Lakers traded guard D'Angelo Russell, forward Maxwell Lewis and three second-round draft picks to the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday in exchange for forward Dorian Finney-Smith and guard Shake Milton. The Lakers will send their second-round picks in 2027, 2030 and 2031 to Brooklyn in the deal, ESPN reported. It marks the second time that Russell, 28, has been dealt from the Lakers to the Nets. Los Angeles selected him No. 2 overall in the 2015 NBA Draft, and he spent two seasons there before being traded on June 22, 2017, with Timofey Mozgov to the Nets for Brook Lopez and draft pick Kyle Kuzma. Russell made stops with the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves before the Lakers acquired him again on Feb. 9, 2023, as part of a three-team deal. Russell's role in head coach J.J. Redick's rotation had diminished. In October, Russell averaged 30.6 minutes per game, dropping to 25.5 in November and 25.2 in December. In 29 games (10 starts) this season, he's averaging 26.3 minutes, 12.4 points, 2.8 rebounds and 4.7 assists. All are below his career averages of 30 minutes, 17.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 5.7 assists. Lewis, 22, has seen limited action for the Lakers this season, with the small forward scoring 15 points in seven games. Finney-Smith, 31, is in his ninth NBA season. He has started all 20 games he's appeared in, averaging 10.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists over 29 minutes per game. Milton, 28, is averaging 7.4 points per game over 27 appearances (one start). He is also contributing 1.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists. --Field Level Media

Simple Hacks to Make the Holidays Merrier (and Cheaper)

The former Coronation Street star had two stints on the show, finishing seventh in 2012 before taking part in a special South Africa all-stars spin-off 11 years later. Halsall, who plays Tyrone Dobbs, is the latest in a series of Corrie actors and actresses to appear on the ITV show, and Helen is backing her former co-star to thrive. “Alan is someone I've known since I was really little, and will be great in the jungle,” she said in an interview associated with WhichBingo . “When you're in Coronation Street; there’s such a social aspect of being part of the show and you meet people from all walks of life. Helen when she starred in I'm a Celebrity... South Africa (Image: ITV) “You hang around for such a long time with people of different ages and different backgrounds, so it really puts you in good stead for appearing on a show like I’m A Celeb. “I definitely think it’s done that for me in my life. So, Alan will be great socially, and he's got a lot about him as a person too. “He knows it's hard. He will definitely be able to do the trials and is a very grounded person as well. He'll be a team player and will smash it.” Flanagan will also be keeping a close eye on Tulisa Contostavlos, revealing her affection for the N-Dubz singer. Alan Halsall in I'm a Celeb (Image: ITV) She said: “I love Tulisa. I have seen lots of her social media stuff; I know her, and she's a really lovely girl. “I think she will do fab in it and is genuinely a nice person as well.” Appearing on I’m A Celeb can be a punishing ordeal, and the 34-year-old admits to being “absolutely horrendous” on the first show. However, we saw a completely different version of the former Corrie star in South Africa, showing her resilience to take on the famous Bushtucker Trials in a much calmer and controlled manner compared to 11 years previously. “I really love the jungle now,” she continued. “I remember when I first did it at 22, and I was absolutely horrendous. I'd get memes sent through by all my family and friends of some embarrassing pictures of me. “But I then went back to do the South Africa show almost two years ago, and I smashed the trials. I felt like I had made my peace with it.” Tulisa in I'm a Celebrity (Image: ITV) Helen’s most recent reality TV experience came on Channel 4’s dating show Celebs Go Dating where she caused a stir by revealing she already had a boyfriend whilst appearing on the programme. He was confirmed to be Robbie Talbot from Liverpool – who she brought onto the show - and the reality TV star has warmly reflected on her experiences. She said: “I loved it and have some great memories of the show, as I was myself. When you do reality shows, you have to be yourself. “I think it can be a little bit difficult as well, because it's so different doing reality TV shows compared to acting. Helen when she appeared on Celebs Go Dating (Image: Channel 4/E4) “You're hiding behind a character as an actress. Whereas, when you do reality TV, you are being yourself. So sometimes, it can be challenging because you're putting yourself out there for the public to comment on you as a person. “But I genuinely loved it and it was nice to bring my boyfriend on the show. One of the reasons why I wanted to do that, was to show that it's a healthy relationship. “I've previously sat watching Celebs Go Dating the year before as a single mum with three children and I thought to myself, 'Am I going to have a healthy relationship?'. I didn't think I'd have a boyfriend for a really long time. “For me, it was nice to show all the single mums that you can have a really nice relationship; you’ve got to be true to yourself if you do a reality show.” Helen admits she is now yearning for a return to acting and highlighted the importance of sharing her personal journey on social media to portray an accurate representation of herself to the world. Helen is backing her Corrie co-star (Image: Ian West/PA Wire) “I'd love to do more acting, as I really do miss it. But I have to work things around my children as well,” she explained. “I love working on social media too and have been working on it properly for about seven years now. It's something that I do really enjoy, and it’s empowering to have your own voice. “You have your own kind of sense of control when you have your social media, but I sometimes have a love-hate relationship with it. “Sometimes I feel it's not good for us to constantly be on our phones all the time and I worry for the younger generation in the sense that social media makes us constantly compare ourselves to others. “It can be bad for your mental health . I hope that this will improve for both children and adults in the future.”

Jimmy Carter, 39th president and Nobel Peace Prize winner, dies at 100In 1996, the premium cable channel Home Box Office launched a major advertising campaign promoting the idea that you were getting something special when you signed up for the service: The slogan: “It’s not TV, it’s HBO.” Call that fake news — after all, it WAS TV — but it was a great ad campaign and it’s a tagline that resonates to this day. Cut to 2024, and we’re living in an era where we can say, it’s not TV, it’s Netflix and Apple TV+ and Peacock and Prime Video and Disney+ and Max and AMC+ and YouTube and Tubi and Starz and FX on Hulu and Paramount+ with Showtime — and of course we still have HBO and CBS and NBC and ABC and Fox et al. We have never had so many choices, to the point where it can be overwhelming and create Menu Anxiety. What do I watch! Where do I watch it! How do I watch it! This is one of the reasons why series such as “Friends” and “The Office” and “Seinfeld” continue to perform so well in the perpetual rerun afterlife; while some of the storylines might be dated or even problematic, the humor is still consistent — and when we’re unable to choose something new to watch because it feels like there too many options, we can always default to 22 minutes of comfort viewing. It’s impossible to come close to watching every single new series in any given year, but I try to gobble up as many as I can. Here’s my Top 10 for 2024. 10. ‘How to Die Alone’ (Hulu) Creator, executive producer and headliner Natasha Rothwell leaves an indelible impression with her funny, empathic and grounded work as Mel, a JFK airport employee who has an accidental brush with death and takes that as a sign it’s time to live her life to the fullest. That might sound like the setup of a sugary romcom from the early 2000s, but this is darkly hilarious, sharply written and at times deeply moving character study, with Rothwell meshing seamlessly with the ensemble cast. 9. ‘Masters of the Air’ (Apple TV+) Two series in a row set against the backdrop of flights taking off and landing — and they couldn’t possibly be more different. This World War II drama is a companion to “Band of Brothers” (land) and “The Pacific” (sea), as we take to the skies for an old-fashioned, at times unabashedly corny yet powerful and visually stunning epic about the 100 th Bomb Group. Directed by some of the best filmmakers in TV and in movies today, and featuring a star-studded cast including Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan and Callum Turner, this is a rousing and heroic story, with the some of the most impressive VFX ever seen in a series. 8. ‘Black Doves’ (Netflix) Keira Knightley does some of the best work of her career as a London mother and wife married to the U.K. Defence Secretary, who hasn’t the foggiest inkling his spouse is also a high-level operative for a secret espionage agency known as the Black Doves. Hardly a week goes by without the release of another slick and well-filmed spy series (there’s another one on this list), but “Black Doves” stands out from the crowd, thanks to the great chemistry between Knightley and Ben Whishaw as her best friend who happens to be an assassin, the consistently clever dialogue, and a plot worthy of top-tier Guy Ritchie. 7. ‘A Man on the Inside’ (Netflix) Few actors in the history of television have appeared more comfortable on TV than Ted Danson, who for five decades has been headlining series ranging from great to pretty darn good. In this warmly funny gem from the prolific and gifted Michael Schur (a major contributor to some of the best sitcoms of the century), Danson does Emmy-level work as a widower who infiltrates a retirement community to investigate a possible burglary. It’s an admittedly gimmicky premise that consistently delights in unexpected ways. You want to wrap your arms around every character in this show. 6. ‘The Day of the Jackal” (Peacock) It’s cliché by now to say a TV series looks like a movie but I’ll embrace that cliché when it comes to this latest adaptation of the Frederick Forsyth novel. Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne is chillingly good as the legendary assassin known as the Jackal, with Lashana Lynch doing equally impressive work as the weapons-expert British intelligence officer who becomes obsessed with taking him down. 5. ‘Bad Monkey’ (Apple TV+) I’m not sure I had more fun watching any series this year than I did with “Bad Monkey,” with Vince Vaughn in prime Vince Vaughn form as a suspended cop turned restaurant inspector who gets mixed up in all sorts of dangerous hijinks involving a severed body part, an Obeah-practicing woman known as the Dragon Queen (a terrific Jodie Turner-Smith), an ex-girlfriend (Michelle Monaghan) with criminal tendencies, and a capuchin monkey named Driggs who really isn’t such a bad monkey after all. Set in the Florida Keys and the Bahamas, this is escapist TV at its finest. 4. ‘Shogun’ (Hulu, Disney+) More than four decades after James Clavell’s 1975 blockbuster novel was adapted in 1980 and became one of the most popular and acclaimed television series of its time, Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks created a gorgeous, visceral, sweeping, next-level masterwork (first seen on FX and Hulu) featuring a mostly Japanese cast, with the dialogue primarily in the Japanese language. This is one of the great historical drama series of our times — a brilliant, stunningly staged epic that immerses us in the culture and politics of 1600 Japan. Winner of 18 Emmys, including outstanding drama series. 3. ‘The Perfect Couple’ (Netflix) Nicole Kidman starred in my No. 4 movie of 2024 with “Babygirl,” and with “The Perfect Couple,” she continues her string of playing women who seem to have it all but are stressed to the limit and are often embroiled in dark or even tragic circumstances. (See also “Big Little Lies,” “The Undoing” and “Expats.”) Kidman is in prime icy form as the matriarch of a wealthy family on Nantucket that is hosting a lavish wedding celebration derailed by an untimely death. One of the many things I loved about this perfectly cast, great-looking, addictively bingeable gem is that it goes through all the lurid paces in a relatively zippy six episodes instead of dragging things out, as is the case with so many limited series dramas. This is a near-perfect slice of glossy entertainment about some wildly imperfect people, most of whom deserve each other. 2. ‘Landman’ (Paramount+) The prolific Tyler Sheridan (“Yellowstone,” “Mayor of Kingstown,” “Tulsa King”) hits another home run, teaming with journalist-screenwriter Christian Wallace to create a hits-the-ground-running sensation that grabs you from the opening scene and keeps you in its thrall through every turn, even when things get soapy and melodramatic (as they often did on “Yellowstone”). Billy Bob Thornton owns the role of Tommy Norris, a crisis manager for a fictional oil company, while Ali Larter does career-best work as Tommy’s ex-wife Angela, with Jon Hamm and Demi Moore among the top names in the supporting cast. “Landman” is one of those shows where the only time you steal a glance at the time is because you hope there’s another 20 minutes left in this episode, but darn it, 55 minutes have just flown by. 1. ‘The Penguin’ (HBO) As much as I admired Lauren LeFranc’s fantastically grimy, gritty and punishingly effective TV spinoff sequel to the feature film “The Batman” when I reviewed it a few months back, I’m not sure I fully appreciated the full brilliance of this work until I rewatched much of the series and was blown away by its dark, rich, powerful grip. Much of has been made of Michael Marino’s award-worthy makeup work that transformed Colin Farrell into the startling presence that is Oz Cobb, but it’s Farrell’s performance that turned Cobb into one of the most memorably psychotic underworld figure characterss of the 21st century. Cristin Milioti is equally great as Sofia Gigante, the presumed serial killer who takes revenge on her enemies in a shocking set-piece and becomes Cobb’s archrival, as each schemes to take control of Gotham’s rotting underbelly. “The Penguin” springs from the DC Comic Universe, but it felt more like a descendant of “The Sopranos” and DePalma’s “Scarface.” A worthy descendant. It’s not TV, it’s HBO.Gary Neville has explained why Arsenal should be feeling the pressure as Manchester City ’s crisis continues. The Premier League champions are in a state of disarray, having lost five consecutive matches. Pep Guardiola’s side were thrashed 4-0 by Tottenham on Saturday, with the City boss admitting his side are “fragile” defensively. This is an unprecedented run of poor form for Guardiola and leaves City way off the pace in the Premier League title race. Liverpool lead the way by eight points and could increase that to 11 should they beat the champions at Anfield next weekend. The Gunners, meanwhile, are now only a point behind City, albeit trail Liverpool by some distance too. Still, Mikel Arteta’s side ended their four-game run without a victory by beating Nottingham Forest 3-0 on Saturday. Neville has backed Arsenal to win the League this season and believes the pressure to capitalise on City’s crisis is on them. While Liverpool look favourites for the title, Neville argues that the fact Arne Slot’s side were considered relative outsiders before a ball was kicked this season gives them something of a free-hit. Arsenal, of course, have run City lose in the title race over the past two seasons having emerged as a genuine contender – largely in the place of Liverpool. Neville believes the north London side will be bitterly disappointed if they cannot be the side who capitalise on a potentially fallow year for City. “This feels different,” he said of City’s poor run. “This feels like if you’re Arsenal, if you’re Liverpool – who I think are the two genuine teams that can win the title other than Manchester City – you must not get carried away but feel ‘hang on a minute, there’s no excuses here now’. “I’m looking more at Arsenal with that statement, really. I think anyone at the start of the season who would have said Arne Slot would come in and do what he’s done, I would have thought ‘No, that’s not quite going to happen.’ “This was Arsenal’s season if it wasn’t going to be City’s. So I think the pressure is really on Arsenal now to step up and go for it. They’ve had a good start with the 3-0 [win over Forest].”

When I started losing weight over the summer, it was kind of pleasant. I swapped my "fat Dave" pants for my "fit Dave" pants and rotated in the dress shirts with the smaller collars. But then football season rolled around. I exercise all year so I can snack heroically while watching college games, but this year, the Twizzlers, Bugles and peanut butter M&Ms sat on the kitchen island, barely touched by me. Mentally, I wanted to eat, but physically I just couldn't choke down more than a bite or two. Dave Bundy poses for a portrait, Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024, in Lincoln. I think my wife figured it out first, then the doctors confirmed, that the cancer I wrote about in 2016 — bile duct cancer that sat dormant for years after radiation and chemotherapy — was back and spreading. I was first diagnosed with cancer 20 years ago, when my wife and I had a 6-year-old, a 3-year-old and twins about to be born. The stakes seemed high. I needed to live to help raise these kids. And through medicine and miracles, I survived. That cancer disappeared, though it may have figured into the complications that gave rise to my new cancer in 2016 and now. People are also reading... This time around, the kids are 26, 23 and the twins are 20. There's still plenty of parenting to do (and eventually, maybe, some grandparenting), but we're in a much better place than two decades ago. No one is in diapers, for example, and theoretically, they know how to clean up after themselves. It's common to talk about battling cancer. For me, the relationship has changed. I see my cancer as a voyage, and the end, when it comes, won't be a matter of losing; it'll be a matter of reaching a destination. It kind of takes the pressure off. I'm about a quarter of the way through my 24-week chemo cycle. I'm older, skinnier and in worse physical shape than eight years ago, so the journey is more uphill, but I am again inspired by the care providers, my neighbors in the chemo room, family, friends and readers who have become friends. Folks may worry about where our nation and our society is headed. But I can assure that on a more granular level — person to person, regardless of political bent — we are in a good place, metaphorically and literally. My spirits have been lifted by heartfelt prayers and warm wishes. I'll be getting another six-hour chemo treatment this week, right before Thanksgiving. I may not eat as much turkey and stuffing this year, but what I eat will be with my wife and my four kids, our first holiday together under one roof in three years. And I'll be nourished by the kindness of so many in our community. Naming names or not Speaking of gratitude, after the flurry of election-related letters to the editor is behind us, I wanted to say thanks and share my great respect for those letter writers. Regardless of their views, letter writers care enough to submit a piece and have the courage to sign their name to it — their real name. What I have little use — and no respect — for are profane and menacing letters, mailed by someone with a fake name, to the homes of our letter writers. At least three letter writers have received personal and toxic letters through the mail at their homes. Presumably, this person, who seems to use a pseudonym, got the addresses via readily available public records. If you've got a beef with a letter writer, be a letter writer yourself. Show the same courage and integrity as our writers. You stand a much better chance of making your point if you step out from behind the curtain of anonymity. A last thought on gratitude On occasion, we make spelling or usage errors in the paper, and readers relish in pointing them out. I hate errors, but if we make them, I like knowing about them. Often times I will tell the person who saw the error that my seventh-grade grammar teacher, Mrs. Max, would have some choice words for me. Mrs. Max was, indeed, a life-changing teacher. She did far more than show us how to diagram sentences and help us memorize linking verbs. She wasn't cool. She wasn't fun. But she cared and taught her students a precision and professionalism in communication that serves (or abandons) me every day. Last winter, I tracked her down. Gertrude Max was 93 years old and living in an assisted care facility in suburban Kansas City where I grew up. Though she was a stickler for good cursive, I typed her a letter and sent it via postal service. A few weeks later, my cell phone rang on a Saturday night. It was a 913 area code, from where I grew up. I answered. It was Mrs. Max., her voice every bit as authoritative as it was more than four decades ago. I just wanted to tell her how grateful I was to have her as a teacher. What she taught me I use every day. Over the summer, I found out Mrs. Max had died. When I talked to her on the phone months before, she was ageless in my mind, peering at me over reading glasses hanging perilously close to the tip of her nose. I am so grateful I acted on impulse and was able to thank her. And I'm so glad she called me. That, to me, was yet another lesson from her: Gratitude shared enriches us all. If you try, I bet you can be grateful for something each and every day. Today, I'm grateful you read this far. Thanks. Dave Bundy is editor of the Lincoln Journal Star. Mutual of America Capital Management LLC Trims Stake in Mercury Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRCY)One of the bigger drivers of Medicaid’s rising costs in Virginia is the ballooning expense of covering weight-loss drugs, a state Senate Finance Committee review found. That cost climbed to $267.8 million for the fiscal year that ended June 30, more than three times the bill from when Virginia Medicaid began covering the increasingly commonly prescribed medications two years earlier, senior legislative analyst Mike Tweedy told the committee at its annual retreat at the Hotel Madison in Harrisonburg. But when the state Department of Medical Assistance Services added coverage of the new weight-loss drugs in November 2022, decision-makers had no information about the fiscal impact, he said. About 30 states cover the medications. With the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s view that obesity has become a major public health issue and as regulators consider authorizing use of the drugs for other conditions, the new medications look set to put still more upward pressure on Medicaid costs, Tweedy said. The injectable drug Ozempic costs patients in the U.S. $969 a month, more than six times the Canadian price. The managed care plans that cover most of Virginia Medicaid’s patients began reporting significant price increases to Medicaid officials in late spring last year. The drugs are expensive, and Americans pay more for them than people in other countries do, according to a U.S. Senate Health Education and Pensions Committee study. Ozempic costs diabetic patients in the States $969 a month, more than six times the Canadian price, while Wegovy costs Americans using it to treat obesity $1,349 a month, or more than 14 times the price in Great Britain. Tweedy said the standards for when and how the department pays for the medications is one area where it needs to focus on cost effectiveness and controlling spending growth. Another is emergency room payments. Medicaid’s payments for ER care have increased 15% a year for the past two years, Tweedy said. The state last year lost a federal court case challenging a longstanding policy toward cutting Medicaid payments to emergency room physicians if a patient came to the ER with a nonemergency, paying instead as if the doctors performed more routine care. While the General Assembly approved a new program last year, Medicaid has not implemented the program, Tweedy said. Policymakers and insurers have long tried to rein in claims for unnecessary ER visits, arguing that they are one reason why U.S. health care costs are so much higher than in other nations. One reason why many Medicaid patients may be turning to emergency rooms for treatment is that Medicaid, unlike commercial insurance, does not require the people it covers — basically low-income families and adults as well as people with severe disabilities — to pay for part of the cost out of pocket, Tweedy said. They often don't feel there are other available options for care, either. One approach some hospitals have started using — setting up urgent care clinics near their ERs in order to triage care — is less common in urban areas where many Medicaid recipients live, he said. Virginia Medicaid is facing an unusual need for additional funds this year and next than the current budget for those years set aside: some $632.4 million. One reason for that is a $160 million shortfall Medicaid saw at the June 30 end of the last fiscal year, mainly because the post-pandemic decline in enrollment happened more slowly than expected, Tweedy told the committee. Others include a projected $289.7 million increase in fee for service payments, a $36.2 million increase in managed care rates, a $61.7 million increase in supplemental payments to hospitals and $59.2 million for Indian Health Clinics to cover specified nontribal costs. In addition, increased payments to Medicare — the federal insurance program for people ages 65 or older and people with certain disabilities — and pharmacy rebates are pushing up Medicaid costs.
