A standout student, Mangione graduated at the top of his high school class in 2016. NASSAU, Bahamas — Scottie Scheffler brought a new putting grip to the Hero World Challenge and felt enough improvement to be satisfied with the result, a 5-under 67 that left him three shots behind Cameron Young on Thursday. Young was playing for the first time since the BMW Championship more than three months ago and found great success on and around the greens of Albany Golf Club, chipping beautifully and holing four birdie putts from 15 feet or longer for his 64. He led by two shots over Justin Thomas in his first competition since his daughter was born a few weeks ago. Thomas ran off four straight birdies late in his round and was a fraction of an inch away with a fifth. The big surprise was Scheffler, the No. 1 player in golf who looked as good as he has all year in compiling eight victories, including an Olympic gold medal. His iron play has no equal. His putting at times has kept him from winning more or winning bigger. He decided to try to a "saw" putting grip from about 20 feet or closer — the putter rests between his right thumb and his fingers, with his left index finger pointed down the shaft. Scheffler last year began working with renowned putting instructor Phil Kenyon, and he says Kenyon mentioned the alternative putting grip back then. Only four of the 10 riders in the event cleared the course with no faults and Lahari posted the fastest time. There also was celebrity in the course itself: it was designed by Capt. Eventing is a combination of dressage, show jumping and cross-country, but since the Royal competition was held indoors, the course was a combination of show jumping and cross-country obstacles. Although the event was called a $20,000 challenge, Lahari said her winner’s slice of the prize money only amounted to $6,000. Over a cup of coffee in a viewing room overlooking the indoor ring at their farm, Lahari was full of praise for Audacious, an 11-year-old male standing 16 hands three inches tall. She has been riding him and training him for eight years and says he loves to perform in front of crowds. Despite the fact that it was her first-ever title in the Mad Barn event, Lahari has an impressive resumé. To start with, all the riders in the Mad Barn event were there by invitation, based on their past records. Lahari has been riding competitively since she was 11 years old and has represented Canada at various equestrian meets. She was a member of the Canadian team at the Nations Cup last year. She said she has been invited to the event for 12 years, adding that only high performance riders get invited. Currently, she is working to make the Canadian team for the World Equestrian Games in 2026. “You have to meet the qualifications, but also show consistency in results,” she said. The event at the Royal was her last competition of the year. She starts up again in January, with competitions on most weekends through to October. She spends the first four months of the year riding the circuit in Florida. When she is not riding competitively, Lahari trains both horses and young riders. She is well suited for the role, having started riding when she was just five years old. BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — A far-right populist took the lead in Romania’s presidential election Sunday, electoral data showed, and will likely face leftist Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu in a runoff in two weeks, an outcome that rocked the country's political landscape. Calin Georgescu, who ran independently, led the polls with around 22% of the vote, while Ciolacu of the Social Democratic Party, or PSD, trailed at 20.6%. Elena Lasconi of the Save Romania Union party, or USR, stood at about 17.4%, and George Simion, the leader of the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, or AUR, took 14.3%. After polls closed at 9 p.m. local time (1900GMT), 9.4 million people — about 52.4% of eligible voters — had cast ballots, according to the Central Election Bureau. Thirteen candidates ran for the presidency in the European Union and NATO member country, and will go to a second round on Dec. 8. The president serves a five-year term and has significant decision-making powers in areas such as national security, foreign policy and judicial appointments. Georgescu, 62, ran independently and was not widely known. He outperformed most local surveys, sending shockwaves through Romania's political establishment. After casting his ballot on Sunday, Georgescu said in a post on Facebook that he voted “For the unjust, for the humiliated, for those who feel they do not matter and actually matter the most ... the vote is a prayer for the nation.” Cristian Andrei, a political consultant based in Bucharest, told The Associated Press that Georgescu’s unexpected poll performance appears to be a “large protest or revolt against the establishment.” “The mainstream political parties have lost the connection with regular Romanians,” he said. “You don’t have strong candidates or strong leaders ... there are weak candidates, weak leaders, and the parties in general are pretty much disconnected.” Georgescu lacks an agenda, Andrei added, and has a vague and populist manifesto with positions that are “beyond the normal discourse." Middlebury tallied five College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honorees (Shane Farrell, Madden, Kyle Nilsson, Gavin Randolph and Joey Waterman). Five players earned spots on the United Soccer Coaches All-Region teams.
