The stock ultimately closed at $25.99 on the NASDAQ, up 2.63%, as investors digested news of a framework allowing the British telco to provide space-based cellular broadband across its 15 home markets and partners in 45 more countries. Vodafone ordered a gateway as part of the deal to route data AST SpaceMobile satellites would get from smartphones outside terrestrial coverage into the telco’s network and back to the user, enabling broadband and other services beyond the reach of cell towers. Financial details were not disclosed. Gateway to service Scott Wisniewsk, president and chief strategy officer for Texas-based AST SpaceMobile, told SpaceNews that the gateway is currently being installed in a country the companies plan to announce next year. AST SpaceMobile recently filed for initial testing approvals with Vodafone in the United Kingdom and Turkey. “These initial orders and installations are critical since we have a native cellular platform that is deeply integrated with the wireless operator core network and [radio access network [RAN],” Wisniewsk said via email. “We are installing five gateways in the United States and have gateways installed or nearing completion in half a dozen other countries.” He said AST SpaceMobile’s global roll-out would be coordinated closely with terrestrial partners, which would provide the cellular frequencies its satellites need to connect devices already in circulation. SpaceX deployed AST SpaceMobile’s first five in-house-built Block 1 commercial BlueBird satellites in September, each spanning 64 square meters, matching the size of the venture’s two-year-old BlueWalker-3 prototype. AST SpaceMobile plans to start deploying Block 2 BlueBirds next year, 3.5 times larger than their predecessors, with peak data rates of 120 megabits per second. “Given the large size of our satellites — the largest-ever to operate commercially in low Earth orbit — the field of view is also large and most countries can be served with only 1 or 2 gateways,” Wisniewsk added. Commercial backing The agreement comes after Vodafone joined Google and AT&T to invest a total $155 million in AST SpaceMobile, including $25 million from the British telco as a prepayment for future services. AST SpaceMobile has said 45-60 BlueBird satellites could provide continuous space-based cellular broadband in key markets, including the United States, its initial focus, where it has also partnered with AT&T rival Verizon. Mount Spurr, about 80 miles (129 kilometers) northwest of Anchorage, last erupted in 1992, spewing an ash cloud nearly 12 miles (19 kilometers) into the air, prompting flights to be canceled and people to don masks. Another eruption at the 11,100-foot (3,383-meter) stratovolcano could be severely disruptive to the city, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory. The observatory raised its alert status for Mount Spurr in October — from green to yellow — when the increase in seismic activity became pronounced and a ground deformation was spotted in satellite data. Observatory scientist David Fee said Friday there have been about 1,500 small earthquake below the volcano this year, compared to about 100 in a normal year. While that might seem like a lot, it’s “not an enormous amount,” Fee said. It could be a precursor to an eruption — or not. Similar seismic unrest occurred from 2004 to 2006 before subsiding without an eruption. “We don’t see any significant change in our data that would tell us that an eruption is imminent,” Fee said. “Things have been kind of this low-level unrest for a while now and we’re, of course, watching it very closely to detect any changes and what that might mean.” Scientists are monitoring seismic stations, global satellite data and a webcam for additional changes that would signal an impending eruption. If magma is moving closer to the surface, there would be an increase in earthquakes, ground deformations, the creation of a summit lake or fumaroles, which are vents that open in the surface to vent gas and vapors. Justus Terry, a defensive lineman from Manchester, Georgia, announced Friday he would be leaving his home state to play for Texas next year. Terry, who also was considering Georgia and Auburn, had been the nation’s top remaining uncommitted 2025 prospect. The addition of Terry gives Texas the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class, according to composite rankings of recruiting sites compiled by 247Sports. “We’re super pumped about this recruiting class,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said Thursday, before Terry had announced his decision. “This is a very talented group of players that I think not only fit the physical characteristics of what we’re looking for by position in our program, but I think meet the character and are going to fit nicely into our culture.” Although there will be an additional signing period in February, 247Sports officials said Texas should maintain its No. 1 standing. The 2024 contest pits six-time incumbent MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha of the BJP against Bherulal Choudhary of Shiv Sena (UBT). Lodha, a well-established figure in the constituency, has dominated the seat for over a decade, winning six consecutive terms. Only three candidates are contesting from the constituency. In the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections, Mangal Prabhat Lodha won a landslide victory with 93,538 votes (75.9 percent vote share), defeating Congress’s Heera Navaji Devasi, who secured only 21,666 votes (17.6 percent). Lodha’s margin of victory was over 70,000 votes, underscoring his dominance in the constituency. Choudhary has focused on these local issues in his campaign, hoping to tap into growing dissatisfaction with the status quo. In the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections, Malabar Hill had a total electorate of 295,577 voters. The voter turnout was relatively low at 41.71 percent, though turnout in the 2019 parliamentary election was higher at 56.11 percent. The constituency is home to around 7.3 percent Muslim voters, 5.37 percent SC voters, and 0.26 percent ST voters. Malabar Hill went to polls on November 20. The results will be announced on Saturday, 2024. With both candidates vying for the prestigious seat, this race is expected to be a tightly contested battle. Malabar Hill emerged as a key battleground, recording a voter turnout of 52.53 percent.
