Police say suspect in UnitedHealthcare CEO killing wasn't a client of the insurerLAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Thomas Brown insists he's focused on the job at hand and not the one he might have down the line. His immediate task as the interim coach of the Chicago Bears is helping the team finish strong over the final five games, starting this weekend at San Francisco. The rest of his life can wait. “I think about just the moment. ... I obviously understand the role that I'm in, understand what might come with it," he said Wednesday. "But I also understand that we make most situations bigger than what it has to be because of the outside noise, what everybody else puts a value on it.” The Bears are in a moment unlike any other in the history of the founding NFL franchise. They fired a head coach for the first time during a season when they let Matt Eberflus go on Friday with a 4-8 record and the team in a six-game losing streak marked by head-scratching decisions. They promoted Brown, who in a span of three weeks went from passing game coordinator to offensive coordinator and now the person in charge. The tipping point was a 23-20 loss at Detroit on Thanksgiving, when the Bears let the clock run down rather than call a timeout following a sack. It led to Caleb Williams throwing an incomplete pass from the Lions 41 as time expired when Chicago should have been able to run more than one play. Star cornerback Jaylon Johnson interrupted Eberflus' postgame speech and made his feelings clear. Other players had gone public in recent weeks with their frustrations over the coaching decisions, and they didn't exactly hide their emotions following the Detroit game. On Wednesday, defensive end DeMarcus Walker said he sensed a change was coming after the loss to the Lions. “You guys just look at the whole turnaround, how everything had been going, we just knew some changes were going to be made,” he said. The 38-year-old Brown now has a huge opportunity. He spent last season as Carolina's offensive coordinator and the previous three on Sean McVay's staff with the Los Angeles Rams — the final two as assistant head coach. Prior to that, he spent nine years as a college assistant, including stops at Wisconsin, Georgia, Miami and South Carolina. It's his job to help right a team that came into the season thinking a playoff spot was in reach. Williams' development obviously will be front and center. To that end, the No. 1 overall draft pick has looked more comfortable in the three games since Brown took over for the fired Shane Waldron as offensive coordinator, completing 75 of 117 passes for 827 yards with five touchdowns, no interceptions and a rating of 99.2. Though Brown will continue to call plays, the Bears have another new offensive coordinator in wide receivers coach Chris Beatty. “I think it is a stepping stone actually with my development because I think down the line I’ll have different OCs or different head coaches or whatever the case may be,” Williams said. “And so being able to handle it my first year, handle a new playbook, handle all these different changes, handle all of this I think it definitely will help the development instead of hurting it or anything like that.” Beyond the development of the prized quarterback, Brown also will be judged during his audition for the regular job on his preparation, decisions during games and command of the locker room. He said he reached out to each player individually on Friday and Saturday and tried to set a tone when the team met on Monday. “I want them to be excellent,” Brown said. “I can nitpick at every single play and tell a guy how he wasn’t perfect. And, so, perfection’s not the goal. It’s to excel at your craft.” Notes: The Bears had a lengthy injury report on Wednesday. WRs Keenan Allen (ankle) and DJ Moore (quad), RBs D'Andre Swift (quad) and Roschon Johnson (concussion), DB Elijah Hicks (ankle) and OL Ryan Bates (concussion) all missed practice. S Kevin Byard (shoulder) and OLs Darnnell Wright (knee) and Coleman Shelton (knee) were limited. AP NFL coverage: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL
Breaking News Don't miss out on the headlines from Breaking News. Followed categories will be added to My News. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is "cognitively healthy" after surgery to relieve bleeding pressure on his brain and should be leaving intensive care on Friday, his medical team said. A follow-up operation on Thursday to block blood flow to the affected area was a "success", Lula's doctor, Roberto Kalil, told a news conference at the Hospital Sirio-Libanes treating the 79-year-old president. The update came two days after the emergency surgery to drill through Lula's skull to relieve pressure built up in protective intracranial membranes. The injury was linked to a blow to the head Lula suffered in October, when he fell in a bathroom in his presidential residence. Lula's doctors stressed on Thursday that he was doing physically and mentally well, was awake and talking, and should be soon returning to his duties. "If everything continues as it is, at the beginning of next week the president should be discharged" from the Sao Paulo hospital, and "he will gradually resume his normal activity," Kalil said. He added that, while Lula would be able to work, his convalescence would still require "relative rest over several weeks." The president's "neurological examination is normal, he is very well," though "he should not exert himself physically or mentally," neurologist Rogerio Tuma added. - Fall was 'serious' - Early Thursday, doctors inserted a catheter in Lula's femoral artery to block blood flow going through the middle meningeal artery in Lula's head, to minimize the risk of a hemorrhage reoccurring. Kalil described the procedure as "routine" and "minimally invasive", carried out under sedation rather than anesthesia. The catheter was likely to be removed later Thursday. The doctor said there were no signs of any complications, and the longer that lasted, the better for Lula's prognosis. "Every week, every month plays in favor of a patient who has had a brain hemorrhage," he said. The Brazilian president's medical emergency this week started when he complained Monday of a headache while in Brasilia. An MRI scan found a hemorrhage between his brain and the dura mater membrane that protects it. He was rushed to the Hospital Sirio-Libanes -- the country's top medical facility -- where doctors carried out a trepanation, involving drilling through his skull to relieve pressure. After suffering his fall on October 19, Lula told an official from his Workers' Party that the accident had been "serious". In the weeks following, the president skipped planned overseas trips. But from mid-November he resumed his active schedule, hosting a G20 summit in Rio and attending a Mercosur summit last week in Uruguay. Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin has taken over some of Lula's workload in his absence, but the presidency has not officially tapped him to assume the full duties during the president's convalescence. Lula took up his current mandate in January 2023 after beating the previous, far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, in a tightly fought 2022 election. His latest medical emergency adds to a list of health problems he has suffered over the years, including treatment in 2011 for throat cancer, and a hip replacement operation last year. His increasing frailty throws up a question mark over whether he will run for re-election in 2026 elections. He has left the door open to that possibility, without confirming whether he would be a candidate or not, but there is no obvious figure on the left to take up his torch. bur/rmb/md Originally published as Brazil's Lula 'cognitively healthy' after operations More related stories Breaking News Macron prepares to name new French PM Macron prepares to name new French PM Read more Breaking News Syria govt pledges ‘rule of law’ after Assad’s overthrow Syria govt pledges 'rule of law' after Assad's overthrow Read moreEarlier in December, a company presenting itself as the energy company Enron announced its return with a new website and public presence, including billboards in the Houston area. The company also announced its new CEO, 28-year-old Connor Gaydos, known for co-creating the satirical 'Birds Aren't Real' conspiracy theory. Joining him in leadership are Magan Redino as president and COO, Daniel Wong as chief technology officer, and Rich Sybert as general counsel. In a video posted on Monday, Gaydos acknowledged Enron’s controversial past while hinting at "ground-breaking" plans for the future. The relaunch, however, comes with an unconventional twist. A review of Enron’s website reveals a disclaimer in the terms and conditions stating it is "First Amendment protected parody" and serves as "performance art" meant for entertainment purposes. This aligns with Gaydos’ history of satire, as he also co-owns 'The College Company,' the Arkansas-based entity holding the Enron logo’s trademark rights. Gaydos became popular as one of the co-founders of the 'Birds Aren't Real' movement, a satirical conspiracy that humorously claims birds are government surveillance drones. The movement, created to mock misinformation and conspiracy theories, has grown into a cultural phenomenon with official college chapters and an engaged online community. Gaydos and collaborator Peter McIndoe fabricated evidence, documents and a fake history to support their parody claims, using social media and creative cosplay. In 2020, 'The College Company' purchased the Enron name for $275. Since the Enron 'relaunch,' social media accounts under the name 'Enron' have surfaced, promoting the relaunch. Notably, the company has retained the original Enron logo and featured it in a full-page ad in the Houston Chronicle with the tagline, "We're back. Can we talk? (TM)." The Nevada State Republican Party posted this picture on social media after party chairman Michael McDonald, center, and five other Republicans signed a fake certificate in December 2020 falsely claiming that Donald Trump had won the 2020 presidential election in Nevada. Although not one of the fake electors, standing at the left is Jim Marchant, a 2020 election denier and conspiracy theorist who would be the Republican Party's nominee for secretary of state in 2022. When two of Nevada’s presidential electors sign the certificate declaring to Congress that Donald Trump is the winner of Nevada’s six electoral college votes next week, they will still be facing charges for sending a fake electoral college certificate to Congress in 2020. A year ago – three years after the fake electors had signed and sent the phony certificate – Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford filed charges against them in a Clark County court for offering a false instrument and uttering a forged instrument. The judge in Clark County dismissed that case in June, saying she lacked jurisdiction over events that took place in Northern Nevada. But Ford Thursday announced that his office had filed charges against Nevada’s six 2020 fake electors in Carson City. Ford filed the forgery charges in Carson City Thursday “as a preemptive measure to ensure that the statute of limitations on this charge does not lapse.” “My office still believes that Clark County is an appropriate venue for this case, and will continue to seek a ruling from the Nevada Supreme Court” to that effect, Ford said in a statement. But in the meantime “we are preserving our legal rights in order to ensure these fake electors do not escape justice,” he said. The fake electors’ actions constituted “direct attempts to both sow doubt in our democracy and undermine the results of a free and fair election,” Ford said. “Justice requires that these actions not go unpunished,” he said, adding “this is not going away.” Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump in Nevada by 33,596 votes in 2020. Two of the Republican presidential fake electors from 2020 – Nevada Republican Party Chair Michael McDonald and Clark County Republican Party Chair Jesse Law – are also listed as presidential electors this year, according to the Nevada Secretary of State’s office. The other four 2020 fake electors are Jim DeGraffenried, Duward James Hindle III, Shawn Meehan, and Eileen Rice. In addition to McDonald and Law, the other four presidential electors in 2024 are Bruce Parks, Kathyrun Njus, Robert Tyree, and Brian Hardy. Their meeting to cast Nevada’s electoral college votes – unlike those falsely filed by fake electors in 2020 – will be legitimate. Trump defeated Kamala Harris in Nevada by 46,008 votes in 2024. He has a history of involvement in terror-related activities, including his alleged role in the 2011 murder of Shaukat Shah, a leader of the Ahl-i-Hadith. Munshi has also served multiple jail terms for terrorism-related charges. During preliminary interrogation, Munshi admitted to having visited Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan multiple times using fake Pakistpassports, acting on instructions from his handlers. (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel )As we approach the end of 2024, the full Cold Moon will shine in the middle of December, bringing a lively social energy just in time for the holiday season. Celebrity astrologer Kyle Thomas, who is known for his cosmic guidance among celebrities, businesses and online influencers, spoke to "Good Morning America" about the best ways to take advantage of this engaging full moon. But first, let's break down the meaning of the Cold Moon and what to know about this particular celestial event. The Cold Moon will arrive on Dec. 15, according to Thomas. The Cold Moon gets its name because December is the month when the weather typically turns cold, according to NASA. The Old Farmer's Almanac states that some Native Americans also called the Cold Moon the Long Night Moon. The second name likely originates from the fact that the full moon in December occurs near the winter solstice, which has the longest night of the year, according to NASA. "The full moon takes a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite to the low sun, so the moon will be above the horizon longer than at other times of the year," NASA states. The zodiac sign of each full moon is determined by its position in the night sky relative to the astrological signs. This year, the Cold Moon occurs as a full moon in Gemini, an air sign associated with communication, technology, and short-distance travel, according to Thomas. It encourages mental connections, particularly with those in our immediate circles -- friends, neighbors, acquaintances, and siblings. "We will be motivated to express our minds and may be in the process of launching a significant writing, speaking, advertising, digital or social media project," Thomas added. "The pace of life will also quicken rapidly." Rituals and manifestations to try during the Cold Moon Many ancient cultures, from Chinese traditions to Hebrew holidays, celebrate celestial cycles and revere the power of the moon. For instance, Thomas noted that Gemini, an air sign, makes this an ideal time to integrate communication -- whether written or spoken -- into your rituals. "This is a great moment to communicate our desires to the world -- as well as to others," he explained. "Writing down explicit statements, manifestation goals, and plans can be particularly useful. Also, as an Air sign, using smoke, sage, or incense can be excellent tools during meditation or ritual." Potential meditations, mantras or journal prompts: Speak up and speak out, Aries! "You have an important message that you'd like to broadcast to the world. This full moon could help you to launch an important writing, speaking, advertising or social media endeavor to great success. People will be listening!" Thomas said. Wealth is top of mind, Taurus. "Prosperity could soon be on its way," Thomas explained. "The full moon should bring to [ a ] culmination an important financial matter for you - perhaps in the form of a raise, new job offer or large check." Claim your spotlight, Gemini. According to Thomas, "the most important full moon of the year has arrived for you, as you reach an important turning point. Something of vital personal significance will reach [ its ] culmination at this time, perhaps giving you closure that will improve your life going forward." Relax and recharge, Cancer. "This full moon will encourage you to reset your emotional, mental and physical batteries-you've earned it! Lie low and give yourself some much-needed TLC. If you are in need of finding a specialist, therapist or healer, this lunation could also aid you in doing so." Thomas added. Get out and mingle, Leo. "You're always popular, but with this full moon highlighting your friendships, you'll be on the top of everyone's holiday list!" Thomas explained. "You'll likely attend at least one dazzling event where you're the star of the show. Circulate amongst those who you love and make time to show how much you appreciate them." Embrace your success, Virgo. According to Thomas, "A major professional victory could now be within reach. A promotion, new job offer, milestone or opportunity for public praise may present itself near this time. Previous hard work will surely be celebrated." Keep an open mind for a new adventure, Libra. "You could now be ready to soar in a breathtaking new direction-or make plans to do so in 2024!" Thomas said. "This full moon will energize you to slightly shift the narrative of your life and examine what else you'd like to learn. Some Libras will make a decision or hear news regarding an academic, travelling, immigration or media endeavor." It's time to explore your intimacy department, Scorpio. "The full moon will be helping you to get in touch with your most sensitive parts-emotionally and physically," Thomas explained. "If single, you could attract someone who knows how to complete you in every way. If taken, you'll be assessing if your authentic needs are being fulfilled by your partner." Take a closer look at your partnership, Sagittarius. "This full moon will help you to grow closer with someone in business, collaboration or love," Thomas added. "Single Sagittarians may have luck finding a perfect match, so be sure to put yourself out there. Love won't find you if you're not making an effort! Those already committed could decide it's time to make long-term plans, move in, get engaged or even be wed." Get ready to make progress, Capricorn. According to Thomas, "the full moon will make you busier than ever." "You may now be focused upon an important project for your employer that must have final approval," he said. "You could be putting everything you have into completing the task, but be sure to do so, as it could end up making you shine brighter than ever in your boss's eyes." Open your heart to love, Aquarius. "Get excited for a vibrant, romantic period to appear," Thomas added. "Single Aquarians must not let this energy go to waste, as you could find someone who is a soulmate or who lights your heart on fire." Toast to the holidays and reflect on the year, Pisces. "This full moon will bring to [ a ] culmination a domestic, family or real estate matter for you," Thomas said. "Some Pisceans could be hosting a lovely gathering at their home with their kindred. Others may be contemplating a big renovation, redecoration or move now or in the coming year."The latest international test results have some good news for New Zealand primary school science teachers. The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study ( TIMSS ) data show average performance of Year 5 students is trending upwards. For Year 9 science, overall results hold steady. Administered once every four years, TIMSS is one of the few checks New Zealand currently undertakes to measure progress towards equity and excellence in education. These new results are based on data from 2023. New Zealand is very much in the middle of the pack among other countries, though. There’s a worrying gap emerging between the achievement of Year 9 boys and girls. And the gap in results for students from different socioeconomic statuses remains a problem. In 2023, 71 education systems participated in the study. While it’s great news that the average science performance of Year 5 pupils has increased compared to 2019, 21 countries (out of 58) performed better than our Year 5s in science. And 16 (out of 43) performed better than our Year 9s in science. In both cases, students achieved better average scores in Australia, England, Ireland, the United States, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Macao and the Republic of Korea. New Zealand still has work to do to compete favourably internationally. At the same time, current intersecting social and environmental crises globally demand the country carefully examines the role of school science education in contributing to the future. The socioeconomic gap As well as enhancing New Zealand’s performance relative to other education systems, work is still needed to address issues of socioeconomic inequity across our education system. Year 5 students from more economically affluent backgrounds achieved better on TIMSS, on average, than students from more economically disadvantaged backgrounds. New Zealand has one of the largest differences in achievement between those who are more economically disadvantaged than those who are economically affluent – only six countries have bigger differences. Importantly, there are low performers and advanced performers within each socioeconomic group. In other words, students can excel no matter what their economic background – and they can also not achieve. However, the risk profile for not achieving changes with economic advantage, as shown for Year 5 students’ science achievement. This is particularly problematic, given 21% of our students are from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. System insights As well as assessing students’ abilities in relation to knowing, applying and reasoning in science, TIMSS collects a host of other data. While the New Zealand education system needs to be more equitable and to perform better internationally, the vast majority of primary school teachers are expected to be generalists. This means they teach across all curriculum areas while working with diverse student needs. According the TIMSS data, fewer Year 5 students in New Zealand are taught by a teacher with a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in primary education with a specialisation in science – 11% of New Zealand students compared to the international average of 31%. In addition, just 28% of Year 5 teachers in New Zealand report regularly using scientific concepts to explain phenomena (28%), well below the international average of 49%. Curriculum refresh The findings emerging from TIMSS – both heartening and concerning – are particularly salient in light of the recently paused development of the new science curriculum. The next international benchmarking New Zealand will be involved in is the 2025 Programme for International Student Assessment ( PISA ). This study assesses the knowledge and skills of 15-year-olds from 81 countries. The PISA 2025 Science Framework is already available, identifying five broad topics that will be used in the assessment. These are health and disease, natural resources, environmental quality, hazards, and frontiers of science and technology. How these themes – and eventual results – will guide future curriculum changes in science remains to be seen. But regardless of the paused curriculum refresh, it’s clear there is more work to be done on science education in New Zealand.

Credit: Ian Moore and Zain bin Awais / Mashable Composite; We Are / DigitalVision / f11photo / iStock / Getty More than 100,000 people are expected to make their annual trek to Las Vegas this coming January – and no they're not taking the trip to gamble (mostly). We're, of course, talking about the Consumer Electronics Show, better known as CES . The annual trade show is the largest technology conference of its kind. Every January, some of the biggest and some of the newest tech companies and startups show up to show off their latest products as well as prototypes for potential future technologies. And CES 2025 will be no exception. So, what should you expect to come out of this CES. Mashable takes a look at some of the latest news, rumors, and announcements to give you a sneak peek at what's likely to be the main events of CES. New TVs Televisions are always a showstopper at CES and CES 2025 will likely continue that streak. We'll likely see plenty of new Smart TVs touting AI-integration. But, alongside announcements regarding new TV consumer products, will be the real headline-stealers that you likely won't find in-stores anytime soon. LG, for example, is already promoting its "World Premiere press conference" at CES on Jan. 6, the day before the show floor opens to the public. It's very possible that they are going to announce a brand new TV product that attendees will be able to experience in-person the very next day. Just last month, LG announced a new stretchable display, the first that's able to expand by 50 percent – from a 12-inch display to an 18-inch one. LG might have that at the event. HDMI 2.2 Along with brighter OLED displays and more affordable Mini-LED options, there's another big TV announcement likely coming to CES: HDMI 2.2. HDMI Forum will announce a "new HDMI specification release" at CES 2025.... Matt Binder

Carolina Panthers tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders was taken to a hospital for a neck injury after landing on his head while making a catch late in the first half of Sunday's 30-27 home loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. As Sanders was brought down near the sideline after a 10-yard reception, he was flipped upside down and landed directly on the top of his helmet as he went out of bounds on the tackle by cornerback Trent McDuffie. After receiving attention from the team's medical staff, Sanders was strapped to a backboard and taken off the field on a cart with 40 seconds remaining in the half. He was taken to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for observation and later released Sunday afternoon, according to the team. On the CBS broadcast following halftime, Panthers head coach Dave Canales said Sanders had movement in all his extremities, while extreme precaution was taken because of back tightness. CBS reported he was being examined for a concussion before later amending that to a neck injury. The 21-year-old rookie out of Texas had a team-leading three receptions for the Panthers at the half for 49 yards. In 11 games this season, Sanders has 29 receptions for 302 yards and a touchdown. Sanders was a fourth-round selection in the NFL draft in April. --Field Level Media
