The People's Party Of Canada has seemingly faded from the scene. The party that went by that name has been largely inactive. But the political ferment and fervour once associated with that movement have grown more intense as it has been mimicked by Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre. There is one difference between then and now that could alter that trajectory. The PPC was driven largely by conservatism. It never had a singular leader of its own whose brand was a driving force in itself. The current movement is essentially copycatted by Poilievre. Its future, short-term and long, will depend largely on him. So imagine my bewilderment when Poilievre's mysterious turnaround from Harper to far right came. Most became aware of Poilievre's shortcomings – and continue to compensate for them. Perhaps, they view their leader as a self-regulatory strategy, riding the disciplinary coattails of the more fortunate and experienced politicos. Taken together, within the social self-regulatory process, by which we draw close to others to compensate for our own flaws, the overwhelming evidence suggests that the two leaders and their platforms couldn't possibly be any different. Perhaps the mere presence of Poilievre signals the fall of actual conservatism. But there remains the possibility that should Poilievre be more of an albatross for his party, it would indeed be an irony if he ultimately saved Bernier from another political shellacking.12. In exchange for those new tools, the state says we’re getting -- for the first time -- a new commitment from insurance companies to sell more insurance -- especially in wildfire-distressed areas. Consumer Investigator Chris Chmura asked California’s Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara in an interview on Friday when consumers can expect to see impacts. “We’re seeing the impact already,” Lara said. “Just this week, California's second-largest home insurance company, Farmers, said they’re going to expand in California,” he continued, recognizing an announcement Farmers made on Wednesday in which the company cited an improved insurance market in California. In October, Lara told NBC Bay Area he believes consumers will start seeing more companies return to California in mid-to-late 2025, a belief he reiterated on Friday. “By mid-next year, you’re going to start seeing more companies come in, you’re gonna start seeing these rates really reflect homeowners' investment in their property, and we’re going to -- for the first time-- use technology so we’re not relying on outdated historical data that we know no longer really meets the needs given climate change and what we’re seeing,” Lara said. (AP) — Gov. Phil Murphy has asked the Biden administration to put more resources into an investigation of mysterious drone sightings that have been reported in New Jersey and nearby states. Murphy, a Democrat, made the request in a letter Thursday, noting that state and local law enforcement remain “hamstrung” by existing laws and policies in their efforts to successfully counteract any nefarious activity of unmanned aircraft. He posted a copy of the letter on the social media platform X . “This leaves action surrounding the (drones) squarely on the shoulders of the federal government,” Murphy said. “More federal resources are needed to understand what is behind this activity.” Murphy and other officials have repeatedly stressed that there is no evidence that the aircraft pose a national security or a public safety threat, or have a foreign nexus. The Pentagon also has said they are not U.S. military drones. The drones have drawn intense public concern and curiosity since residents first reported seeing them last month. Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia said from four to 180 aircraft have been reported to authorities since Nov. 18, appearing from dusk till 11 p.m. The flying objects have been spotted near the Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. military research and manufacturing facility, and over President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster, but the number of reported sightings has grown greatly since then. Drones were also spotted in Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut and other parts of the Mid-Atlantic region. The FBI, Federal Aviation Administration and other state and federal agencies involved in the investigation have not corroborated any of the reported sightings with electronic detection, and reviews of available images appear to show many of the reported drones are actually manned aircraft. They also say there have been no confirmed sightings in restricted air space. It’s also possible that a single drone has been seen and reported more than once, officials said. Some federal lawmakers have called on the military to “shoot down” the drones. The drones also appear to avoid detection by traditional methods such as helicopter and radio, according to a state lawmaker who was briefed by the Department of Homeland Security. In one case, a medevac helicopter was unable to pick up a seriously injured car accident victim in Branchburg Township in Somerset County late last month due to drones hovering near the planned landing zone, according to NJ.com. The FAA said Thursday that it does not have a report on this incident. Drones are legal in New Jersey for recreational and commercial use but are subject to local and FAA regulations and flight restrictions. Operators must be FAA certified. Witnesses say the drones they think they have seen in New Jersey appear to be larger than those typically used by hobbyists.

Southampton made light of Portsmouth's floodlight failure on Wednesday night by mocking their arch-rivals with a witty social media post. Pompey were due to host Millwall in the Championship at Fratton Park, but fans were left in darkness when the lights at the stadium cut out just minutes before kick-off. The hosts posted on social media that they were "looking into" a power issue just before 7:50pm. But it was almost an hour later before a further update was issued, with the game called off just after 8.40pm . And Saints made the most of an opportunity to rub salt into their rivals' wounds by sharing a picture of their own stadium lit up at night with the caption: " Football under the lights". The post went down a storm with fans of both Southampton and Millwall. One Saints supporter wrote: "Brilliant that," while another said: "Might be the best post ever from Admin. Superb". Southampton's posts echoed chants made by Millwall fans, who conjured up a chant of, "How s*** must you be, Southampton have lights". A Portsmouth fan even got in the act and begrudgingly admitted: "You know what, we deserve that". Portsmouth chief executive Andy Cullen spoke to the media after the match was postponed and explained that the club lost power in the stadium at around 7.35pm. He told BBC Sounds : "We were able to restore the floodlights just after 8pm and I have to give full credit to the match officials, who gave us every opportunity that we could to fix the problem and get the power back on. "We then got to a point where the floodlights back and the emergency lighting was on in most of the stands, however, there were still issues in terms of non-emergency lighting and other areas, such as CCTV which wasn't working to its full extent. So we had a decision to make in terms of crowd safety." He went on to explain that another issue was encountered at 8.30pm involving the Millwall fans and their ability to make it home safely. He added: "There's more to a match than just 22 players on a football pitch. We had a capacity crowd here tonight and we did not have the confidence that we could get through the whole game with other lighting not working. "We then got to 8.30 - we still felt there was an opportunity to push it through - but then there was a further problem in terms of the last trains going back to London for the Millwall supporters. They would not have been able to necessarily get those last trains back, so a decision at that point had to be made. "I'm really disappointed and upset that we've had to call the game off. But it was the only logical decision we could make at that particular time in the interests of everyone's safety."
