Donald Trump 's showering praise on the late Jimmy Carter ... saying he did his best to improve the lives of his fellow Americans -- and, the country owes him a debt. The president-elect posted to his social media platform, Truth Social, Sunday ... only about an hour after the Carter Center announced the former president had passed away at 100. In his message, Trump writes that anyone who has been president knows it's a very exclusive club ... and, only members in its ranks can understand the responsibility of leading the country. DJT says JC faced numerous issues when he was president ... and, he did everything he could to "improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude." Trump says he and his wife Melania are thinking of the Carter family at this difficult time ... and, he urges his followers to keep them in their prayers. It's a stark change to Trump and Carter's relationship while the latter was still alive ... just two months ago, on Carter's 100th birthday , Trump called Joe Biden the worst president ever -- before saying Jimmy was "the happiest man because Carter is considered a brilliant president by comparison.” Carter passed away surrounded by family Sunday night after spenging nearly two years in hospice care. His wife, Rosalynn Carter, passed away last year at the age of 96. Tributes from all over the political world are pouring in for Carter ... including from President Joe Biden who called him an "extradordinary leader" and former president Barack Obama who wrote Jimmy taught the world "what it means to live a life of grace, dignity, justice, and service." It seems Jimmy's bringing people from all sides of the political spectrum together.
No. 2 Ohio State takes control in the 2nd half and runs over No. 5 Indiana 38-15On Sunday, the Los Angeles Lakers finalized a deal that sent guard D’Angelo Russell to the Brooklyn Nets. Together with Russell, the Lakers sent Maxwell Lewis and three second-round picks to the Nets for Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The 2024-25 NBA season has not been kind to Russell . He started the campaign as the Lakers’ starting point guard for the first eight games. However, first-year head coach JJ Redick adjusted the lineup and put the 6-foot-4 guard as the lead guard for the second unit. The move benefitted the team as they went on to win six straight games. However, it affected Russell’s performance and his numbers started to decline. With his diminishing role, a change was needed. This led the Lakers’ front office to send him back to the Nets, the same team the organization sent Russell in 2017. Ahead of his second chance to play in Brooklyn, NBA Insider Dan Woike reported that the guard is “excited” to return to the Nets. “He’s excited for a new opportunity, obviously saw his role diminishing with Lakers,” Woike posted on Bluesky. Report: D’Angelo Russell saw his role diminishing with Lakers, is ‘excited’ for new opportunity with Nets https://t.co/BFxdBwGzIP — Legion Hoops (@LegionHoops) December 29, 2024 Russell played 29 games for the Lakers this season, averaging 12.4 points, 2.8 rebounds and 4.7 assists. The 2015-16 All-Rookie’s average of 26 minutes this season is the lowest since the Lakers signed him in the 2022–2023 campaign. How good was D’Angelo Russell during his first stint with the Nets? D’Angelo Russell spent two seasons with the Nets during his third and fourth seasons in the league. While the team didn’t have much success, it helped Russell’s career as he turned into an All-Star guard. In his first season in Brooklyn, the point guard took some time to adjust to the system as he averaged 15.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 5.2 assists. His second year in Brooklyn was better as he averaged 20 points for the first time. Russell averaged 21.1 points, 3.9 rebounds and 7.0 assists while shooting 36.9% from downtown. The point guard was the only player who had at least 20 points. During his time with the Nets, Russell was surrounded by borderline All-Stars in Spencer Dinwiddie, Joe Harris and Caris LeVert. The team made it to the postseason but only lasted in the first round as they couldn’t beat the Philadelphia 76ers. This time around, Russell will be welcomed to the Nets in the same situation where there isn’t a clear-cut All-Star on the roster. However, he’ll play with some of the top young stars Cam Thomas and Cam Johnson. That is if they don’t get traded this season. With Easter Sunday falling on April 20 next year, customers shared their confusion on social media after finding chocolate eggs and hot cross buns already for sale in shops including Morrisons, Tesco and Asda. One user, @Jingle1991, shared an image of Malteser Bunnies in Sainsbury’s on Christmas Eve and pointed out: “Jesus hasn’t even been born yet.” Meanwhile, Gary Evans from Margate shared a shot of Creme Eggs on display in Morrisons in Margate on Boxing Day. “I just think its crazy that everything is so superficial and meaninglessly commercial... (there’s) something quite frantic about it,” the 66-year-old told the PA news agency. No Shame.Morrisons.Easter eggs.Boxing Day. December 26th.Peace on Earth — Gary Evans (@GaryEva04679693) Joseph Robinson found Easter confectionary including Cadbury Mini Eggs, and themed Kit-Kat and Kinder Surprise products at his local Morrisons in Stoke-on-Trent on Friday evening. “It’s funny, as they’ve not even managed to shift the Christmas chocolates off the shelves yet and they’re already stocking for Easter,” the 35-year-old admin support worker told PA. “I wish that Supermarkets weren’t so blatantly consumerist-driven and would actually allow customers and staff a time to decompress during the Christmas period.” It's not even a full 2025 and you're already stocking for easter.Kindly get in the bin — Joseph (@stokegoblin) Asked if he was tempted to make a purchase, Mr Robinson added: “As a vegan it holds no appeal to me!” Mike Chalmers, a devout Christian from Chippenham, Wiltshire, was slightly less critical after spotting a display entitled: “Celebrate this Easter with Cadbury.” Easter is for life, not just for Christmas(Photo today in Morrisons!) — Mike Chalmers (@realMChalmers) “Christmas and Easter are the two centrepoints of the Christian good news story so it’s no bad thing to see the connections,” the 44-year-old said. “It’s about more than shapes of chocolate though!” Marketing consultant Andrew Wallis admitted he was surprised to see Easter eggs in the Co-op in Kilgetty, Pembrokeshire, but added it also illustrates “forward-thinking” from big businesses. Christmas isn’t even over, and Easter eggs are already on the shelves. Say what you want about it—but big brands don’t wait. They plan ahead and act fast. Are you doing the same? Your future self will thank you — andrewwallis (@andrewwallis) “It made me reflect on how big brands are always thinking ahead and planning early,” the 54-year-old from the Isle of Man, who provides marketing advice to the fitness industry, told PA. “My message to retailers would be: while planning ahead is important, it’s also essential to be mindful of consumer sentiment. “Some might feel it’s too early for seasonal products like this but others might see it as a sign of forward-thinking. “Striking the right balance is key to keeping customers happy.”
The chalky ground beneath me threatens to crumble away. I am some 80 metres up the White Cliffs of Dover, using tufts of grass as ladder rungs to haul myself further into the sky. The top of the cliff lies just a few metres above, but getting there means a sideways traverse, away from the stable grass holds, and onto an exposed arête sliced between two overhangs. My stomach lurches as I train my eyes down the slope, trickles of dislodged pebbles bouncing off into the void beneath me. As my palms dampen with sweat in the searing July heat, the realisation hits me that a descent would be riskier than to continue up. I suddenly feel very small, very alone, and a long way from the flat refuge of Cambridge. It may be famed for its minds, but Cambridge is no place for climbers. Characterised by a relentlessly flat landscape shaped by centuries of the River Cam’s drainage, this is the UK’s flattest city. Spots like Midsummer Common or Jesus Green offer open, uninterrupted skies, with the iconic towers of King’s Chapel visible on the horizon from miles around. This flatness has seen biking become the city’s favoured mode of transport. While this is handy if you’re running late to a lecture, the landscape can feel stifling and monotonous for those seeking more varied terrain. Despite being 40 miles inland, much of Cambridge’s elevation sits at only 10 metres; some of the county’s areas are even sea level. So, it was here, in these endless fens, that my inspiration came to seek an entirely different landscape – to climb the White Cliffs of Dover. “The desire to climb is not new to the University, with the ‘night climbers’ perhaps being one of Cambridge’s most fascinating secret societies” “Ottavio,” I said, pointing to the cliffs towering above us back in the summer. “Reckon someone could reach the top of that?” “I doubt it,” my friend replied. “Way too steep. Maybe if, well actually I don’t think...” And so, the seed was planted. The cliffs loomed large in my mind in the ensuing weeks of corporate monotony during this interval between academic years. When our days off aligned, we returned to Dover. Our location was Samphire Hoe, a nature reserve composed of nearly five million cubic metres of rubble deposits from the Channel Tunnel excavation. We chose this section of the cliff as it is less steep than the vertical, postcard-esque cliffs above the Port of Dover a kilometre down the coast. Instead of the panoramic skies offered at Cambridge, here we indulged in expansive horizons of the English Channel, with distant ferries like caterpillars on an infinitely blue leaf, and France visible just 22 miles away. Like Cambridge, the Dover Cliffs are entrenched in history. They represented the bastion of British freedom from a seemingly imminent Nazi invasion during the early years of World War II. Soldiers were stationed in tunnels here, using pioneering technology developed by many of the brilliant minds of the time. King’s College alumni Alan Turing, for instance, cracked the German Enigma code, significantly helping Britain’s war victory. But the history of these cliffs dates back much further. “The University has also produced pioneering adventurers over the years, most notable of which was early Everest explorer George Mallory, who studied at Magdalene between 1905 to 1909” Around 30 years before Cambridge University was founded, Henry II built Dover Castle in the 1180s. Some 500 years prior, Saint Augustine brought Christianity to Britain when he landed a few miles up the coast – a legacy reflected in the iconic church architecture of Cambridge’s college chapels. The desire to climb is not new to the University, with the ‘night climbers’ perhaps being one of Cambridge’s most fascinating secret societies. Shrouded in mystery, this group have scaled some of the town’s most iconic buildings in the cover of darkness since the early 20th century. One member abseiled into a Trinity Ball in 2000, and in 2009, the group made national headlines are after leaving four Santa hats on the spires of King’s Chapel. “By contrast, the Rambling Club are unbothered by this lack of elevation” The University has also produced pioneering adventurers over the years, most notable of which was early Everest explorer George Mallory, who studied at Magdalene between 1905 to 1909. In his book , Emmanuel Fellow Robert Macfarlane recounts his Cantabrigian longing for elevation: “Stuck on the tablelands of Cambridgeshire... I lusted for a break. The only relief was the dark church towers which punctuated the horizon, and the white spires of the colleges, pirouetting away into thin air.” By contrast, the Rambling Club are unbothered by this lack of elevation. “The flatness can mess with your mind on long distances when you see the expanses of impossible vastness, but it’s kind of exciting when that happens,” their Treasurer tells me. “I love mountains, but the flat land here has charm and character too.” Cambridge’s Mountaineering Club (CUMC) keeps this spirit of adventure alive, offering regular trips to the Peak District. READ MORE An ode to the welfare walk For me, this longing led me to Dover. Upon reaching the beach that scorching July day, we gazed at the rock above, drawing a potential route in our minds. Far from being a place of barren sterility, the cliff face was alive. During my free-solo ascent (no safety ropes), I passed beetles, orchids and bees, all thriving in this isolated utopia, a place idyllic for them but perilous for us. Reaching the top was a moment of bliss, earned through fear and fatigue as the panorama of the English Channel unfurled in front of me. But my thoughts drifted back to Cambridge. Returning here reminded me that adventure isn’t confined to the highest places or most dazzling viewpoints; it can be found anywhere with serenity, challenge and the space to dream. Cambridge may not soar, but it gives us the wings to do so. Support is the independent newspaper for the University of Cambridge, established in its current form in 1947. The NFL's security division is warning players to be aware of professional burglars targeting the homes of pro athletes. The Athletic reported Thursday that the NFL sent a memo to teams that outlines the threat. "The homes of professional athletes across multiple sports leagues have become increasingly targeted for burglaries by organized and skilled groups," read the memo, which was obtained by The Athletic. "Law enforcement officials have noted these groups appear to exploit team schedules to target athletes' homes on game days." NBC News reported Wednesday that law enforcement is working to figure out whether an international crime syndicate is involved. The Athletic reported that the memo includes tips for home security and also gives recommendations about the use of social media, such as not posting photos of items that would attract thieves. Players also learned via the memo how homes are targeted and how burglars enter. Mahomes hasn't said much about the burglary, other than to call it "disappointing" and "frustrating." "I can't get into too many of the details because the investigation is still ongoing," he said. "But obviously something that you don't want to happen to really anybody, but obviously yourself." It's not clear what was stolen from Mahomes' home in Belton, Mo., during the Oct. 6 incident. But Kelce apparently lost $20,000 in cash in the burglary at his home in Leawood, Kan., the following day when the Chiefs played the New Orleans Saints on "Monday Night Football," according to a police report. The burglary at the home of Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis in River Hills, Wis., occurred Nov. 2 during the Bucks' home game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He said the perpetrators "took most of my prized possessions" and is offering a reward for the return of his property. "Any info that leads to the return of any of my belongings will be rewarded handsomely," Portis said. "Let me know, thank you." --Field Level Media
Education Loan Provider Credila Financial Services Files IPO Draft With SEBIThe State Bank of India (SBI) has warned its customers about a new kind of fraud. In this scam, fraudsters impersonate officials of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or the Income Tax Department. The bank warned that these impostors may threaten with legal action or heavy fines to extort money from unsuspecting individuals. Modus operandi of the fraudsters The fraud usually starts with the scammer identifying a potential victim and reaching out, mostly through video calls on messaging apps like WhatsApp . They use bait, like personal information or KYC details, to convince the person that they have critical information about them. This can be anything from property transactions to income tax details, which may have been sourced from public sources or data leaks. Scammers exploit fear and panic Once the victim is convinced of the scammer's authenticity, they are told a fabricated story about tax evasion or legal issues that could lead to arrest. This creates a state of panic, which the fraudster exploits to their advantage. In some cases, they may even stage an interrogation process to further intimidate the victim into sharing additional information like Aadhaar details and bank account specifics. Fraudsters offer escape route for money The final act of the scam is where the fraudster offers an escape route from the alleged legal troubles. They convince the victim that all their issues can be resolved with a bribe, asking them to transfer money to different bank accounts as part of an ongoing investigation. The scammers assure victims that these funds would be returned once the investigation is completed. Phishing and impersonation frauds are a global issue Sheetal R Bhardwaj, an executive member of the Association of Certified Financial Crime Specialists (ACFCS), has categorized this kind of scam as "phishing" or "social engineering." She stressed that such scams are not merely an Indian phenomenon but a major global issue. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in the US reports millions of dollars lost to fraud every year, underscoring the growing problem as technology evolves and online transactions surge. Precautionary measures against such frauds Bhardwaj has also suggested a few precautionary measures to protect yourself from such scams. These include verifying the identity of the caller/sender, not sharing personal/financial information with unexpected contacts, being skeptical of threats related to legal action/fines, and reporting any suspicious activity to your bank and local authorities. She also recommends enabling two-factor authentication on bank accounts and using strong, unique passwords for different services.
Ranchi, Nov 23 (PTI) In a stunning comeback, Hemant Soren’s JMM-led alliance on Saturday stormed to power in Jharkhand for a second consecutive term, winning 56 seats in the 81-member assembly, despite an all-out blitz by the BJP-led NDA which managed only 24 seats. The majority mark in the state assembly is 41 seats. The BJP was confident that it could turn the tide in its favour through an aggressive campaign that targeted CM Soren’s leadership, and raised issues like "infiltration" from Bangladesh and the government’s alleged "corruption." Though the BJP failed to replicate the Maharashtra triumph, where it secured a landslide, its vote share in the eastern state was more than the JMM. The BJP contested 68 seats and registered a 33.18 per cent vote share as compared to JMM’s 23.44 per cent. The BJP won 21 seats and emerged as the second largest party. JMM contested 43 seats and won 34, the highest-ever seats won by the party. The Congress got 16 seats, RJD 4 and the CPI (ML) secured 2 seats in the INDIA bloc. The aggressive BJP campaign by its top brass, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, failed to resonate in front of the 'Adivasi' card played by the JMM, which also sought the people's sympathy over the arrest of chief minister Soren. The JMM’s campaign also focused on promises of welfare schemes and accused the BJP-led Centre of using the ED and CBI as tools against rival parties. Both Hemant Soren and his wife Kalpana managed to create a wave of sympathy among the tribal electorate, and despite the anti-incumbency sentiment, the BJP failed to capitalise on it, according to poll analysts. Soren, who retained the Barhait seat by defeating BJP’s Gamliyel Hembrom by a margin of 39,791 votes, had to resign as the CM in January before being arrested by the ED in a money laundering case. He was released on bail by the high court in June, and in July, he returned as the chief minister of the state, replacing Champai Soren. In his first reaction to the poll outcome, Soren termed the INDIA bloc’s strong performance in the Jharkhand elections as a “passing of the exam of democracy.” “I express my gratitude to the people for this stupendous performance,” he said. Assam chief minister and Jharkhand BJP election co-in-charge Himanta Biswa Sarma described the BJP’s loss as “painful.” Sarma aggressively campaigned against the JMM and accused it of sheltering "infiltrators". “The loss in Jharkhand is deeply painful for me personally, even though we secured victory in all five by-elections in Assam,” Sarma said. Internal bickering within the BJP, especially over nominations for turncoats, seemed to have further hampered the party’s prospects. The RJD also made a surprise showing, winning four of the six seats it contested. The CPI(ML) Liberation secured two out of four seats. The LJP (Ram Vilas) won its lone contested seat, and the JD(U) won one of the two seats it fought. The AJSU party, which contested 10 seats, was almost wiped out, retaining only one seat in Mandu by a slender margin of 231 votes. Its leader, Sudesh Mahto, lost the Sili seat. Soren’s wife, Kalpana, who played a key role in revitalising the JMM following her husband’s arrest, won from Gandey by a margin of 17,142 votes defeating BJP’s Muniya Devi. Kalpana won the seat in a bypoll on June 4 this year after it fell vacant following the resignation of JMM MLA Sarfaraz Ahmad. Kalpana’s political journey, which was never her initial choice, began in earnest after her husband's arrest by the ED in connection with a money laundering case. Despite the personal and political challenges posed by her husband's legal battles, Kalpana has proven to be a resilient and dynamic leader. Another key plank of the BJP's campaign was the removal of Champai Soren as chief minister shortly after Hemant Soren’s release on bail in June. The BJP framed this as an issue of how a tribal leader had been insulted by the JMM-led coalition. Hemant Soren also accused the BJP of spending over Rs 500 crore on "malicious campaigns" against him. JMM’s populist schemes like Maiyan Samman Yojna, which provides financial assistance of Rs 1,000 to women in the 18-50 years age bracket and promises to increase it to Rs 2,500 post results, went well with the masses across the state. Soren waived farm loans up to Rs 2 lakh aimed at benefiting over 1.75 lakh farmers. Additionally, his government waived outstanding electricity bills and introduced a scheme providing free electricity for up to 200 units besides introducing welfare schemes like a universal pension. Babulal Marandi, state BJP president, won the Dhanwar seat by 35,438 votes, and former CM Champai Soren won in Seraikela by 20,447 votes. However, Leader of Opposition Amar Kumar Bauri faced a crushing defeat in Chandankiyari, losing by 33,733 votes. The elections recorded a voter turnout of 67.74%, the highest since the state’s formation in 2000. In 2019, the JMM-led alliance won 47 seats, snatching power from the BJP. JMM had won 30 seats, while Congress bagged 16, apart from the one seat bagged by the RJD. The BJP had secured 25 seats, JVM-P three, AJSU Party two, and CPI-ML and NCP one each, besides two Independents emerging victorious. SpaceX knocked out a midnight launch from Cape Canaveral on Sunday, but has a midnight Monday launch on tap from Kennedy Space Center to cap off a record year for the Space Coast. The Sunday launch saw a Falcon 9 lift off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station’s Space Launch Complex 40 carrying communication satellites for Astranis Space Technologies Corp. The mission was delayed from a Dec. 20 attempt that saw the booster shut down as the countdown clock reached 0. SpaceX ended up switching boosters for the mission. This one, flying for the seventh time, including this year’s Crew-8 and Polaris Dawn missions, made a recovery landing on the droneship A Shortfall of Gravitas stationed in the Atlantic. It marked the 92nd launch from the Space Coast for 2024, already 20 more than the 72 seen from all providers in 2023, and one more to go. SpaceX’s final launch of the year could come at midnight with another Falcon 9 carrying 21 Starlink satellites set to lift off from KSC’s Pad 39-A during launch window that runs until 3:28 a.m. and backup opportunities on Dec. 31 during the same window. Space Launch Delta 45’s weather squadron forecasts a 60% chance for good launch conditions as a front moves though the Florida peninsula on Sunday. The first-stage booster for that mission is flying for the 16th time having previously flown the Crew-6 mission among 15 other flights. It will aim for a recovery landing on the droneship Just Read the Instructions in the Atlantic. It will mark the end of a busy weekend for SpaceX, which also flew a Starlink mission from California late Saturday. Elon Musk’s company will have flown 134 missions of its Falcon family of rockets with 62 from Cape Canaveral, 26 from KSC, including the two Falcon Heavy launches of the year, and 46 from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base. It also flew its in-development Starship and Super Heavy on four suborbital test flights from its Texas launch site Starbase. For the Space Coast, the KSC launch will mark 93 launches for the year, with all but five from SpaceX. The other five were all from United Launch Alliance, which flew three different rockets from two launch pads. 2024 saw the debut of its Vulcan rocket in January, which flew a second time in the fall while also flying two Atlas V missions, including the Boeing Starliner Crew Flight Test, all from Canaveral’s Space Launch Complex 41. The year also saw the final launch of ULA’s Delta IV Heavy rocket from Canaveral’s Space Launch Complex 37. Among the Space Coast launches were five human spaceflights carrying 16 people to space. Those include the Starliner flight from ULA to the International Space Station, and four launches of SpaceX’s Crew Dragon. SpaceX’s launches of the Crew-8 and Crew-9 missions as well as its flight for Axiom Space on the Ax-3 mission also went to the ISS. The Polaris Dawn mission took billionaire and the next nominee to head NASA, Jared Isaacman, and three others on an orbital mission that featured the first commercial space walk. One rocket that didn’t launch in 2024, but could still, is Blue Origin’s New Glenn, which had been trying to get its debut mission off the ground before the end of the year. The Federal Aviation Administration only gave Jeff Bezos’ company a launch license for the heavy-lift rocket on Friday, which was also when Blue Origin was able to finally perform a test hot fire of the rocket on the pad at Canaveral’s Space Launch Complex 36. The FAA has cleared the NG-1 Blue Ring Pathfinder mission for a launch window late Monday during a window from 11:30 p.m. into early Tuesday until 2:45 a.m. and a backup late New Year’s Eve into New Year’s Day during the same window. ©2024 Orlando Sentinel. The suspension, according to a statement by the commissioner came on the heels of a very disturbing video on the social media, where students of the institution were fed with unpalatable and innutrious meals. According to the commissioner, “I paid an unscheduled visit to the school, and I have directed a comprehensive investigation into the state of boarding facilities in the school and the other 25 boarding secondary schools across the state. “This review will focus on hostels, dining halls, recreation areas, menu, kitchen, and sanitary facilities and will be jointly overseen by the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministry of Education and the State Secondary Education Board”. Mrs. Etiebet noted that despite the fact that the free education policy of the state government, covers tuition fees only and not boarding fees, the welfare and dignity of all students, especially those in public schools, remain a priority of the Umo Eno-led administration. “We appeal to parents who have already been greatly relieved of the burden of tuition fees to undertake basic parental responsibilities to support their children in public secondary schools. “The Ministry is committed to ensuring that all public school facilities meet minimum standards that uphold the well-being of both learners and staff. “We urge the public to remain patient while this investigation lasts. The Governor, Pastor Umo Eno remains unwavering in his commitment to education, as outlined in the ARISE Agenda,” she maintained. Get real-time news updates from Tribune Online! BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Cam Carter hit five 3-pointers and finished with 23 points, Vyctorius Miller added 20 points and LSU never trailed Sunday night in a 110-45 win over Mississippi Valley State, the Tigers' 21st consecutive victory when scoring at least 100 points. LSU's 65-point margin of victory was its largest since the Tigers beat Grambling by 75 (112-37) on Nov. 20, 1999 and is the third biggest against a Division-I opponent in program history. The 110 points were the most by LSU since a 119-108 win over North Florida on Dec. 12, 2015. Carter scored 11 points — including three 3-pointers — in the first six minutes to make it 18-6 and LSU led by double figures the rest of the way. The Delta Devils went 0 for 6 from the field and committed five turnovers as LSU scored 17 consecutive points to take a 28-point lead with 7:44 left in the first half and led 55-13 at halftime. The Tigers allowed the seventh-fewest points in a half by an opponent in program history. Mississippi Valley State (2-11) is averaging 46.2 points and is winless with a scoring margin of minus-44.2 in 11 games against Division-I opponents this season. LSU (11-2) has won three games in a row since a 74-64 loss to SMU at the Compete 4 Cause Classic in Frisco, Texas, on Dec. 14. Jordan Spears and Daimion Collins added 15 points apiece for the Tigers, who shot 66% (46 of 70) from the field and made 12 3s. How co-writing a book threatened the Carters’ marriage
No. 22 St. John's, Georgia pack busy schedule with game on SundayActing President and Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok speaks during a National Security Council meeting at Government Complex in Seoul, Friday, following the National Assembly's impeachment of former acting President Han Duck-soo. Yonhap By Lee Yeon-woo Korea's bond market has remained stable, even in the aftermath of a brief imposition of martial law that rattled other exchanges, leading to a sharp weakening of the won against the U.S. dollar and increased volatility in the domestic stock market . However, with projections indicating an inevitable supplementary budget next year, concerns are growing over the potential spillover of economic uncertainties into the bond market. "Currently, the bond market's focus is on the supplementary budget," Eugene Securities analyst Kim Ji-na said. "Next year's supplementary budget is expected to further strain the supply of long-term bonds." The amount of government bond issuance anticipated next year already reached a record-high of 197.6 trillion won. In addition, the government plans to issue up to 20 trillion won in won-denominated foreign exchange stabilization bonds to bolster external credibility and stabilize the currency market. As a significant portion of the supplementary budget will be financed through government bond issuance, this additional supply is expected to place further pressure on the bond market. The increase in government bond issuance could drive up bond yields, raising borrowing costs for businesses and households in need of essential funds. Kim noted that while a supplementary budget itself is not unprecedented and would not surprise the market, the key issues are the amount and the timing of its implementation. "The upcoming supplementary budget could exceed 10 trillion won, driven by the political imperative of stabilizing livelihoods and the need to defend against economic growth falling below 1 percent. Depending on the next ruling party, it may not be limited to a single round," Kim said. Calls for a supplementary budget in 2025 gained momentum as the country's economy continues to struggle. Some indicators, including the won weakening to the 1,480 level against the dollar, are reminiscent of the global financial crisis of 2008. The finance ministry is projecting just 1 percent economic growth next year. The finance ministry has officially opposed a supplementary budget, citing concerns over fiscal sustainability. Instead, it plans to front-load 75 percent of the total budget , or 431 trillion won, in the first half of next year. "I agree with the perception that the government needs to take an active role given the struggles of the public and uncertainties both at home and abroad," acting President and Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok said at a press meeting, Dec. 23. "However, the current budget must be executed first, so I will prioritize its execution ." Many experts believe a super supplementary budget worth tens of trillions of won will ultimately be implemented to support the sluggish economy. "Given the domestic economic uncertainties and external tariff risks, a supplementary budget amounting to 1.1 percent of gross domestic product will be necessary to ease fiscal shortages in 2025," Citi Korea Chief Economist Kim Jin-wook said. "We expect 10 to 15 trillion won to be allocated in the first quarter of next year, with an additional 15 to 20 trillion won following a presidential election in the second half of next year."
