Though this is not the state’s largest contingent, what lies ahead for Baton Rouge teams in the LHSAA’s football quarterfinal round is eye-catching. You’ve got shadows from playoff seasons past, one all-local game and some impressive first-time matchups. Here are some observations about the games involving BR's nine teams that advanced with regional wins either Thursday or Friday. Pick a game and make plans buy tickets now. New foe for Rebels Seems like somebody from Baton Rouge always ends up playing West Monroe in the post season. Zachary has played the Rebels multiple times, including a 2018 title game. Catholic High, too, over the years. Now it’s Central’s turn, but there is a twist. The fourth-seeded Wildcats (10-1) have the upper hand in seeding. West Monroe (7-5), a No. 21 seed, has taken a few lumps this season and travels to Central. Which adds to the intrigue. We meet again I Fourth-seeded Catholic (10-0) and No. 5 Rummel (9-2) have met plenty of times in the postseason. One I remember is the 2019 Division I final played at Tulane. The Raiders beat the Bears 14-10 in that one. Last year they met in the semifinals. Both teams have claimed LHSAA titles in recent years but the route to the Caesars Superdome is different this time. It’s the quarterfinals this time and the winner will likely match up with top-seeded Karr in the semifinals. Should be a great test for both teams. We meet again II Kentwood and Southern Lab have been Class 1A rivals and district rivals for a long time. The 12th-seeded Kangaroos lost to Southern Lab 13-8 in Baton Rouge in District 9-1A action back in Week 8. The No. 13 Kittens are the defending Division IV select champions. This is Kentwood’s first year as a select school. And this game will be played in Kentwood. It’s 70805 time Two north Baton Rouge teams from the same zip code, No. 13 Istrouma (9-3) and No. 5 Madison Prep (8-3), meet in a Division II select game at Olympia Stadium. This is the first time the football teams have met on the varsity level. Madison Prep is a Class 4A team, while MPA is 3A. So there is not much common ground. One thing both teams have is a playmaker at running back. Istrouma’s Kyree Paul ran 120 yards and two touchdowns in Thursday’s win over Haynes Academy. Madison Prep’s Alfred McKnight rushed for 180 yards and two TDs. We needed this I’ve mentioned rivalries or matchups we never knew we needed or wanted. It applies again this week with The Dunham School (11-0), the top seed in Division III select, hosting No. 9 Lafayette Christian (6-6). Most recently, Lafayette Christian flexed its muscles in Class 4A and Division II. Like West Monroe, LCA has taken some lumps this season. LCA graduated record-setting QB JuJuan Johnson, who is now at LSU playing another position. Dunham has the nation’s No. 1 2027 prospect in its QB Elijan Haven. The same is true for No. 7 Riverside (9-2) at second-seeded Ascension Catholic in Division IV select. Both teams have dynamic running backs — Dedric Lastie for Riverside and ACHS’ Chad Elzy Jr. And ditto that for Division II nonselect Opelousas and Plaquemine. The sixth-seeded Green Devils (11-1) have Tyrese Mosby, while No. 14 Opelousas (8-3) counters with D’Shaun Ford, who has multiple Power 5 offers. Finally, top-seeded St. James (8-2) hosts No. 9 Pine (9-3) in Division III nonselect. Not much common ground here, so it will be uncharted territory for SJHS.

Nielsen will measure the ratings for the Christmas Day games, with early numbers expected late afternoon on Thursday. When could there be surge in demand on Wednesday? It will probably be at kickoff for both games, but especially around 5:45 p.m. EST. That would be near halftime of the Ravens-Texans game, and when Beyoncé will be performing. What other celebrities will appear? Mariah Carey will kick off the day with a taped performance of "All I Want for Christmas is You." There is no word if Taylor Swift will make the trip to Pittsburgh to watch her boyfriend, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. The NFL will have at least two games on Dec. 25 in 2025 and '26, with Netflix slated to have at least one each year. Amazon Prime Video will have a night game with Christmas on a Thursday next year. Jolene Arreak died at a Hintonburg residence on Spadina Avenue on Christmas Day. Arreak is just the latest family member that was the victim of a homicide after her sister, Vivian Sula Enuaraq, and two nieces died in an apparent murder-suicide in Iqaluit almost 15 years ago. Activate your Online Access Now Article content In June 2011, Police found Enuaraq and her two daughters, seven-year-old Alexandra Degrasse, and two-year-old Aliyah Degrasse dead inside their family home, after they discovered Enuaraq’s common-law husband dead at an Iqaluit cemetery, lying next to a rifle. “I wish I could afford to go where Jolene’s mom lives because I would go be with her,” said Susan Martin a family friend of the Arreaks for more than a decade who lives in Calgary. In events that likely feel all too familiar for the family, Ottawa police are investigating the homicide of Arreak, who was 46 years old. The homicide broke the city’s yearly total record of 24 set in 1995 and 2016. Another victim survived the Christmas Day attack and was treated in hospital before being released, according to police. Neighbours have identified that man as Arreak’s uncle, J.P. Foo. Police said they arrested a 35-year-old man named Manasi Foo and charged him with second-degree murder. He was also charged with attempted murder. He appeared in court on Boxing Day and was held in custody, according to police. Audrey Redman hosted a Christmas Dinner that Arreak had planned to attend. Article content “We’re really gonna miss her,” said Redman, adding that Arreak “had no fear” and was very trusting. “It breaks all our hearts.” Neecha Dupuis, another friend, said she was supposed to pick Arreak up to bring her to Redman’s for dinner, but didn’t when she didn’t hear from her. “I probably would have walked into all of that, it would have been horrible for me and a lot of our friends, but I was shielded from all that, I guess. I wasn’t meant to go that way,” Dupuis said. “There’s so many people in Ottawa that are so upset right now.” Friends remembered Arreak as a happy, friendly and spiritual person, who was always willing to help. “Jolene is really special,” said Redman, who is a residential school survivor and whose sister was murdered in Vancouver. “Such a sweet girl, I’ve never really met anybody like her.” Redman said she called Arreak a “firefly” because “she was so bright and she always just got so much light to everywhere she went.” Martin said Arreak was “a beautiful person” who “had a good heart and a good spirit.” “Whether she knew you or not and you needed a hug, she gave you a hug. The death of Arreak’s aunt, Deborah Evaluarjuk, was documented in the inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in 2018. Redman said the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls is “a reoccurring problem.” “Our people, especially our women, are put in these situations where they end up being the ones that are the victims of it all,” Redman said. “I think every First Nations family across Canada, I’m sure each one of us, of all of our families, we’ve lost people that way, murder or suicide or missing.” With Postmedia files. Instead, it was rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels engineering a 57-yard drive and finding Jamison Crowder in the end zone with six seconds left on the clock to beat Philadelphia and get the Commanders to 10-5. “Just a regular Sunday afternoon again,” coach Dan Quinn said moments later. Quinn's team is now on the verge of making the playoffs after again showing its mettle in wacky, back-and-forth games with wild finishes. Playing in and winning those has sort of become Washington's calling card. “We didn’t flinch at all,” receiver Terry McLaurin said. “We didn’t panic. Not to say we did that in the past, but it was like, we’ve been here before. When you've been through something, you know what it looks like. You know what it feels like.
