Best Buy and Target have Tears of the Kingdom's physical edition for only $40 , saving you $30. Tears of the Kingdom is part of Nintendo's official Black Friday lineup, but the expectation was that it would cost $50. Like many Nintendo games, Tears of the Kingdom is rarely marked down, so we wouldn't be surprised if retailers sold out before Black Friday sales end. Especially because it will be a popular choice for holiday shoppers who pick up a Switch console bundle for the ridiculously low price of $225 . The extra $10 off is a nice surprise, though you could possibly save even more. Walmart will have Tears of the Kingdom for $30 tomorrow, November 25, at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET. The deal coincides with the launch of Walmart's Black Friday week deals . The catch here is that the offer is exclusive to paid Walmart+ subscribers until 2 PM PT / 5 PM ET. There's a very good chance it sells out before the deal opens up to everyone, but if you have a subscription already, make sure to check Walmart's listing when the sale begins to snag a copy. It's worth noting Walmart+ is only $49/year right now thanks to a 50%-off promotion. Along with early access to sales events, subscribers get free two-day shipping on orders placed online, same-day delivery from your local store, a Paramount+ subscription, and other nice perks. Note: Target is offering an additional $5 discount on some of the official Black Friday Switch game deals. Alicia Ojeda and her young daughter sat in the giant Ticket Concourse hall in Union Station with hundreds of others, anxiously awaiting the start of the holiday festivities on Monday night, Nov. 25. The mother and daughter came from South Los Angeles to see Santa switch on the 30-foot Christmas tree, listen to music from Los Rebeldes Romanticos, and sip hot chocolate in the historic train station’s north patio, said Ojeda. Her daughter, however, was wishing for something else. “Cats,” said Anastasia, twice. “Cats.” To which her mother quickly answered: “Oh, she just loves cats.” An angel lights up the main ticket area at Union Station at the Christmas Tree lighting ceremony on Monday, Nov. 25, 2024. (Photo by David Crane, Los Angeles Daily News/SCNG) Well, the night may have disappointed Anastasia, but the crowd seemed to enjoy the 9th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony put on by Metro Arts and LA Metro. There were no cats, per se, but there were fairies and angels adorned with electric white lights swirling their wings, and golden stars dancing in the moonlit patio — both performed on stilts — who stirred the imagination of tiny tots with eyes all aglow. Two elves in green were dwarfed by a large pot-bellied Santa in a red suit who wondered how the tree would light just by the touch of a wireless button on stage. “I don’t see any cables. Do you think it will work?” he mused, then touched the button and added golden, twinkling lights to the tree, sending oohs from the patient crowd. LA Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggins and Whittier City Councilmember and Metro vice chair Fernando Dutra greeted the large crowd and helped with the tree-lighting. After getting a hug from St. Nick, Wiggins thanked him for her greatest gift so far this season. “I’ve been on the good list, Santa, all year long. We now have 1 million people riding Metro every day,” she announced. She was referring to September and October ridership on the vast Metro system surpassing the one million mark for the first time since before the pandemic, with average weekday ridership at 1,025,262 in October, the latest figures available. The standing-only crowd craned their necks to see the band, who revived the Los Angeles Bolero movement with their melodic Latin American ballads and cumbias. In between, they snuck in some Christmas classics singing in English, “Let It Snow,” a wish that, well, wasn’t happening in balmy Los Angeles. Even the clouds had parted outside, chasing away intermittent rain sprinkles. Can Los Angeles properly celebrate the holidays without snow, weather that’s frightful, or chestnuts roasting on an open fire? Just ask Yolanda McClamb, who came from Culver City riding the Metro E Line train to attend her first-ever holiday celebration in Union Station. “There are many events across Los Angeles that have that kind of holiday spirit,” McClamb said. She has attended other shows in the 1939 building, celebrating its 85th year anniversary. Union Station serves Metro’s A, B and D lines and a fleet of Metrolink and Amtrak trains, and a bus plaza, where folks can get across the city and to and from LAX. Many parents and children waited in long lines to greet Santa and have their pictures taken. Just before the event, those exiting the A Line train received free tamales from a vendor, as part of the festival. McClamb mentioned other events she’s experienced at Union Station, including the model train show and a video game extravaganza event in the recent past. But on Monday night, she discovered a new band and Boleros music. And she drew hope and encouragement from the crowd to begin the holiday season. “We just love the spirit, the camaraderie and the amazing music selection,” she said. Dutra expressed a wish of togetherness for the season during this difficult political season for many in Southern California. “I want Angelenos to have a happy, safe Christmas. I want everyone to come together, put politics aside and focus on the reason why we are here for the Christmas season,” he said in an interview after the tree lighting. Los Angeles Conservancy will be conducting 90-minute “Holidays at Union Station” tours on Dec. 5, 12 and 19 starting at 5:30 p.m. The guided tours will take visitors through the historic station at night highlighting the holiday décor. Oliver Glasner: Crystal Palace are heading in right direction after Ipswich winIn a clash that could affect the race for the title and promotion, Sunderland are set to host West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday at the Stadium of Light in their 17th Championship fixture of the campaign. The hosts are second in the table with 32 points and drew 1-1 draw with Millwall on Saturday, while the visitors are sixth with 26 points after 16 games and drew 2-2 with Norwich City on November 23. Sunderland are currently level on points with first-placed Leeds, and though both sides have conceded just 12 times, the Black Cats' tally of 26 goals scored is two fewer than the league leaders. These returns mean that Tuesday's hosts rank as the division's third best offensive and joint fourth best defensive team. The Black Cats controlled the first half against Millwall, taking the lead after 10 minutes while limiting their opponents to just one shot, but they eventually succumbed to the Lions in the second half when they conceded a 93rd-minute equaliser. Manager Regis Le Bris suggested that his side would have taken three points against Millwall had the team used the ball better, telling reporters: ""We won the first contacts often and after the second ball, we often were not able to keep the ball when it was possible. We had a big space to exploit, as was the case just before the equaliser." Le Bris's players have not experienced defeat in their last nine games, but they have failed to achieve victory in any of their past four matches. Sunderland have also drawn two of their three most recent fixtures at the Stadium of Light, though they are unbeaten in their seven home games this term, winning five. Opponents West Brom produced double Norwich's total of 11 shots, though both teams had an equal share of possession and created two big chances. Manager Carlos Corberan said that he believed his team edged proceedings, but noted his displeasure with his side's defensive display, saying: "The team has taken a positive step in attack but at the same time we have suffered more chances and goals than we want to suffer in the first half." The Baggies occupy the final promotion playoff spot in the Championship thanks to having better goal difference than seventh-placed Watford. Interestingly, while West Brom's return of 18 goals scored is the worst among the sides in the top 13, their record of 11 goals conceded is only bettered by third-placed Sheffield United and fourth-placed Burnley. Corberan will be alarmed by the Baggies' form, as while they have not lost in eight games, they failed to score on four occasions in that period, drawing seven times. West Brom have also only won once in their five most recent away outings, losing once and being held to a stalemate three times. The hosts will be unable to call upon forwards Ahmed Abdullahi and Ian Poveda , while Aaron Connolly is a doubt due to a knock. In their absence, Eliezer Mayenda , Milan Aleksic and Tom Watson could start behind striker Wilson Isidor . Sunderland are also set to be without defenders Jenson Seelt and Niall Huggins , as well as midfielder Salis Abdul Samed , so expect to see a backline consisting of Luke O'Nien , Chris Mepham , Daniel Ballard and Ajibola-Joshua Alese . However, Jobe Bellingham is set to return after serving the last of his three-match suspension against Millwall, and he will almost certainly partner Dan Neil in a double pivot. West Brom will have to cope with the absence of right-back Darnell Furlong , who is suspended as a result of accumulating too many yellow cards, and he may be replaced by Reece Hall . Centre-backs Kyle Bartley , Patrick McNair and Semi Ajayi are unlikely to appear again until early December, and perhaps the away side will deploy Mason Holgate and Torbjorn Heggem in the heart of defence. Striker Daryl Dike has also been ruled out until the middle of next month, and this could mean Karlan Grant and Josh Maja continue to lead the forward line. Sunderland possible starting lineup: Patterson; O'Nien, Mepham, Ballard, Alese; Bellingham, Neil; Mayenda, Aleksic, Watson; Isidor West Bromwich Albion possible starting lineup: Palmer; Hall, Holgate, Heggem, Styles; Fellows, Molumby, Mowatt, Johnston; Maja, Grant Despite West Brom scoring twice last time out, they have found difficulties in front of goal recently and it would not be surprising if they failed to score once again. However, Sunderland have struggled for victories in the past weeks and though the hosts will no doubt be buoyed by their home crowd, Tuesday's clash will likely be a close affair. French President Emmanuel Macron named a new government Monday evening, putting together a team under Francois Bayrou, his fourth prime minister of the year, to drag the second-largest EU economy out of political crisis. Macron named former prime minister Elisabeth Borne, 63, education minister in a new cabinet under centrist Bayrou, announced Elysee secretary-general Alexis Kohler. Another former premier, Manuel Valls, 62, returned as overseas territories minister, while former interior minister Gerald Darmanin became justice minister. Both Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu and Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot kept their jobs, the presidency said. Lecornu, a 38-year-old loyalist with a keen political nose, has served in every government since Macron's first election as president in 2017. Conservative Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, who has vowed to crack down on illegal immigration, and right-wing Culture Minister Rachida Dati, also stayed in their posts. The difficult job of delivering a budget plan for next year falls to Eric Lombard, head of public-sector lender Caisse des Depots (CDC), who was named economy minister. "I'm very proud of the team we're presenting this evening," Bayrou said on X, adding his "experienced" cabinet would aim to "rebuild trust". The inclusion of two former prime ministers indicates Macron's desire for a heavyweight government that will enjoy stability and not share the fate of Bayrou's predecessor, Michel Barnier, ousted in a no-confidence vote. Bayrou had hoped to bring in figures from the left, right and centre to protect his government from possible censure, but his 35-member team does not include any members of the left-wing coalition New Popular Front. Macron will assemble Bayrou's team on January 3 for a first Council of Ministers meeting, the presidency said. Barnier was brought down over his failure to win support for an austerity budget to shore up France's shaky finances with spending cuts and tax rises. The priority for 73-year-old Bayrou is to make sure his government can survive a no-confidence vote and that it passes a cost-cutting budget for 2025. The unexpected comeback of Valls, premier from 2014 to 2016, as the head of the overseas territories ministry indicates the importance of the post after authorities were strongly criticised for their response to the deadly cyclone on the Indian Ocean territory of Mayotte, which killed at least 35 people. Darmanin had long been known to covet the post of foreign minister, but after days of intense discussions will have to content himself with the justice ministry. Just before the official announcement, heavyweight right-wing politician Xavier Bertrand, who had been tipped for the health ministry, announced he would not be part of the government. He alleged that it had been formed with the implicit "backing" of far-right leader Marine Le Pen, who will play a key role in ensuring its survival. "The prime minister informed me this morning, contrary to what he had proposed yesterday, that he was no longer in a position to entrust me with responsibility for the justice ministry due to opposition from (Le Pen's) National Rally," Bertrand said in a statement. "Despite his new proposals, I refuse to take part in a government of France formed with the backing of Marine Le Pen." Bertrand is a major irritant for the far right, which he has long opposed. Le Pen on March 31, 2025 faces the verdict in an embezzlement trial on charges she denies. If convicted, she could lose the chance of standing in the 2027 elections and with it her best chance yet of winning the presidency. The announcement came as France observed a day of mourning for victims in cyclone-hit Mayotte, France's poorest overseas territory. Bayrou, the head of the centrist MoDem group, which is allied to Macron's party, was appointed on December 13. He is the sixth prime minister of Macron's mandate. Many already predict Bayrou will struggle to survive. France has been mired in deadlock since Macron gambled on snap elections this summer in the hopes of bolstering his authority. The move backfired, with voters electing a parliament fractured between three rival blocs. Le Pen suggested Macron has been weakened by months of political crisis and would eventually have to resign. "I am preparing for an early presidential election," she told French newspaper Le Parisien last week. bur-as/jhbElisabeth Borne, only the second woman to serve as French prime minister, is making a surprise return to frontline politics as education minister less than a year after losing a job that she never wished to relinquish. An experienced technocrat known for her resilience who pushed through a controversial pensions overhaul while in office, Borne served as premier from May 2022 to January 2024. The 63-year-old engineer was the first woman to head a French government in three decades after the brief stint in office of Edith Cresson who lasted under 11 months in the early 1990s, during which time she endured rampant sexism. When Borne took power, she dedicated the moment to "all the little girls". "Follow your dreams, nothing must slow the fight for women's place in our society," she said. But her departure after just over 18 months left her denouncing the "insidious sexism" that she said still permeated French politics. At President Emmanuel Macron's request, she resigned in January and was replaced by the then 34-year-old Gabriel Attal, who became France's youngest head of government but he only lasted to the summer. Borne said after her resignation that women in politics were "constantly" compared to men. "Men in politics, they all have an interest in imposing masculine codes, it eliminates the competition," she added. She also noted that all candidates to succeed her were men. "It's as if commentators were saying to themselves, 'We've just had a woman prime minister for 20 months, that's it, we're back to normal life'," she told RTL. Even when she handed over office to Attal on January 9, Borne had made clear her resentment over sexism in French politics, saying: "I have also been able to see quite often that there is still some way to go for equality between women and men." But she added in a message to women: "Hold on, the future belongs to you." More from this section Borne had proved her loyalty to Macron during his first term in office, serving as transport, environment and finally labour minister from 2020. As premier she staunchly defended his flagship pensions reform to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64. She deployed a controversial executive power to force through the legislation without a vote, despite previously saying she did not want to use it. Discreet about her private life, Borne was accused by critics of showing too little personality in office. Borne's Jewish father had been deported to Auschwitz during World War II and survived the Nazi death camp but never fully recovered. Her father took his own life when she was just 11 years old. "It's shocking for an 11-year-old girl to lose her father in these conditions," Borne told LCI. "And I think I closed up and that I avoid showing my emotions too much." "I think... this closing up, maybe, goes a little far. Yes," she acknowledged. But she expressed pride over how France had allowed her to study under a special programme for children who have lost parents. "We are a country where you can be the daughter of an immigrant, where you may have lost your father at 11, but the country reaches out to you to allow you to study," she said. "And then you are a prefect (senior local official), and then you are a minister and you are even prime minister," she added. Her father, who was reportedly named Joseph Bornstein, fled to France from Poland in 1940 and then fought in the French resistance during World War II. He was captured and deported to Auschwitz in 1944. bur-sjw/as/phz
NFL The NFL issued a security alert to teams and the players’ union on Thursday following recent burglaries involving the homes of Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. In a memo obtained by The Associated Press, the league says homes of professional athletes across multiple sports have become “increasingly targeted for burglaries by organized and skilled groups.” Law enforcement officials noted these groups target the homes on days the athletes have games. Players were told to take precautions and implement home security measures to reduce the risk of being targeted. Some of the burglary groups have conducted extensive surveillance on targets, including attempted home deliveries and posing as grounds maintenance or joggers in the neighborhood. Burglars have entered through side doors, via balconies, or second-floor windows. They’ve targeted homes in secluded areas and focus on master bedrooms and closet areas. Players were warned to avoid updating any social media with check-ins or daily activities until the end of the day. Posting expensive items on social media is discouraged. COLLEGE FOOTBALL Highly touted high school quarterback Julian Lewis committed to the University of Colorado, possibly an indicator that coach Deion Sanders does indeed plan to stick around in Boulder. The five-star recruit recently decommitted from Southern Cal to explore his options. He announced Colorado would be his destination Thursday on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” as he donned a Buffaloes stocking cap. Lewis figures to be the heir apparent to Shedeur Sanders, who’s expected to be a top pick in the next NFL draft. It gives Deion Sanders another elite quarterback to build around at Colorado. On Tuesday, Sanders tamped down speculation over his future. “I’m enthusiastic about where I am,” he said. “I love it here.
