(AP) — Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said he was caught off guard by reports early Tuesday that linebacker Shaq Barrett wants to unretire. The two-time Super Bowl winner signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins in March, then abruptly announced his retirement on social media in July, just days before the start of Miami's training camp. “Just to be candid, obviously there's a reason why you target and sign somebody," McDaniel said Tuesday afternoon. “I was fully caught off guard, or caught by surprise this morning as I found out.” McDaniel indicated the Dolphins have not had any conversations with Barrett recently. Miami holds the 32-year-old’s contractual rights. ESPN first reported the news. “It was kind of news as you guys got it,” McDaniel said. He also said he hasn't had a chance to think about Barrett potentially rejoining the team, and that his immediate focus is on Miami's Thursday night game at Green Bay. “The team is counting on me to think about the Packers,” he said. "I'll get with (GM) Chris (Grier), and we'll work through that. There's a ton of implications that go along with it in terms of team and roster stuff, so we'll work through that as we just got the news today.” Barrett has 400 tackles, 59 sacks, 22 forced fumbles and three interceptions in nine seasons — four with Denver and five with Tampa Bay. He was a second-team All-Pro with the Buccaneers in 2019, with a league-high 19 1/2 sacks. The Dolphins waived veteran safety Marcus Maye on Tuesday and activated rookie safety Patrick McMorris from injured reserve. Maye, who signed with the Dolphins in June, played in 11 games with three starts for Miami this season. He had 30 tackles and a tackle for loss. He could re-sign to the team's practice squad if he clears waivers. Maye previously played for New Orleans, but was cut in a money-saving move in March after two seasons with the Saints. Maye's release made room on the roster for McMorris, who was drafted in the sixth round by Miami in April. He began the season on injured reserve because of a calf injury. Eric on Edmonton Sports Talk Radio about the biggest trade need of the Edmonton Oilers , which Dreger suggested is bringing in help on defence: “We’re going to be talking for a long time — until or unless management does something — about that defence. It does seem like that’s the deepest and darkest area of concern from a defensive and an offensive perspective. It’s pretty obvious. It’s basic hockey. If you don’t get the puck out of your own end, or you can’t transport the puck, into the hands of McDavid and Draisaitl, and go down the list of all the offensive weapons they have, that’s going to be a problem. And it has been. It’s what I think has put this team in a place of wild inconsistency. Dreger said that the Vancouver Canucks acquired Nikita Zadorov near the end of November last year, and that some teams can get decent pieces early. “Let’s see if Edmonton fits into that category. There’s no panic in Edmonton. Nor should there be. But there is concern when it comes to the consistency of this team... I paused for a bit because I wanted to use the ‘dysfunction’ word, and I think that applies as well when I look at their overall game and their lack of consistency.” My take 1. I’m not sure what Edmonton’s biggest need is, but I am sure that Edmonton needs to be careful before it spends assets to fill any one hole. Edmonton doesn’t have a lot in the way of assets, having traded away its first round pick in June 2025 draft and being mighty short on cap space as well. It strikes me that the Oilers will be able to fire just one big bullet this year to bring in a player. Until GM Stan Bowman is sure what the biggest hole is, best not fire off that special bullet, correct? Patience is in order. 2. I’m certainly not sure where the OIlers greatest area of need is. Are you sure? Is Oilers management? Is it in net, where Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard have yet to remind anyone of a fully competent NHL goaltending partnership? Is it on defence, where there’s clearly a hole, but we can’t be sure yet if it’s on the second pairing or the third pairing. If Brett Kulak and Darnell Nurse can get it done and done well on the second-pairing, then Edmonton doesn’t have to trade for a second pairing d-man at huge cost, it just needs to bring in a third-pairing guy to help out Ty Emberson and Troy Stecher. Or is the biggest need on the wing, where the group is underperforming significantly compared to last year? Maybe a big, tough and fast third-line winger will turn out to be the biggest need. Such a player won’t come cheap, correct? 3. The best bet for the Oilers? Hey, if there’s a Zadorov deal out there, Edmonton should make that happen. That would certainly scratch an itch. Vancouver took Calgary to the cleaners on that one, giving up just a third and a fifth round pick. Is it just me, or did that trade have “Screw the Oilers!” written all over it, with Calgary buttressing a major divisional rival? I’m 83 per cent sure I’m just being paranoid and Oilers-centric there. But the best bet is to wait and see, build up cap space, see what happens on the injury and performance front, then pounce on a deal that fills that need. Make sense? The opening season of the San Pedro Volleyball Indoor Tournament will conclude this Sunday, December 8th, at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium. The final rounds of matches will feature teams competing in the Junior category, followed by COED, and finishing with the Senior divisions. The games will start promptly at 4PM. In the second round of the semi-final matches held on December 1st, the Jr. Female division featured a matchup between Isla Bonita Girls and Island Academy Girls. In the Male division of the same category, the Island Boyz faced off against ACES Boys. In the COED division, the Warriors competed against SPHS, followed by a match between Barbos and SPHS Sharks in the Seniors category. The results of the final games will feature ten teams competing for the championship in their respective categories. In the Jr. Female division, the Island Academy Girls will face the SPHS Jr. Sharks. In the Male category, Rompe Pechitos will take on the Island Boyz. In the COED division, the championship will be contested between the WD 20s and the Warriors. In the Seniors category, SPHS will compete against Wildsets in the female group, while in the male division, the Barbos will aim to win the championship by defeating the Vikings. Erick Santizo, the organizer, President of the San Pedro Volleyball Association , and Sports Coordinator at San Pedro High School (SPHS), is excited about the upcoming volleyball final. This marks the eighth year of organizing the tournament, and he extends his gratitude to all the teams and supporters for their participation in another year of competitions.
