Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum speaks on the day of the 114th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution in Mexico City, Mexico, on Nov. 20. Raquel Cunha/Reuters Robin Shaban is associate partner at Deetken Insight and fellow at the Public Policy Forum and Social Capital Partners. Saúl Sandoval Perea is professor of politics and economics at CETYS Universidad in Tijuana, Mexico. This year has been historic for Mexico. The country elected its first female president and undertook a major overhaul of its judicial system. Moreover, the government is on the verge of fundamentally reforming – and in some instances eliminating – several independent regulatory agencies. These populist changes could have a substantial effect on Canadian investors and other business interests in Mexico. They may also foreshadow populist trends within our own Canadian borders that businesses and investors will need to face. In a radical shift, Mexico’s recent judicial reform opens the selection process for some 7,000 judges and other justice positions – including Supreme Court justices – to citizens through popular vote. Domestic and international investors are increasingly wary of these changes, fearing heightened politicization, diminished independence of the judicial system and a less secure investment environment. On top of these changes, the government is also aiming to drastically reform various regulatory institutions that oversee competition law enforcement, government transparency, energy and telecommunications. Their functions and responsibilities would be transferred to a few federal ministries, ostensibly to save money for social programs and pensions. To appease investors and critics, and to comply with USMCA provisions, the ruling party and the federal government have pledged to make the competition, energy and telecommunications commissions decentralized agencies with technical independence and their own resources. However, they would still lack the authority to set their own budgets. These changes have been developing for years and this trajectory is unlikely to change any time soon. Left-wing former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador began calling for a judicial overhaul last year after frequent clashes with the country’s Supreme Court. He described Mexico’s regulatory agencies as “ wasteful ” and in service of business interests rather than the people. López Obrador didn’t have the votes in Congress to make the judicial and regulatory changes he envisioned. But that situation changed this past summer when his party and its allies secured a supermajority in both legislative chambers. Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s newly inaugurated president and López Obrador’s political protégé, will now lead the charge on dismantling regulatory agencies and realizing López Obrador’s vision. Not surprisingly, these judicial and regulatory reforms may challenge Mexico’s free-trade agreement with Canada and the U.S. Changes to Mexico’s regulators, namely its competition authority, also run counter to best practices outlined by the OECD by making agencies open to political influence. The Mexican government has sent very strong signals that it will not be deterred by Canada or the U.S. from pursuing these profound changes, going so far as to freeze communications with both U.S. and Canadian embassies. Even if officials in Canada were able to somehow curb the reforms Mexico is pursuing, there is little they can do to address the root issue – a deterioration in the population’s trust in conventionally accepted economic policy and regulation. However, with the election of Donald Trump and his vow of substantial tariffs, leaders in Canada and Mexico have been stressing the need for more communication and collaboration. The very fact that the current government believes that courts and regulators are failing to create outcomes that benefit Mexicans is troubling. The drastic reforms being pursued by the government reflect the strength of this conviction. This crisis of faith in government legitimacy isn’t unique to Mexico, as the United States’ election of Mr. Trump shows. Even in Canada, populist trends are shaping economic policy, such as the coming two-month GST break on certain items and promised $250 rebate cheques. Canadian businesses and investors need to adjust to this new populist reality to successfully navigate the inevitable political shifts happening in both Mexico and here in Canada. Regulators may not outright abandon the highly technical and dispassionate ways they evaluate business investments and strategies. However, they may choose to closely scrutinize businesses they may have previously ignored if they perceive potential harm to the broader public, whether real or imagined. To navigate this new landscape, businesses and investors must consider the optics of their activities more carefully. They will also need to find ways to clearly and credibly articulate how they are creating real value for individuals and their families, not just top-line GDP. The unfolding populist wave in Mexico serves as a stark reminder for Canadian businesses: The rules of engagement in global markets are shifting. This isn’t just about trade agreements or regulatory frameworks; it’s about grappling with a deeper, more pervasive challenge – restoring public trust in institutions that underpin economic systems. The question is not whether this populist momentum will influence Canada’s economic and regulatory environment, but how prepared we are to respond when it does.

I'm not sure there is another team in the NFL that needs a bye week as badly as the Houston Texans do. Luckily for them, they have one coming up after their next game with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Now, that's not the reason they lost to the Tennessee Titans, but it certainly isn't helping. Against the Titans, they were already without a few key players. Of course, another injury happened during the game, giving the Texans some more bad news to report. Last week, before their game against the Dallas Cowboys , the Texans called up practice squad cornerback Ka'dar Hollman to help their depth. He became CB2 on the day. And, he played pretty well in that game. On Sunday against the Titans, he got hurt. #Texans CB Ka'dar Hollman tore his ACL on Sunday and will miss the remainder of the season. Per @AaronWilson_NFL Prayers up. pic.twitter.com/DTKr9SNBJK According to Texans insider Aaron Wilson, Hollman will miss the remainder of the 2024 season. The Texans will either call up more cornerbacks from the practice squad, or they will go out and sign one. There are some good ones out there in the free agent market, too, so we will just have to wait and see what general manager Nick Caserio does. The Jacksonville Jaguars have some good receivers, despite Christian Kirk being out. So, they will need the help in the secondary, especially now that Jalen Pitre is out, too, with a pretty big pec injury that could keep him out for some time. And while Pitre is a safety, he had been playing a lot of nickel, and he'd been playing well there, too. After the game against the Jags, the Texans have a bye week, and then their final stretch is tough against the Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs , and the Baltimore Ravens before they play the Tennessee Titans again. Cerity Partners LLC Purchases 133,810 Shares of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NYSE:NCLH)Lithium-ion batteries have served us well, powering much of the modern world. However, today’s tech — everything from drones and EVs to the wretched Tesla cyber truck — demands denser batteries that charge faster and take you further. This push is driving scientists to conjure up new battery chemistries or refine old ones. Naturally, it is also spawning a new generation of startups looking to scale the next, best battery. One of those is Molyon. Molyon recently emerged from 15 years of research at the University of Cambridge to commercialise a lithium-sulfur battery that it claims delivers twice the energy density of lithium-ion. Today, the startup secured $4.6mn to kickstart manufacturing at its first pilot facility. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries not only store much more energy than lithium-ion, but they also don’t rely on rare minerals like cobalt, nickel, and graphite. They could help technologies like electric vehicles, drones, and planes become far more efficient. Webinar: Unicorn DNA: The Blueprint for Scaling Success What does it take to build a unicorn? Top executives of unicorn companies reveal the mindset, strategies, and innovative thinking that propelled their companies to the top. However, to date, Li-S batteries have yet to be commercialised because of one big problem. Sulfur from the battery’s cathode tends to dissolve into the electrolyte – causing the anode to corrode and the battery to fail after only a few cycles. “The promise of lithium-sulfur batteries has been there for decades but until now it has not been possible to realise this potential because of the inherent chemistry challenges of working with sulfur,” explained Dr Ismail Sami, co-founder and CEO of Molyon. To overcome this problem, Molyon has developed a cathode technology based on metallic molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), a compound made up of sulfur and molybdenum, an abundant element found in the Earth’s crust. MoS2 remains stable and provides high energy density over hundreds of cycles – potentially revolutionising the Li-S battery field. Sami co-founded Molyon in February of this year alongside his lab partner Dr Zhuangnan Li, who acts as the company’s CTO. The pair met whilst studying under the third co-founder Professor Manish Chhowalla. A fourth co-founder, Dr Sai Shivareddy (co-founder of Nyobolt ) is a commercial advisor to the company. Since patenting the discovery, the team has demonstrated practical batteries with energy densities of 500Wh per kg – approximately twice that of the typical Li-ion battery. Fuelled by fresh funding, Molyon will expand its team and work on its pilot facility. It will initially focus on making Li-S batteries for drones and robots, which could greatly benefit from the lighter weight and improved range. After that, the company plans to scale to electric cars, trucks, and planes. Molyon’s funding round — its first ever — was co-led by London-based deep tech investors IQ Capital and founder-led VC Plural, which launched a €400mn fund back in January. “ The UK is uniquely positioned to lead in lithium-sulfur technology,” wrote Carina Namih, partner at Plural, in a blog post . “ We are already one of the world-leading innovators in this emerging field, with the top labs and researchers based here. “The UK also has the talent base and scar tissue from earlier failed attempts to commercialize this technology — as is so often the case with technological progress, the lessons learnt from these failures will feed the second wave.”IWV Burros Youth Football Varsity finished the regular season 7-1, Junior Varsity 5-3, Sophomore 6-1, and Freshman 5-1. Rallying back late in both games to come out on top. By far some of the best football I have ever seen and coached. These players had no quit in them always working hard each week trying to get ready for each opponent. Biggest thing I would like to say is the team’s ability to overcome adversity and how they dealt with it towards the end of the season. They never panicked handled themselves very maturely and professional. We had some major obstacles to overcome and they banded together as a team to figure out how to keep pushing. The team improved each and every week leading into playoffs. We played some of our best football in the post season play. When the opportunity presented itself, the kids really stepped up and performed. The Gunners have proved reports of their demise have been exaggerated after three thumping wins in the space of a week. They then put in another five-star display in a breathless encounter – or first half at least – at the London Stadium. Advertisement Just as they had in Lisbon, Arsenal had five different scorers, with Gabriel, Leandro Trossard, Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka finding the net. West Ham waited until they were 4-0 down before showing a modicum of fight, with goals from Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Emerson Palmieri briefly making things interesting. And what’s next? So it was great to score the fifth one and we could play a very different game in the second half. “We’ve got some momentum, some flow back, three consecutive wins is great. He had no complaints about Trossard’s tap-in from Saka’s cross, or the foul on Saka by a combination of Emerson and Paqueta which allowed Odegaard to add the third from the spot. STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Josh Hubbard scored 14 of his team-high 25 points in the final 10 minutes and Mississippi State pulled away late to post a 91-84 win over a road-weary Prairie View A&M on Sunday afternoon. Prairie View A&M, playing its eighth straight road game after a season-opening win over a non-NCAA opponent, will not play its second home game until it hosts Grambling in the Southwestern Athletic Conference opener January 4. The Panthers have surrendered 100 points or more in three games and opponents have topped 90 points in seven of their eight road losses. Mississippi State (8-1), fresh off a dominating performance in a 90-57 win over No. 18 Pitt in the SEC/ACC Men's Challenge, got all it could handle from the Panthers. The teams were tied at the break at 44-44 and Tanahj Pettway hit from deep to give Prairie View the lead, 65-64 midway through the second half. The Bulldogs responded with a 16-2 run kick-started by a pair of Josh Hubbard layups and a Claudell Harris Jr., 3 and capped by a Hubbard 3 and a Jordan Tillmon layup to take an 80-68 lead with under five minutes to play. Scituate led the entire game but only held a 7-3 advantage late into the fourth quarter. Grayson Foley, on only his third carry of the game, put the contest to bed with 3:02 left to play in regulation on a fourth-and-goal plunge from the one-yard line. The victory sends the Sailors back to the Super Bowl for the fourth time in the past six years with their last victory coming in 2021 in a 14-13 win over Duxbury. Both teams were 10-0 coming into the game and each team recorded shutouts over their quarterfinal opponents, so Scituate head coach Herb Devine knew his squad was in for a long day. “Give credit to Grafton as their defense was the real deal. They were physical, they did a great job up front on us all day, and our kids just had to make plays, and win a little unconventionally,” said Devine after he caught his breath from the post-game celebration. “We got a couple of turnovers, and it definitely helped us out, kind of flipped the field position, and we were able to score. That fourth-and-one was huge, game comes down to t-formation and we get to punch one in and it was pretty incredible.” Scituate won the turnover battle, 3-0, but the big turning point was Lawson Foley’s interception with 7:07 left in the second quarter with the game scoreless. Foley picked off a pass at midfield and returned it up the right sideline down to the Gators 15-yard line. Four plays later, Will Robinson scored from two yards out to give the Sailors the 7-0 lead after Griffin McGirr hit the extra point. Grafton marched back down on the next series, but Gators head coach Chris McMahon elected to go with a 26-yard field goal from Ryan Davis on a fourth-and-four from the nine-yard line to end the first half. “It’s not what we wanted, it’s not how we wanted our seniors to go out, but it’s a tough one,” said McMahon. “We’ve played them three times over the last four years – they are really good. In games like this when you have two good teams, a couple of plays here or there – a turnover, not converting on a third down – that’s the difference in a game like this.” The Gators were inside the 20-yard line of the Sailors on three different occasions and also had a 22-yard touchdown run from Zeeland Youngblood erased on a holding penalty. Finn Gilmore was the offensive star for Grafton with 27 carries for a game-high 127 yards, but it wasn’t enough against the Scituate defense which came up big when the Sailors needed the stops. So, while the Gators had their chances – it was Foley and the Sailors who took advantage of the few opportunities. On the final series with 5:19 left to play, Foley took his second carry of the game 66 yards down to the three-yard line to set up the fourth-quarter theatrics. After three failed attempts against the tough defensive front of the Gators, Coach Devine put his faith back in his sophomore running back for the final nail in the win. “We knew it was going to be a game with playing for field position, maybe our special teams would get a score,” said Devine. “But someone helped break Grayson’s (first) run all the way down, and it’s just a team win. To win a defensive battle like that and not be able to put points on the board like we are used to is a little different, but we will take it.”
