Life expectancy in the U.S. varies by more than 20 years depending on an individual's race and ethnicity and where they live. These widespread and persistent life expectancy disparities have divided the country into "ten Americas," according to new research examining inequities in US life expectancy between 2000 and 2021, published in The Lancet . "The extent and magnitude of health disparities in American society are truly alarming in a country with the wealth and resources of the U.S.," said senior author Professor Christopher JL Murray, Director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), University of Washington, Seattle, U.S. "These disparities reflect the unequal and unjust distribution of resources and opportunities that have profound consequences on well-being and longevity, especially in marginalized populations. The findings come nearly two decades after the landmark "Eight Americas" study, which examined the interacting drivers of health inequities in the U.S. by dividing the US population into eight groups based on geography, race, urbanicity, income per capita, and homicide rate . In this new study, researchers update and expand the original Eight Americas study, dividing the US population into ten mutually exclusive populations, or "Americas," based on race and ethnicity and other variables such as geographic location, metropolitan status, income, and residential segregation. Analyzing death records from the National Vital Statistics System and population estimates from the National Center for Health Statistics, researchers estimated trends in life expectancy at birth—an important indicator of a population's health—from 2000 to 2021 for each of the ten Americas by year, sex, and age group. Stark differences in life expectancy have widened over two decades Despite efforts to reduce health inequalities, the life expectancy gap between the Americas was 12.6 years in 2000 and grew even larger during the 2000s and 2010s (reaching 13.9 years in 2010 and 15.6 years by 2019), and accelerated to 20.4 years after the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2000, Black Americans living in rural, low-income counties in the South (America 9) and Black Americans living in highly-segregated cities (America 7) had the lowest life expectancy (around 70.5 years for both populations), while Asian Americans (America 1) had the highest life expectancy, living on average 83.1 years. Between 2000 and 2010, life expectancy increased for every America except for American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) people living in the West (America 10), who had the shortest lifespan in 2010 after a one-year drop in life expectancy from 72.3 years in 2000 to 71.2 years in 2010. During this time, the three Black Americas (6, 7, and 9) showed some of the largest gains in life expectancy, increasing by as much as 3.7 years, with Black Americans living in other counties (America 6) exceeding the life expectancy of white Americans living in low-income counties in Appalachia and the lower Mississippi Valley (America 8) from 2010 onward, except in 2020. "The gap between life expectancy at birth for Black and white Americans may never have been narrower than it was in the mid-2010s," said co-author Thomas Bollyky from the Council of Foreign Relations, Washington DC, U.S. "It's likely that long-term improvements in education available to Black children and young adults in recent decades, as well as reductions in homicide rates and deaths from HIV/AIDS—causes of death that have disproportionately impacted Black Americans—may have contributed to these noteworthy gains for Black Americans." However, in the following decade (2010–2019), improvements in life expectancy at birth for the three Black Americas (Americas 6, 7, and 9)—as well as all the other Americas—largely stalled. This pattern may be explained by an increase in drug overdose deaths and homicides as well as a slowdown in reductions in cardiovascular disease deaths, likely related to increases in obesity. Widening racial life expectancy gap during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic The COVID-19 pandemic precipitated a staggering drop in life expectancy for all the Americas and substantially widened racial disparities in lifespan. For example, while Black Americans living in highly segregated cities (America 7) and Black Americans living in rural, low-income counties in the South (America 9) were expected to live an average 74.9 years and 72.5 years, respectively, in 2019, this fell by approximately 4.0 years in 2020. For white (the majority), Asian, and AIAN people living in other counties (America 3), the corresponding decline was only 1.4 years—from 79.3 years in 2019 to 77.9 years in 2020. Marginalized groups already had lower life expectancy, and the pandemic further increased the gap. By 2021, Asian Americans (America 1) still had the longest life expectancy at birth, living on average 84 years—a striking 20.4 years longer than AIAN people living in the West (America 10), who had the lowest life expectancy at 63.6 years. Alarming health crisis for American Indian and Alaska Native people in the West AIAN people living in the West (America 10) were the only group to experience a drop in their life expectancy between 2000 and 2010 and again between 2010 and 2019—falling from the already relatively low 72.3 years in 2000 to 70.2 years in 2019. COVID-19 set them even further behind the other Americas, with a 6.6-year drop in life expectancy between 2019 and 2021. These findings suggest that AIAN people are living much shorter lives than any other population due to systemic barriers that have perpetuated social, economic, and health inequities. For example, inadequate health care access and chronic underfunding of Indigenous health services, together with high rates of unemployment and low rates of educational attainment, and the legacy of systemic discrimination, are factors that likely contribute to AIAN people dying at higher rates from highly preventable causes like chronic diseases, smoking, and drug overdose, as well as COVID-19. What is driving these disparities in life expectancy? The findings suggest that differences in educational attainment and income likely explain some of the disparities in life expectancy. For example, Black Americans living in rural, low-income counties in the South (America 9) and AIAN individuals living in the West (America 10) had the lowest income per capita and percentage graduating college as well as the lowest life expectancy in most years between 2000 and 2021. However, the authors note some unexpected disparities, which indicate that other factors beyond income and education can contribute to differences in longevity. For example, white (the majority), Asian, and AIAN people living in other counties (America 3) had the highest income in most years, as well as the highest proportion graduating high school and the second highest percentage of college graduates but was ranked only fourth or fifth in life expectancy prior to 2020. According to co-author Professor Ali Mokdad from IHME, "More research is needed to fully understand why life expectancy is worse for some Americans, so we can better tackle the root causes of poor health for the most disadvantaged. "America's life expectancy gap is unlikely to diminish until a comprehensive, coordinated approach that includes preventive measures and public health initiatives that transcend political divides and fosters collaboration and accountability between state, local, and national entities is developed. "Only then can we hope to create a more equitable and healthier society for all the Americas—and all Americans." The authors point out that the grouping of the US population based on county, race and ethnicity is not the only division that could be used to understand the large inequalities in US life expectancy, and different choices of factors would lead to different results. The authors also note some important study limitations, including that there is a well-known misreporting of race and ethnicity on death certificates, and although they corrected for this misclassification, it increased the uncertainty around the estimates. They also note that data on income per capita and educational attainment from the America Community Survey and 2000 decennial census used different racial and ethnic groups compared to those used in the analysis, which could lead to a mismatch in the estimates of income and educational attainment for three groups (combined AIAN, Asian and NHPI, and Black) and the corresponding Americas. Additionally, while this analysis shows large disparities in life expectancy between the ten Americas, the authors note that there will also be large disparities within these Americas. For example, research shows considerable differences in life expectancy among counties, even for the same racial and ethnic group. Finally, while the ten Americas is defined based on data from a single point in time (primarily 2020), some of the characteristics these definitions are based on are time-varying (eg, income per capita), so it is likely that some county and race and ethnicity combinations would be included in different Americas if data from a different year were used to define the Americas. Writing in a linked Comment, Professor Steven H Woolf from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, U.S. (who was not involved in the study), says that the study confirms the continued existence of different Americas in the U.S., adding that, "The study also underscores the value of investigating intersectionality. Disaggregated data can inform policy decisions about which geographic regions and populations to prioritize in efforts to reduce disparities in life expectancy. Now, if Christianity is synonymous with perfection, I wouldn’t be allowed in a church myself. But it is supposed to embody striving for certain qualities in your daily life, among them kindness, generosity of spirit, certain standards of morality and the accountability that comes with that, along with honesty, forgiveness and love. It has gone viral. The site is awesome, and one that follow routinely too, so it is not surprising how widespread the post has been. Friends have been messaging me all day asking if it is true. Such maps and information are certainly available to anybody, which creates a challenge for the meteorology community. I witness all types of platforms posting long-range snow forecasts. Colleagues like James Spann in Alabama and Brad Panovich in North Carolina routinely push back on what we call “snow pornography.” It plays on the snow lover’s desire, and the social media culture rooted in clicks, views, or shares. When I saw the model information being shared, I cringed. To the site’s credit, they mentioned that such information could change. However, the context was missing, and it was probably better not to post it at all. Atlanta News First meteorologist Ella Dorsey commented on Instagram , “This is just one run of the Euro model. The next run showed 0.2 inches of snow for the same period.” She went on to explain that a weather pattern shift to colder temperature is expected, but information this far out is not reliable for precipitation forecasts. Meteorologist Tyler Mauldin also said in the same thread, “A little early to be posting! Forecasting snow, it’s hard enough three days out, much less 10 days.” As I recently wrote in Forbes.com , “These ‘pick your favorite mode scenarios’ often disappear in the next model run.... credible meteorologists should not convey information based on one model run.” As weather professionals, we know the limitations of long-range or single model runs. However, many people do not and will post or share information without proper context. So what Dr. Shepherd! I hear you. It may all seem innocent, but there are serious implications of “snow porn.” When those forecasts do not verify, people question the credibility of the weather community. When these “fantasy storms” never develop, it amplifies false narratives that weather forecasts are always wrong. As I have written many times, forecasts are right most of the time, but people have biases or shortcomings in how they consume the information. They may not understand percent chance of rain, limitations of weather Apps, or other metrics of uncertainty. There is also a tendency to latch on to the rare bad forecast and overlook the more numerous correct ones. Most people will remember a kicker’s field goal miss in the Super Bowl, and forgot that he made every kick all season. It also “clouds” the boundary of expertise. Meteorologists are trained experts who understand the limitations, tendencies, and biases in weather model information. My colleagues and I are aware of fantasy snowstorms and hurricanes that dissipate in the next model run or when things are ten or more days out. A 2019 study out of Pennsylvania State University has describe the barriers in numerical model weather predictability. Part of the challenge is that many people do not really understand how forecasts are made. The atmosphere is a fluid within a rotating frame of reference. There is a whole lot of physics, calculus, and complex computational processing going on y’all. Those calculations are further affected by slight differences in the initial condition of the model, data quality or scale, and changes in the weather scenario between runs. To mitigate against these challenges, we use numerous models or ensembles (multiple manifestations) to reduce uncertainty. We do not anchor forecasts in one single outcome or scenario. Another challenge is that once bad, viral forecasts are in the public space, confirmation bias sets in. People have seen or heard what they want to happen and will often resist credible explanations. We saw this during Hurricane Helene when colleagues were being threatened or attacked for explaining that we cannot control hurricanes. Confirmation bias and “wishcasting” are powerful motivators if you want to believe that a snow scenario is possible. I will defer to my psychology colleagues for deeper explanations. However, trust me, it is as real as the irrational overload on French toast ingredients purchased at the very mention of snow in the South. I encourage you to stop, take inventory of the source, and process the information carefully before pushing the “share” button or running to the grocery storm. Having said all of that, conditions are trending towards a colder pattern for the South by the middle of January. That means snowfall could be in future cards, but it is certainly too early to confirm base on a model you are seeing in late December.

Jimmy Carter, the 39th president and a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, has died at 100If you’re tuning into the radio in Boulder County, chances are the dial lands on 88.5 FM, the home of KGNU. Known for its eclectic mix of music, independent news and being listener-and-volunteer-supported, KGNU has been a beloved Front Range audible staple for 46 years. Now, the station is turning the volume up on its future with plans for a new downtown headquarters. So why the big move? KGNU’s current home at 4700 Walnut Street, where the station has operated for more than 25 years, is — according to Station Manager Tim Russo — looking a little worse for wear. The facility has older technology and limited community space for the plethora of activities that KGNU hosts — including over 200 live in-studio, on-air musical performances to date in 2024. After Boulder County’s devastating floods of 2013 underscored the need for more resilient infrastructure, KGNU began exploring possibilities for a new home base. By 2017, with the support of Boulder’s Community, Culture and Safety ballot measure, the dream of a new headquarters started to take shape. Last year, the station finally closed on the 14th Street property, a former office building that Russo calls “the perfect spot.” “The new facility is in an incredible location for us — right downtown and next to Boulder High School, which opens up so many opportunities,” said Russo. “We’re excited to have a permanent media training space where we can partner with programs like AVID for bilingual, first-generation students, providing a safe space to explore media, storytelling and literacy. Being a bookend to the Civic Center redevelopment and near the bus station also makes us more accessible to the entire community.” Russo said the new headquarters will help strengthen its partnership with the University of Colorado Boulder’s College of Media, Communication and Information. “Starting in the spring of 2025, we’ll be an official off-campus work-study partner, allowing students on financial aid to work at KGNU with partial stipends from the university,” Russo said. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to mentor younger and more diverse media makers, giving them hands-on experience and exposure to community-centered media. We hope this space becomes a magnet for young people, offering them a safe and welcoming environment where they can not only learn, but also help shape the future of media.” The new headquarters isn’t just in a prime location; it’s brimming with some pretty snazzy features designed to inspire collaboration and creativity. A spacious, two-story community café will serve as the building’s social heart and caffeine center, with co-working spaces overlooking the buzz below. High-tech studios will host live broadcasts, podcasts and media-training programs, while a rooftop event space will provide stunning views and opportunities for everything from outdoor concerts to casual gatherings. Perhaps the crown jewel of the design is the black-box performance space, a flexible venue with retractable seating for up to 75 people. Equipped with top-notch audio and video capabilities, the space will be ideal for everything from live music and theater rehearsals to book readings and political debates. “We’re designing this as a flexible space to accommodate a wide variety of events, and we’re committed to offering below-market rental rates for nonprofits and cultural organizations so they have an affordable place downtown to host their activities,” Russo said. To keep the space accessible, KGNU plans to offer below-market rental rates for community groups and nonprofits, ensuring that cost isn’t a barrier to creativity. “So many organizations have been priced out of downtown,” Russo said. “We want to change that.” But the headquarters won’t just be a pretty new building. Sustainability is at the core of KGNU’s design philosophy, and the facility will feature a solar rooftop with innovative energy storage solutions to ensure the station stays operational during emergencies — an increasingly vital need in a region prone to wildfires and floods. “This is more than a building — it’s a resiliency hub,” Russo said. “We’ve designed it to serve as a lifeline during times of crisis, providing emergency alerts and critical information when the community needs it most.” Russo hopes the project will inspire other community media organizations to think big. “This is a complex, collaborative effort,” he said. “We’re learning a lot about public-private partnerships, sustainable design and how to create a space that truly reflects the needs of the community. Once this is done, we’re excited to share those lessons with others.” Construction is expected to continue into 2025, with a ribbon-cutting celebration planned for next fall. New England did not get any help from the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders, both of whom dropped to 2-10 on Thursday and Friday. The Patriots need the Jacksonville Jaguars to miraculously pull off a divisional upset to have any potential of moving into the top three. That's assuming the Patriots lose to the Indianapolis Colts at home on Sunday. A loss to the Colts isn't the worth thing because it gets the Pats closer to a premier draft pick, but the franchise has to walk the fine balance of wanting to lose while also having Drake Maye improve each week at quarterback. As unlikely as it sounds, the Patriots need to root for the Jaguars to upset the Houston Texans. Jacksonville is the only two-win team that hasn't played yet in Week 13. The Giants and Raiders already moved to 2-10. The only hope for the Patriots is that the Jaguars find a way to respond off the bye following their humiliating loss at the hands of the Detroit Lions. Jacksonville gave Houston a game back in Week 4 in a 24-20 defeat and it is 1-1 in AFC South games so far this season. The Patriots should hope for the Jags to upset for the divisional game off the bye so at least one of the two-win teams can be cleared out. The Carolina Panthers showed more promise than expected in the last few weeks. Carolina knocked off the New Orleans Saints and Giants and then played a close game with the Kansas City Chiefs. The Panthers are trending in the right direction ahead of their clash with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which is exactly what the Pats want to see. Carolina currently holds the No. 5 pick in the projected order. Another win could clear the Panthers out of the top five mix entirely. Rooting for the New York Jets is easier to do when it benefits the Patriots' draft stock. The Jets hold the No. 6 pick in the projected order ahead of their home clash with the Seattle Seahawks. The Patriots would love for the Jets to clear themselves out of the race for a top-five pick so they can benefit and so that an elite talent does not land elsewhere in the AFC East. However, the Jets only have one win dating back to Week 4 and Seattle needs a win of its own to keep pace in a competitive NFC West title race. The Jets might be close to giving up on their season, but for New England's sake, it needs to hope that isn't the case just yet for Aaron Rodgers and Co.
