REFORM, Ala. (AP) — A federal judge ruled that the family of former NFL player Glenn Foster Jr., who died in law enforcement custody in Alabama, can pursue a lawsuit alleging his death was the result of excessive force. Foster, a former New Orleans Saints defensive end, died on Dec. 6, 2021, three days after being arrested and taken to jail in rural Pickens County for alleged speeding and attempting to elude police. A judge ordered Foster taken to a medical facility in Tuscaloosa for a mental evaluation. Foster was found unresponsive in the back of a law enforcement vehicle when he arrived at the facility. He was pronounced dead about 30 minutes later. His widow, Pamela Foster, filed a lawsuit against officers at the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office and jail saying Foster had been beaten, shocked with a Taser and strangled while at the jail. The defendants then asked a federal judge to dismiss the case. U.S. District Judge Annemarie Carney Axon ruled Thursday refused to dismiss allegations of excessive force and failure to intervene. Axon dismissed other portions of the lawsuit. The ruling came a day before the third anniversary of Foster’s death. Foster appeared in 17 games for the Saints in 2013 and 2014.TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — This isn’t a week when coach Todd Bowles feels he needs to find the right words to ensure his Tampa Bay Buccaneers are motivated to face the last-place Carolina Panthers. The Bucs (8-7) have won eight of the last nine meetings between the NFC South rivals, including the past three with Baker Mayfield at quarterback. It hasn’t exactly been smoothly sailing against the Panthers (4-11), though, for the three-time defending division champions. And, with at least a share of first place on the line Sunday, Bowles and his players say they are focused solely on rebounding from last week’s disappointing loss to the Dallas Cowboys. “We know it’s going to be a tough ballgame. It went overtime last time. They’re coached very well; they play very hard,” Bowles said, referencing Tampa Bay’s 26-23 win at Carolina on Dec. 1. “We know what’s at stake for us. It doesn’t need to be talked about. Everybody understands that,” Bowles added. “We’ve got to clean up our own mistakes, and we’ve got to play an error-free football game.” The Bucs are tied with Atlanta for the best record in the NFC South, however the Falcons (8-7) hold the tiebreaker after sweeping the season series between the teams. To claim a fourth straight division title, Tampa Bay needs to win remaining home games against the Panthers and New Orleans Saints while Atlanta loses at least once in the last two weeks of the regular season. If the Falcons hold on to win the South, the Bucs can earn a wild-card playoff berth if they win out and the Washington Commanders lose twice. Mayfield, who has resurrected his career since being released by Carolina two years ago, summed up the attitude in a resilient locker room. The Bucs have won four of five games following a four-game losing streak threatened their playoff hopes. “I keep saying it, this team has the mental makeup of a great team. We just have to continue to fight and find ways to win,” the quarterback said. “If we don’t take of business, we won’t be in the playoffs.” Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard cost his team the game four weeks ago against Tampa Bay when he fumbled on the second possession of overtime just after Carolina had reached field goal range. Mayfield responded by leading the Bucs back down the field for the winning field goal. The loss was devastating for Hubbard at the time, but he promised himself when the opportunity arose again he’d make the most of it. He did that this past Sunday, when he carried twice for 49 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown run in which he broke two tackles, in overtime to lift the Panthers to a 36-30 win over Arizona, knocking the Cardinals out of the playoff hunt. “I’d let it go, but it’s definitely been in the back of my head a little bit,” Hubbard said. “Like I said, when the next opportunity came, I told myself I’m going to get it back for them. To be able to have them trust me in that opportunity again, and to have it in that way is a blessing from God.” Bryce Young has shown solid progress in his decision making, particularly when the pocket begins to break down. Last week, the second-year QB ran for a career-best 68 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown. Young was benched after two games this season, but since returning to the lineup has played better, restoring some faith that perhaps the No. 1 overall pick in 2023 can be the team’s quarterback of the future. “Just time in the system and time as a team for us to come together,” Young said of why he has improved. “For me, being able to get reps, and get time with everyone. It’s just all of us being able to feed off of each other, and it’s been able to allow us to turn in the right direction.” The Panthers have been abysmal against the run, allowing nearly 200 yards per game on the ground over the last seven games. In the last meeting with Tampa Bay, Bucky Irving ran for a career-high 152 yards and a touchdown, so Carolina’s defense has a good idea of what's coming Sunday. Mayfield has beaten Carolina three times since joining the Bucs in 2023. All of the meetings have been close, though, with the Panthers losing twice by three points and Tampa Bay settling for three field goals in a 9-0 regular season-ending victory that clinched its third straight NFC South championship last January. “We know them well. They know us well,” Mayfield said. AP Sports Writer Steve Reed in Charlotte, North Carolina, contributed to this report. NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nflNone

Middle East latest: Lebanon closes all its land border crossings with Syria except oneTbilisi, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 8th Dec, 2024) Thousands of pro-Europe protesters rallied in against the 's decision to shelve accession talks, marking the 11th consecutive day of demonstrations amid a post-election crisis. The country's pro-Western and the president rejected the ruling Georgian Dream party's claimed victory in 26 parliamentary polls and tens of thousands had taken to the streets against alleged electoral fraud. Irakli Kobakhidze's shock decision last week that EU-candidate will not seek the opening of accession talks triggered a fresh wave of protests, which met with a tough response. Kobakhidze has labelled the protesters as opposition-controlled "violent groups", claiming their attempted revolution "has failed" and -- using language reminiscent of Kremlin rhetoric against its political opponents -- to punish "liberal fascists". But the largely peaceful protests have shown no signs of abating, even though turnout by the end of the week was slightly lower compared to previous days. Riot used tear and cannons to disperse the rallies and the said that 402 protesters had been arrested since 28, including "more than 30 on charges" and the remainder for administrative offences. The Georgian Dream 's critics accuse it of creeping authoritarianism and of steering the country back towards . - 'Can't scare us' - On evening, thousands of people gathered outside the building in the capital , some demonstrators banging on the metal barriers blocking the 's entrance, waving EU flags and loudly blowing horns and whistles, an AFP reporter witnessed. City authorities began setting up a giant tree on the pavement outside during the day, but the installation quickly became a symbolic battleground for protesters. Demonstrators hung on the tree's metallic framework photos of individuals reportedly beaten by -- their faces swollen and bruised -- alongside fliers "Bloody tree." "It's not time for celebrations now," said Nino, 27. The authorities "can't scare us... we are not going to stop." As thousands rallied on Saturday outside , dozens of unidentified masked men stormed the offices of the For Change , brutally assaulting figure Koba Khabazi. The attackers then severely beat two journalists the independent station Pirveli as officers stood by without intervening during the incident near the venue. The Georgian Dream 's security forces had faced persistent accusations of deploying plainclothes security agents to target and political opponents. Kobakhidze announced on Saturday the 's "plan to introduce legislation prohibiting participants at gatherings concealing their faces using any means". The measure "is crucial for preventing violence", he told a conference. - 'Alarming repression' - 's pro-Western President Salome Zurabishvili -- at loggerheads with the ruling party -- said on Saturday that she had had an "in-depth discussion" with US president-elect and French leader Emmanuel Macron in . She said they had discussed the "stolen and extremely alarming repression against the people of ", adding: "The Georgian people have a friend in ." 's leader Volodymyr Zelensky - who has warned of influence in for months -- said Saturday he fully backed 's anti-government protesters. Zelensky urged to stop "surrendering" to in a meeting with Zurabishvili in . Zurabishvili has alleged widespread fraud in 's parliamentary polls, branding the freshly elected legislature and "illegitimate". With both sides ruling out a compromise, there appeared to be no clear route out of the crisis. The , and are among the Western countries to have denounced the crackdown on protests, but the has refused to back down. Thousands have also staged daily protests in other parts of , including the cities of , , , Zugdidi, and Telavi, local reported. Critics of Georgian Dream are enraged by what they call its betrayal of the country's bid for EU membership, enshrined in the constitution and supported by around 80 percent of the population. Georgian Dream, in power for more than a decade, has advanced controversial legislation in recent years, targeting and independent and curbing LGBTQ rights. has warned that such policies are incompatible with EU membership, while domestic detractors accuse the of copying 's playbook. ub-im/rlpHegseth meets with moderate Sen. Check your junk mail: Some affected by the Equifax data breach to get more moneyFeeling the Christmas burnout already? Don't worry you're not alone. And we haven't even made it past the big day yet. Dry January is the calendar month where traditionally Brits put the bottle down and commit to a period of abstaining from alcohol. This is typically because we all overdo it in December and let the jovial festivities take over us. Slaves to the 'Christmas bev', we let ourselves say yes to the pub when we otherwise wouldn't, meaning dry January is practically welcomed. "Gone are the days when I would waste entire weekends hungover and anxious." After a bump on the head after a bottomless brunch, Cara decided to revaluate her relationship with alcohol and take on the Dry January® challenge. Cara found her social life flourished after she... pic.twitter.com/Lhb33tQ33W — Dry January (@dryjanuary) December 23, 2024 But sadly, a lot of us find this difficult. January is a notoriously grim month, which means to escape the seasonal depression, we find ourselves turning back to alcohol. Not all of course, but it is a tough task for some. Feel that's you? Don't worry, it can be relatively easy. As Bethan Higson, founder of non-alcoholic Mother Root Beverages , puts it: “Every January, people vow to become better versions of themselves – whether it be getting fit or eschewing alcohol, in an effort to live a more healthy, alcohol-free life.” Now, Charlotte Faure Green, nutritional advisor for Mother Root, along with other experts, share their advice for staying on track during Dry January. Was gonna do dry jan but then realised I support Leicester — Chloe (@ChloeRT9) December 16, 2024 1. Try to cope with what life throws at you without a tipple “One of the main reasons people struggle to make it to the end of January without alcohol, is a lack of emotional coping skills required to manage what sobriety may bring up for them,” explains Faure Green. She continued: “It can feel incredibly uncomfortable when we’re used to abating feelings of, say, anxiety, with alcohol. "[Try to] find other methods for calming the nervous system: breathing techniques, kitchen dance parties, talking therapies, getting out in nature for a walk, yoga and meditation. Clichéd perhaps, but they are clinically proven to be very effective.” 2. Think about the money you’re saving “Those undertaking Dry January often set sights on a big boozy blow-out on February 1, and this only feeds into our ‘feast or famine’, mentality,” says Faure Green. “Instead, consider how much you’re saving over the month by not drinking and make a list of wonderful things that you can do with that spare cash. "Choose what will drive you the most. For some, it helps to put a picture of that goal on the fridge to reinforce it with a regular reminder, and drive success.” 3. Increase your GABA “One of the mechanisms that makes alcohol so calming after a stressful day is that it seeks out our GABA receptors and gives them a great big hug. GABA is our calming neurotransmitter, and when we’re producing it in abundance, we can feel relaxed,” explains Faure Green. She went on to say: “So, rather than artificially stimulating those receptors with booze, eat foods that increase circulating GABA... spinach, broccoli, garlic, fish, potatoes and bananas are good sources of B6, a vitamin that’s a vital co-factor in its production. “Green tea also contains an amino acid called L-theanine which is thought to stimulate GABA creation – the ultimate calming cup of tea.” 4. Don’t do it alone “Do Dry January with a friend for moral support and stock your cupboards with great non-alcoholic alternatives, and you’ll still be able to enjoy that end-of-the-day cocktail or aperitif,” suggests Craig Hutchison, co-founder of Maria & Craig’s non-alcoholic-distilled-botanical-spirit. 5. Keep a diary of how much better you’re feeling “Are you sleeping better? Have you lost weight? The average alcoholic cocktail has between 300-400 calories, so keep track and ensure you’re aware of the benefits – it can do wonders for your will power,” says Hutchison. 6. Go public with your challenge “The more people who are aware you’re taking January off alcohol, the more encouragement from your peers,” says Hutchison. The expert continued: “Follow some of your favourite non-alcoholic brands on Instagram. They will, for sure, keep you motivated throughout the month.” Recommended reading: How much does drinking booze cost you? Don’t worry if you weaken “If you slip once or twice, don’t beat yourself up and don’t just give up. You can start again the next day – it’s all about balance,” says Simone Caporale, award-winning international bartender and ambassador for ZEO non-alcoholic spirit. Simone added: “And you never know, the way you’ll feel while you’re taking a break from drinking, might actually push you to keep going.”

The USD fell vs the CAD despite the Bank of Canada cutting rates by 50 basis points as expected to 3.25% from 3.75%. The central bank has now cut 175 basis points since its first cut in June 2024. The last two meetings have seen a decline of 100 basis points after 3 consecutive cuts of 25 basis points. Prior statement said " If the economy evolves broadly in line with our latest forecast, we expect to reduce the policy rate further" but that was dropped Current statement says "Going forward, we will be evaluating the need for further reductions in the policy rate one decision at a time" Current statement says "Governing Council has reduced the policy rate substantially since June." From his press conference opening statement Macklem: With the policy rate now substantially lower, we anticipate a more gradual approach to monetary policy if the economy evolves broadly as expected." Noted that Q3 GDP growth was lower than BOC expected and Q4 tracking lower as well Said Canada’s job market is still softening Consumer and housing both improved in Q3 as lower rates boosted spending Reduced immigration targets suggest 2025 growth will be slower than BOC expected The economic outlook is clouded by the possibility of new tariffs on Canadian exports to the United States, which Macklem calls "a major new uncertainty" BOCs Macklem during his Q&A said that the central bank discussed both 25 and 50 basis point rate cuts before ultimately deciding on a 50 bps reduction. That the decision was driven by two key factors: The need to exit restrictive policy territory. and Economic data signaling a softer GDP growth outlook compared to October estimates. Lower immigration targets were cited as a factor behind anticipated slower growth, while the potential for tariffs on Canadian exports adds significant uncertainty, though the bank emphasized it cannot base policy on speculative risks. Macklem acknowledged that the economy remains in excess supply with signs of softness, but widespread job losses typical of recessions have not materialized. The Canadian dollar's weakness has largely stemmed from U.S. dollar strength and will need to be factored into future forecasts. Housing market dynamics, influenced by immigration and rate cuts, are being closely monitored. The USDCAD moved lower initially (higher CAD) as markets reacted to the 4-year highs and the acknowledgment that the pace of cuts was to slow, but the pair recovered as the day progressed (cutting some of the CAD gains). Technically, the price of the USDCAD moved to - and through - a swing area target at 1.4145 and the rising 100 hour MA but could not sustain downside momentum and bounced back above those levels (the 100-hour MA is at 1.4135 and moving higher). The pair is trading at 1.4162 going into the close. A move back below 1.4145 and the 100-hour MA could see more selling with a swing area at 1.4089 to 1.4104 as the next target support. A move above 1.4177 would disappoint sellers looking for corrective selling. Crude oil moving higher is a positive for the CAD generally. Crude oil is up $1.75 or 2.55% today, at $70.34 currently. Its 100 day MA at $71.65 is the next key upside target. However, the move higher today had limited impact. In the US today, the CPI data came in as expected at 0.3% for both the headline and the core readings. Although as expected, the core has now been up by 0.3% for 4 consecutive months slowing the decline and leaving the YoY core well above the 2% target at 3.3%. The headline moved up to 2.7% from 2.6% in the prior month. Nevertheless, the market was pretty much set that anything as expected or better would allow the Fed to further adjust policy lower. The expectation for a 25 basis point cut is up to 95% when the Fed meets next Tuesday and Wednesday. The ECB will meet tomorrow and is expected to cut rates by 25 basis points to 3.15% from 3.4%. That decision will be announced at 8:15 AM ET with the press conference scheduled to start at 8:45 AM ET. The EURUSD had an down, up and back down again. The pair did stay below the 200 hour MA at 1.05322 after two tests of the MA line found willing sellers. The price ia trading ner 1.0500 into the close with support below at 1.0448 to 1.0461. .Leinster's 'new' attack of Sam Prendergast and Jordie Barrett - three-tries in six-minutes of absolute magic against Bristol
