WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday threatened 100% tariffs against a bloc of nine nations if they act to undermine the U.S. dollar. His threat was directed at countries in the so-called BRIC alliance, which consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates. Turkey, Azerbaijan and Malaysia have applied to become members and several other countries have expressed interest in joining. While the U.S. dollar is by far the most-used currency in global business and has survived past challenges to its preeminence, members of the alliance and other developing nations say they are fed up with America’s dominance of the global financial system . The dollar represents roughly 58% of the world’s foreign exchange reserves, according to the IMF and major commodities like oil are still primarily bought and sold using dollars. The dollar's dominance is threatened, however, with BRICS' growing share of GDP and the alliance's intent to trade in non-dollar currencies — a process known as de-dollarization. Trump, in a Truth Social post, said: “We require a commitment from these Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. Economy." At a summit of BRIC nations in October, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the U.S. of “weaponizing” the dollar and described it as a “big mistake.” “It’s not us who refuse to use the dollar,” Putin said at the time. “But if they don’t let us work, what can we do? Levy and Mohammad Najjar, is a deep-time investigation of society in the Faynan region of Southern Jordan, said Assistant Professor of Anthropological Archaeology Matt Howland at Wichita State University, in Wichita, Kansas. "This means that we are interested in the long- term Occupation of the region, ranging from the Neolithic period, to the region's peak occupation and copper production during the Iron Age, to the Middle Islamic period, when copper was also produced," Howland said A lot of the excavations conducted by the ELRAP were focused on the relationship between copper production and social complexity, and helped show how the mining and manufacture of copper helped a local complex society develop in the Early Iron Age in Jordan, Howland continued. The professor added that his research focuses mainly on the use of spatial and 3D technologies to investigate the ancient past and share results of this research with the public. Howland worked with Levy during his undergraduate studies at Penn State University and his PhD studies at the University of California San Diego. "I developed research projects using GIS, a technology used for digital mapping, to investigate Iron Age societies in the Southern Levant. In my Ph.D. dissertation, I investigated Iron Age trade networks based in the Faynan region of Southern Jordan, and how high-status elites in Faynan controlled the manufacture and export of copper across the entire Southern Levant and beyond," Howland said. Since the team no longer actively excavates, it is interested in sharing some of the results with the general public, especially including the people of Jordan, who have always been very hospitable hosts and partners in the project. Several years ago, the ELRAP team developed an Arabic-language StoryMap to share some of the results relating to the Iron Age archaeology and heritage of Faynan with Jordanians. "Now, our new project shares 3D models that help tell the story of the Iron Age and Middle Islamic archaeology of Faynan on the website Sketchfab. Users can explore the models on this website in Arabic according to their own interest in the history and archaeology of Faynan," Howland elaborated. "We want users, especially Arabic-speaking Jordanians, to be able to explore the 3D data we have collected in the field during years of archaeological survey and excavation in the region without having to look through English-language and pay walled journal articles," the professor added. In this work, the team found it very important to work collaboratively with Jordanians to help tell the story of the archaeology of Faynan, and, luckily, they were able to collaborate with not only co-director Najjar, but also a librarian Samya Kafafi from American Centre of Research and a Jordanian student Omar Khalil from Wichita State University. The link between Faynan and Howland goes back to 2012 when he spent two months excavating the site. Howland immediately found the Faynan region to be extremely beautiful and the Bedouin people who live there to be very hospitable and friendly. Also, the archaeology of Faynan is very exciting, and is an underappreciated cultural heritage resource. "The many amazing archaeological sites in Faynan help to tell an incredible story about the development of a local complex society that was at the centre of a flourishing trade network in the Iron Age, just like the Nabateans later on in history, the professor said. As I write this, almost 200 nations are meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan, to discuss how to address the perils of climate change. While there are early signs of positive movement, the 29th edition of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) seems to be struggling, especially on climate finance negotiations. Quite fittingly but worryingly, the meeting is happening amidst the backdrop of an expected record level of greenhouse gas emissions this year, contrary to the aims of the Paris Agreement. One approach that is creating a lot of buzz in accelerating climate action is through generative artificial intelligence (AI). Sans the hype, there are promising new applications that could massively boost climate solutions. Indeed, recent scientific literature suggests that AI could be a game changer, and sky’s the limit to its applications. For one, future climate projections are based on computer models that require enormous computing power. This is why only wealthy countries can afford to develop and run these models. With AI, it may be possible to accelerate the modeling process while increasing its precision. Hopefully, such AI-based modeling may also become more affordable for developing countries for them to run country-specific climate models to better guide their decision-makers. AI could expand climate mitigation action (reduction of greenhouse gases) in various ways. According to the MIT Technology Review, AI could improve predictions of energy demand, help discover new materials for more efficient energy storage, make transport routes more efficient, and make buildings more efficient, among other things. A global coalition of academics and AI experts has built the Transient Climate Evolution (TraCE) model at the planetary scale. This AI-powered model uses satellite images and ground data to track worldwide greenhouse gas emissions in ways never done before. AI applications on climate and disaster resilience are even more intriguing for vulnerable countries like ours. For example, Vonich and Hakim (2024) demonstrated that AI can predict the occurrence of heat waves around three weeks in advance in the western part of the United States. On the other hand, Almikaeel and co-workers (2024) have developed an AI flood model that can predict floods about 12 hours in advance. Lastly, Cano and others (2024) used AI to predict the onset of diarrheal disease in Nepal, Taiwan, and Vietnam using climatic data such as ENSO events. Their work could alert public health officials of an impending health crisis months in advance if further refined. Admittedly, many of the above applications are in their infant stage and need further fine-tuning and testing. But there is enough evidence to show that there is more to come. However, just like other technological marvels, there is no free lunch. One of AI’s most cited impacts is its contribution to the rise of greenhouse gases. For example, recent media reports have pointed out that Google emitted about 50 percent more greenhouse gases than in 2019 because of its increased use of AI. Microsoft had a similar, albeit a more minor, increase in emissions. A study by Columbia University warned that emissions from data centers could surpass that of the aviation industry shortly. These increased emissions will have to be balanced by AI’s potential to reduce emissions, as discussed above. Several ethical issues must also be resolved to prevent AI from being hijacked for nefarious purposes. These issues include protecting privacy and intellectual property, among others. There is also a considerable gap between the “haves” and the “have-nots” nations in terms of using AI. These issues and more should be discussed within and among countries to ensure a more equitable sharing of AI benefits. As a highly vulnerable country, the Philippines must explore how AI could make us more resilient to climate hazards and long-term climate change. Our policymakers should increase their support to our scientists and developers so that we can optimize the use of AI toward this end. This should include capacity building for our research and development people to accelerate further the integration of AI into our climate action and disaster risk reduction programs. Partnerships between the government, the academe, and civil society with the private sector can unlock hitherto untapped resources. Whatever happens in COP29 in Baku and in successive COPs, the Philippines must exert all efforts to enhance our people’s coping capacity and resilience to climate change. Amzil's 14 lead New Mexico past Colorado State 76-68Article content Earlier this year, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation into more than three-quarters of a million Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator vehicles from model years 2021 to 2023 to understand the source of reported under-hood fires. Now, some owners are taking Jeep to task over the issue by turning to the American legal system. In a complaint filed south of the border, plaintiffs from states ranging from Kentucky and Tennessee to Oregon and California are seeking unspecified damages and a fix to the alleged defect. Those bringing the suit to court say they would not have bought the models in question, or paid significantly less for them, had they known about such issues. In nine reported incidents with one reported injury, conflagration – ahem, fiery – incidents may have occurred while the vehicles had their ignitions turned off, though some are said to have caught fire whilst running. It is suggested an electrical connector at the power steering pump contributes to the problem. Online searches for dockets and filings tell us this legal challenge is titled ‘Graves et al v. FCA US LLC,’ and was launched on November 7 of this year with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Fun fact: it cost a fee of $405 to do so, not counting whatever untold rate is being charged by the phalanx of lawyers listed in the proceeding. The name “Graves” listed in the lawsuit seems to refer one Jeff Graves of California. Interestingly, there is also a historical record of one Robert Graves bringing legal action against Jeep back in 2021 for a litany of complaints about his 2014 Jeep Cherokee. There is nothing to say he is related to the Jeff Graves whose name headlines this latest legal challenge against the brand, but they did both own Jeeps and are both listed in court documents as being from California. (There are, of course, also nearly 40 million people living in California.) The plaintiffs in this case seek to represent a national class of buyers and lessees of the allegedly affected Jeeps in the United States. This lawsuit raises legal claims including a so-called breach of warranty and unjust enrichment for the automaker. Graves et al are looking for remedies including a repair for the alleged defect; restitution; and everyone’s absolute favourite legal ask, damages.
