Stock market today: Dow leaps 400 points to fresh high, Russell 2000 notches first record since 2021A cancer patient living in Laois but being treated in Cork has called on the next Government to increase financial supports for patients who find themselves with added costs as they undergo treatment. Samantha Vaughan, 49, said she is grieving her old life. “You think it will never knock on your door and here it was knocking on my door. And I was a non-smoker, so when they said it was lung cancer, I said are you kidding? “It was a real shock," she said. More than a year on from major surgery to remove her cancer, she said: “I had half a lung removed on my right side — top and middle lobe. So I’ve been learning to breathe again, it was a tough old battle for a good few months. “Reality hits now and it can hit very hard. At the end of the day, it’s a chronic illness now because I’m missing a half-lung.” She explained: “I am grieving the old person, this is the new person now and I have to learn how to be this person.” Ms Vaughan had struggled to recover from covid in 2022 and sought further testing. “In one way I feel very lucky that I got covid, and I feel lucky that I was proactive, being an advocate in myself and pushing for it,” she said. “I felt there was something wrong. And I had stage 2 of an aggressive cancer so God only knows where I would be now if I hadn’t pushed for that X-ray.” Financial pressure Unable to resume work as a retail manager, the mother of four — two adults and two teens — said she and her husband were “plummeted” into unexpected financial pressure. Her care is split between Cork University Hospital and the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital. “I’m fine with the hospital I got. I’m lucky with the doctor and consultant but going up and down there is a bit of a nightmare,” she said. “You would have had the €50 for diesel, the tolls — which are going up again — and the parking, so it's the guts of €80 to €100 each time.” She is grateful her care, including targeted therapy, now is state-funded but is very worried about ongoing costs. Ms Vaughan had been hesitant to apply for a medical card, saying: “At the start, I thought it would be embarrassing to go looking for it.” But as the costs mounted, she did apply. This took nine weeks to process, including having to re-submit some paperwork three times. “In the end then I got three medical cards, with three different dates on them. It was ridiculous,” she said. Ms Vaughan is backing the Irish Cancer Society in its call for the next government to prioritise cancer care. What's your view on this issue? You can tell us here An Irish Cancer Society spokeswoman said: “Households affected by cancer see an average loss of income of around €1,500 per month, which is around €18,000 over the course of the year. “At the same time, day-to-day costs remain, like mortgages or rent, and additional expenses emerge for things like transport, medicines, wigs, parking, childcare etc.” The society is calling for hospital car-parking charges to be abolished, an automatic entitlement to medical cards, and financial support for patients with life-limiting cancer diagnoses.
Play, Die, Mutate: A two-man team worked for an ungodly amount of time on a "simple" roguelike game, but now they are nearly done and celebrating their first major release. Caves of Qud is one of those punishingly hard games in which you can fully immerse yourself, with permadeath looming as a constant threat to spoil the fun. Caves of Qud takes inspiration from Dwarf Fortress and other lore-rich worlds, blending core quest-based gameplay mechanics with procedurally generated content. Freehold Games, which includes Brian Bucklew, Jason Grinblat, and other contributors, worked on the game for 17 years. Now, they have announced that release 1.0 is ready to launch on new and old PCs – stretching all the way back to the Windows 7 era. Caves of Qud (CoQ) is a science fantasy roguelike epic experience dealing with retrofuturism, deep simulation, and swathes of sentient plants, as stated on the game's official Steam page . The game has an "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating with 95% of positive reviews. The exotic, far future world depicted in CoQ contains thousand-year-old civilizations, while the player can assemble their character from over 70 "mutations" and defects. There is a digging feature that provides a way to overcome every obstacle, going through walls with a pickaxe, a corrosive gas mutation, a lava-melting ability, and more. Monster limbs can be "hacked" thanks to every NPC being a fully simulated character as the player's, so you could "psionically dominate" a spider, go through the world as a spider, lay webs and eat prey. Caves of Qud is brutally difficult and deaths are permanent, the developers warn, but players can always roll a new character if they want. CoQ 1.0 introduces some significant improvements to the game, including the conclusion of the main quest, multiple endings, new music and sound effects, a more polished UI. There's even a Dromad Deluxe Edition with additional contents and future DLCs, though I will never understand why people insist on pay more money to get "exclusive" stuff for a digital-only game. And no, my two Elden Ring Collector's Editions absolutely don't count here. To ease new players into the game, the developers collaborated with SBPlaysGames to create a beginner-friendly tutorial . This ensures that first-time players won't feel as lost as if they were trying to play Ultima I on a 2024 PC Booter machine. Now that CoQ 1.0 is complete, Freehold Games plans to take a well-deserved break before resuming development with new story arcs. The team has yet to decide whether these arcs will be released as free updates or paid DLC.Beacon Healthcare Systems Expands Leadership Team with Addition of Ayman Mohamed as Chief Technology Officer

Police Minister Mark Mitchell is claiming he and Police Commissioner Richard Chambers are aligned on the Government’s target to train 500 extra officers by November next year, despite Chambers warning MPs it could take longer . Prime Minister Christopher Luxon yesterday threw his support behind what he described as an “ambitious” goal but reiterated Chambers’ commitment to prioritise the quality of trained officers over hitting the target. In coalition negotiations, National and New Zealand First agreed on a commitment to train 500 more police officers in the two years to November 27, next year. Deemed an ambitious goal by former Police Commissioner Andrew Coster, current commissioner Richard Chambers last week told a select committee he was open to taking longer to train 500 new officers so the quality of the officers was retained. “If it takes us a little bit of extra time ... then we’ll take that,” Chambers said to MPs, adding that was “probably the community expectation”.
