How co-writing a book threatened the Carters’ marriageGeneral Matheen has hailed President-Elect John Dramani Mahama for his anti-corruption drive Ghanaian businessman Abdul Jinsar Matheen, alias General Matheen, has hailed President-Elect John Dramani Mahama for his decision to set up a preparatory team for his flagship anti-corruption program, Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL). General Matheen, who is a leading member of the National Democratic Congress, stated that John Mahama trumpeted ORAL as one of his major policies during the campaign period and that it is imperative he fulfills the promise he made to Ghanaians. He stated that the popularity of the ORAL policy comes from the perception by Ghanaians that the Akufo-Addo administration had engaged in state resource capture and that it is important for the incoming administration to recover the allegedly looted state resources. General Matheen believes that the committee appointed by John Mahama to collect information on possible corrupt practices in the Akufo-Addo administration will do a great job for the country. “John Mahama made a commitment to Ghanaians during the campaign, and it is important that he fulfills the promise he made to the public. ORAL and the 24-hour economy were the most popular slogans because Ghanaians have seen the corruption under the Akufo-Addo government and want something to be done. If Mahama is unable to deal with them, it will be a blot on his government, and we will be punished for it. “ORAL has come to stay, and it is important that we make it work because we promised Ghanaians. The likes of Ablakwa, COP Kofi Boakye, Martin Kpebu, Yao Domelevo, and Raymond Archer are distinguished personalities who I believe will do a great job,” he said. General Matheen also urged the committee not to engage in witch-hunting but rather focus on recovering stolen state resources. “I look at the members, and I don’t think they are men who will go after people just to show them where power lies. They are going to do a great job and ensure that corruption becomes a high-paying crime in the country,” he said. Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has expressed satisfaction with the growing support and enthusiasm among non-New Patriotic Party members for the program. He stressed that the initiative is not a partisan effort but a national cause to protect Ghana’s resources. “Great to see more NPP stalwarts support Mahama’s Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL).”Already in her third year at North Iowa Elementary School, working with a new class of fifth grade students on a popular Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) project, Winnebago County ISU Extension Youth Director Cassie Armstrong this year is partnering with Forest City fifth grade students for the first time. The partnership expansion to include Forest City students came after fifth grade science teacher Tammy Egesdal communicated with Armstrong about the positive impacts it could have for her students. “They’re each building their own boat,” Armstong said. “It’s called ‘Build a Boat.’ I help build the motor portion, base, and propeller and complete the circuit to make it run.” She said students’ boats are bigger than models, but must fit inside a tote, which she called the easiest way to get enough depth of water to keep the kids at the school for the entirety of the project. The students design and build most of the boat themselves. “They use recycled materials, those things they’d find in a recycling bin,” Armstrong said. “We don’t allow them to bring anything they’ve purchased unless it’s like a used pie tin.” Examples of recycling items students have used for their innovation include plastic milk containers, soda bottles, cookie and other to-go food containers, and Styrofoam egg cartons. “How long it takes depends on how quickly they pick up on what we’re doing and how well they understand what we’re trying to accomplish,” Armstrong said. The project started in September, boats will be assembled with recycled materials in January and the goal is to test them in March. An estimated 35 North Iowa and 85 Forest City fifth grade students have been progressing at the same pace, according to Armstrong, who extensively reviewed ISU Extension 4-H curriculum tied to this particular project before starting the partnership at North Iowa two years ago. “All of them have picked up on it really well,” continued Armstrong. “We probably could have finished sooner, but I stretched it out a little longer so we won’t be testing with freezing water in December when it’s cold outside. Armstrong said filing totes with water outside works much better than having to clean “lots” of water from the floors after testing inside the school. The two most important tests are whether boats float or take on water as well as if the motor starts and everything runs correctly. Armstrong noted that they talk about buoyancy and boat design considerations extensively before students start designing and building their own boats. She noted project goals include acquainting students with STEM, improving their fine motor skills through things like using a screwdriver, learning how to complete an electric circuit, and developing an understanding of what recycled materials are and ways they may be repurposed. “After they take them home, they can keep them the same, alter the design, or even take them apart and redo them if they want,” said Armstrong, who has been meeting with Forest City and North Iowa fifth graders for about 35 minutes once a month on the project this school year. Armstrong reviews curriculum and lesson plans beforehand and says she has also benefitted from all the positive interactions with students in both school districts. “There are a lot of ideas for programs through the schools in future years,” she continued. “I’m looking forward to building more partnerships. It’s a lot of fun working with the kids. I have a great time doing it. I hope we can work together again.” Rob Hillesland is community editor for the Summit-Tribune.
