After this election season, I’ve heard more than one person suggest that our country is nearly trashed. Well, I’m not usually one to talk trash, but I do have a trashy parable to tell. The trashy tale is told every holiday season when our Waste Disposal company changes our pickup day. Hysteria begins in our quiet lake neighborhood whenever we get the email informing us that our regular trash day will change to accommodate a holiday schedule. I call it The Holiday Garbage Debacle. It begins Black Friday weekend when folks are too busy buying junk on sale to think about disposing of their junk. But by New Year’s our cans will be filled with the carcasses of turkeys and old dollies. No one will remember exactly what that email said because we deleted the message. With so many forgetful people, we all follow that one cocky soul who is confident he remembers the temporary trash day. As he drags his cans curbside, doors creak for peeks, neighbors labor and phones buzz. More cans join the festive holiday parade. Joggers and mommies pushing strollers spread the fear via cell phones urging spouses to make the last-minute push. That’s when the dam breaks. Throngs of people dash outside in their robes praying it’s not too late. It’s that whole herd-to-the-curb mentality. I remember a few years ago, just after Thanksgiving Day, I woke up urging my wife to help me push the cans into the foggy dawn. “Our cans are stuffed! Hurry or we’ll miss the pickup,” I warned in my repent-or-burn voice. “I think we’re still on the regular schedule.” “Then why are so many people putting their trash out?” I asked. “One person did, so they all did,” she said, yelling her social commentary as I rattled the cans to the street. Determined to prove her wrong, I paused to listen for the monstrous garbage trucks. Other neighbors joined my acoustical surveillance team as they cocked their ears out second-story windows. People ran across the street consulting neighbors — pulling out more cans — doors were opening and slamming in search of that truck. Finally, when rumor found its saturation point, a hard-headed neighbor emerged brandishing the printed email she had dutifully posted on her refrigerator. As she circulated her epistle, converts found the truth and returned their cans to the hidden place where respectable neighborhood CC&R’s demand they be placed. Still some who were unwilling to demonstrate sinful shame kept their cans curbside all the while muttering, “They’ll be sorry when the truck comes!” I don’t mean to trivialize this political discord we find ourselves in, but lately I can’t help but wonder if the new cycle has erupted with stories that inspire new levels of hysteric hyperbole. These days, I’m trying to stick with facts as I know them because, just as in the case of the garbage can debacle, facts remain our best ally against fear. As a country, we are bigger than the fear-based concerns generated over which bathroom one uses, what library book is removed from a shelf and where one is allowed to pray. There are more solid things that need our focus, like immigration reform, a fair tax base, common-sense gun regulation, and issues too many to name here. These issues come with a slew of problems yet to be worked out. So, before we start acting on our fear, I have to remember the Biblical promise that “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” Trusting in this promise and keeping a sound mind gets my vote every time – no matter when the trash always gets picked up. — Reminder that my family and I will be matching all reader donations to Chispa Project up to $5,000 postmarked between now and GivingTuesday on December 3. (Bloomberg) -- Daniel Chapo, Mozambique’s incoming president, plans national-reconciliation talks to resolve an escalating political crisis that has resulted in the deaths of dozens of people and stalled growth in the gas-rich nation. The Constitutional Council on Monday proclaimed Chapo the winner of the Oct. 9 election with 65% of the vote, triggering renewed unrest in parts of the southeast African nation. The 47-year-old lawyer and former provincial governor expects to be inaugurated on Jan. 15. “I am launching a national-reconciliation and dialogue initiative,” Chapo said in an interview hours after the top electoral court confirmed his landslide win. “That will bring together political leaders, civil society and communities to address grievances, foster understanding and build trust.” The intensifying turmoil has curtailed mining operations and threatens to further delay a $20 billion natural gas export plan that TotalEnergies SE is leading. It has disrupted flights, with tourists deterred by rioting that’s now spread to the port cities of Beira and Nacala. “There is significant ongoing unrest across Mozambique following the October elections and the confirmation of the results,” the UK government said in an advisory to travelers. Standard Bank Group Ltd.’s local unit expects an economic contraction this quarter and next, which would add pressure to already-strained state finances. Local broadcasters showed mobs attacking at least three bank branches near the capital, Maputo, and torching the ruling party’s office in a town north of the city. Neighboring South Africa called on all parties in Mozambique to commit to an “urgent dialogue” and stands ready to facilitate talks, the government in Pretoria said in a statement. Protesters overnight set fire to the offices of the governing Mozambique Liberation Front, known as Frelimo, in the town of Macia, about 110 kilometers (68 miles) north of Maputo. Demonstrators blocked various roads with burning tires, while footage shared on social media showed buildings — including government institutions and a bank branch — in flames. More Fatalities Local observer group Decide Platform said 16 had died since Monday evening. It earlier counted at least 130 fatalities since the protests began in late October, with most caused by police firing on the crowds. The most obvious route to restoring peace would be negotiating a truce with the fiery opposition presidential candidate, who has orchestrated the protests via live stream since fleeing the country of almost 35 million on Oct. 21. Venâncio Mondlane, who the top electoral court said got 24% of the vote, called the elections fraudulent and on Tuesday said the demonstrations wouldn’t stop. He is open to international mediation, he said in his latest update. Sign up for the twice-weekly Next Africa newsletter for the latest business and economic news from the continent. Chapo is not yet in power and will only initiate talks with other political leaders including Mondlane after the inauguration, the president-elect said. He hasn’t considered including the opposition in a unity government and would have to consult his party first, he added. Frelimo has been in power since independence 49 years ago. Mondlane said in a previous interview he would consider forming a national unity government, but wouldn’t accept any position himself under Frelimo’s rule. Local and international election observers raised concerns over vote rigging, including signs of ballot-box stuffing. While the Constitutional Council acknowledged irregularities, it said they woould not have changed the outcome. The US State Department called the process “flawed.” “We don’t have any elections without irregularities in the world,” Chapo said when asked if the outcome called into question his legitimacy to govern. Frelimo denied it rigged the vote. Besides the unrest, Chapo will take over a government struggling to pay its bills. He plans on restoring peace as a priority to getting the economy back on track. He also committed to policy and legal stability for companies operating large projects in the country, including natural gas, telling investors: “Don’t worry about it.” “Mozambique remains a land of immense opportunity,” said Chapo. “It is very important to maintain the contract situation with these companies, our law.” More From Chapo Interview: You can follow Bloomberg’s reporting on Africa on WhatsApp. Sign up here. --With assistance from Borges Nhamire and Ntando Thukwana. Bleacher Report's NFL expert panel, which includes analysts Brad Gagnon, Gary Davenport, Brent Sobleski, and Maurice Moton, along with editors Wes O'Donnell, Ian Hanford, and Vince Michelino from B/R Betting Strategy, took a tough blow last week, falling short of the .500 mark on their consensus picks. DraftKings Line: Kansas City -2.5 The Kansas City Chiefs have covered the spread in consecutive weeks, and a victory on Wednesday or a Buffalo Bills loss on Sunday would give them home-field advantage in the AFC. If the Chiefs lock up the No. 1 seed, they may sit their starters in Week 18, an extra incentive to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers. Although Patrick Mahomes didn't show any lingering effects from his ankle injury in last week's game, he could use the rest. The same goes for Chris Jones, who exited that contest with a calf injury. The Chiefs will face a tough challenge in Pittsburgh, though. George Pickens (hamstring) has gone through full practices, indicating that he will return from a three-game absence. With him, the Steelers offense will get a much-needed boost after the unit scored just 30 points over the last two weeks. With Pickens and safety DeShon Elliott likely to play on Wednesday, Hanford took the Steelers to win outright. "Reinforcements should come for Pittsburgh on Christmas in the form of George Pickens and DeShon Elliott," Hanford said. "This game caps off a brutal three games in an 11-day stretch that has already featured losses to the Eagles and the Ravens, but I see this as a get-right opportunity for Mike Tomlin's squad. "The Chiefs do not boast the same kind of explosive offense that either Baltimore or Philadelphia currently have, and the Steelers have the pass rush to exploit Kansas City's shaky play at offensive tackle. "I expect Jaylen Warren's expanded role to continue and George Pickens to have a major impact in his (likely) return to the field. The Chiefs have walked a fine line all season long, but the Steelers get it done at home and win a tight one. Predictions Davenport: Chiefs Gagnon: Chiefs Hanford: Steelers Knox: Chiefs Michelino: Steelers Moton: Chiefs O'Donnell: Steelers Sobleski: Steelers ATS Consensus: None Score Prediction: Steelers 23, Chiefs 21 DK Line: Baltimore -5.5 Following a Week 13 bye, the Baltimore Ravens have outscored their opponents 69-31. They still have a chance to win the AFC North title. On the road, the Ravens will face an injury-riddled Houston Texans squad. Texans wide receiver Tank Dell will miss the remainder of the season with a dislocated kneecap and a torn ACL. Guard Shaq Mason is week-to-week with a knee injury. Already without wideout Stefon Diggs, Houston may be concerned about the pileup of injuries before its wild-card matchup. If that's the case, the Ravens could run away with this game, and they may play with more urgency if the Pittsburgh Steelers lose in the first Christmas Day contest. If Pittsburgh loses, Baltimore would control its destiny toward a division title. Hanford sided with Baltimore because he has no faith in Houston keeping pace with its key injuries on offense. "I just don't see Houston putting up the points necessary to beat Baltimore here. The Ravens average around seven points per game more than Houston on the season, and C.J. Stroud just lost another weapon after Tank Dell suffered a devastating injury last week. "The Ravens are fighting for the AFC North crown and are 5-2 against the spread as a road favorite this season. I see this as a repeat of last year's playoff matchup and don't think Houston is quite ready to score with the Ravens' prolific offense. Ravens win by a touchdown." Predictions Davenport: Texans Gagnon: Ravens Hanford: Ravens Knox: Ravens Michelino: Ravens Moton: Ravens O'Donnell: Texans Sobleski: Ravens ATS Consensus: Ravens -5.5 Score Prediction: Ravens 28, Texans 22 DK Line: Seattle -3 Although the Seattle Seahawks have lost consecutive games, they're still in the mix for the NFC West title. Seattle is getting three points against the team with the second-longest active losing streak. On the road, Seattle is 5-1 straight up and 4-1-1 ATS . Meanwhile, the Bears' interim staff has been outcoached since they fired Matt Eberflus. Gagnon couldn't make a case to back the home underdogs. He's sided with the Seahawks, who have traveled well this season. "It's pretty tough to get behind the Bears with only a few points in one's back pocket at this stage," Gagnon said. "They haven't won since mid-October, and they looked shot in Week 16 despite another decent showing from Caleb Williams. "The Seahawks have something to play for here, and the Seahawks haven't lost on the road since September. They should take care of business in this spot." Predictions Davenport: Bears Gagnon: Seahawks Hanford: Seahawks Knox: Seahawks Michelino: Seahawks Moton: Seahawks O'Donnell: Seahawks Sobleski: Bears ATS Consensus: Seahawks -3 Score Prediction: Seahawks 24, Bears 17 DK Line: Los Angeles -4.5 Last Thursday, the Los Angeles Chargers won a crucial contest with the Denver Broncos, and they're one win away from a playoff berth. As road favorites, the Chargers are 3-1 ATS , and their offense seems like it's back on track. Last week, Los Angeles scored more than 17 points for the first time in about a month. The Chargers opened up running back J.K. Dobbins' 21-day practice window, though he may be a long shot to play on Thursday. Regardless, Davenport sided with the Chargers, who have more at stake than the playoff-eliminated New England Patriots. "A pretty good argument can be made here for taking New England and the points at home—it's a sizable spread for a team traveling east for an early game on a Saturday," Davenport said. "The Pats also hung around for most of last week's game against the Bills before eventually losing by a field goal. "But the Bolts are coming off an impressive win over Denver. The Chargers are playing for something besides pride and screwing up their draft slot (Looking at you, Raiders. Looking. Right. At. You.). And while the Los Angeles run game remains a concern, a combination of Justin Herbert's right arm and a stout L.A. defense will propel the Chargers to a seven-point win and cover." Predictions Davenport: Chargers Gagnon: Patriots Hanford: Chargers Knox: Chargers Michelino: Patriots Moton: Chargers O'Donnell: Chargers Sobleski: Chargers ATS Consensus: Chargers -4.5 Score Prediction: Chargers 26, Patriots 20 DK Line: Cincinnati -3 The Cincinnati Bengals must win to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Bengals need their sixth-ranked scoring offense to produce at a high level in a tough matchup to cover the spread. Joe Burrow leads the NFL in passing yards (4,229) and touchdowns (39). His top receiver, Ja'Marr Chase, is the No. 1 pass-catcher in receptions (108), receiving yards (1,510) and touchdowns (16). On the other hand, the Bengals also need their 28th-ranked scoring defense to make crucial stops, which may be an issue for them. Davenport backed Denver to win outright because he thinks its fourth-ranked scoring defense will slow down Cincinnati's high-powered offense. "This spread indicates that Vegas sees these teams as fairly evenly matched, which is a bit surprising. The Bengals still have a faint chance of making the playoffs after their best defensive performance of the season against the Browns last week, but said performance says a lot more about how abjectly awful Dorian Thompson-Robinson is than any defensive improvement by Cincinnati. "Seriously, Cleveland. Just roll out Sal the Nacho Vendor at quarterback. It would be less embarrassing for the franchise. An M1 Abrams isn't that obvious a tank. "Denver gave up 34 last week in Los Angeles, but it still has a far superior defense—and the Broncos pass rush should have success against a suspect Cincinnati line. "Joe Cool and Ja'Marr Chase will get theirs, but Denver's offense isn't cat food. The Bengals aren't going to look so stout against a quarterback capable of forward passes. "Denver locks down a playoff spot while making the Bengals feel like that person who decides to try fruitcake and then spends 36 hours in the bathroom." Predictions Davenport: Broncos Gagnon: Bengals Hanford: Bengals Knox: Broncos Michelino: Broncos Moton: Bengals O'Donnell: Broncos Sobleski: Bengals ATS Consensus: None Score Prediction: Broncos 30, Bengals 27 DK Line: Los Angeles -5.5 Like last year, the Los Angeles Rams are on a hot streak in the latter half of the season. In 2023, the Rams lost one regular-season game after their Week 10 bye. They're on a four-game winning streak and have beaten five of their last six opponents. Meanwhile, the Arizona Cardinals have faded over the past several weeks. Following their Week 11 bye, they have lost four of five contests. Though overall, Cardinals two-time Pro Bowl quarterback Kyler Murray has disappointed as a passer this season, throwing for 16 touchdowns while averaging 219.2 passing yards in 15 games. As these teams trend in opposite directions, Knox expects the Rams to even their season series with the Cardinals. "I'm always leery of divisional games, and the Cardinals did win the first meeting convincingly. However, Los Angeles has become a markedly better—and healthier—team since then, while Arizona has declined," Knox said. "I think coaching and preparation will make the difference here. "The Rams keep showing up big for pivotal games, while the Cardinals have repeatedly appeared ill-prepared. With nothing left to play for, I just don't see Jonathan Gannon's squad putting up the fight we're likely to see out of the Rams this week." Predictions Davenport: Cardinals Gagnon: Rams Hanford: Rams Knox: Rams Michelino: Rams Moton: Rams O'Donnell: Rams Sobleski: Cardinals ATS Consensus: Rams -5.5 Score Prediction: Rams 31, Cardinals 24 DK Line: Buffalo -9.5 The Buffalo Bills' streak of dominance hit a speed bump last week, but they edged out the New England Patriots with a 24-21 victory. Some bettors who saw the Bills struggle with the Patriots at home will be hesitant to back them against the New York Jets, who have improved on the offensive side of the ball before a nine-point clunker last week. However, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport , Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers' status is uncertain due to a knee injury. Rodgers told reporters he's dealing with a "little" MCL injury and will play on Sunday. O'Donnell saw the Bills' letdown ATS coming last week, but he's back on them to cover on Sunday. "The Bills predictably had their slip-up this past week against New England, winning only by three against a 14-point spread. The Jets think they have been 'better' of late, thanks to Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams reminiscing enough to put up some statistics. "In reality, they're still a mess, only capable of a couple of fantasy football-managers-care type plays. This matchup historically plays a bit tighter than a two-score game, but I'll roll my dice with Josh Allen and the Bills imposing their will after the previous week's lackluster performance." Predictions Davenport: Bills Gagnon: Bills Hanford: Jets Knox: Jets Michelino: Bills Moton: Bills O'Donnell: Bills Sobleski: Jets ATS Consensus: Bills -9.5 Score Prediction: Bills 31, Jets 21 DK Line: Indianapolis -8 The Indianapolis Colts have lost a lot of trust among our panel in recent weeks. They're 1-3 ATS in their previous four outings and nearly lost the cover to a rallying Tennessee Titans team that scored 23 unanswered points last week. Yet the Colts will play the New York Giants, who are 4-11 ATS this season. At home, they're 2-6 ATS . O'Donnell knows that the Colts' blunders could allow the Giants to tighten the score, but he believes they match up well against Big Blue's biggest weakness. "There's no reasonable number of points to be spotted that will make me feel comfortable taking the Giants. The Colts are the type of team to do something stupid enough to make this closer than it should be, but hopefully, they can lean on Jonathan Taylor and Anthony Richardson and attempt as few passes as possible. "Running wild on the league's second-worst rushing defense seems like something Indy should be more than capable of doing while thwarting whatever Big Blue thinks is an offensive game plan these days. Two weeks in a row of conservative vs. inept—and I'll stick with conservative." Predictions Davenport: Giants Gagnon: Giants Hanford: Colts Knox: Giants Michelino: Colts Moton: Colts O'Donnell: Colts Sobleski: Giants ATS Consensus: None Score Prediction: Colts 24, Giants 15 DK Line: Tampa Bay -8 The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost control of their pathway to the playoffs in a loss to the Dallas Cowboys, but they can regain the top spot in the NFC South with a win and an Atlanta Falcons loss to the Washington Commanders. Though the Buccaneers field the fifth-ranked scoring offense, they're way too careless with the football, committing 10 turnovers in their last five games. Fittingly, they fumbled away the game against the Cowboys. The Buccaneers will likely play a cleaner game after a crucial loss, and the Panthers are tied for 20th in takeaways. Remember, though, these teams battled into overtime in Week 13. Tampa Bay barely beat Carolina 26-23. Sobleski noted the Panthers' recent strides despite their poor record. He expects Carolina to make Tampa Bay sweat it out through four quarters. "Credit needs to go where it's due, and the Panthers have been playing relatively well," Sobleski said with applause. "Carolina has remained mostly competitive since the team's Week 11 bye. Don't let the 1-4 record during that stretch fool you. "The upcoming contest against the Buccaneers has an eight-point spread, while the Panthers' average margin of loss since their bye week is seven, which is skewed by a 16-point defeat at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys. "Bryce Young and Co. are starting to figure it out, and this contest should be close." Predictions Davenport: Panthers Gagnon: Panthers Hanford: Panthers Knox: Panthers Michelino: Panthers Moton: Buccaneers O'Donnell: Buccaneers Sobleski: Panthers ATS Consensus: Panthers +8 Score Prediction: Buccaneers 31, Panthers 26 DK Line: Minnesota -2 A couple of days ago, the Green Bay Packers shut out the New Orleans Saints 34-0. Now, they'll focus on a critical road matchup with the Minnesota Vikings. In the first meeting between these teams, Green Bay fell behind 28-0 by the second quarter. The Packers made a run to close the deficit, but they lost 31-29 at home. The Packers are a different team now, though. After throwing an interception in his first eight games of the season, Love hasn't turned the ball over since Week 11. Green Bay is also leaning on running back Josh Jacobs who's scored 10 touchdowns over the last six weeks. The Minnesota Vikings' second-ranked run defense will challenge the Packers' surging ground game. The Vikings have also won eight in a row. Michelino focused on Green Bay's passing game. He thinks Love will have a much better performance than his first one against the Vikings and lead his team to victory. "It was all fireworks the last time these two met when Minnesota won at Lambeau Field after nearly blowing a 28-0 lead," Michelino recalled. "The Vikings held on to win 31-29 in a shootout, but Jordan Love made things very interesting in the second half after shaking off the rust in his return. "It turned out to be a sign of things to come as both teams are now destined for the playoffs. It's easy to fall in love with the Vikings when Darnold is playing like a bonafide MVP candidate, and Justin Jefferson continues to showcase why he's the best receiver in the league. "But when the calendar flips to December, in the midst of Toyotathon , Jordan Love elevates his game like no other. The Vikings deserve to be favored at home as the better all-around team, but the Packers are rolling, and they've played great on the road this year. I love getting the points here, I'll take them and run. Predictions Davenport: Vikings Gagnon: Packers Hanford: Vikings Knox: Vikings Michelino: Packers Moton: Packers O'Donnell: Packers Sobleski: Packers ATS Consensus: Packers +2 Score Prediction: Packers 28, Vikings 26 DK Line: New Orleans -1.5 The New Orleans Saints couldn't get anything going against the Green Bay Packers last Monday. They went scoreless, with backup quarterback Spencer Rattler filling in for an injured Derek Carr. Saints running back Alvin Kamara missed that game with a groin injury. The team opened up wideout Chris Olave's 21-day practice window, which gives him a chance to return soon. With all the Saints' injuries on the offensive side of the ball, Moton likes the Raiders to win back-to-back games. "Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce made it clear that he doesn't care about a 2025 draft pick," Moton said. "And even though he leads a flawed team (check the record), his players still exert maximum effort on the field. "While we can debate which team is worse, the Raiders' key offensive playmakers are healthy. Budding star tight end Brock Bowers and wide receiver Jakobi Meyers will be the difference in this game. "The Silver and Black win consecutive contests, knocking off an injury-riddled Saints squad that will struggle to score points twice this week." Predictions Davenport: Raiders Gagnon: Saints Hanford: Raiders Knox: Raiders Michelino: Raiders Moton: Raiders O'Donnell: Raiders Sobleski: Raiders ATS Consensus: Raiders +1.5 Score Prediction: Raiders 20, Saints 13 DK Line: Jacksonville -1 As one would expect, three-win division rivals have a pick 'em line. In Week 14, the Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Tennessee Titans 10-6 in an uneventful game. This contest won't spur much offensive excitement, but the near-even line will make bettors sweat. Moton believes the Titans' quarterback switch from Will Levis to Mason Rudolph gives them the edge in another low-scoring contest. "Will Levis isn't a franchise quarterback, but he's good enough to move the ball against one of the league's worst pass defenses," Moton said. "Over the last two weeks, Rudolph has thrown for 461 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. Of course, he will likely turn the ball over one or two times, but the Titans should be able to generate enough offensive production to overcome their mistakes. They have scored 57 points in their last two outings. "Tennessee will avenge its Week 14 loss to the Jacksonville." Predictions Davenport: Jaguars Gagnon: Jaguars Hanford: Titans Knox: Titans Michelino: Titans Moton: Titans O'Donnell: Titans Sobleski: Titans ATS Consensus: Titans +1 Score Prediction: Titans 21, Jaguars 19 DK Line: Miami -6.5 The Miami Dolphins are clinging to faint playoff hopes that could go up in smoke if the Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos win their games on Saturday. For now, they have extra motivation to play their best ball in hopes of creeping through the backdoor of the playoffs. Without wideout Jaylen Waddle (knee) last week, the Dolphins beat an injury-riddled San Francisco 49ers squad 29-17. As Sobleski noted, the Dolphins won't have to deal with cold weather, so he expects them to knock off the Cleveland Browns with their third-string quarterback. "Typically, the weather report isn't a big discussion point in these comments. However, the Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa isn't a cold-weather quarterback. It's a good thing the team's late December trip to Cleveland will be unseasonably warm. Current weather projections have the temperature rising to the mid-50s. "Aside from that factor, Cleveland can't muster any offense with its current setup, led by second-year quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Whereas the Dolphins can definitely score points, with 29 or more in four of the last six contests." Predictions Davenport: Dolphins Gagnon: Dolphins Hanford: Browns Knox: Dolphins Michelino: Dolphins Moton: Dolphins O'Donnell: Dolphins Sobleski: Dolphins ATS Consensus: Dolphins -6.5 Score Prediction: Dolphins 26, Browns 16 DK Line: Philadelphia -9.5 Despite the uncertainty around quarterback Jalen Hurts, oddsmakers gave the Philadelphia Eagles a massive edge with this line. Nonetheless, the Eagles were on a hot streak, winning 10 consecutive games before a disheartening loss to the Washington Commanders last week. Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys haven't checked out of a losing season. Even after a Commanders win eliminated them from playoff contention, the Cowboys upset the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to win their fourth game in five weeks, with backup quarterback Cooper Rush filling in for an injured Dak Prescott. Bettors should wait for news on Hurts to take a strong stance on this matchup, but Michelino will side with Dallas regardless of the Eagles' quarterback situation. "What a difference a week makes! Despite contrasting records and playoff outlook, it almost feels like the momentum has completely reversed for the Cowboys and Eagles heading into this matchup. It's been a lost season for Dallas, but that doesn't mean there isn't still plenty to play for in terms of pride and effort. "It would've been easy to roll over after losing Dak for the season, but Mike McCarthy still has this team playing hard, scheming up creative ways to win (and keeping Jerry Jones happy in the process). "The short-term outlook for Philly is a little more blurred, as we still don't know if Jalen Hurts (concussion) will be cleared to play for Week 17. The Kenny Pickett experience dampers both the outlook for the Eagles' prospects and Saquon's chance to break the rushing record. "With the Cowboys playing spirited football and Micah Parsons' ability to wreck a game, it's hard to pass up taking that many points in this division matchup, even with Hurts under center. I think they give Jerry another reason to smile this week." Predictions Davenport: Cowboys Gagnon: Eagles Hanford: Cowboys Knox: Cowboys Michelino: Cowboys Moton: Cowboys O'Donnell: Eagles Sobleski: Cowboys ATS Consensus: Cowboys +9.5 Score Prediction: Eagles 24, Cowboys 20 DK Line: Washington -5 In a matchup between teams with rookie quarterbacks and playoff implications, the Washington Commanders will host the Atlanta Falcons for Sunday Night Football . With a win, the Commanders can clinch a playoff berth, while the Falcons need a victory to stay ahead of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the top spot in the NFC South. Jayden Daniels' electric play has re-energized Washington's franchise. He's helped change the outcome of two contests on game-winning plays, throwing a last-second Hail Mary touchdown pass to beat the Chicago Bears in Week 8 and a late touchdown pass to Jamison Crowder last week. In the short term, Michael Penix Jr. has brought new life to the Falcons' aerial attack. In his debut last week, he threw for 202 yards and an interception, though tight end Kyle Pitts deserves the blame for bobbling a pass that led to the turnover. Penix looked poised in his first career start though. Atlanta injected him into the starting lineup amid a playoff push, and he doesn't look rattled under center. Knox took extra time to think about his lean for this game, and he trusts Commanders head coach Dan Quinn more than a rookie quarterback in his second start. "This is a far tougher call than it would have been with Kirk Cousins behind center for Atlanta. The Falcons again control their own destiny in the NFC South, and they are a more threatening team offensively with Penix at quarterback. However, I expect Dan Quinn to have a plan to throw off the rookie while getting another strong performance from his own first-year signal-caller. "Jayden Daniels and the Commanders just cut through an Eagles defense that is far more consistent than Atlanta's. The Eagles may still have lost that game if Jalen Hurts had stayed on the field for Philly, but the confidence the Commanders gained from the win can propel them to a very strong finish." Predictions Davenport: Commanders Gagnon: Falcons Hanford: Commanders Knox: Commanders Michelino: Commanders Moton: Falcons O'Donnell: Commanders Sobleski: Falcons ATS Consensus: Commanders -5 Score Prediction: Commanders 28, Falcons 21 DK Line: Detroit -4 Entering Week 16, the Detroit Lions seemed like a team that could lose its edge on the Philadelphia Eagles for the NFC's No. 1 seed. Following a loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Lions found out that running back David Montgomery suffered a knee injury that will sideline him indefinitely. Yet the Lions doubled up on the Chicago Bears in a 34-17 win. The Eagles lost to the Washington Commanders, so Detroit has sole possession of the NFC's No. 1 spot again. On Monday, the Lions will face the San Francisco 49ers in a rematch of the 2023 NFC Championship Game. Entering Week 16, these teams were among the clubs with the most players on injured reserve , but the Lions still have enough offensive firepower to score 30-plus points. The 49ers have scored 23 points over the last two weeks. Gagnon believes the 49ers, with all of their injuries, have run out of gas at this point of the season. He sees another decisive win for the Lions on Monday night. "Detroit made a statement last week, while the 49ers look like they have nothing left. Five of their last six losses have come by at least six points, while the Lions already have seven double-digit-point victories this season. They'll likely make that eight on Monday night." New recharge plan: BSNL launches new 425 day plan; Jio-Airtel and Vi’s problems increaseColorado would not disclose the amount of insurance coverage each received, citing privacy laws. Coach Deion Sanders and athletic director Rick George both said it was the largest in college football history. "We happen to have two players that are probably going to be the first two picks of the NFL draft," Sanders said Monday. "We all know who those two are and they have received, I think, the highest number of coverage that has ever been covered in college football. It far exceeds anyone that has ever played this game of college football." While college programs maintain insurance policies for their athletes in case of injury, Colorado increased disability coverage for its entire roster in the Alamo Bowl. Sanders, the coach of the No. 20 Buffaloes, ensured his QB son and two-way star Hunter received larger policies since both are expected to be among the top 10 selections in the upcoming NFL draft. "It was his idea we should get disability insurance for our athletes for this game to ensure that they played and if there was some kind of injury that they would be well taken care of," George said. "So, we worked together on that. We're excited about it. We think it's great that all our players are playing in the game. That's what all bowl games should be like." Colorado (9-3, No. 23 CFP) will face the 17th-ranked BYU Cougars (10-2, No. 17 CFP) in the Alamo Bowl on Saturday. While most teams are scrambling with starters opting out of bowl games this year to enter the transfer portal or NFL draft, the Buffaloes did not lose any player on their two-deep roster. "It's more than what I got (when he played at Kansas State)," Colorado linebackers coach Andre' Hart said. "They gave us a helmet and said pop this on your leg and get out there and play. For them to get that (increased insurance coverage), I just think it's beneficial. To talk about where the game is, where it's going and how leadership is taking care of the players, I thought that's excellent." Shedeur Sanders completed 337 of 454 passes for 3,926 yards and 35 touchdowns this season. Many scouting services have Sanders rated as the top quarterback in this year's draft. Hunter received the Heisman Trophy as a two-way standout at cornerback and wide receiver. He had 92 receptions for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns and as a cornerback had four interceptions, broke up 11 passes and limited the opposition to 22 receptions on 688 defensive snaps. "They've taken care of us, everybody," Colorado running back Micah Welch said. "It really means a lot to have every teammate up here. That's a big thing. What I like about Coach Prime, they're taking care of us."Jimmy Carter, the 39th US president, has died at 100 ATLANTA (AP) — Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has died. He was 100 years old and had spent more than a year in hospice care. The Georgia peanut farmer served one turbulent term in the White House before building a reputation as a global humanitarian and champion of democracy. He defeated President Gerald Ford in 1976 promising to restore trust in government but lost to Ronald Reagan four years later amid soaring inflation, gas station lines and the Iran hostage crisis. He and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, then formed The Carter Center, and he earned a Nobel Peace Prize while making himself the most active and internationally engaged of former presidents. The Carter Center said the former president died Sunday afternoon in Plains, Georgia. Jetliner skids off runway and bursts into flames while landing in South Korea, killing 179 SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A jetliner skidded off a runway, slammed into a concrete fence and burst into flames in South Korea after its landing gear apparently failed to deploy. Officials said all but two of the 181 people on board were killed Sunday in one of the country’s worst aviation disasters. The 737-800 operated by Jeju Air plane arrived from Bangkok and crashed while attempting to land in the town of Muan, about 290 kilometers (180 miles) south of Seoul. Footage of the crash aired by South Korean television channels showed the plane skidding across the airstrip at high speed, evidently with its landing gear still closed. Tornadoes in Texas and Mississippi kill 2 and injure 6 as severe weather system moves east HOUSTON (AP) — A strong storm system is threatening to whip up tornadoes in parts of the U.S. Southeast, a day after severe weather claimed at least two lives as twisters touched down in Texas and Mississippi. Strong storms moving eastward Sunday are expected to continue producing gusty, damaging winds, hail and tornadoes through Sunday. That is according to National Weather Service meteorologist Frank Pereira. So far, the line of severe weather has led to about 40 tornado reports from southeastern Texas to Alabama, Pereira said, but those reports remain unconfirmed until surveys of damage are completed. Israeli hospital says Netanyahu has undergone successful prostate surgery TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — An Israeli hospital says Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has undergone successful prostate surgery. Jerusalem’s Hadassah Medical Center said his prostate was removed late Sunday and that he was recovering. Netanyahu’s office had said Justice Minister Yariv Levin, a close ally, would serve as acting prime minister during the procedure. Doctors ordered the operation after detecting an infection last week. Netanyahu is expected to remain hospitalized for several days. With so much at stake, Netanyahu’s health in wartime is a concern for both Israelis and the wider world. Syria's de facto leader says it could take up to 4 years to hold elections BEIRUT (AP) — Syria’s de facto leader has said it could take up to four years to hold elections in Syria, and that he plans on dissolving his Islamist group that led the country’s insurgency at an anticipated national dialogue summit for the country. Ahmad al-Sharaa, who leads Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the group leading the new authority in Syria, made the remarks in an interview Sunday. That's according to the Saudi television network Al-Arabiyya. It comes almost a month after a lightning insurgency led by HTS overthrew President Bashar Assad’s decades-long rule, ending the country’s uprising-turned civil war that started back in 2011. A fourth infant dies of the winter cold in Gaza as families share blankets in seaside tents DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — A fourth infant has died of hypothermia in Gaza, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced by nearly 15 months of war are huddled in tents along the rainy, windswept coast as winter arrives. The baby's father says the 20-day-old child was found with his head as “cold as ice” Sunday morning in their tent. The baby’s twin brother was moved to the intensive care unit of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. Their father says the twins were born one month premature and spent just a day in hospital, which like other Gaza health centers has been overwhelmed and only partially functions. Musk causes uproar for backing Germany's far-right party ahead of key elections BERLIN (AP) — Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has caused uproar after backing Germany’s far-right party in a major newspaper ahead of key parliamentary elections in the Western European country, leading to the resignation of the paper’s opinion editor in protest. Germany is to vote in an early election on Feb. 23 after Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-party governing coalition collapsed last month in a dispute over how to revitalize the country’s stagnant economy. Musk’s guest opinion piece for Welt am Sonntag, published in German over the weekend, was the second time this month he supported the Alternative for Germany, or AfD. 2024 was a year of triumphs and setbacks for Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Here's how it unfolded The year 2024 saw President Vladimir Putin further cement his power as he sought to counter Russia's isolation over the war in Ukraine. He won a fifth term that will keep him in office until 2030 following an election with only token opposition. He tightened a political crackdown on Russian society, and his top opponent, Alexei Navalny, died in prison under still unknown circumstances. But gunmen massacred scores of people in a Moscow concert hall, and a bomb killed a top general in attacks that underscored security flaws. Ukrainian forces swept into the Russian region of Kursk, Putin boasted about a lethal new hypersonic missile, and a new Trump administration raised concerns about continued U.S. support for Ukraine. LeBron James at 40: A milestone birthday arrives Monday for the NBA's all-time scoring leader When LeBron James broke another NBA record earlier this month, the one for most regular-season minutes played in a career, his Los Angeles Lakers teammates handled the moment in typical locker room fashion. They made fun of him. Dubbed The Kid from Akron, with a limitless future, James is now the 40-year-old from Los Angeles with wisps of gray in his beard, his milestone birthday coming Monday, one that will make him the first player in NBA history to play in his teens, 20s, 30s and 40s. He has stood and excelled in the spotlight his entire career.

Uber Technologies Inc UBER has turned profits as of late, helped in part by its “Uber One” subscription. However, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is reportedly investigating the company over an alleged breach of consumer protection laws. What Happened: The FTC opened the investigation earlier this year, according to Bloomberg, citing documents it obtained. The investigation focuses on customer complaints about being enrolled in the Uber One subscription without their consent. Customers have also raised concerns that canceling the subscription is unnecessarily difficult. Uber One is a $9.99 monthly subscription that provides discounts on rides and Uber Eats. The regulatory agency has previously pursued cases against Amazon.com Inc , Adobe Inc and others for similar cancelation practices. The FTC sent a complaint to Uber shortly following Donald Trump ‘s election win on Nov. 5 seeking a monetary settlement, Bloomberg reports. Uber rejected the FTC’s offer, alleging the agency attempted to fast-track a resolution before Trump took office. In the waning days of the Biden Administration , the FTC has accelerated several of its investigations. Why it Matters: The company announced in October that Uber One had over 25 million subscribers. It has also recently expanded to India, according to the Times of India. The ongoing FTC probe is not the first time Uber has caught the attention of regulators. Uber and the FTC settled a lawsuit in 2018 over allegations that the San Francisco, California-based company exaggerated driver compensation in advertising. As part of the settlement, Uber refunded an average $222.96 to affected drivers. In September, Forbes columnist Len Sherman called for regulators to investigate the company for anti-competitive behavior. When Jimmy Carter set out to forge a legacy in his post-White House years, he not only created the Carter Center, but also wrote stacks of books documenting his political and personal history. He was not the most prolific U.S. president (Theodore Roosevelt authored about three dozen works), but Carter and his word processor galloped through a multitude of genres before his death at age 100 on Sunday. His 32 books include personal histories, political memoirs, a novel, poems, spiritual lessons, guides to aging, Middle East critiques, lectures and a children’s book. Some became best sellers, all are valuable to historians. Many, especially those about his Georgia experiences, are rewarding reads. Even so, Carter’s writing can be exasperating. The trained engineer was not prone to the creative phrase or an engaging narrative voice. In “Sources of Strength” (1997) he notes that while his evangelist sister Ruth Carter Stapleton prayed as though she was talking with a friend, “my prayers are usually more formal, as I speak somewhat cautiously to Almighty God.” Jimmy Carter wrote like he prayed. Even in his personal memoirs, readers are often kept at a distance, as if an inner Secret Service agent were standing guard over his deepest self. New York Times critic Michiko Kakutani found that in “Always a Reckoning” (1995), Carter’s poems “plod earnestly from Point A to Point B without ever making the leap into emotional hyperspace.” Washington Post reviewer Jonathan Yardley declared Carter’s “White House Diary” (2010) to be “stupendously dull.” Many of his books repeat themselves or read like over-extended opinion pieces. There are hints that Carter didn’t appreciate being edited. Peter Osnos, who says he worked closely with Carter on “Living Faith” (1996), read the first draft and made suggestions that led to “several very stiff exchanges.” When Carter co-authored “Everything to Gain” (1987) with wife Rosalynn, he wrote only half-jokingly that the process threatened “the stability of our marriage.” It’s possible this disinclination to editorial input cost him in his peacemaking pursuits. “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid” (2006) created a national and local furor. Some members of the Carter Center advisory board resigned and Jewish organizations bought ads to sharply protest Carter’s stance. In “We Can Have Peace in the Holy Land” (2009), Carter blames much of the outrage on his use of “apartheid” in the title. Questions arise: Did no editor or colleague raise a red flag over the word? Would Carter have heeded their reservations? The irony is that Carter’s books are valuable precisely because they are his own work and bespeak the earnestness Kakutani laments in his poetry. In “Sources of Strength,” perhaps the key piece in the jigsaw puzzle of his personality, Carter writes that “the most important goal most people share...is...to live in a truly meaningful way.” His written words also reveal the virtues, tics, talents and contradictions of the man. “White House Diary” attacks the late Sen. Ted Kennedy — with what seems disproportionate venom — for, among other things, condemning Carter’s health care plan. Yet in the earlier “Living Faith” (1996), the former president preaches forgiveness, then laments his own hypocrisy: “Most of my lingering resentments relate to our time in Washington. In some cases, I have said, ‘I can’t forgive that jerk!’” Carter’s books, at bottom, are about struggle: to overcome his personal faults, to bring meaning to his life and legacy, to battle injustice, to free the hostages in Iran, to come to terms with losing the presidency, to negotiate peace, to harness slippery language. The last struggle may have been the most challenging. William Zinsser, in his guide “On Writing Well,” cited President Carter for signing an executive order directing that federal regulations be written “simply and clearly.” But as Carter mused in a post-White House poem: “Now when I seek efficient words / to say what I believe is true / or have a dream I want to share / the vagueness is still there.” Language in federal regulations was one thing; language in literature proved to be another. RECOMMENDED READING An Hour Before Daylight: Memories of a Rural Boyhood (2001): The best seller traces Carter’s boyhood during the Depression in Georgia, is honest about Southern race issues and provides background on formation of his values. Turning Point: A Candidate, a State, and a Nation Come of Age (1992): The story of Carter’s 1962 campaign for the Georgia Senate draws a shocking portrait of local politics. Oddly, Carter never wrote a book on his term as governor. Living Faith (1996), Sources of Strength (1997): The closest we get to the inner man, Carter explains in the first book how his creed developed through life. The second contains 52 Sunday school lessons that provide eye-opening glimpses of a remarkable psyche. Beyond the White House: Waging Peace, Fighting Disease, Building Hope (2007): Describes the amazing scope of the Carter Center’s work, from negotiations in Haiti to eradicating Guinea worm in Ghana. The Hornet’s Nest: A Novel of the Revolutionary War (2003): This is flawed fiction about Deep South patriots in the Revolutionary War, but it deserves better than one snooty review headline: “Founding Bubbas.” As The Texas Observer noted, it is also “a studious reminder not to take the South for granted.”WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Summer Lee overcame a primary challenge to return to office in January. Two of her close allies did not. While Lee of Swissvale easily dispatched Edgewood Council member Bhavini Patel last spring, challengers ousted two other members of the left-wing group of House Democrats known as the Squad. What Lee and the two Democrats who lost their reelection bids — U.S. Reps. Jamaal Bowman of New York and Cori Bush of Missouri — had in common was that they have been among Israel's fiercest critics in Congress, even before Hamas launched an attack on the Jewish State on Oct. 7, 2023. "While the number of anti-Israel Democrats and their influence have been exaggerated, there's no doubt that the defeat of two of them should send a strong message to those who refuse to condemn the Iranian attack on Israel in April or voted against a resolution standing with Israel against Hamas or more recently has called on the administration to withhold weapons," said Halie Soifer, CEO of the Jewish Democratic Council of America. But while Bowman's and Bush's races attracted millions of dollars from the pro-Israel community, Lee's did not. Her district is more liberal than others — Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris received more votes in 2024 against Donald Trump than Joe Biden did in 2020 — and Nachama Soloveichik, a partner in ColdSpark, a Pittsburgh-based Republican consulting firm, said there wasn't the outrage over Lee's positions as there was in those other two districts. "I don't think she has suffered from the same kind of negatives," Soloveichik said. Lee did not respond to requests for comment. But a close ally, U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., said the millions of dollars spent by outside groups influenced the outcome of the races. "It's really heartbreaking to have members depart from here, especially in races that had the highest levels of special interest spending that we've seen in American history," Ocasio-Cortez said. "I don't think anyone feels good about that." A super PAC affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the powerful pro-Israel lobby, spent $14.6 million on the Bowman race and $8.6 million on the Bush race, according to the research group OpenSecrets. Those were the PAC's two highest-spending races in 2024, and AIPAC-backed candidates won both, as they did in 96% of Democrats the group endorsed. AIPAC spokesman Marshall Wittman said the results showed that "being pro-Israel is both good policy and good politics." Congressional Progressive Caucus leaders recommended that the Democratic National Committee ban super PACs from spending money in party primaries. Outgoing caucus chair Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., said that the outside money was a big factor in Bowman's and Bush's defeats. "Those two individuals had a lot of big money come in against them," Jayapal said. "Every election you have to convince voters. It gets very difficult, when you get enormous amounts of money coming in, to make your case. I don't think there's any big lesson to learn from it other than big money." After all, she said, many other progressives were reelected despite the outside spending. "I think people want to look at those two instead of looking at the whole range of progressives that won, including ones that had a lot of big money against them," she said. "But we obviously think we need to get big money out of these primaries." Another caucus member, U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., cautioned against calling the primary losses a backlash to progressive politicians. "There are unique factors to each of those districts, which I think we ought to refrain from making general statements," McGovern said. "Those districts are different, and there were a bunch of factors. I don't think it was a repudiation of the Squad or people wanted to move to the right. These are individual races." Still, Democratic strategist Joel Rubin, a Squirrel Hill native, said Lee should study why so much money was spent in those other races and why it worked. "It would benefit her and her political position to look at the lessons from the Bowman and the Bush races and rather than chalk it up to one generalized talking point, look deeper at why the money that went into the race had the impact on voters that it did," said Rubin. But Soloveichik cautioned that politicians aren't very good at personal introspection. "If Oct. 7, which was the worst attack on the Jewish people since the Holocaust, did not cause people to question their votes and their rhetoric, I don't think anything will," Soloveichik said. "They talk to people who think and vote just like them. Their supporters are hard-left activists, and their districts are overwhelmingly liberal. I doubt that we'll see anything." Lee's district includes the large Jewish community in Squirrel Hill, site of the worst antisemitic attack in U.S. history when Robert Bowers gunned down 11 worshippers in a local synagogue in 2018. She obtained $1 million in federal funds to convert the Squirrel Hill synagogue into a memorial and education center, and another $547,000 for the 10.27 Healing Partnership, which helps those traumatized by the shooting. Soifer said the congresswoman needs to build a better relationship with her Jewish constituents. "One doesn't always have to agree, but one should always have open lines of communication with one's constituents," Soifer said. And Soloveichik warned that Lee's electoral success in 2024 didn't close the door on a future, more successful challenger if she continues on her current path regarding the Jewish state. "I feel pretty confident that the people who care about Israel are keeping an eye on her performance and if there is an opportunity to fire her electorally, they will jump on it," she said. One of those watching Lee is Pittsburgh resident Lou Weiss, a local pro-Israel activist and member of the Republican Jewish Coalition. "If the appropriate candidate pops up, we'd love to happen to her what happened to these others," he said. "Hopefully she joins her buddies Jamaal and Cori in early retirement." In the wake of the primary defeats of her Squad colleagues, Lee disregards her Jewish constituents at her own risk, Rubin said. "What kind of relationship does she want to have with these constituents and will that influence her positions?" Rubin said. "If it doesn't and if the way she's engaging continues to make them concerned and upset, then you bet they're going to be looking for alternatives. ...If you keep on having your voters and constituents upset, you increase the likelihood of a credible challenger appearing." So far, Lee hasn't changed her positions on Israel. She was one of 14 House members to vote against a Republican-led resolution condemning antisemitism and one of nine opposing a resolution expressing support for Israel and condemning Hamas for the October 2023 attack. Earlier this month, Lee helped lead a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, urging them to suspend transfers of offensive weapons to Israel. "Continuing to transfer offensive weapons to Netanyahu's government prolongs the suffering of Palestinian families, puts Israeli lives in further danger, and risks our own national security by sending a message to the world that the U.S. applies its laws and values selectively," Lee said. Among the 19 other lawmakers signing the letter were Bowman and Bush. But Lee acts at her own peril if she doesn't acknowledge that Bowman's and Bush's positions on Israel were factors in their defeats, said Sam Markstein, national political director for the Republican Jewish Coalition. "As a proud Squad member, Congresswoman Lee has embraced, time and again, the most radical elements in the Democratic Party," Markstein said. "Congresswoman Lee would be wise to change course, but we know she won't." (c)2024 the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Visit the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette at www.post-gazette.com . Writer in chief: Jimmy Carter penned 32 booksISLAMABAD: In response to statements on recent verdicts by military courts, the Foreign Office on Tuesday reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to fulfilling all its international human rights obligations, saying the verdicts had been made under a law enacted by the Parliament of Pakistan. “Pakistan’s legal system is consistent with international human rights law including provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR),” the FO Spokesperson said in a statement on Tuesday. The spokesperson added that the country’s legal system had remedies of judicial review by the superior courts and guaranteed the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms. The statement added that Pakistan believed in constructive and productive dialogue to promote principles of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. “We remain fully committed to implementing our commitments under the GSP Plus Scheme and core international human rights conventions,” the spokesperson said, adding “We will continue to engage with our international partners including the European Union to uphold the international human rights law, without any discrimination and double standards”. EU, UK and US concerns over sentencing of 25 by military courts The FO statement comes day after the European Union, the UK and the United States raised concerns over the recent sentencing of 25 civilians by military courts for their involvement in the nationwide May 9 riots last year. The series of concerns come after a military court last week sentenced 25 PTI activists to imprisonment ranging from two to 10 years for their involvement in the May 9, 2023 riots, which broke out following the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan. While the PTI “rejected” the sentences, lawyers had also questioned the proceedings and the “disproportionately high conviction rate”. In a post on X today, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said: “The United States is concerned by the sentencing of Pakistani civilians in a military tribunal and calls upon Pakistani authorities to respect the right to a fair trial and due process.” His post echoed a State Department statement released yesterday, which expressed “deep concern” over the military court verdicts. The statement came just hours after the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) had echoed the same reservations. “While the UK respects Pakistan’s sovereignty over its own legal proceedings, trying civilians in military courts lacks transparency, independent scrutiny and undermines the right to a fair trial. We call on the Government of Pakistan to uphold its obligations under the [ICCPR],” the FCDO statement said. A day after the sentences were announced, an EU spokesperson had also described the verdicts as “being inconsistent with the obligations that Pakistan has undertaken under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)”. The EU spokesperson recalled that under the EU’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+), beneficiary countries, including Pakistan, have voluntarily agreed to implement effectively 27 international core conventions, including the ICCPR, in order to continue benefitting from GSP+ status.
